Abstract:This study takes the "New Silicon Valley" Hangzhou to discuss the relationship about the resources and development. The resource-based view provided a systematic approach for analyzing the role of Hangzhou in terms of its potential sustained competitive advantage in technology development. In this study, we suggest that each resource can enhance the technology development, but the potential of each resource should not be viewed in isolation. Two intervening variables are talents and capabilities. We not only integrate three resources, but also study at their interface. Thus, we put forward eight propositions include the interplay, isolated impact and combined affect.

Abstract:Based on Nahapiet and Ghoshal's three dimension of social capital including the structural, the relational and the cognitive([1]), this study examined the relationship between social caoital and organizational effectiveness and the interrelations among the three dimensions in the context of high-tech industries. The moderating effects of entrepreneurial orientation were investigated further. A survey was conducted of 148 high-tech ventures, results from structural equation modeling suggest that structural capital and relational capital only have one effect on non-financial or financial performance, while cognitive capital has both two, and the three dimensions of social capital have a complicated interrelation among themselves. Results from multiple regressions indicated the, moderating effects of entrepreneurial orientation only exist in some given conditions. Implications and future research directions are proposed.

Abstract:Due to the resources constraints, it is hardly for firms to acquire all the technologies they need just depending on their in-house research and development in today's highly competitive environment. Therefore, acquiring technologies by effective means becomes an important issue for firms as to technological management. Based on a sample of 213 private enterprises of Zhejiang province, which are divided into hi-tech private enterprises and traditional private enterprises according to technical abilities, this paper studies the characteristics deeply in choosing technical sources of the two groups respectively, as well as reveals the significant differences between them. The paper also proposes some suggestions to private enterprises, especially to traditional private enterprises, and to government in order to promote technological innovation of private enterprises

Abstract:Lack of resource is usually a major constraint in the development of high-tech start-ups.Through cooperation based on resources complementary,risk sharing,and profit sharing,strategic alliances could be an effective way for the high-tech start-ups to catch up the entrepreneurial opportunity and achieve the rapid growth.The strategic alliances between high-tech start-ups and established firms are focused,and motivation-behavior-returns overall analysis framework from the resource-based view and the strategy-structure perspective is preliminary established,then an in-depth case study of Highlander Digital Technology Stock Co.Ltd as a typical high-tech start-up is conducted and the intrinsic mechanism for accessing resource and achieving growth by building strategic alliances is analyzed.It is found that after strategic alliances,high-tech start-ups are able to realize mutual complement of resources,clarify the strategy,improve the organizational structure,and finally achieve business growth and performance improvement through inter-organizational cooperation,communication,and learning with partner enterprises.A detailed motivation-behavior-returns model for high-tech start-ups to build strategic alliances is proposed.

Abstract:To realize self-reliant innovation, competencies and dynamic capabilities must be built at the firm level. The experiences of leading companies show the importance of the combination and organization of present and future sets of technological competencies. As a developing country, the process of competencies accumulation in China is different from those countries that are scientifically and technologically more advanced. The elements of competencies in Chinese firms should be drawn by the practical situation. Thus in this paper, the authors provide a new framework for competencies accumulation for Chinese firms, then, based on the case studies on technology-based firms to verify their findings, several policy suggestions are also provided to those technology-based firms
Performance Impact of Technological Assets and Configuration Capabilities:An Empirical Research of Chinese New Ventures

