Abstract:A series of Ce1-xTixO2-delta mixed oxide catalysts were synthesized using a homogeneous precipitation method and characterized, and then these catalysts were applied to convert acetic acid to acetone using a gas-phase ketonization reaction. Ti-doped Ce1-xTixO2-delta catalysts (x = 0.1-0.5) exhibited much better ketonization performance than their parent catalysts of CeO2 and TiO2, and such Ti-doping-induced catalysis improvement is attributed to the formation of a Ce-O-Ti structure depending on the Ti content. Among the different Ce1-xTixO2-delta catalysts, the Ce0.7Ti0.3O2-delta catalyst calcinated at 500 degrees C showed the best catalysis activity and high stability. A combination of techniques (i.e. TEM, FTIR, H-2-TPR, NH3/CO2-TPD and XPS) further revealed that the formation of the Ce-O-Ti structure modified the surface acid-base properties and thus enhanced the redox properties. Moreover, the introduction of Ti into CeO2 also increased the number of oxygen vacancies on the catalysts' surface that favored the ketonization of acid molecules. This work provides valuable insights into the design of highly efficient CeO2-based catalysts for acid removal in the upgrading process of bio-oil.

Abstract:The conversion of carboxylic acid through ketonization process reduces O-atoms and increases C-C bonds, which can provide attractive routes for upgrading biomass feedstocks into biofuels. The key factors influencing the surface ketonization activity over CeO2-based oxides catalysts remain matters of active discourse. Here, a series of Ce1-xFexO2-delta catalysts were investigated for vapor-phase ketonization of acetic and propionic acid. The catalysts were characterized in detail using various physico-chemical techniques both before and after reaction to gain understanding of the ketonization process. The turnover frequency (TOF) based on the basic sites changed with the Fe content. The Ce0.8Fe0.2O2-(delta) sample showed the prominent ketonization activity with the highest TOF value. On one hand, for samples with a lower Fe addition (x < 0.3), the formed CeO2-like solid solution with numerous Ce-O-Fe species showed a dramatic increase in surface oxygen vacancies. These oxygen vacancies were beneficial to catalytic performance. Moreover, the superior redox properties with weaken M-0 bonds of Ce-O-Fe species thereby promote the ketonization activity. On the other hand, the higher Fe addition (x > 0.3) caused the damage of the Ce-O-Fe structure, thus reducing ketonization activity. Notably, the investigation of the reaction temperature regime of Ce0.8Fe0.O2-delta sample directly proved the existence of surface redox cycle during the ketonization process. Abstract:It is desired but challenging to develop a non-noble metal catalyst for the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol with O2 under solvent-free conditions. Herein, a series of Ce-doped high entropy oxides (Ce/HEOs) were prepared via co-precipitation and subsequent thermal treatment method. It was found that, the doping of Ce could remarkably promote the catalytic activity for selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. The improved activity was ascribed to the good distribution of active Ce species, the increased oxygen vacancies, and the synergistic effect between CeO2 and high entropy oxides (HEOs). In addition, the surface oxygen of Ce/HEOs towards Ce displayed stronger reducibility compared to that of bare CeO2, endowing it stronger deprotonation ability towards benzyl alcohol during the reaction. The prepared catalyst exhibited satisfactory reusability and stability owing to the entropy-stabilized effect of HEOs and the interaction between CeO2 and HEOs, and negligible loss in catalytic activity was observed after seven runs. Besides, DFT calculations disclosed that, with the doping of Ce, the Ce/HEOs catalyst possessed stronger adsorption ability towards benzyl alcohol, and lower free energy was required for the rate-determining step during the whole oxidative reaction. This work gave some insights into the promotional effect of Ce doped into high entropy oxides for the solvent-free catalytic oxidation of benzyl alcohol.
Efficient Cu/CeO<sub>2</sub> for Ketonization of Carboxylic Acids with Synergistic Interactions

