Abstract:A series of Ce1-xTixO2-delta mixed oxide catalysts were synthesized using a homogeneous precipitation method and characterized, and then these catalysts were applied to convert acetic acid to acetone using a gas-phase ketonization reaction. Ti-doped Ce1-xTixO2-delta catalysts (x = 0.1-0.5) exhibited much better ketonization performance than their parent catalysts of CeO2 and TiO2, and such Ti-doping-induced catalysis improvement is attributed to the formation of a Ce-O-Ti structure depending on the Ti content. Among the different Ce1-xTixO2-delta catalysts, the Ce0.7Ti0.3O2-delta catalyst calcinated at 500 degrees C showed the best catalysis activity and high stability. A combination of techniques (i.e. TEM, FTIR, H-2-TPR, NH3/CO2-TPD and XPS) further revealed that the formation of the Ce-O-Ti structure modified the surface acid-base properties and thus enhanced the redox properties. Moreover, the introduction of Ti into CeO2 also increased the number of oxygen vacancies on the catalysts' surface that favored the ketonization of acid molecules. This work provides valuable insights into the design of highly efficient CeO2-based catalysts for acid removal in the upgrading process of bio-oil.

Abstract:The conversion of carboxylic acid through ketonization process reduces O-atoms and increases C-C bonds, which can provide attractive routes for upgrading biomass feedstocks into biofuels. The key factors influencing the surface ketonization activity over CeO2-based oxides catalysts remain matters of active discourse. Here, a series of Ce1-xFexO2-delta catalysts were investigated for vapor-phase ketonization of acetic and propionic acid. The catalysts were characterized in detail using various physico-chemical techniques both before and after reaction to gain understanding of the ketonization process. The turnover frequency (TOF) based on the basic sites changed with the Fe content. The Ce0.8Fe0.2O2-(delta) sample showed the prominent ketonization activity with the highest TOF value. On one hand, for samples with a lower Fe addition (x < 0.3), the formed CeO2-like solid solution with numerous Ce-O-Fe species showed a dramatic increase in surface oxygen vacancies. These oxygen vacancies were beneficial to catalytic performance. Moreover, the superior redox properties with weaken M-0 bonds of Ce-O-Fe species thereby promote the ketonization activity. On the other hand, the higher Fe addition (x > 0.3) caused the damage of the Ce-O-Fe structure, thus reducing ketonization activity. Notably, the investigation of the reaction temperature regime of Ce0.8Fe0.O2-delta sample directly proved the existence of surface redox cycle during the ketonization process. Efficient Cu/CeO<sub>2</sub> for Ketonization of Carboxylic Acids with Synergistic Interactions

Abstract:Cost-effective heterogeneous catalysts are critical to the ketonization of carboxylic acids for producing biofuels and platform chemicals. Herein, nanocrystalline Cu-loaded CeO2 with 1.0-9.0 wt % Cu loadings was synthesized by the precipitation-impregnation method, in which 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 exhibits the best performance of 72% acetone yield at 330 degrees C, 97% 3-pentanone yield at 360 degrees C, and 86% 4-heptanone yield at 400 degrees C, with good durability up to 10 h on stream. Detailed analyses reveal that 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 has the highest percentage of O-vacancy sites, more moderate acid-base sites, and better capacity to adsorb and activate carboxylic acids. In situ DRIFT spectra indicate that monodentate, bridging bidentate, and chelating bidentate modes coexist when carboxylic acid is dissociatively adsorbed on 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2. Based on the above investigations, we propose a mechanism over 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 through the beta-ketoacid intermediate route, which gives more details to help future research into the design and development of catalysts for ketonization.

