Abstract:In industrial zinc electrowinning, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has sluggish kinetics leading to ultrahigh overpotential and energy consumption. Herein, a sandwich-like MnCo2O4 modifying PbO2 composite electrode was fabricated via chemical-bath-deposition and electrodeposition. Consequently, the synthesized PbO2 electrode exhibits low Tafel slope of 0.17 V per decade and an operating potential of 1.68 V vs. SCE for 500 A m−2 in a simulated solution containing 150 g L−1 H2SO4 and 50 g L−1 Zn2+. Compared with traditional Pb-0.76Ag alloy, the overpotential at 500 A m−2 decreased by 357 mV, which ascribe to the incorporation of MnCo2O4 minoring crystal grain size and charge transfer resistance and enlarging active surface area. Furthermore, the composite electrode shows robust durability as long as 95 h at 15,000 A m−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte. Hence, this study offers a facile synthesis route to prepare composite electrodes for zinc electrowinning and provides deep insight into the relationship among modifying substances, microstructures, and electrocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Ti-based PbO2 electrodes must currently address the high overpotential and low corrosiveness of the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during zinc electrowinning. In this study, a composite electrode composed of Ti/TiH2/β-PbO2 −Mn3O4@C (0.6 g L–1) was fabricated using Ti/TiH2 generated by electrochemical reduction of Ti/TiO2 prepared by laser ablation as an intermediate layer, co-deposited β-PbO2, and Mn3O4@C micro-flakes prepared by high-temperature pyrolysis-oxidation as the active layer. In a zinc electrowinning test solution (50 g L–1 ZnSO4 mixed with 150 g L–1 H2SO4), the oxygen evolution and corrosion behavior of the obtained Ti/TiH2/β-PbO2 −Mn3O4@C composite anodes were systematically investigated. Ti/TiH2/β-PbO2 −Mn3O4@C (0.6 g L–1) exhibited a low overpotential of 493 mV, a low Tafel slope of 73.6 mV dec−1, a low icorr of 2.320 × 10−5 A cm−2 and voltage stability of 1.65 V vs. RHE for up to 72 h in stability tests, with an overall performance outperformed most of the reported Ti-based PbO2 electrode materials. The outstanding catalytic activity is primarily attributable to the low resistance and porous interlayer of TiH2 nanosheets, which speeds up the rate of electron transfer. The addition of Mn3O4@C micro-flakes to the active layer enhances the composite electrode's OER performance and corrosion resistance.

Two-step facile synthesis of Co3O4@C reinforced PbO2 coated electrode to promote efficient oxygen evolution reaction for zinc electrowinning

Abstract:The conventional Pb-Ag alloy possesses a high oxygen evolution reaction overpotential, poor stability, and short service life in acidic solutions, making it an unsuitable sort of anode material for the zinc electrowinning process. Therefore, a layered carbon-covered cobalt tetroxide (Co3O4@C)-reinforced PbO2-coated electrode is fabricated via a facile two-step pyrolysis-oxidation and subsequent electrodeposition process. As a result, the reinforced PbO2-coated electrode exhibits a low OER overpotential of 517 mV at 500 A m-2 and a Tafel slope of 0.152 V per decade in a zinc electrowinning simulation solution (0.3 M ZnSO4 and 1.53 M H2SO4). The reduced overpotential of 431 mV at 500 A m-2 compared to traditional Pb-0.76%Ag alloy leads to improved energy savings, which is attributable to the presence of Co3O4@C to refine the grain size and thus increase the effective contact area. Moreover, the reinforced PbO2-coated electrode has a prolonged service life of 93 h at 20 000 A m-2 in 1.53 M H2SO4. Therefore, an accessible and efficient strategy for preparing a coated electrode to improve OER performance for zinc electrowinning is presented in this research.