Abstract:Cost-effective heterogeneous catalysts are critical to the ketonization of carboxylic acids for producing biofuels and platform chemicals. Herein, nanocrystalline Cu-loaded CeO2 with 1.0-9.0 wt % Cu loadings was synthesized by the precipitation-impregnation method, in which 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 exhibits the best performance of 72% acetone yield at 330 degrees C, 97% 3-pentanone yield at 360 degrees C, and 86% 4-heptanone yield at 400 degrees C, with good durability up to 10 h on stream. Detailed analyses reveal that 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 has the highest percentage of O-vacancy sites, more moderate acid-base sites, and better capacity to adsorb and activate carboxylic acids. In situ DRIFT spectra indicate that monodentate, bridging bidentate, and chelating bidentate modes coexist when carboxylic acid is dissociatively adsorbed on 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2. Based on the above investigations, we propose a mechanism over 3.0 wt % Cu/CeO2 through the beta-ketoacid intermediate route, which gives more details to help future research into the design and development of catalysts for ketonization.

Abstract:Ketonization of carboxylic acids provides an attractive way for upgrading biomass feedstocks into biofuels. Here, a series of Mg-Al hydrotalcite (HT) catalysts doped with different Ce contents were prepared and used for the ketonization of propionic acid. Mg3Al0.9Ce0.1 displayed the highest ketonization activity (90.6% conversion of propionic acid) under mild reaction conditions (350 degrees C). By applying SEM, TEM, H-2-TPR, CO2/NH3-TPD, XPS, etc., the mechanism for the improvement of catalytic activity and stability was obtained. When the doping content of Ce is low, such as in Mg3Al0.9Ce0.1, cerium oxide is uniformly dispersed on the HT support. At the same time, the strong interaction between the CeO2 species and Mg-Al hydrotalcite led to the improvement of redox properties and modified acid-base sites, which is beneficial for the ketonization reaction. However, the structure of the HT support is destroyed by the agglomerated cerium oxide when a more doped Ce is employed, and the specific surface area and the surface Ce3+ ratio are remarkably lowered, thereby causing a significant decrease in the ketonization activity. By using the temperature programmed surface reaction (TPSR) technique, a deeper insight into the mechanism of reaction pathways over different catalysts is gained. The significant improvement in the reaction stability of the ketonization reaction over Mg3Al0.9Ce0.1 as compared to unmodified catalysts could be ascribed to the strengthening of the M-O bond of the catalyst after the introduction of Ce.

Abstract:Ti Ce complex oxide catalysts for catalytic wet air oxidation of acetic acid as model reactant were prepared by coprecipitation and impregnation methods. The catalysts are very stable during the reaction. The presence of Bi as base center has promotion effect on the catalyst activity. The optimal Bi content is about 4% (molar fraction). With the increase of calcination temperature, the BET surface area of the catalysts is decreased and so is the activity of the catalysts. The activity of the catalysts and the Bi effect are discussed based on the reference results.

Abstract:The catalytic oxidation of VOCs is widely acknowledged as the most available technology to reduce air pollution. Among the catalysts for VOCs, 1 wt%-Pt/TiO2 catalysts using metal as a doping element have shown amazing potential in many fields. However, achieving high catalytic performance at relatively low temperatures based on the activation of molecules is still a formidable challenge owing to the catalytic activity being highly dependent on temperature. Here, the role of the rare earth metal Ce in the catalytic oxidation of ethane was studied by preparing Pt/CexTi1−xO2 (x = 0, 0.002, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02, and 0.05) catalysts. When the Ce/(Ce+Ti) molar ratio was 0.01, Pt/Ce0.01Ti0.99O2 achieved 90% ethane conversion at 436 °C. This reaction temperature is 15% lower than that for Pt/TiO2. The characterization results show that the doping of Ce caused lattice expansion of TiO2 and its distortion brought about by oxygen vacancies. Additionally, the appropriate amount of Ce-doping can alter the interaction between the active component Pt and the carrier TiO2, thereby improving the activity and concentration of the active surface lattice oxygen species of the catalyst. These results provide a foundation for the design of the catalytic oxidation of VOCs under mild operating conditions.

[The Catalytic Wet Air Oxidation Reaction of Acetic Acid with Ti-Ce Series Catalyst].