Abstract:Ketonization of carboxylic acids provides an attractive way for upgrading biomass feedstocks into biofuels. Here, a series of Mg-Al hydrotalcite (HT) catalysts doped with different Ce contents were prepared and used for the ketonization of propionic acid. Mg3Al0.9Ce0.1 displayed the highest ketonization activity (90.6% conversion of propionic acid) under mild reaction conditions (350 degrees C). By applying SEM, TEM, H-2-TPR, CO2/NH3-TPD, XPS, etc., the mechanism for the improvement of catalytic activity and stability was obtained. When the doping content of Ce is low, such as in Mg3Al0.9Ce0.1, cerium oxide is uniformly dispersed on the HT support. At the same time, the strong interaction between the CeO2 species and Mg-Al hydrotalcite led to the improvement of redox properties and modified acid-base sites, which is beneficial for the ketonization reaction. However, the structure of the HT support is destroyed by the agglomerated cerium oxide when a more doped Ce is employed, and the specific surface area and the surface Ce3+ ratio are remarkably lowered, thereby causing a significant decrease in the ketonization activity. By using the temperature programmed surface reaction (TPSR) technique, a deeper insight into the mechanism of reaction pathways over different catalysts is gained. The significant improvement in the reaction stability of the ketonization reaction over Mg3Al0.9Ce0.1 as compared to unmodified catalysts could be ascribed to the strengthening of the M-O bond of the catalyst after the introduction of Ce.
[The Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation Reaction of Acetic Acid with Ti-Ce Series Catalyst].

Abstract:The influence factors and reaction mechanism during the catalytic wet air oxidation of acetic acid with Ti-Ce series catalyst was investigated in this paper. The results show that the reaction was influenced by the catalyst load, the reaction temperature, the pH of the reaction system and the partial pressure of oxygen. More than 90% removal efficiency of acetic acid (as COD) can be obtained at the reaction conditions as follow: temperature 230 degrees C, oxygen partial pressure 2-2.5 MPa, catalyst amount 5 g/L, initial pH of the system 3.0 and reaction time 1 h. With Ion Chromatography, the formic acid formed during the reaction process was detected. The formic was found during the wet air oxidation of acetic acid in the absence of catalyst, but can not be detected during the catalytic wet air oxidation process with Ti-Ce catalyst. It means that the presence of catalyst in the system not only improve the removal efficiency, but also change the oxidation pathway.

Abstract:No-noble metal CeO2–TiO2 catalysts prepared by sol–gel method were developed and examined for catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of acetic acid. The structure of the catalysts was measured by BET, SEM, XRD, XPS and DTA-TG. We investigated the effect of the interactions of Ce and Ti on the structure of CeO2–TiO2 catalysts. The mechanisms of the relationships between the different content of Ti and the activity of CeO2–TiO2 catalysts were discussed. The results showed that the average crystal size of CeO2 decreased and the surface areas increased; the low valence of Ce3+ increase, and the chemisorbed oxygen slightly decreased with the increase of Ti content on the surface of CeO2–TiO2 catalysts. The order of the activity in CWAO of acetic acid followed: Ce/Ti 1/1 > Ce/Ti 3/1 > Ce/Ti 1/3 > Ce/Ti 5/1 > CeO2 > TiO2 > no catalyst. In CWAO of acetic acid, the optimal atomic ratio of Ce and Ti was 1, and the highest COD removal was over 64% at 230 °C, 5 MPa and 180 min reaction time over Ce/Ti 1/1 catalyst. The excellent activity and stability of CeO2–TiO2 catalysts was observed in our study.

Abstract:The Ce-TiO2 catalysts were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of Ti(OC(4)H(9))(4) with water generated "in situ" via an esterification reaction between acetic acid and ethanol, followed by hydrothermal treatment. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic absorption flame emission spectroscopy (AAS), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption methods. Both of undoped TiO2 and Ce-TiO2 samples exclusively consist of primary anatase crystallites, which further form spherical aggregates with diameters ranging from 100 to 500 nm. The photocatalytic activity of Ce-TiO2 was investigated for the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RB) aqueous solution both under UV and visible light irradiation. Doping of Ce(4+) effectively improves the photocatalytic activity under both UV light irradiation and visible light irradiation with an optimal doping concentration of 0.2 and 0.4%, respectively. The photocatalytic mechanisms of Ce-TiO2 catalysts were tentatively discussed.