Abstract:A significant amount of energy is wasted because of the sluggish oxygen evolution process on the surface of industrial zinc electrodeposition anode materials. Here, this study proposed a ZnO-NiO transition layer to effectively prevent the passivation of titanium substrate, based on flaws of substrate passivation and low electrocatalytic activity of the PbO2/Ti anode. Meanwhile, Co2+ and MoS2 with excellent electrocatalytic performance were introduced to achieve ion-particle double doping modification of the PbO2 electrode, thus a novel Co3O4-MoxSy-PbO2/ZnO-NiO/Ti (Co-Mo-PbO2/Zn-Ni/Ti) composite electrode with high electrocatalytic performance was successfully prepared. The Co-Mo-PbO2/Zn-Ni/Ti electrode exhibits good catalytic activity, stability, and corrosion resistance of oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Moreover, the overpotential is reduced by 219 mV, the current efficiency is increased by 1.18 %, and the energy consumption per ton of metal zinc is reduced by 366.2 kW h, while compared to the traditional Pb-0.76Ag alloy anode. Additionally, the Co-Mo-PbO2/Zn-Ni/Ti electrode modified by double doping possesses the lowest corrosion rate as a zinc electrodeposition anode material, and the cathode zinc products obtained by electroplating have the lowest Pb content, which greatly improves the quality of zinc products. This work provides a new strategy for the modification of zinc electrowinning anode materials with non-precious metals.

Abstract:Presently, the most widely used anode material in industrial zinc electrowinning is lead-silver alloy, and the low corrosion resistance and high oxygen evolution overpotential of lead-silver alloy anodes are the most popular topics and urgent problems to solve in zinc electrowinning research. Herein, the Ti/Sb-SnO 2 NPs/α-PbO 2 /β-PbO 2 -CeCoO x composite anode is prepared by hydrothermal-electrodeposition. Based on the tested results of electrochemical properties, the composite anodes have a low overpotential of 545 mV at 50 mA cm −2 and a low Tafel slope of 135.19 mV dec –1 . According to the tested results of the Raman spectra, Co 4+ is the primary active material in the oxygen evolution reaction. Compared to the anode containing lead-silver alloy, the cell voltage is reduced by 0.41 V, and the electrode can operate at a high current density of 2 A cm −2 and under highly acidic conditions for 94 h, confirming excellent corrosion resistance in H 2 SO 4 solution electrolysis. The composite anode shows bright prospects for industrial applications in zinc electrowinning and other hydrometallurgy processes.

Abstract:The nonferrous metal electrowinning process is energy intensive due to the sluggish dynamics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) on the anode. Developing novel anode materials with high OER activity and stability is imperative. Herein, we propose a novel Pb-ceramic composite anode by introducing ZnFe2O4. In this work, Pb-ZnFe2O4 and PS-Pb anodes were prepared through powder pressing and sintering processes. The effects of ZnFe2O4 particles on the phase composition, surface morphology and inner structure of the oxide layer formed on Pb-ZnFe2O4 anodes were investigated. Furthermore, the role of ZnFe2O4 in the anodic potential and stability of Pb-ZnFe2O4 anodes was discussed. The results show that as the ZnFe2O4 content increases, the oxide layer formed on Pb-ZnFe2O4 anodes exhibits higher surficial compactness, higher integrity, and much smaller thickness. ZnFe2O4 exhibits a trivial impact on the oxygen evolution dynamics. However, the anodic potential of the Pb-ZnFe2O4 anode declines as the ZnFe2O4 content increases, which could be attributed to the higher compactness and smaller thickness of the oxide layer. As the ZnFe2O4 content increases, the weight loss of the Pb-ZnFe2O4 composite anode increases, suggesting the unsatisfactory stability of Pb-ZnFe2O4, which could be attributed to the inevitable dissolution of ZnFe2O4 particles, smaller thickness of the oxide layer and larger porosity of the substrate. Although Pb-ZnFe2O4 composite anodes have the potential to reduce energy consumption, their unsatisfactory stability limits the feasibility of Pb-ZnFe2O4 anodes in the electrowinning industry.

