Abstract:An anion-terminated branched brush was designed, and confirmed to have reversibly electrical field responsive characters, which enables the stable and reversible manipulation of the adhesion behaviors of proteins and cells in a controllable manner. To proof the concept, poly sodium allyloxy hydroxypropyl sulfonate (poly-AHPS) branched brush was grafted from electrically conductive indium tin oxide (ITO) glass slide, and was demonstrated having two states: the stretched polymer brush under negatively charged and the rolled contractive polymer structure under positively charged. The electrical capture and release of anti-Ig G via the above poly-AHPS polymer branched brushes were successfully implemented, which indicated a potential in the disease diagnosis. The electrical capture and release of K562 cells were also accomplished through the poly-AHPS polymer branched brushes, which announced a possibility in the diagnosis of myelogenous leukemia. We anticipate the electro-switchable polymer branched brushes would be adopted in the electrical manipulation of adhesion behaviors of proteins and cells, and facilitate the applications in construction of micro-sensors and micro-actuators.

Abstract:Stimuli-responsive polymer brushes modified surfaces and binary polymer surfaces can be created on an initiator terminated substrate via surface initiated atom-transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP), in which the growth kinetics can be modulated by Cu(II) ratio. As stimuli-responsive brushes, many environmental triggers can drive their conformation change such as pH and salt concentration. The external-stimuli modulated reversible conformational changes of polymer brushes can influence the charge transport behavior investigated by electrochemistry method, which have potential applications in in situ switching ion permeability and charge transport. The charge transport of binary polymer brush can be switched on or off by different ion flexibly which is an electrochemical logic switch.

Abstract:The friction of polyelectrolyte brushes of different chemistry and counterions is studied as a function of humidity. Results reveal that switchable friction occurs sharply over a narrow range in humidity and is controlled by a humidity‐induced glass transition rather than water absorption or structure directly. This tunable transition has applications for nanoactuation, reversible sticking, and lubrication in the absence of solvent. Polymer brushes have found extensive applications as nano‐scale surface coatings with responsive properties, particularly in achieving tunable friction in solvent environments. Here, a special property of hygroscopic polyelectrolyte‐grafted brushes, where the friction forces change by over two orders of magnitude within a narrow range in humidity is reported. Using mechanical measurements of nano‐scale modulus and water absorption coupled with friction and surface‐sensitive spectroscopy, this sharp change in friction is controlled by a humidity‐induced glass transition that abruptly shifts the mode of sliding is demonstrated. Contrary to expectations based on conventional thinking regarding brush lubrication, friction remains large and humidity‐independent below the glass transition even for systems that absorb as much as 30–40% water by volume. This results in an abrupt change in friction past the glass transition humidity. Tuning the chemistry of brushes and their humidity‐induced glass transition offers the tunability to control the on/off friction (or slipperiness) for nanoactuators, ratchets, and catheters, without the need for externally applied lubricating liquids.

Abstract:Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PHEMA-b-PNIPAM) was prepared by controlled surface -initiated ATRP from silicon substrates, and the resulting block copolymers were successfully converted into the corresponding PSEMA-b-PNIPAM by esterification of the hydroxy groups on the PHEMA block using excess of succinic anhydride. The PSEMA-b-PNIPAM block copolymer brushes respond to both temperature and pH stimuli. The double -responsive behavior of the block copolymer brushes in solution was investigated by height imaging and force-distance measurements of AFM. The results clearly show the responsive behavior of the smart block copolymer brushes.

Abstract:We developed a facile, but efficient, approach to graphene field-effect transistors (FET) functionalized with polymer brushes, in which the conductance can be reversibly switched by solvent-induced polymer conformational changes. Our experimental and stimulation results demonstrated that the solvent-induced conformational transition of the polymer brush could affect the carrier concentration by changing the number of,scattering sites associated with the graphene-polymer contact areas, leading to reversible electrical switching for the graphene FET device. Both end-adsorbed diblock and triblock copolymers showed similar switching effect through the solvent-induced chain stretching-collapse and tail-to-loop conformational changes, respectively. This work provides new platform technologies for developing novel electronic devices with tunable electrical properties and for studying macromolecular conformations and conformational transitions.