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to investigate the rela-tionships between firm resources and performance. We divide firm resources into two types: primary resources and sup-port resources. Primary resources include technological as-sets and configuration capabilities,which directly contribute to a firm’s competitive advantage. Support resources include internal human capital,inter-firm collaboration,and manage-rial vision,which contribute to the development of primary resources. Using a sample of 548 new ventures in China,our analysis revealed that both technological assets and configura-tion capabilities significantly enhanced firm performance that the firms with superior technological assets tended to posses superior configuration capabilities,and that most of the sup-port resources significantly contributed to the development of both technological assets and configuration capabilities,spe-cifically,both internal human capital and inter-firm collabora-tion greatly improved firms’ technological assets; both inter-firm collaboration and managerial vision have heavy impact on firms’ configuration capabilities. The present study makes several contributions to the resource-based view of the firm (RBV) literature. First,we conceptually distinguished between technological assets and configuration capabilities and empiri-cally examined their impact on performance,which clearly suggest that the "using" decision was even more important than the "owing" decision. Secondly,we examined the systematic relationships between primary and support resources,which suggest that primary and support resources work dynamically in a complementary manner to develop a firm’s competitive advantage. Thirdly,we empirically addressed all the relation-ships in a large sample of Chinese new ventures. Practically,the present study has two implications for managers. First,the evidence suggests that the impact of configuration capabilities on performance is even greater than that of technological assets although both have substantial positive performance effects. Secondly,the evidence suggests that inter-firm collaboration is a very effective means of developing configuration capabilities and is substantially superior to internal development.

Abstract:Based on the theory of resource bricolage, this study adopts the method of fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) to explore the multiple interaction mechanisms of the founder's internal powerful resources (knowledge resources, management rights resources, and control rights resources) and external relationship resources (political relations resources and social relations resources) on firm innovation investment. The main findings are as follows: (1) the five key resources of founders can't contribute to the result of high firm innovation investment alone, but they can play a role together through arrangement and management, resulting in "resource synergy" effect; (2) the internal-external resource combination of founders can be divided into two paths: "internal-driven" and "internal-external matching", and each path contains different ways of resource combination, however, the "external-driven" path does not exist; (3) according to the analysis of configuration, it is found that compared with the external relationship resources, the founders pay more attention into cultivating internal powerful resources is more conducive to the improvement of the level of firm innovation investment; (4) the external political relationship resources of the founder play a supplementary role in firm innovation decision-making with all paths. This study shows that the value of founder resources comes from the combination management of internal and external resources. From the perspective of configuration, this study studies the relationship between founders' individual resources and firm innovation investment, which provides a new idea for the research of firm innovation field.

Abstract:In today's rapidly evolving business environment, sustaining competitive advantage demands an integrated approach that combines the strengths of both the Resource-Based View (RBV) and Dynamic Capabilities (DCs). RBV emphasizes the importance of valuable, rare, inimitable, and non-substitutable (VRIN) resources as key drivers of long-term success. However, its static nature limits its effectiveness in dynamic markets where adaptability is crucial. Dynamic Capabilities address this gap by focusing on a firm's ability to sense opportunities and threats, seize opportunities, and transform resources in response to external changes. This paper proposes an integrated framework that leverages VRIN resources while enhancing the firm's adaptability through Dynamic Capabilities. The framework offers a strategic guide for firms to balance the protection and exploitation of core resources with the development of capabilities necessary for continuous innovation and flexibility. Empirical applications suggest that this dual approach is particularly effective in industries characterized by high volatility and technological disruption. By integrating RBV and DCs, firms can better navigate uncertainty, ensuring sustained competitive advantage in a rapidly changing marketplace. Abstract:Organizations today desire strategies that place them on the frontiers of service innovation. In this research, we provide a novel research framework that incorporates resources and capabilities and how they affect elements of service innovation. This research draws on the resource-based view of the firm to define firm’s internal resources and outside (i.e., relational) capabilities. Because firms compete in a dynamically changing market, we introduce dynamic service capabilities as three distinct processes that allow resources and relational capabilities to affect components of service innovation. Three propositions are introduced in addition to specific examples of promising future empirical work using service-oriented firms. This study aims to contribute to service innovation through a theoretical foundation in which we posit how firms develop their service innovation through a dynamic service capabilities framework. Contributions to theory and practice are discussed in addition to limitations to the study.

How Software Startups Survive: a Model Based on Resource-based View and Dynamic Capabilities.

Abstract:Rapid advances of IT have encouraged many software startups to enter the market place. Our research seeks to investigate the little-studied phenomenon of software startup survival. The research is based on the resource-based view and on dynamic capabilities. We present a research model that investigates factors affecting software startup survival by examining how startups survive in their competitive environment. First, we categorize the resources of software startups into three areas based on socio-technical theory. Specifically, we view entrepreneurial resources as influencing both IT innovation and environmental resources. Second, we view dynamic capabilities as mediating the relationship between interactions among resources and software startup survival. Finally, we investigate the effect of competitive actions in moderating the relationship between dynamic capabilities and software startup survival. Our research seeks to contribute to extant research by proposing the first empirical study of which we are aware that addresses factors influencing software startup survival.

