Abstract:We present recent development on integrated flexible and stretchable photonic devices. Conventional photonic devices are fabricated on rigid semiconductor or dielectric substrates and are therefore inherently incompatible with soft biological tissues. Recently, we have developed a suite of active and passive photonic devices and systems integrated on plastic substrates which can be bent, twisted, and stretched without compromising their optical performance. Key innovations are monolithic multi-material integration and advanced micro-mechanical structures co-designed with photonic devices, which enables devices with extreme mechanical flexibility and excellent optical performance.

Abstract:Mechanically stretchable photonics provides a new geometric degree of freedom for photonic system design and foresees applications ranging from artificial skins to soft wearable electronics. Here we describe the design and experimental realization of the first single-mode stretchable photonic devices. These devices, made of chalcogenide glass and epoxy polymer materials, are monolithically integrated on elastomer substrates. To impart mechanical stretching capability to devices built using these intrinsically brittle materials, our design strategy involves local substrate stiffening to minimize shape deformation of critical photonic components, and interconnecting optical waveguides assuming a meandering Euler spiral geometry to mitigate radiative optical loss. Devices fabricated following such design can sustain 41% nominal tensile strain and 3000 stretching cycles without measurable degradation in optical performance. In addition, we present a rigorous analytical model to quantitatively predict stress-optical coupling behavior in waveguide devices of arbitrary geometry without using a single fitting parameter.

Abstract:Flexible photonic devices, which arc bendable, foldable, and even stretchable, arc not limited to the rigid physical state constraints of traditional optoelectronic devices and thus unique tunable optoelectronic properties could be achieved, which greatly expands the development and practical implementation of traditional optoelectronic devices. Combining with new functional optical materials, novel device integration technologies, and the advantages of photonic devices over electronic devices in material sensing specificity, channel capacity, and resistance to electromagnetic interference, flexible photonic devices show great research and application value in emerging and interdisciplinary fields such as wearable sensing, high-speed optical interconnect, light field manipulation, and optogenetic applications in biology. However, challenges including the fabrication difficulties, mechanical flexibility limitation, and the degree of integration exist in current flexible photonic technologies. This paper briefly reviews the recent progress on flexible photonic materials and devices to address those challenges. And further development and application demonstration for the flexible photonics has also been summarized and discussed.

Abstract:Flexible electronics, compared with conventional rigid electronics, have opened up a wide range of applications in wearable devices due to their flexibility and stretchability. However, flexible electronics as the ingenious combination of inorganic brittle electronics and soft elastic substrates are based mainly on two dimensional flat layouts, which limit their further applications. Shape memory polymers, as a class of smart materials are capable of fixing temporary programmed shapes and recovering to their permanent shape upon external stimulations. Their controllable shape changing properties and tunable moduli make them show unique benefits in the field of electronics. The use of shape memory polymers in flexible electronics allows the fabrication of deployable three-dimensional devices and more flexible and controllable device manufacturing typically as transfer printing. Transfer printing, in the field of electronics, is a kind of techniques for selective assembly of micro and nano electronic devices into spatial and functional arrangements. Therefore, shape memory polymers for flexible electronics can either be the flexible substrates for electronics or be the controllable stamps for transfer printing of electronic devices. This paper reviews the recent progress on using shape memory polymers as versatile substrates for flexible electronics and the stamps for transfer printing. Finally, the prospects for their future applications in this important field are described.

Abstract:We demonstrated stretchable, high-index-contrast photonic devices monolithically integrated on a PDMS elastomer substrates. The devices can sustain 42% strain and 3,000 stretching cycles without measurable optical performance degradation.

Over the past few years, we have developed a suite of active and passive photonic devices and systems integrated on plastic substrates which can be bent, twisted, and stretched without compromising their optical performance. Here we review the latest progress in this emerging field, and discuss the rational material and mechanical engineering principles underlying the extraordinary flexibility of these photonic structures. Leveraging these design strategies, we demonstrated bendable glass waveguide circuits, flexible waveguide-integrated nanomembrane photodetectors, and stretchable photonics.