Abstract:Transfer printing based on switchable adhesive that heterogeneously integrates materials is essential to develop novel electronic systems, such as flexible electronics and micro LED displays. Here, we report a robust design of a thermal actuated switchable dry adhesive, which features a stiff sphere embedded in a thermally responsive shape memory polymer (SMP) substrate and encapsulated by an elastomeric membrane. This construct bypasses the unfavorable micro- and nano-fabrication processes and yields an adhesion switchability of over 1000 by combining the peel-rate dependent effect of the elastomeric membrane and the thermal actuation of the sub-surface embedded stiff sphere. Experimental and numerical studies reveal the underlying thermal actuated mechanism and provide insights into the design and operation of the switchable adhesive. Demonstrations of this concept in stamps for transfer printing of fragile objects, such as silicon wafers, silicon chips, and inorganic micro-LED chips, onto challenging non-adhesive surfaces illustrate its potential in heterogeneous material integration applications, such as flexible electronics manufacturing and deterministic assembly.
Humidity-induced glass transition of a polyelectrolyte brush creates switchable friction in air

Abstract:Polymer brushes have found extensive applications as responsive surfaces, particularly in achieving tunable friction in solvent environments. Despite recent interest in extending this technology to air environments, little is known about the impact of vapor absorption on friction. Considering polyelectrolyte brushes, we report findings that reveal, with increasing relative humidity, a trend of frictional shear forces decaying over two orders of magnitude only after achieving a critical humidity. However, water absorption, structure, and swelling of the brushes followed continuous trends with increasing humidity. In contrast, a humidity-induced glass transition occurred which caused a shift from dry to fluid-like sliding with the water-swollen brush acting as the lubricant. Below the glass transition, friction is large without regard to water concentration; thus, friction transitions sharply. This switching mechanism, shown to be a general property of the hygroscopic polymer, provides new opportunities for switchable friction or other surface actuation from vapor stimuli.

Abstract:Via computer simulations, we demonstrate how a densely grafted layer of polymers, a {\it brush}, could be turned into an efficient switch through chemical modification of some of its end-monomers. In this way, a surface coating with reversibly switchable properties can be constructed. We analyze the fundamental physical principle behind its function, a recently discovered surface instability, and demonstrate that the combination of a high grafting density, an inflated end-group size and a high degree of monodispersity are conditions for an optimal functionality of the switch.

Abstract:Two stimuli-responsive polymers, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) and poly(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (PDMAEMA), were grafted from initiator-modified anodized alumina substrates with irregular micro/nanoscale surface topography. The resulting polymer-coated surfaces exhibited highly unusual wettability properties, as spherical water/acid/alkali/salt droplets could be reversibly switched between pinned states and rolling states due to the changes of temperature, pH, and electrolytes. The key to this effect is the combination of a mixed monolayer which provides initiator points for brush growth as well as a permanently hydrophobic substrate and a surface roughness.

Abstract:This paper is the first to present a facile method of fabricating intelligent surfaces with reversible, precisely controllable, two-way responsive wettability. The ABC-type block copolymers of tert-butyl methacrylate (tBMA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and 2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DPAEMA) were synthesized through living radical polymerization mediated by a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process and then grafted onto acyl chloride group-functionalized SiO2 films to produce V-shaped PDPAEMA-b-PHEMA-b-PtBMA brush-grafted SiO2 films. After hydrolysis, V-shaped polymer brushes with two arms of PDPAEMA and PMAA were produced. Because the PMAA and PDPAEMA segments were highly and independently responsive to pH values, the as-obtained films not only exhibited reversible, one-to-one, precisely controllable wettability but also two-way response behavior as pH value increased.

Abstract:Abstract Switchable tribological properties of ferroelectrics offer an alternative route to visualize and control ferroelectric domains. Here, we observe the switchable friction and wear behavior of ferroelectrics using a nanoscale scanning probe—down domains have lower friction coefficients and show slower wear rates than up domains and can be used as smart masks. This asymmetry is enabled by flexoelectrically coupled polarization in the up and down domains under a sufficiently high contact force. Moreover, we determine that this polarization-sensitive tribological asymmetry is widely applicable across various ferroelectrics with different chemical compositions and crystalline symmetry. Finally, using this switchable tribology and multi-pass patterning with a domain-based dynamic smart mask, we demonstrate three-dimensional nanostructuring exploiting the asymmetric wear rates of up and down domains, which can, furthermore, be scaled up to technologically relevant (mm–cm) size. These findings demonstrate that ferroelectrics are electrically tunable tribological materials at the nanoscale for versatile applications.