Abstract:Ti/Al/Ti/PbO 2 -WC rod composite electrodes and Ti/PbO 2 -WC composite electrodes were prepared by pulse current electrodeposition in a lead nitrate solution that contains WC microparticles, and the electrocatalytic activity of Ti/Al/Ti/PbO 2 -WC rod composite electrodes was emphasized. The surface microstructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the electrocatalysis of the oxygen evolution behavior was investigated using anodic polarization curves and cyclic voltammetry curves in a synthetic zinc electrowinning electrolyte of 50 g·L −1 Zn 2+ and 150 g·L −1 of H 2 SO 4 at 40°C. The results show that applying the Ti/Al/Ti rod substrate can clearly decrease the grain size of the PbO 2 electrodes, and the surface of electrodes become more compact. Compared with the titanium substrate electrode, applying the Ti/Al/Ti rod substrate can obviously increase the exchange current density j 0 of the PbO 2 -WC composite electrode during the process of oxygen evolution, reduce the apparent activation energy E a of the oxygen evolution reaction, increase the values of electric double layer capacitance C dl during the charging process, and improve the electrocatalytic stability. Employing the Ti/Al/Ti rod as the substrate of a composite electrode can effectively improve the electrode coating microstructure, increase the electrocatalytic activity of the oxygen evolution reaction in the electrolytic zinc liquid and exert positive effects on the application of the new substrate composite electrode.

Abstract:beta-PbO2-WC composite electrodes were prepared via direct electrodeposition in a lead nitrate solution that contains WC microparticles. The effect of WC concentration in the composite anode material was emphasized. The surface microstructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the electrocatalysis of oxygen evolution behavior was investigated using anodic polarization curves, cyclic voltammetry curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) measurements in a synthetic zinc electrowinning electrolyte of 50 g.L-1 Zn2+ and 150 g.L-1 H2SO4 at 40 degrees C. The results show that the addition of WC can clearly decrease the grain size of PbO2 electrodes, and the electrodes become more compact. Constructing of Pb-Sn/α-PbO2/β-PbO2-Co2MnO4 composite electrode for enhanced oxygen evolution and zinc electrowinning

Abstract:Developing a highly efficient and stable electrode for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in harsh conditions (∼1.63 M H2SO4) is desirable but still challenging. Herein, the paper describes Co2MnO4 modifying β-PbO2 (Pb–Sn/α-PbO2/β-PbO2-Co2MnO4) via thermal decomposition and subsequent electrodeposition. Consequently, the synthesized electrode presents a layer structure, where Pb–Sn alloy serves as the matrix, α-PbO2 functions as mid-layer to enhance the binding force between the matrix and β-PbO2, and β-PbO2-Co2MnO4 acts as active layer for OER. In addition, the obtained quasi–three–dimensional Pb–Sn/α-PbO2/β-PbO2-Co2MnO4 electrode exhibits the lowest overpotential of 571 mV for 50 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 207.1 mV dec−1 in 1.63 M H2SO4 electrolyte. Moreover, it shows the smallest corrosion rate of 0.13 mg cm−2 h−1 and the longest accelerated service life of 59 h at 2 A cm−2. Furthermore, it is used as an anode for zinc electrowinning, in which the cell voltage and power consumption for producing one–ton zinc are lower by 230 mV and 304.2 kW h as compared with the benchmark electrode of Pb-0.76%Ag alloy. Hence, this paper provides the strategy to design and construct non-precious, high–performance catalysts for electrolysis and other applications.

Abstract:The properties of Al/conductive coating/α-PbO2-CeO2-TiO2/β-PbO2-WC-ZrO2 composite anode for zinc electrowinning were investigated. The electrochemical performance was studied by Tafel polarization curves (Tafel), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and corrosion rate obtained in an acidic zinc sulfate electrolyte solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) were used to observe the microstructural features of coating. Anodes of Al/conductive coating/α-PbO2-CeO2-TiO2/β-PbO2, Al/conductive coating/α-PbO2-CeO2-TiO2/β-PbO2- WC, Al/conductive coating/α-PbO2-CeO2-TiO2/β-PbO2-ZrO2, and Pb-1%Ag anodes were also researched. The results indicated that the Al/conductive coating/α-PbO2-CeO2-TiO2/β-PbO2-WC-ZrO2 showed the best catalytic activity and corrosion resistant performance; the intensity of diffraction peak exhibited the highest value as well as a new PbWO4 phase; the content of WC and ZrO2 in coating showed the highest value as well as the finest grain size.

