Abstract:This study presents that flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) can concurrently remove salts and nutrient ions from wastewater effluent and recover them as concentrate efficiently. Compared with complex biological nutrient removal, this electrochemical method utilizes the ionic nature of salts and nutrient species (NE4+-N, NO3--N, PO43--P) to enable simple nutrient removal and desalination. The FCDI with separated anode and cathode (FCDI-S) removed 70-98.5% salinity, 49-91% PO43--P, 89-99% NH4+-N, and 83-99% NO3--N under the 5-15 wt % electrode loadings. When a reverse potential was applied, more than 80% of the removed nutrient ions were recovered in the concentrate during discharging operation. Furthermore, when connected flow operation (FCDI-C) was implemented that allowed external electrode mixing, more adsorption sites were freed up, which resulted in 43.5 +/- 2.2% increase in PO43--P removal, 12.3 +/- 1.1% increase in NH4+-N removal, and 9.9 +/- 0.3% increase in NO3--N removal. This electrochemical method provides a new alternative nutrient removal and recovery solution especially for distributed applications.

Abstract:The escalating global population growth, the aspiration for improved living standards, environmental concerns, and the rising focus on circular economy frameworks have collectively emphasized the imperative to recover resources such as nutrients, water, and energy. Despite the notable advantages and technological capabilities of capacitive deionization (CDI) systems, their potential remains largely untapped. This comprehensive review aims to synthesize and analyze the progress made in CDI systems for nutrient recovery. It concentrates on two vital wastewater nutrients: nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). The study explores both conventional and advanced CDI systems, including CDI, membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI), flow electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI), and hybrid capacitive deionization (HCDI). In three key areas, a detailed framework for recovering nitrogen, phosphorus, and both is provided: (1) process optimization, (2) innovative cell design, and (3) process development for effectively integrating CDI with complementary techniques, enabling simultaneous ion recovery and the production of value-added products. Additionally, future perspectives on CDI development and expansion for nutrient recovery are discussed in this review with an emphasis on aligning these efforts with circular economy goals.

Abstract:Water resources are the basis for human survival and development. However, human beings face severe challenges of water pollution and freshwater shortage. With the critical advantages of low energy consumption, high efficiency, low cost, green and pollution-free, and renewable electrodes, capacitive deionization (CDI) has become an up-and-coming water treatment technology. After decades of development, the application of CDI has expanded from seawater desalination to many fields. However, the existing literature still needs a comprehensive overview of the multi-functional application of CDI technology in water treatment. Therefore, our work critically reviewed the latest research progress of CDI in water treatment to meet the technical requirements of various application fields. This paper first summarizes the various applications of CDI in water treatment, focusing on CDI's representative research results in heavy metal removal, organic contaminants removal, water softening, phosphate and nitrate removal, and water disinfection. In addition, we also discussed the latest research progress of energy recovery and energy consumption assessment for the CDI process. Finally, this paper discusses the challenges and future opportunities facing CDI technology.