Abstract:The influence factors and reaction mechanism during the catalytic wet air oxidation of acetic acid with Ti-Ce series catalyst was investigated in this paper. The results show that the reaction was influenced by the catalyst load, the reaction temperature, the pH of the reaction system and the partial pressure of oxygen. More than 90% removal efficiency of acetic acid (as COD) can be obtained at the reaction conditions as follow: temperature 230 degrees C, oxygen partial pressure 2-2.5 MPa, catalyst amount 5 g/L, initial pH of the system 3.0 and reaction time 1 h. With Ion Chromatography, the formic acid formed during the reaction process was detected. The formic was found during the wet air oxidation of acetic acid in the absence of catalyst, but can not be detected during the catalytic wet air oxidation process with Ti-Ce catalyst. It means that the presence of catalyst in the system not only improve the removal efficiency, but also change the oxidation pathway.

Abstract:No-noble metal CeO2–TiO2 catalysts prepared by sol–gel method were developed and examined for catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO) of acetic acid. The structure of the catalysts was measured by BET, SEM, XRD, XPS and DTA-TG. We investigated the effect of the interactions of Ce and Ti on the structure of CeO2–TiO2 catalysts. The mechanisms of the relationships between the different content of Ti and the activity of CeO2–TiO2 catalysts were discussed. The results showed that the average crystal size of CeO2 decreased and the surface areas increased; the low valence of Ce3+ increase, and the chemisorbed oxygen slightly decreased with the increase of Ti content on the surface of CeO2–TiO2 catalysts. The order of the activity in CWAO of acetic acid followed: Ce/Ti 1/1 > Ce/Ti 3/1 > Ce/Ti 1/3 > Ce/Ti 5/1 > CeO2 > TiO2 > no catalyst. In CWAO of acetic acid, the optimal atomic ratio of Ce and Ti was 1, and the highest COD removal was over 64% at 230 °C, 5 MPa and 180 min reaction time over Ce/Ti 1/1 catalyst. The excellent activity and stability of CeO2–TiO2 catalysts was observed in our study.

Abstract:A high-pressure hydrothermal method was employed to introduce Ce element facilely into MoVTeNbO x catalysts in 0.5 h. It was indicated that Ce atoms were doped into the framework of MoVTeNbO x without changing the unique crystal structure of MoVTeNbO x . The introduction of Ce could facilitate the formation of oxygen vacancies and improve the redox ability of surfacial V. However, it was worth noting that the doping amount of Ce was negatively related to the content of M1 active phase. Within a certain range, the catalytic performance could be improved by sacrificing an appropriate amount of M1 phase. In the conversion of propylene to acrylic acid, the highest yield of 58.2% was obtained under catalyst MoVTeNbCeO x (V: Ce =1: 0.05) at 380 °C with the M1 phase content of 81.6%. The appropriate amount of Ce doping improved the propylene conversion by more than 20% compared to undoped. Moreover, the changes in Gibbs free energy of the rate-limiting step of direct oxidation of propylene before and after Ce doping were evaluated by Density functional theory (DFT). It is illustrated that the doping of Ce is thought to affect the main reason for the reduction of Gibbs free energy.

Abstract:Hydrophobizing the surface of catalysts is essential in many catalytic reactions confined by water, but it can be quite challenging for metal oxide catalysts because of their intricate structure and surface properties. Herein, a series of hydrophobic copper doped ceria-based catalysts was synthesized by introducing stearic acid over the surface of catalysts for the ketonization of acetic acid co-feeding with different concentration of water. Detailed investigations reveal that the stearic acid functionalization process obviously improves the hydrophobicity of Cu/CeO 2 without greatly changing their structures. Due to the excellent hydrophobicity to inhibit water in the reaction system, ketonization activities of acetic acid were greatly improved over the hydrophobic Cu/CeO 2 catalysts co-feeding with 10–65 mol.% water. Specifically, the acetic acid conversion and acetone yield reached 94 % and 87 % co-feeding with 47 % mol.% water at 330 °C over Cu/CeO 2 -2, respectively, outperforming stearic acid-free catalyst under the same conditions. Besides, the hydrophobic Cu/CeO 2 catalyst was with good durability up to 10 h on stream. The promotion of catalytic activities gives more details to help future research into the design and development of catalysts for future industrial applications of ketonization.