Abstract:Ti and β-PbO 2 coatings were successfully deposited on carbon fiber substrates by thermal decomposition and electrodeposition, and the electrochemical properties of CF/Ti/β-PbO 2 composite anodes were studied in detail. The properties of titanium metal were studied via the pyrolysis of titanium hydride, and the effects of different temperatures and titanium hydride contents on carbon fiber–titanium composites as matrix materials were studied. The Ti interlayer exhibited excellent catalytic activity and electrical conductivity. The Ti interlayer plays a very important role in improving the stability of the PbO 2 coating and the corrosion resistance of the CF/Ti/β-PbO 2 composite anode. In comparison with the traditional lead–silver alloy anode, its electrolysis current efficiency increased by 14.92%. The corrosion rate of the CF/Ti/β-PbO 2 composite anode was only 1/60 of that of the Pb–Ag anode, while its service life was 3.32 times that of the Pb–Ag anode, and 22.91 kW h per ton can be saved when electrolyzing zinc.

Abstract:Due to the excellent activity and stability of MnCo2O4 toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in acidic solution, a Pb–MnCo2O4 composite anode for zinc electrowinning was prepared by embedding dispersed MnCo2O4 particles into a Pb matrix in a powder metallurgy process. In this work, the phase structure, chemical composition, and morphology of the oxide layers formed on Pure-Pb and Pb–MnCo2O4 were analyzed by XRD, SEM, and EDS. Galvanostatic polorization, Tafel tests, and EIS measurements were performed to investigate the anodic potential variation and OER kinetics of the Pure-Pb and Pb–MnCo2O4 composite anodes. Compared with that on the Pure-Pb anode, the oxide layer on Pb–MnCo2O4 is thinner, more compact, and more stable in a 160 g L−1 H2SO4 solution containing 4 g L−1 Mn2+. Consequently, the Pb–MnCo2O4 composite anode exhibited a much lower anode slime production (8.7 mg) during 72 h of the simulated zinc electrowinning process. Despite the smaller surface area and lower PbO2 content of the oxide layer, the Pb–MnCo2O4 composite anode presented preferable OER kinetics with a lower OER charge transfer resistance (0.729 Ω cm2) and a smaller Tafel slope (90.74 mV dec−1), which contributed to a 70 mV reduction in the anodic potential compared with that of the Pure-Pb anode.

Abstract:Pulsed and constant direct current electrodepositions were applied to synthesize PbO 2 -IrO 2 nano-composites on Ti substrate. By compositing PbO 2 with nano-sized IrO 2 particles, a suitable anode was prepared for zinc electrowinning that decreases the electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction overpotential (OER) while increasing the electrochemical active surface area and the electrocatalytic activity for OER. To provide PbO 2 -IrO 2 nano-composites on Ti substrate with Sb 2 O 3 interlayer, current density, temperature, and time of anodization are optimized using the one-at-the-time method. The optimal condition for the anode involves a DC time of 1 h, incorporating 2 g L -1 of IrO 2 nanoparticles, maintaining a current density of 50 mA cm − 2 for the DC mode, and setting the pulse off-time (t off ) to 770 ms. Based on the electrochemical evaluations in a simulated zinc electrowinning electrolyte, the effect of IrO 2 nanoparticles on the catalytic activity of Ti/β-PbO 2 anode for OER was determined. Anodic polarization curves showed that the OER overpotential of PbO 2 -IrO 2 micro-composite and PbO 2 -IrO 2 nano-composites at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 decreased to 0.471 V, respectively, compared to 0.711 V for pure PbO 2 . The Nyquist plots in the OER zone confirm that the PbO 2 -IrO 2 nano-composite anode exhibits the lowest Rct 2.79 Ω compared to 6.0 Ω and 9.46 Ω for PbO 2 -IrO 2 micro-composite and pure PbO 2 , which can be attributed to the presence of electro-catalytic IrO 2 nanoparticles.