Abstract:Nitrate concentrations in groundwater frequently exceed permissible levels for potable water in intensive agricultural regions. It is critical to develop highly efficient techniques for the removal of nitrate at low cost, without the addition of chemicals. In this study, we report on an advanced and efficient approach, referred to as electrodeionization (EDI), for effectively removing and concentrating nitrate with low energy consumption. An additional merit of this process was that hardness ions, such as Ca2+ and Mg2+, were also simultaneously removed from the dilute compartment and recovered in concentrate compartment. Furthermore, the limiting current was systematically investigated and the impacts of different applied currents, water flow rates, and ratios of cationic and anionic exchange resins on the performance of nitrate removal were studied. When treating actual groundwater samples, the EDI system exhibited an excellent removal rate for all ions (>90%) under a low and constant cell voltage. The results confirmed that the EDI process is suitable for the continuous and highly efficacious removal and recovery of nitrate and hardness ions in ground water. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in wastewater is paramount due to increasingly stringent environmental regulations governing the discharge of pollutants. This study developed an advanced capacitive deionization-assisted electrocoagulation (CDEC) system, which is enhanced wastewater Cr(VI) removal using migrating electric-field assisted electrocoagulation with a capacitive electrode. The capacitive electrode was explicitly incorporated into this hybrid system to capitalize on its adsorption and desorption capabilities and concentrate and eliminate Cr(VI). The CDEC reduced Cr(VI) effluent to 0.05 mg L−1 at 1–20 mg L−1 influent, below the Cr(VI) discharge standard for municipal wastewater treatment plants. The CDEC is a promising approach for removing Cr(VI), requiring only 0.0042–0.086 kWh m−3 at 1–20 mg L−1 influent, 23.89–43.9 % less than the control when the CDEC and control achieved the same effluent. The CDEC incorporates capacitive adsorption electrodes (CAE) to facilitate electro-adsorption and electro-desorption phenomena during electrochemical treatment. This hybrid system has demonstrated excellent performance in high treatment efficiency, low sacrificial anode consumption, and low energy consumption. The CDEC can attain high Cr(VI) removal efficiencies through this synchronized electro-adsorption and desorption mechanism. The Cr(VI) removal mechanism of CDEC was found to involve four pathways: 1) Cr(VI) reduction to Cr(III) at the cathode; 2) Fe2+ produced at sacrificial anode slide reduces Cr(VI); 3) complexation of hydroxide precipitation with Cr(VI); 4) adsorption onto the CAE. This work provides an innovative and efficient approach for advanced Cr(VI) removal from wastewater via capacitive deionization with electrocoagulation.
Effective electrosorption and recovery of phosphorus by capacitive deionization with a covalent organic framework-membrane coating electrode

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) holds great promise for phosphorus adsorption and recovery from wastewater, while current electrodes exhibit poor salt adsorption capacity (SAC) and selectivity due to co-ion effect and interference of co-existed ions with high concentration. Herein, to overcome these issues, a facile route was proposed to prepare a covalent organic framework-membrane coating electrode (COF-MCE) by depositing polyvinyl alcohol/polyethyleneimine membrane onto activated carbon fiber (ACF) followed by the in-situ growth of COF-LZU1. Compared to ACF and MCE, COF-MCE, with abundant functional groups and specific sites, facilitated electrical double layer (EDL)-based adsorption and induced hydrogen-bond interaction with phosphorus, contributing to a higher SAC of phosphorus (10.5 mg/g) in treating 1 mM NaH2PO4. When treating different mixtures of NaH2PO4/NaCl, NaH2PO4/NaNO3, and NaH2PO4/Na2SO4 with molar ratio of 1:5, COF-MCE exhibited the high phosphorus selectivity of 3.62, 5.98 and 7.01, respectively, which was attributed to the synergistic effects of EDL-based adsorption, hydrogen-bond and pseudocapacitance. Desorption experiments revealed that high reversal voltage and alkaline condition can weaken the hydrogen-bond interaction and strengthen the electrostatic repulsion between COF-MCE and phosphorus, thus improving the desorption and recovery of phosphorus. These findings confirmed the high potential of COF-MCE in the effective electrosorption and recovery of phosphorus from wastewater.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) is a promising electrochemical technique for the removal and recycling of ions from micro-polluted wastewater but is still hindered by the co-ion expulsion effect and anode oxidation . In this study, these issues are addressed through optimization of both materials and electrochemical systems. A diverse set of porous carbons are prepared using biomass as a precursor and KOH as the activation agent. It is found that direct carbonization and/or KOH activation induce a negative surface charge, whereas intense nitrogen-doping results in an inverse surface charge for all biomass-derived carbons, characterized by the potential of zero charge ( E pzc ). Density functional theory calculations suggest that the carboxyl group and quaternary N contribute most among other functional groups to the negative and positive charges, respectively. A E pzc -matching asymmetric CDI system is constructed employing negatively charged and positively charged carbons as the cathode and anode, respectively. This configuration, coupled with precise optimization of the cathode-to-anode mass ratio ( m - / m + ), unlocks a high adsorption capacity of 17.2 mg g −1 for NaCl, surpassing the symmetric system by 84.7 %. Further fine tuning of the m - / m + ratio results in a removal capacity of 167.4 mg g −1 for Cu 2+ ions, which is the highest reported for carbonaceous materials to date.