Abstract:A high-pressure hydrothermal method was employed to introduce Ce element facilely into MoVTeNbO x catalysts in 0.5 h. It was indicated that Ce atoms were doped into the framework of MoVTeNbO x without changing the unique crystal structure of MoVTeNbO x . The introduction of Ce could facilitate the formation of oxygen vacancies and improve the redox ability of surfacial V. However, it was worth noting that the doping amount of Ce was negatively related to the content of M1 active phase. Within a certain range, the catalytic performance could be improved by sacrificing an appropriate amount of M1 phase. In the conversion of propylene to acrylic acid, the highest yield of 58.2% was obtained under catalyst MoVTeNbCeO x (V: Ce =1: 0.05) at 380 °C with the M1 phase content of 81.6%. The appropriate amount of Ce doping improved the propylene conversion by more than 20% compared to undoped. Moreover, the changes in Gibbs free energy of the rate-limiting step of direct oxidation of propylene before and after Ce doping were evaluated by Density functional theory (DFT). It is illustrated that the doping of Ce is thought to affect the main reason for the reduction of Gibbs free energy.

Abstract:Hydrophobizing the surface of catalysts is essential in many catalytic reactions confined by water, but it can be quite challenging for metal oxide catalysts because of their intricate structure and surface properties. Herein, a series of hydrophobic copper doped ceria-based catalysts was synthesized by introducing stearic acid over the surface of catalysts for the ketonization of acetic acid co-feeding with different concentration of water. Detailed investigations reveal that the stearic acid functionalization process obviously improves the hydrophobicity of Cu/CeO 2 without greatly changing their structures. Due to the excellent hydrophobicity to inhibit water in the reaction system, ketonization activities of acetic acid were greatly improved over the hydrophobic Cu/CeO 2 catalysts co-feeding with 10–65 mol.% water. Specifically, the acetic acid conversion and acetone yield reached 94 % and 87 % co-feeding with 47 % mol.% water at 330 °C over Cu/CeO 2 -2, respectively, outperforming stearic acid-free catalyst under the same conditions. Besides, the hydrophobic Cu/CeO 2 catalyst was with good durability up to 10 h on stream. The promotion of catalytic activities gives more details to help future research into the design and development of catalysts for future industrial applications of ketonization.

Abstract:Ti Ce complex oxide catalysts for catalytic wet air oxidation of acetic acid as model reactant were prepared by coprecipitation and impregnation methods. The catalysts are very stable during the reaction. The presence of Bi as base center has promotion effect on the catalyst activity. The optimal Bi content is about 4% (molar fraction). With the increase of calcination temperature, the BET surface area of the catalysts is decreased and so is the activity of the catalysts. The activity of the catalysts and the Bi effect are discussed based on the reference results.

Abstract:A series of 20 wt.% MO2/S catalysts (where M = Ce, Mn or Zr and S = SiO2 or Al2O3) were prepared using various precursors of the active phases. The resulting catalysts were characterized using different methods (XRD, TPR and SBET). For the first time, anhydrides were used as potential starting materials for ketone synthesis. This novel reaction was performed on various aliphatic anhydrides in the presence of catalysts within a temperature range of 523–723 K. For all anhydrides, except for pivalic anhydride, the appropriate ketones were obtained with good or very good yields. The vapor-phase catalytic ketonization of esters of benzene-1,x-dicarboxylic acids (x = 2, 3 or 4) with acetic acid were studied in the range of 673–723 K in order to obtain 1,x-diacetylbenzenes. Their yields strongly increased with an increase in the x value (0, 8 and 43% for x = 2, 3 and 4, respectively). The presence of acetophenone as a side product was always noted. In the case of ω-phenylalkanoic acids, their vapor-phase ketonization with acetic acid led to the formation of appropriate ketones with 47–49% yields. Much lower yields of ketones (3–19%) were obtained for acids and ethyl esters containing heterocycle substituents (with O or S atoms) and/or vinyl groups. In the reaction between ethyl 4-nitrophenylacetate and acetic acid, only the products of ester decomposition (p-toluidine and p-nitrotoluene) were determined.