Abstract:The properties of Al/conductive coating/α-PbO 2 -CeO 2 -TiO 2 /β-PbO 2 -WC-ZrO 2 composite anode for zinc electrowinning were investigated. The electrochemical performance was studied by Tafel polarization curves (Tafel), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and corrosion rate obtained in an acidic zinc sulfate electrolyte solution. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) were used to observe the microstructural features of coating. Anodes of Al/conductive coating/α-PbO 2 -CeO 2 -TiO 2 /β-PbO 2 , Al/conductive coating/α-PbO 2 -CeO 2 -TiO 2 /β-PbO 2 - WC, Al/conductive coating/α-PbO 2 -CeO 2 -TiO 2 /β-PbO 2 -ZrO 2 , and Pb-1%Ag anodes were also researched. The results indicated that the Al/conductive coating/α-PbO 2 -CeO 2 -TiO 2 /β-PbO 2 -WC-ZrO 2 showed the best catalytic activity and corrosion resistant performance; the intensity of diffraction peak exhibited the highest value as well as a new PbWO 4 phase; the content of WC and ZrO 2 in coating showed the highest value as well as the finest grain size.

Abstract:Sn-SbOx, Sn-Sb-RuOx, and beta-PbO2 coatings were successfully deposited on a titanium substrate by using the thermal deposition and electrodeposition methods, and their electrochemical properties were investigated in detail. The Sn-Sb-RuOx interlayer played a very important role in enhancing the stability of the PbO2 coating electrodeposited at a low current density. The scanning electron microscopy results showed that the cracks in the Sn-Sb-RuOx coating were larger than those in the Sn-SbOx coating. Moreover, the Ti/Sn-Sb-RuOx/beta-PbO2 coating had many large pits with pore diameters in the range of 50-180 tun and pore depths of < 18.4 mu m. The electrodeposition mechanism of beta-PbO2 was investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Compared to the compact beta-PbO2 anode, the porous P-PbO2 anode showed superior electrocatalytic activity and electrochemical stability. A service life of 96 h was achieved for this anode under the accelerated-life-test conditions at a current density of 1 A/cm(2) in a solution of 150 g/L H2SO4 and 1 g/L Cl-.

Abstract:In this paper, a Co3O4- and CNT-doped 3D PbO2 electrode was fabricated through galvanostatic electrodeposition in a Pb(Ac)2-NH2SO3H solution, and the electrochemical properties were systematically investigated in a zinc electrolyte. The XRD results show that the deposit is a mixture of an α + β phase (a dominant β-PbO2 phase with a minor α-PbO2 phase present), and the SEM images show that Co3O4 and CNT have been simultaneously deposited with PbO2. The 3D-Ti/PbO2-(4 g·L−1) Co3O4-(0.4 g·L−1) CNT electrode exhibits a voltammetric charge 5 times larger than that of the 3D-Ti/PbO2 electrode, which indicates outstanding electrocatalytic activity. The oxygen evolution reaction overpotential and cell voltage are only 394 mV and 3.74 V at 500 A∙m−2, respectively. In addition, the obtained electrode showed a high current efficiency of 95.3% and a service life of 26 h under a current density of 20,000 A∙m−2. Hence, this study offers a facial synthesis route to prepare composite electrodes for zinc electrowinning and provides deep insight into the relationship among doping substances, microstructures and electrocatalytic activity.

Abstract:Anodic electrodeposition was used to create a high catalytic activity Co-doped PbO 2 composite coating on Ti substrate, in order to reduce the overpotential and raising the electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution during the copper electrowinning process. The temperature, composition, and current density of the electrolyte were investigated in order to produce a composite anode with the best electrocatalytic behavior, stability, and efficiency in the electrowinning process. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was utilized to investigate the morphology of the coating, and electrowinning, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and the accelerated life time test (ALT) were employed to evaluate the electrodes' electrochemical behavior. The ideal conditions in this investigation involved 65 g.L −1 cobalt nitrate with a 5 mA.cm −2 current density at 65 °C for the electrodeposition of Co-doped PbO 2 coating. Furthermore, the potential for oxygen evolution of the PbO 2 -CoO x anode was found to be approximately 180 and 220 mV lower than that of the PbO 2 and Pb-Ca-Sn anodes, respectively, based on the results of the electrochemical test. The ALT test results showed that the PbO 2 -CoO x anode had a significantly lower initial cell voltage than the Pb-Ca-Sn and PbO 2 anodes; however, this value increased after 165 h due to the anode's mechanical breakdown. The results showed that Cu electrowinning efficiency for Pb-Ca-Sn, PbO 2 , and PbO 2 -CoO x was 91.9 %, 98.4 %, and 100 % respectively.
