Abstract:Through the empirical electron theory of solids and molecules (EET), the valence electron structure of Mg-Al alloy melt was analyzed. Based on the analysis, the basic structure model was established and the melt structural information was obtained. By analyzing the irreversible phenomenon of viscosity-temperature relationship curve V(t) of magnesium alloy melt in the temperature interval of ascent and descent, the irreversible change of the melt structural information would be judged indirectly. The results show that the number difference of covalent electron pair nα of each bond between atoms is the ultimate reason of the different melt structural information, which induces micro-inhomogeneity in alloy melt directly; at near 730 °C, Al-Mg||| (C) bonds in the atomic clusters with relatively stable structure begin to break. At this time, the melt structure achieves a new equilibratory and relatively homogeneous state. Disappearance of micro-nonequilibrium structure inherited from solidified structure, breakage of Al-Mg||| (·C) bonds in the atomic clusters and irreversible rearrangement of atoms are the essential reason of irreversible change of curve V(t). It is very important for further understanding the melt structural information of magnesium alloy and exploring solidification micro-mechanics.
Phase Field Simulation of Liquid-Solid-eutectoid Multiple Phase Transformations of a Fe-C Binary Alloy

Abstract:A new continuous multi-phase transformation field model was established for liquid-solid-eutectoid transformation. Taking Fe-C alloy as an example, the model was used to simulate the evolution of the micro-morphology of the liquid-solid phase transition, and the effects of temperature, solute and free energy on the nucleation of pearlite after the liquid-solid phase transition were analyzed. The micro-morphology of pearlite was simulated. The simulation results show that the austenite structure has hereditary effect on the pearlite, the morphology of pearlite structure was similar to that of the parent austenite. The eutectoid structure at the front of pearlite grows toward the interior of austenite grains in a bifurcation manner and in the spherical coronal shape. In addition, the growth rate of pearlite was related to the shape of concave-convex interface at the nucleation site, and the growth rate at the convex interface was faster than that at the concave interface.

Abstract:Eutectic Al-Si alloys tubes were prepared by soft-contact electromagnetic continuous casting. The effects of electromagnetic field on solidification structure were studied. Compared with traditional continuous casting, the morphology of primary alpha-Al phase changed from coarse column grains to thin equaixsed grains, and the silicon phase with the morphology of primary silicon phase appeared in the solidification microstructure. With increasing the electronic power, the quantity of the primary silicon was reduced, and the size of the primary silicon decreased. The shape of the primary silicon was sphericity.

Abstract:Abstract Different undercooling degrees of Cu55Ni45 alloy were obtained by the combination of molten glass purification and cyclic superheating, and the maximum undercooling degree reached 284 K. The microstructure of the alloy was observed by metallographic microscope, and the evolution of microstructure was studied systematically. There are two occasions of grain refinement in the solidification structure of the alloy: one occurs in the case of low undercooling, and the other occurs in the case of high undercooling. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technology was used to analyze the rapid solidification structure under high undercooling. The features of flat polygonal grain boundary, high proportion of twin boundary, and large proportion of large angle grain boundary indicate recrystallization. The change in microhardness of the alloy under different undercooling degrees was studied by microhardness tester. It was found that the average microhardness decreased sharply at high undercooling degrees, which further confirmed the recrystallization of the solidified structure at high undercooling degrees.

Abstract:The non-equilibrium solidification behaviors of undercooled Ni81P19 eutectic melts have been analyzed with respect to microstructure formation and transition during fluxing process of undercooled melts. A series of microstructure transitions far from equilibrium are found with increasing undercooling of the melt. Transitions from regular (rod) to anomalous eutectic to cellular eutectic regions are revealed beyond a critical undercooling. In order to explain formation and growth of anomalous eutectic, a model has been proposed which describes remelting of the primarily formed eutectics phase with dendrite characteristic due to instability of the dendrite morphology. The solid/liquid interfacial energy has been discussed to demonstrate formation of thin cellular eutectic regions if the udercooling passes certain higher critical undercooling.

Abstract:The Fe–Al–Ta eutectic alloy can be formed by eutectic reaction in order to improve the performance of Fe–Al intermetallic compounds, and thus it is important to further clarify the crystal growth mechanism of the Fe–Al–Ta eutectic alloy during solidification. Thus, the melting and solidification temperatures of the Fe–Al–Ta eutectic alloy were determined by differential scanning calorimetry, and the melting and solidification processes of the Fe–Al–Ta eutectic alloy were observed in situ by high-temperature confocal scanning laser microscopy. In addition, the solidified structure of the Fe–Al–Ta eutectic alloy was observed and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. No other types of phase transitions were found in the Fe–Al–Ta eutectic alloy when the temperature was below 1600 °C. The reinforced phase exhibited a certain orientation after solidification, and the microstructure at the center of the eutectic cell was much more regular than that at the grain boundary. The effect of the cooling rate on the microstructure morphology and the formation mechanism of the irregular divorced eutectic were analyzed.