Abstract:While the vast majority of integrated photonic devices are traditionally fabricated on rigid substrates, photonic integration of both passive and active photonic devices on flexible polymer substrates has been demonstrated in recent years, and its applications in imaging, sensing and optical interconnects are being actively pursued. This paper presents an overview of the emerging field of mechanically flexible photonics, where we examine material processing and mechanical design rationales dictated by application-specific optical functionalities. The examples include semiconductor nanomembranes which serve as the key enabling material for hybrid inorganic-organic flexible active photonics, and monolithically integrated passive photonic structures fabricated from semiconductors, polymers, or amorphous materials. Technical challenges and further research opportunities related to materials engineering and device integration on flexible substrates are also discussed. (c) 2013 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In article number 1800466, Cunjiang Yu and co-workers developed a class of tough and flaw insensitive stretchable electronics by employing a composite substrate of nylon fabric and rubber with unprecedented mechanical characteristics. Tough and flaw insensitive stretchable devices including stretchable electrodes, supercapacitors, and photodetectors are demonstrated. This cover illustrates the tough and stretchable composite substrate in a layered lamination configuration.

Abstract:Transfer printing is an emerging deterministic assembly technique for micro-fabrication and nano-fabrication, which enables the heterogeneous integration of classes of materials into desired functional layouts. It creates engineering opportunities in the area of flexible and stretchable inorganic electronics with equal performance to conventional wafer-based devices but the ability to be deformed like a rubber, where prefabricated inorganic semiconductor materials or devices on the donor wafer are required to be transfer-printed onto unconventional flexible substrates. This paper provides a brief review of recent advances on transfer printing techniques for flexible and stretchable inorganic electronics. The basic concept for each transfer printing technique is overviewed. The performances of these transfer printing techniques are summarized and compared followed by the discussions of perspectives and challenges for future developments and applications.

Abstract:Flexible and stretchable inorganic electronics, offering the high performance of conventional electronics with the ability to be deformed like a rubber, integrate inorganic electronic materials with flexible substrates and has enabled many novel applications ranging from curvilinear electronics, epidermal electronics to bio-integrated electronics. However, inorganic electronic materials (e.g., silicon) cannot be fabricated directly on a flexible substrate due to the extreme processing conditions (e.g., high temperature). To overcome this challenge, transfer printing techniques have been developed to pick up inorganic thin films from the grown substrate and transfer them onto the receiver substrate for the heterogeneous integration. This approach separates the fabrication substrate with the application substrate and provides a most promising solution for the integration of inorganic electronic materials with flexible substrates to develop flexible and stretchable electronics. This paper provides a brief review of recent advances on mechanics of transfer printing techniques for flexible and stretchable inorganic electronics including kinetically controlled transfer printing technique, shear-enhanced transfer printing technique, gecko inspired transfer printing technique, surface-relief-assisted transfer printing technique, laser-driven transfer printing technique, bending curvature controlled transfer printing technique and tape transfer printing technique. The basic concepts for each transfer printing technique are overviewed to illustrate the key roles of mechanics in the development of transfer printing techniques. Despite the successful developments of various transfer printing techniques, several challenges still exist for future transfer printing techniques with the capabilities of transfer printing of nano-devices and direct three-dimensional transfer printing in a large-scale and high-efficiency manner.

Abstract:Stretchable electronics are essential for the development of intensely packed collapsible and portable electronics, wearable electronics, epidermal and bioimplanted electronics, 3D surface compliable devices, bionics, prosthesis, and robotics. However, most stretchable devices are currently based on inorganic electronics, whose high cost of fabrication and limited processing area make it difficult to produce inexpensive, large-area devices. Therefore, organic stretchable electronics are highly attractive due to many advantages over their inorganic counterparts, such as their light weight, flexibility, low cost and large-area solution-processing, the reproducible semiconductor resources, and the easy tuning of their properties via molecular tailoring. Among them, stretchable organic semiconductor devices have become a hot and fast-growing research field, in which great advances have been made in recent years. These fantastic advances are summarized here, focusing on stretchable organic field-effect transistors, light-emitting devices, solar cells, and memory devices.

Abstract:Truly stretchable electronics, wherein all components themselves permit elastic deformation as the whole devices are stretched, exhibit unique advantages over other strategies, such as simple fabrication process, high integrity of entire components and intimate integration with curvilinear surfaces. In contrast to the stretchable devices using stretchable interconnectors to integrate with rigid active devices, truly stretchable devices are realized with or without intentionally employing structural engineering (e.g. buckling), and the whole device can be bent, twisted, or stretched to meet the demands for practical applications, which are beyond the capability of conventional flexible devices that can only bend or twist. Recently, great achievements have been made toward truly stretchable electronics. Here, the contribution of this review is an effort to provide a panoramic view of the latest progress concerning truly stretchable electronic devices, of which we give special emphasis to three kinds of thin film electronic and optoelectronic devices: (1) thin film transistors, (2) electroluminescent devices (including organic light-emitting diodes, light-emitting electrochemical cells and perovskite light-emitting diodes), and (3) photovoltaics (including organic photovoltaics and perovskite solar cells). We systematically discuss the device design and fabrication strategies, the origin of device stretchability and the relationship between the electrical and mechanical behaviors of the devices. We hope that this review provides a clear outlook of these attractive stretchable devices for a broad range of scientists and attracts more researchers to devote their time to this interesting research field in both industry and academia, thus encouraging more intelligent lifestyles for human beings in the coming future.