The resulting enhancement of NH4+ diffusion to the electrode chamber contributed to the improved performance of FCDI under both constant current (CC) and constant voltage (CV) conditions. The addition of CB to the FE suspension increased the conductivity and facilitated Na-zeolite charging for NH4+ electrosorption, especially in CV mode. NH4+-rich zeolite can be easily separated by sedimentation from CB in the FE suspension, producing a soil conditioner with a high N-fertilizer content suitable for soil improvement and agricultural applications. Overall, our study demonstrates that the novel Na-zeolite-based FCDI can be developed as an effective wastewater treatment technology for both NH4+ removal and recovery as a valuable fertilizer resource.

Abstract:To separate and concentrate NH4+ and PO43– from the synthetic wastewater to the concentrated solution through a novel electrochemical reactor with circulated anode and cathode using the difference of the concentration between electrode chamber and middle chamber.In recent years, the research on electrochemical processes have been focused on phosphate and ammonium removal and recovery. Among the wide range of possibilities with regards to electrochemical processes, capacitive deionization (CDI) saves the most energy while at the same time does not have continuity and selectivity. In this study, a new electrochemical reactor with electrolyte cyclic flowing in the electrode chambers was constructed to separate and concentrate phosphate and ammonium continuously and selectively from wastewater, based on the principle of CDI. At the concentration ratio of NaCl solution between the electrode chambers and the middle chamber (r) of 25 to 1, phosphate and ammonium in concentration level of domestic wastewater can be removed and recovered continuously and selectively as struvite. Long-term operation also indicated the ability to continuously repeat the reaction and verified sustained stability. Further, the selective recovery at the certain r could also be available to similar technologies for recovering other kinds of substances.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization (CDI) technology differs from traditional demineralization technology. Its desalination effect is mainly dependent on the electrode material and the porous nanostructure which can enhance capacitive deionization performance. Here, a low-cost and eco-friendly CDI technology has been developed to remove divalent ions from water. Using different activators such as KOH, ZnCl2 and K2C2O4 to reconstruct the biomass carbon skeleton, porous carbon material derived from walnut shells was used as symmetric electrodes. The maximum removal capacities in the CDI electrosorption were 17.1 mg/g for Mg2+, 11.99 mg/g for Ca2+, 18.56 mg/g for Pb2+ and 15.52 mg/g for Cd2+. The best effect on formation of micropores and construction of adsorption channels was observed using KOH as activator. The KOH-C had a specific surface area of 1600.34 m2/g and a cumulative pore volume of 0.3561 cm3/g, which provides favorable conditions for ion storage. These results demonstrate that KOH-activated carbon biomass can improve electrosorption performance and has potential as an advanced, inexpensive electrode material for capacitive deionization.

Abstract:Severe freshwater shortages and global pollution make selective removal of target ions from solutions of great significance for water purification and resource recovery. Capacitive deionization (CDI) removes charged ions and molecules from water by applying a low applied electric field across the electrodes and has received much attention due to its lower energy consumption and sustainability. Its application field has been expanding in the past few years. In this paper, we report an overview of the current status of selective ion removal in CDI. This paper also discusses the prospects of selective CDI, including desalination, water softening, heavy metal removal and recovery, nutrient removal, and other common ion removal techniques. The insights from this review will inform the implementation of CDI technology.

Abstract:The performance of capacitive deionization (CDI) mainly relies on the ion electrosorption capability. Here, we introduce a kind of free-standing, highly porous carbon nanofiber (CNF) networks with enhanced desalination capacity. The CNF networks were easily prepared by electrospinning of phenolic resin (PhR) precursor followed by one-step carbonization step. The as-obtained PhR-based CNF networks exhibited characteristics of high flexibility, conductivity and specific surface area (SSA) along with favorable porosity, and hence demonstrated enhanced desalination capacity. When used as CDI electrodes, the PhR-based CNF networks have demonstrated a desalination capacity of 50.1mgg−1 toward 2000mgL−1 brackish water at 1.2V, much better than most reported data thus far. More importantly, easy recovery and good reproducibility could be obtained for such electrodes. Therefore, construction of PhR-based CNF network electrodes offers remarkable opportunities for improving CDI capabilities and reliability given its simplicity, easy operation, and high performance.