Photocatalytic properties and the role of Ce in Co-Doped TiO2 with Ce and N

Abstract:Ce and/or N doped TiO2 catalysts were prepared by sol-gel process with tetrabutyl titanate, cerium nitrate and ammonia as raw materials. The photo catalytic activity of the as-prepared catalysts under both ultraviolet and visible light irradiation was evaluated by degradation of methyl orange. Significant improvement of photocatalytic activity were observed by codoping of TiO2 with Ce and N. X-ray diffraction (XRD), low temperature N-2 adsorption (BET), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), temperature programmed desorption of oxygen (TPD), temperature programmed oxidation (TPO) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) methods were employed to characterize the as-prepared photocatalysts for the elucidation of effects of crystal structure and surface morphology, specific surface area, optical characteristics and oxygen storage/release properties of doped catalyst on its photocatalytic performance. It has been shown that the role of proper amount Of Cc in doped catalysts played as to enhance the thermal stability of catalyst for the Suppression of growth or aggregation of crystal particles and transition of crystal phase from anantase to rutile, to promote the circulation of oxygen storage/release, and concomitantly, increase the optical absorbance, extend the light response to the visible region, suppress the recombination of charge carrier by trapping of photoinduced electrons, derive active radical species, and simultaneously, have a favorable effect on the BET surface area increase.

Abstract:Aldol condensation is a very useful reaction for biomass upgrading by coupling small molecule platform compounds into high value-added products. Here we choose acetaldehyde (AcH) condensation, the rate-determining step in bioethanol transformations, as a targeted reaction, and prepared four CeO2 catalysts with different concentrations of surface oxygen vacancies to investigate the role of oxygen vacancies in this reaction. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to demonstrate that there is a linear correlation between the activity of aldol condensation and the concentration of oxygen vacancies. Based on in-situ FTIR studies, we conclude that oxygen vacancies are the Lewis acid sites for activation and stabilization of AcH, while lattice oxygen act as base sites for the formation of enolate species which are the key intermediates for AcH coupling reactions. Moreover, the proposed reaction mechanism indicates that Ce cations which are weak Lewis acid sites are not involved in the AcH condensation.
Photocatalytic oxidation and decomposition of acetic acid on titanium silicalite

Abstract:Transient reaction of adsorbed monolayers of acetic acid was used to characterize the photocatalytic properties of titanium silicalite zeolites (TS-1). The TS-1 zeolites having Si/Ti ratios of 5, 12.5, and 50 are effective catalysts at room temperature for both photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) and decomposition (PCD) of acetic acid. The rates of PCO are higher than the rates of PCD for each catalyst. Acetic acid oxidized photocatalytically in 0.2% O2 to form gas-phase CO2 and CH4 and adsorbed H2O on the TS-1 catalysts, whereas no CH4 formed on Degussa P25 TiO2. Isotope labeling showed that, on both TiO2 and TS-1 catalysts, the alpha-carbon formed CO2 whereas the beta-carbon formed CH4 and CO2. The rates of oxidation of the two carbons have different dependencies on UV intensity. The catalysts with higher Si/Ti ratios adsorbed significantly more acetic acid, and the PCO rates per gram of titanium are highest on the TS-1 catalyst with the lowest Ti content, apparently because a larger fraction of the Ti atoms are surface atoms on this catalyst. During PCD in an inert atmosphere, CO2, CH4, and C2H6 formed on TiO2 and on the catalyst with a Si/Ti ratio of 5, but C2H6 was not detected on the other catalysts. The CO2/CH4 selectivity during PCD increased with increasing Si/Ti ratio. The first step in PCO and PCD on TS-1 catalysts appears to be similar and involves formation of a CH3 radical.
Crystal facet dependence of ketonization of propionic acid on anatase TiO2

