Abstract:Abnormal soft tissue tension may lead to the reduction the success rate of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and patients' satisfaction level. But soft tissue balancing is always a critical but challenging section during TKA. In the paper, finite element method was used to study the kinematics of tibiofemoral joint. Result shows that the deformity of the ligament directly leads to the imbalance of pressure on both sides of the prosthetic gasket, and a knee prosthesis gasket sensor (PGS) that can measure the three-dimensional contact force between the tibiofemoral joint was designed. The result of measurement will assist to doctor's judgment to situation of soft tissue tension. The shape of this sensor is exactly same as the standard knee prosthetic gasket. Six sensing elements were mounted as measuring elements inside and genetic algorithm was used to optimize the layout of these sensors. After testing, the PGS shows good performance in linearity, hysteresis and repeatability.