Abstract:Rh/TiO2, Rh-Fe/TiO2 and Rh-Fe-Ce/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by the incipient wetness impregnation method for ethanol synthesis from syngas and investigated by XRD, N2 adsorption-desorption, XPS, CO-TPD and DRIFTS techniques. The results indicated that the incorporation of Ce to Rh-Fe/TiO2 effectively coordinated the appropriate proportion of linear, gem-dicarbonyl and bridged CO species, leading to a balance between CO dissociation and CO insertion, which resulted in enhancing the CO conversion and ethanol selectivity.

Abstract:The promotional effect of Ce and Fe modified Cu-based extruded catalysts on their performance for the catalytic elimination of co-fed acrylonitrile and HCN was investigated. The CuCeFe-ZTA catalyst exhibited great catalytic performance and stability. The introduction of Ce led to an increase in the amount of active oxygen species and better reducibility of the catalyst, while more strong acid sites were formed upon further modification of the catalyst upon addition of Fe. These features are critical in promoting catalyst performance for nitrile and HCN oxidation reactions, and the results of this work may facilitate the research in developing industrial catalysts for the purification of nitrile and HCN-containing exhaust gas streams.

Abstract:Growing interest in the development of a hydrogen economy means that CO oxidation is increasingly important for upgrading H2-rich fuel gas streams for fuel cells. CeO2-supported catalysts are the most promising candidates for the catalytic oxidation of CO because of their high activity. In the present work, DFT+U calculations were performed to investigate the stability and CO oxidation reactivity of Ptn (n = 1−4) clusters supported on CeO2(111) (Pt/CeO2) and Pt-doped CeO2(111) (Pt/(Pt−Ce)O2) surfaces. The Pt clusters showed similar nucleation behavior on both CeO2 and (Pt−Ce)O2 surfaces. Further, the formation of oxygen vacancies (Ov) was facilitated because of surface charge depletion caused by the dopant Pt. Our DFT results suggest that the interfacial OV plays an important role in the CO oxidation reaction cycle, and the calculated energy barrier for the CO oxidation reaction on the Pt/(Pt−Ce)O2 surface is approximately 0.43 eV lower than that on the surface of the undoped catalyst, suggesting enhanced CO oxidation reactivity. Therefore, the chemical modification of the CeO2 support via doping is an effective strategy for improving the catalytic performance of Pt/CeO2.

Abstract:The present study reports aqueous-phase ketonization of acetic acid over different ZrO2/C catalysts and promotion of carbon in ketonization activity. Highly carbonized ZrO2 catalysts are synthesized via a sol-gel and Zr-based metal organic framework carbonization method, which possess high acetone production of 62.09 and 34.13 mmol/gZrO(2), respectively. ZrO2 catalysts with little carbon are synthesized via hydrothermal precipitation and a hydrolysis method, which possess acetone production of 13.54 and 15.51 mmol/gZrO(2), respectively. ZrO2 supported on carbon nano tubes (CNTs) exhibits increased acetone production with high CNT content but lower activity than carbonized ZrO2. Carbon release, accompanied by crystal phase transformation, leads to activity loss. Carbon species in carbonized catalysts significantly reduce crystallite size of t-ZrO2 and enhance surface properties, resulting in high activity. Small particle size also benefits aqueous-phase ketonization. Larger nanoparticles of supported ZrO(2)cover on CNT supports, and carbon and ZrO2 show much weaker interaction, resulting in lower activity than carbonized catalysts. For carbonized catalysts, acetic acid is enriched on the catalyst surface and water adsorption is weakened, enhancing ketonization reaction over active ZrO2 species.

Abstract:Synthesis of methyl methacrylate (MMA) by aldol condensation of methyl propionate (MP) with formaldehyde (FA) has received researchers' attention in recent years. Herein, a kind of acid-base bi-functional Cs/Ti-SiO 2 was developed for the conversion of MP and FA to MMA. A series of Cs/Ti-SiO 2 samples with different acid-base properties were prepared by changing the loading amount of Cs and Ti elements and characterized using XRD, BET, FT-IR, DR UV–vis, SEM, TEM, XPS, CO 2 /NH 3 -TPD, O 2 -TPO, py-IR, and TGA. The introduction of Ti species could significantly regulate the acidity and affect the surface structure of catalyst, facilitating the activation of reactants and aldol reaction effectively. The relationship between the acid-base properties and catalytic activity was correlated, which revealed the crucial role of weak and medium acid sites in this transformative process. The production of MMA was optimized by using response surface methodology (RSM) based on the Box-Behnken design (BBD) approach. As a result, 62.8 % yield of MMA with selectivity of 75.6 % could be achieved at optimal reaction conditions. The catalyst would suffer deactivation from carbon deposition, which could be easily regenerated by simple thermal treatment without any decrease in initial activity during 600 h time-on-stream. Kinetic studies unraveled the activation energy of aldol condensation was 112.2 kJ/mol.