Abstract:Flexible and stretchable optoelectronics have attracted attention in recent years due to their remarkable capabilities for use in wearable computers, personal monitors, and other systems. These devices are conformal to human skin or tissue due to mechanical compliance, which is extremely suitable for biomedical or clinical applications, such as bionic devices, monitors, or curing diseases. This paper presents an overview of the flexible and stretchable inorganic optoelectronics, including mechanical design, photonic analysis, fabrication processing, some examples of the devices, and their applications in biomedical engineering. First, the recent technological advances in flexible designs and fabrication strategies are summarized. Then, the flexible and stretchable devices with different functionalities are described, including light-emitting devices, photodetectors, and other optical devices. Finally, we show the applications of flexible and stretchable optoelectronics on biomedical engineering. Abstract:Stretchable electronics enables lots of novel applications ranging from wearable electronics, curvilinear electronics to bio-integrated therapeutic devices that are not possible through conventional electronics that is rigid and flat in nature. One effective strategy to realize stretchable electronics exploits the design of inorganic semiconductor material in a stretchable format on an elastomeric substrate. In this review, we summarize the advances in mechanics and thermal management of stretchable electronics based on inorganic semiconductor materials. The mechanics and thermal models are very helpful in understanding the underlying physics associated with these systems, and they also provide design guidelines for the development of stretchable inorganic electronics.

Abstract:With rapid development of wearable electronic technology, flexible thermoelectrics have become an important research topic in the field of wearable energy devices, owing to their sustainable power-supply ability, flexibility, and portability. However, the application of flexible thermoelectric devices in wearables is limited by their low stretchability, lack of breathability, and poor functional integration. Fiber-based stretchable thermoelectric devices with one-dimensional structure feature properties such as small size, lightweight, large deformation, and weavability, which make them suitable for integration into wearable fabrics. In addition, these devices can harvest thermal energy from human body. In this study, the materials, structures, and processing techniques developed for the fabrication of stretchable fiber thermoelectric devices are reviewed. Thereafter, their applications in self-powered sensing, energy harvesting, and thermoelectric cooling are discussed. Finally, a summary and an outlook are provided on the development of fiber thermoelectric devices wherein the key challenges of their practical applications are highlighted.

Abstract:Stretchable electronics is an emerging technology that creates devices with the ability to conform to nonplanar and dynamic surfaces such as the human body. Current stretchable configurations are constrained to single-layer designs due to limited material processing capabilities in soft electronic systems. Here we report a framework for engineering three-dimensional integrated stretchable electronics by combining strategies in material design and advanced microfabrication. Our three-dimensional devices are built layer by layer through transfer printing pre-designed stretchable circuits on elastomers and creating vertical interconnect accesses using laser ablation and controlled soldering. Our approach enables a higher integration density on stretchable substrates than single-layer approaches and allows new functionalities that would be difficult to implement with conventional single-layer designs. Using this engineering framework, we create a stretchable human–machine interface testbed that is based on a four-layer design and offers eight-channel sensing and Bluetooth data communication capabilities.

Abstract:Sensors, actuators and integrated circuits (IC) can be encapsulated together on an elastic substrate, which makes a flexible electronic system. In this system, electrical interconnections that can sustain large and reversible stretching are in great need. This paper is devoted to the fabrication of highly stretchable metal interconnections. Transfer printing technology is utilized, which mainly involves the transfer of 100-nm-thick gold ribbons from silicon wafers to pre-stretched elastic substrates. After the elastic substrates relax from the pre-strain, the gold ribbons buckle and form wavy geometries. These wavy geometries change in shapes to accommodate the applied strain and can be reversely stretched without cracks or fractures occurring, which will greatly raise the stretchability of the gold ribbons. As an application example, some of these wavy ribbons can accommodate high levels of stretching (up to 100%) and bending (with curvature radius down to 1.20 mm). Moreover, the efficiency and reliability of the transfer, especially for slender ribbons, have been increased due to the improvement of the technology. All the characteristics above will permit making stretchable gold conductors as interconnections for flexible electronic systems such as implantable medical systems and smart clothes.