Abstract:Exploring reaction on well-defined surface may contribute to a better understanding of structure-activity relationship for metal oxide mediated reactions. Herein, anatase TiO2 with predominantly exposed (101), (100) and (001) facets were synthesized and tested for vapor-phase ketonization of propionic acid. The intrinsic ketonization rates based on both mass and surface area at 350 °C increase following the order of TiO2(100) < TiO2(101) < TiO2(001), with the corresponding turnover frequency based on density of acid-base pair being 51.8, 71.3, and 185.2 h-1, respectively. The ketonization rate cannot be correlated with either acid/base property or concentration of oxygen vacancy, but integral band intensity ratio of monodentate/bidentate propionate, suggesting that monodentate configuration is likely the more reactive intermediate toward C-C coupling. Density functional theory calculation of propionic acid adsorption indicates the longer shortest Ti5c-Ti5c distance, and the square arrangement of surface Ti5c centers in the nearly flat surface of (001) account for the high activity of ketonization. These results indicate that the surface geometrical structure of metal oxide plays a crucial role in ketonization of carboxylic acids, and the minority (001) facet on the surface may contribute dominantly to the overall activity in ketonization on anatase TiO2. Our results also suggest facet engineering may greatly enhance the C-C coupling reactions mediated on acid-base pair of metal oxide.

Compared with untreated TiO2/La2O3, acetic acid treated TiO2/La2O3 photocatalysts exhibited higher CO2 conversion efficiency. 0.7 mol L−1 acetic acid functionalized TiO2/La2O3 photocatalyst demonstrated highest CO2 conversion efficiency (97.6%). The mechanism was researched through different characterization methods including HRTEM, FTIR, Py-IR, XPS, et al. The increased performance over TiO2/La2O3 treated with acetic acid for CO2 photoconversion is mainly due to following three factors: (1) more hydroxyls on the surface of photocatalysts promote the adsorption of CO2, (2) the number of hole traps which can inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes increases, (3) the formation of active oxygen vacancysites is promoted by La2O3 modified and the present of Lewis acidic sites.

Abstract:A series of ZrxCe1-xO2 catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation. They were characterized by BET, XRD and XPS. The catalytic wet air oxidation of acetic acid was carried out with these catalysts. It showed that the ZrxCe1-xO2 catalyst with 1 : 9 atomic ratio of zirconium to cerium demonstrated the best activity. At initial chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 5000 mg/L, reaction temperature of 230 degrees C and the pressure of 5 MPa, the removal efficiency of COD was 76% after 120 min. The good activity of this catalyst could be due to adding zirconium into CeO2 which could increase surface area and concentration of surface defect oxygen of the catalyst. This finally accelerated the formation of HO2 center dot radical and improved the activity of catalyst.

Abstract:Ketonization is an effective means of eliminating carboxylic acids from bio-oil and increasing the carbon chain. Oxygen vacancy defects in metal oxides affect the catalytic performance. However, few studies have investigated the specific effect of oxygen vacancy defects on carboxylic acid adsorption. In this work, the interaction between acetic acid and defect anatase TiO 2 (101) was analyzed using density functional theory (DFT). Surface oxygen vacancies are more difficult to form than subsurface, but acetic acid is more readily absorbed at the surface defects. The static point potential difference between surface Lewis acid and basic sites promotes the dissociation of acetic acid on both intact and defective surfaces, especially on the surface oxygen vacancies, which decreases the reaction energy barrier for water formation during ketonization. Additionally, surface oxygen vacancies convert the bidentate carboxylates formed on the perfect surface into more active monodentate carboxylates, which reduces the energy barrier for carbon–carbon coupling reactions in the ketonization. These results indicate that the surface oxygen vacancies can enhance the ketonization of acetic acid and demonstrate that the adsorption of macromolecular organics on catalysts is influenced by a combination of Lewis acidic strength, electrostatic site distribution, interfacial structure, and reactant active sites. Our results reveal in detail the effect of acetic acid adsorption on surface oxygen vacancies at the molecular level, which lays the foundation for further studies on the catalytic reaction mechanism as well as the regulation of catalysts.