Abstract:A smart and reversible chemo-mechanical switch was developed by synthesis of a thermally responsive block copolymer brush poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-hexafluoroisopropyl acrylate) (P(NIPAAm-co-HFIPA)) on a capillary plate. With the temperature changing around lower critical solution temperature (LCST), the designed chemo-mechanical switch exhibited excellent "ON-OFF" behavior for water transportation.
Dynamic manipulation of friction in smart textile composites of liquid-crystal elastomers

Abstract:Smart surfaces that reversibly change the interfacial friction coefficients in response to external stimuli enable a wide range of applications, such as grips, seals, brake pads, packaging films, and fabrics. Here a new concept of such a smart frictional system is reported: a composite film of a plain-weave polyester textile sheet, and a thermo-responsive nematic liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE). The composite is deployed with retractable micro-undulations of the elastomer inside each weave mesh, enabling dramatic changes of the contact interface with the opposing surface on LCE actuation, which is induced e.g. by a change in temperature (T). At ambient T, the protruding viscoelastic parts of LCE in the nematic phase make contact with the opposing flat surface, resulting in a very high friction. At an elevated T (50C, isotropic phase), the undulations of LCE surface are retracted within the thickness of the textile, and the contacts are limited to small regions around overlapping textile fibers, lowering the friction dramatically. This effect is fully reversible on heating/cooling cycles. The surface undulations are spontaneous, i.e. fabricated without any lithographic or alignment techniques. The present composite opens a new way to practical uses of sheets/films with switchable friction enabled by stimuli-responsive LCEs.

Abstract:This paper presents the first fabrication of smart films with unique reversible double-stimulus responsive wettability. In this method, the ABC-type triblock copolymers synthesized through the sequential living radical polymerizations of 2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DPAEMA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and (4-(2-methylacryloyloxy) ethyloxy-4'-trifluoromethoxy) azobenzene (MAAZO) mediated by a reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) process, were grafted onto the surfaces of SiO2 films through the reactions between the hydroxyl groups of the PHEMA middle segments and the acyl chloride groups of the SiO2 film surfaces to form specific V-shaped polymer brushes, leaving highly free PDPAEMA and PMAAZO chains. The as-obtained V-shaped polymer brush-functionalized film exhibited a peculiar reversible double-stimulus responsive wettability, which was triggered only by the joint action of pH and UV light irradiation rather than either single stimulus. This unique wettability should be attributed to the changes of the chemical state of functional groups and the distribution of surface polymer brushes under different stimuli.

Abstract:Engineered surfaces with reversibly switching interfacial properties, such as wettability and liquid repellency, are highly desirable in diverse application fields but are rare. We have developed a general concept to prepare metallic porous surfaces with exceptionally powerful wettability switch capabilities and liquid-repellent properties through an extremely simple one-step electrochemical deposition process. The wettability switch and manipulative liquid-repellent properties are enabled by orientation change of the dodecyl sulfate ions ionically bonded to the porous membranes during electrodeposition. The porous membrane with adjustable wettability enables it to trap different lubricants on demand within the pores to form liquid-infused porous surfaces with varied liquid-repellent properties. We have demonstrated the application of the (liquid-infused) porous membrane in encryption, controllable droplet transfer, and water harvesting. Moreover, the silver porous membrane can be coated onto a copper mesh, forming a smart antifouling liquid gate capable of allowing water or oil to pass through on request.
Composite elastomers with on-demand convertible phase separations achieve large and healable electro-actuation