Abstract:Capacitive deionization technology possesses puissant competitiveness in the field of water treatment due to its low cost and high efficiency. In this study, polyaniline (PANI) doped and carboxyl intercalated metal hydroxide composite (ZnFe-PANI/CNT) was developed by a simple co-precipitation method, and used as anode electrode for phosphate removal in sewage. The results show that ZnFe-PANI/CNT electrode can efficiently remove phosphate at concentration of 2–10 mg/L at a wide range of pH (3–10) by electric double layer capacitive adsorption and pseudocapacitive adsorption. The concentration of phosphate in the effluent was as low as 0.095 mg/L, and the coexisting anions (Cl − , NO 3 − , SO 4 2− and HCO 3 − ) hardly inhibited the phosphate adsorption by ZnFe-PANI/CNT composite electrode. In addition, under the optimal phosphate adsorption conditions (pH = 7 and applied voltage of 1.2 V), the energy consumption of CDI system was calculated as low as 0.00274 kWh/g P and 0.017 kWh/m 3 water, realizing the expectation of low cost and high efficiency operation.

Abstract:The protection and regeneration of the water environment is currently one of the most critical concerns for the sustainable development of human society. To solve the water crisis, the use of capacitive deionization (CDI) technology to extract fresh-water that is suitable for human consumption from abundant surface-water is a feasible solution. In this work, a cobalt benzimidazole frameworks (ZIF-9) derived carbon composites with a unique quasi-microcubic morphology is synthesized and used the as-prepared materials as an electrode material for the CDI. Interestingly, the ZIF-9 derived carbon composites exhibit an impressive desalination capacity of 55.4 mg g<sup>-1</sup> and can be reused. Measurements in surface-water (Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Slender West Lake, Initial rainwater, Rain water) show that this CDI technology based on ZIF-9 derived carbon composites not only has a strong adsorption effect on metal ions but also can remarkably kill microorganisms. The results show that the technology can effectively kill bacteria (Escherichia coli and Bacillus) and algae with 95% and 91.7% inhibition rates, respectively. This work provides a valuable example for the use of metal-organic framework-derived carbon composites as high-performance electrode materials of CDI and opens a new direction for promoting the application of CDI in surface-water.

Capacitive deionization, a potential water treatment technique based on electrochemistry, has gained huge recognition in the last decade owing to the facile ions' expulsion from sewage water, along with the benefits of being eco-friendly, reduced cost, decreased consumption of energy, and effortless renewal of electrode. Similarly, electrosorption emerged as a replacement technique to traditional adsorption techniques because of the generation of compound electrodes with flexible surface features, porous in nature, certainty, and the capability to execute electrochemical reactions. Extensive advancement has been witnessed in both capacitive deionization and electrosorption with their various electrodes. The scientific developments are assisted with distinct applications of these techniques. Thus, the current review paper has provided an elaborate description of the capacitive deionization and electrosorption methods with various electrode materials, highlighting polymer, membrane, and bio electrodes. The review paper has also delivered detailed explanations for the treatment of waste water which includes desalination, and expulsion of heavy metals and organic compounds, individually for capacitive deionization and electrosorption techniques. This review paper would be of great benefit in nurturing these technologies to evolve into a challenging alternative to get along with other water treatment problems.

Abstract:Phosphorus (P) is not only one of the main contaminants in wastewater but also an essential nutrient for all living organisms. In this study, we demonstrate a highly efficient and selective process for extraction of P from wastewater in the form of solid vivianite using a strategically operated four-chamber flow electrode capacitive deionization (FC-FCDI). The separated diluate and concentrate chambers in FC-FCDI enables continuous production of dephosphorylated water and P-rich brine, realizing P removal rate (0.22 μmol/(cm2·min)) and enrichment efficiency (concentration factor of 17.2) much higher than previous studies. The spontaneously enriched competing ions in the concentrate mitigate their further migration due to concentration countering effect, realizing to date the highest selectivity for P over SO4 2− (4.4) in CDI systems. Most importantly, the precipitated vivianite has high P content (12.4 %) and much smaller volume compared with the P-recovered solution in previous studies. The recovery of P in the solid state prevents the production of brine wastes, requires no water input for concentrate replenishment, and is conducive to transport, storage, and direct usage for various purposes. This work suggests a novel method for highly selective and efficient extraction of P from wastewater using tailor-designed and strategically-operated FC-FCDIs.
