The Design and Selection of the Multiple Studies Pattern in Organizational Management Research

Abstract:Although the empirical research with more than one subsidiary studies is not rare, how to design a high-level multiple studies research is still not clear. Based on the knowledge creation perspective, this study proposes a general analysis framework including three basic patterns of multiple studies design, namely the method extension pattern, the content iteration pattern and the content extension pattern. Utilizing the framework, this study further analyzes the relationships between 112 subsidiary studies of 39 articles published in 4 major international management academic journals. The results show that the multiple studies using the content iteration pattern, the content extension pattern and the method extension pattern account for 33.33%,23.08% and 12.82%,respectively, and that 30.77% of the studies adopt a combination of the three patterns. Moreover, the subclasses of each pattern are introduced, and the relationships among the subsidiary studies and the choice of multiple studies patterns are analyzed. Finally, this study offers several suggestions for future design of multiple studies research.