Abstract:New ventures often face the challenge of resource scarcity, and how to overcome the resource constraint problem and improve new venture sustainability has been a long-standing concern of scholars and practitioners. Most existing studies have explored the impact on the financial performance of new ventures of a single factor, and few studies have focused on the impact of the configuration effect of multiple factors on new venture sustainability. In this paper, based on the configuration theory and resource orchestration theory, we use fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) with a sample of 189 entrepreneurs to explore the mechanisms driving the configuration effects of multiple factors of entrepreneurial decision-making logic, resource bundling, and environmental uncertainty on new venture sustainability. The empirical results show that the paths to achieve high new venture sustainability are diverse and equivalent, and effectuation is a core antecedent condition in all paths. There are four conditional configurations of the drivers of high sustainability in new ventures, including dual-logic resource integration, market-driven resource integration, means–resource innovation in emerging markets, and resource-rich or resource-creating integration under dual logic.

Abstract:The resource-based view (RBV) provides a rich framework for analyzing the role of a firm’s tangible and intangible resources in creating and sustaining competitive advantage. As a result, it has been widely used to explain entrepreneurial firms’ strategic choices that generate such an advantage. While researchers have established the usefulness of the RBV, they have overlooked the fundamental question of how entrepreneurial firms manage their resources to gain competitive advantage. This paper examines this issue in the context of independently owned startups, which typically lack resources, are constrained in their access to key resource providers, and have limited experience in assembling and managing resources. Adopting a broader conceptualization of startups’ resource management process, the paper identifies several questionable assumptions in related RBV-based research. Further, recognizing the limits of RBV to determine ex ante the nature and magnitude of entrepreneurs’ resourcefulness when managing their resources, the paper suggests linkages between the RBV and several entrepreneurship frameworks and outlines promising research questions.

Abstract:This paper examines two research questions: (1) how do strategic alliance resources influence new product outcomes, and (2) how do these effects differ under different NPD process characteristics. By integrating resource-based view and coordination literature, the authors argue that both marketing and technology resources demonstrate independent and interactive effects on new product innovativeness, speed to market, and market performance. Further, the individual effects of marketing and technology resources are moderated by the process characteristics of partner interdependence, while the interactive effect between marketing and technology resources is moderated by the development process characteristic of task interdependence. Using primary dyadic data collected from 142 international high-tech strategic alliances in China, we test and find general support for these arguments. The results provide significant theoretical implications for a variety of research streams, as well as managerial implications for strategic alliances with Chinese firms.

Abstract:The evolution of information technology (IT) in firms can be captured in some stages, and each stage displays distinct characteristics regarding the application of IT and has different objectives. Thus, different IT resources and skills are needed in different stages. The purpose of this paper is to develop the theoretical links between IT capability and the stage of firm's using IT. Firstly, three stages of IT applications in the firms are identified: internal integration focus effectivity, external integration focus effectivity and strategic orientation. Secondly, three levels of IT capability are analyzed in detail. Based on resource-based view (RBV), a model linking the level of IT capability with the stage of IT applications is built finally in this paper. In order to build competitive advantage, firms must cultivate and upgrade its IT capability dynamically according to the evolution of IT applications.

Abstract:Understanding the influence of resources on the new firm’s growth remains a difficult challenge for scholars. Prior research has suggested that the impact of human capital or technological resources is limited and does not provide an explanation on why some new firms grow faster than others. In this research we propose to explore the complementary and substitution effects between these resources using Kauffman Firm Survey (KFS) Dataset. We also introduce market resources to further understand the influence dynamics of resources in early stage growth. We follow the evolution of a sample of firms in a high tech industry to test our hypotheses. The results show that besides the direct effects of human, technological and market resources, it is the complementary and substitution effects across them that provides additional valuable information to understand their impact on new firm’s growth.