Abstract:The Ce-TiO2 catalysts were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of Ti(OC(4)H(9))(4) with water generated "in situ" via an esterification reaction between acetic acid and ethanol, followed by hydrothermal treatment. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic absorption flame emission spectroscopy (AAS), and nitrogen adsorption-desorption methods. Both of undoped TiO2 and Ce-TiO2 samples exclusively consist of primary anatase crystallites, which further form spherical aggregates with diameters ranging from 100 to 500 nm. The photocatalytic activity of Ce-TiO2 was investigated for the photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (RB) aqueous solution both under UV and visible light irradiation. Doping of Ce(4+) effectively improves the photocatalytic activity under both UV light irradiation and visible light irradiation with an optimal doping concentration of 0.2 and 0.4%, respectively. The photocatalytic mechanisms of Ce-TiO2 catalysts were tentatively discussed.

Abstract:Ketonization is an effective means of eliminating carboxylic acids from bio-oil and increasing the carbon chain. Oxygen vacancy defects in metal oxides affect the catalytic performance. However, few studies have investigated the specific effect of oxygen vacancy defects on carboxylic acid adsorption. In this work, the interaction between acetic acid and defect anatase TiO 2 (101) was analyzed using density functional theory (DFT). Surface oxygen vacancies are more difficult to form than subsurface, but acetic acid is more readily absorbed at the surface defects. The static point potential difference between surface Lewis acid and basic sites promotes the dissociation of acetic acid on both intact and defective surfaces, especially on the surface oxygen vacancies, which decreases the reaction energy barrier for water formation during ketonization. Additionally, surface oxygen vacancies convert the bidentate carboxylates formed on the perfect surface into more active monodentate carboxylates, which reduces the energy barrier for carbon–carbon coupling reactions in the ketonization. These results indicate that the surface oxygen vacancies can enhance the ketonization of acetic acid and demonstrate that the adsorption of macromolecular organics on catalysts is influenced by a combination of Lewis acidic strength, electrostatic site distribution, interfacial structure, and reactant active sites. Our results reveal in detail the effect of acetic acid adsorption on surface oxygen vacancies at the molecular level, which lays the foundation for further studies on the catalytic reaction mechanism as well as the regulation of catalysts.

Promotional Effect of Ce on Iron-Based Catalysts for Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3

Abstract:A series of Fe–Ce–Ti catalysts were prepared via co-precipitation method to investigate the effect of doping Ce into Fe–Ti catalysts for selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3. The NO conversion over Fe–Ce–Ti catalysts was considerably improved after Ce doping compared to that of Fe–Ti catalysts. The Fe(0.2)–Ce(0.4)–Ti catalysts exhibited superior catalytic activity to that of Fe(0.2)–Ti catalysts. The obtained catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrophotometry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The data showed that the introduction of Ce results in higher surface area and better dispersion of active components on the catalyst surface and enhances the amount of surface acid sites. The interactions between Fe and Ce species were found to improve the redox ability of the catalyst, which promotes catalytic performance at low temperature. The XPS results revealed that Fe3+/Fe2+ and Ce4+/Ce3+ coexisted on the catalyst surface and that Ti was in 4+ oxidation state on catalyst surface. Ce doping increased the atomic ratio of Fe/Ti and Ce/Ti and enhanced the surface adsorbed oxygen species. In addition, Fe(0.2)–Ce(0.4)–Ti catalyst also showed better tolerance to H2O and SO2 and up to 92% NO conversion at 270 °C with 200 ppm SO2 added over 25 h, which suggests that it is a promising industrial catalyst for mid-low temperature NH3–selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction.