Abstract:Phase separation has been widely exploited for fabricating structured functional materials. Generally, after being fabricated, the phase structure in a hybrid material system has been set at a specific length scale and remains unchanged during the lifespan of the material. Herein, we report a strategy to construct on-demand and reversible phase switches among homogenous, nano- and macro-phase separation states in a composite elastomer during its lifespan. We trigger the nanophase separation by super-saturating an elastomer matrix with a carefully selected small-molecule organic compound (SMOC). The nanoparticles of SMOC that precipitate out upon quenching will stretch the elastomer network, yet remain stably arrested in the elastomer matrix at low temperatures for a long time. However, at elevated temperatures, the nano-phase separation will transform into the macro-one. The elastic recovery will drive the SMOC onto the elastomer surface. The phase-separated structures can be reconfigured through the homogeneous solution state at a further elevated temperature. Taking advantage of the reversible phase switches leads to a novel strategy for designing high-performance dielectric elastomers. The in situ formed nanoparticles can boost the electro-actuation performance by eliminating electro-mechanical instability and lead to a very large actuation strain (& SIM;146%). Once the actuator broke down, SMOC could on-demand be driven to the breakdown holes and heal the actuator.
Controllable Friction of an Epoxy Composite Via Thermal Treatment

Abstract:Smart surfaces with controllable friction have generated considerable attention lately. However, most composites prepared with traditional fillers cannot achieve “real-time” friction conversion. Herein, a new smart surface was designed to achieve different friction coefficients (0.65 and 0.12). Different coefficients of friction were reversibly and precisely controlled via heating. Via friction and heating, 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorohexyl hexadecane (PHHD), a kind of phase-change material—paraffin wax—was released from the microcapsules, and a stable and complete film was formed. It changed the interface from “solid-solid” to “solid-liquid” in a dry friction state. The composite contains microcapsules that prevent phase separation between PHHD and matrix, which enables the composite to have a long service time and switchable friction performance. In addition, this composite can maintain its extraordinary ability even in harsh environments like UV irradiation. By demonstrating switchable friction based on changes in the interactions between contact interfaces, this work provides a new principle for designing smart tribological composites.

Abstract:In nature, living systems commonly adopt the switchable friction/adhesion mechanism during locomotion. For example, geckos can move on ceilings, relying on the reversible attachment and detachment of their feet on substrate surfaces. Inspired by this scientists have used different materials to mimic natural dynamic friction/adhesion systems. However, synthetic systems usually cannot work in water environments and are also limited to single-contact interfaces, while nature has provided living systems with complex features to perform energy dissipation and adhere on multiple contact interfaces. Here, for the first time, we report the design, synthesis, and testing of a novel double-sided synthetic construct that relies on nanohydrogel brushes to provide simultaneous friction switching on each side of the membrane that separates the nanohydrogel fibers. This highly tunable response is linked to the swelling and shrinkage of the brushes in basic/acid media. Such a system shows three different friction states, which depend on the combination of pH control of the two membrane sides. Importantly, each side of the membrane can independently provide continuous but stable friction switching from high to ultralow friction coefficients in a wet environment under high load conditions. An in-depth theoretical study is performed to explore the mechanisms governing the hydration state responsible for the observed switching. This novel design opens a promising route for the development of new solutions for intelligent devices, which can adapt to multistimulusresponsive complex environments.

Abstract:We propose a novel class of responsive polymer brushes, where the effective grafting density can be controlled by external stimuli. This is achieved by using end-grafted polymer chains that have an affinity to the substrate. For sufficiently strong surface interactions, a fraction of chains condenses into a near-surface layer, while the remaining ones form the outer brush. The dense layer and the more tenuous outer brush can be seen as coexisting microphases. The effective grafting density of the outer brush is controlled by the adsorption strength and can be changed reversibly and in a controlled way as a response to changes in environmental parameters. The effect is demonstrated by numerical self-consistent field calculations and analyzed by scaling arguments. Since the thickness of the denser layer is about a few monomer sizes, its capacity to form a microphase is limited by the product of the brush chain length and the grafting density. We explore the range of chain lengths and grafting densities where the effect is most pronounced. In this range, the SCF studies suggest that individual chains inside the brush show large rapid fluctuations between two states that are separated by only a small free energy barrier. The behavior of the brush as a whole, however, does not reflect these large fluctuations, and the effective grafting density varies smoothly as a function of the control parameters.