Abstract:The present contribution will focus on recent advanced transmission electron microscopy studies of Ni-Ti based alloys with the emphasis on features related to the martensitic transformation. The examples range from the atomic scale when looking at the atomic structure of a precipitate to the micron scale when looking at the configuration of these precipitates or to twin configurations in particular ternary alloys. An example of the first is the refinement of the atomic structure of a Ni4Ti3 precipitate formed in Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloys to enhance the shape memory behaviour. A slice-and-view study to obtain the 3D configuration of these precipitates is an example of the latter. Some other examples will be discussed as well.

Abstract:The study of liquid metal oxidation is of particular importance since some liquid metals are highly reactive with oxygen even under ultrahigh vacuum. The investigation of the oxidation behavior of liquid aluminum is strongly demanded due to its wide applications but relatively low melting point. However, it is still ambiguous about the products at the initial oxidation stage of liquid aluminum through the researches done in the past several decades. In order to investigate the initial oxidation products together with the oxidation mechanism of liquid aluminum, in-situ oxidation of nano aluminum powder was carried out at 720 degrees C in the environmental TEM (E-TEM). Prior to the oxidation, the nano aluminum powder was visualized and analyzed by E-TEM and DTA respectively. The results show that there is an amorphous Al2O3 film of 5-6 nm thick on the surface of the aluminum powder, which transforms to gamma-Al2O3 at a temperature range of 350-550 degrees C. By melting the nano powder to liquid followed by cooling under a total pressure of 10(-4) Pa in E-TEM, oxide-free solid aluminum is obtained. Re-melting of the solid aluminum at 720 degrees C yields oxide-free liquid aluminum. After oxidation of the oxide-free liquid aluminum under an oxygen partial pressure of 10(-2) Pa in E-TEM, alpha-Al2O3 nano wires appear on the liquid aluminum surface, demonstrating that the initial oxidation product of liquid aluminum is alpha-Al2O3. Moreover, the oxidation of liquid aluminum prepared from oxide-free bulk aluminum at 720 degrees C under an oxygen partial pressure of 10(-2) Pa was also studied. The XRD analysis of the products confirms that the oxide is constituted of single alpha-Al2O3. Additionally, this particular oxidation result of liquid aluminum is attributed to its liquid structure and vapor oxidation process.

Abstract:Abstract The solidification structure of Ti-6Al-4V round ingot during the electron beam cold hearth melting (EBCHM) directly determines the quality of the ingot and the performance of the subsequent rolled coil. In this paper, the Cellular Automaton Finite Element (CAFE) method is used to numerically simulate the solidification structure of Ti-6Al-4V ingot. Firstly, the mathematical model is established with a numerical solution. Secondly, effects of process parameters including the pouring temperature and pulling speed on the solidification structure are revealed. The results show that the microstructures predicted by the numerical method match the experimental results. For the case of fixed pulling speed, a reduction in the pouring temperature leads to the grain refinement and the decreased volatilization of Al. With an increase of the pulling speed, the number of grains first increases and then decreases, but the average grain size first decreases and then increases. Furthermore, the maximum grain size monotonically increases with increasing the pulling speed. Thus, the fine solidified structure with fine grains can be obtained at the pouring temperature of 1700 °C and the pulling speed of 4 × 10 −4 m s −1 .

Abstract:Abstract Electron work function (EWF) has demonstrated its great promise in materials analysis and design, particularly for single-phase materials, e.g., solute selection for optimal solid-solution strengthening. Such promise is attributed to the correlation of EWF with the atomic bonding and stability, which largely determines material properties. However, engineering materials generally consist of multiple phases. Whether or not the overall EWF of a complex multi-phase material can reflect its properties is unclear. Through investigation on the relationships among EWF, microstructure, mechanical and electrochemical properties of low-carbon steel samples with two-level microstructural inhomogeneity, we demonstrate that the overall EWF does carry the information on integrated electron behavior and overall properties of multiphase alloys. This study makes it achievable to develop “electronic metallurgy”—an electronic based novel alternative methodology for materials design.

Abstract:Abstract High-entropy alloy with multi-principal elements is a novel design concept for the field of alloy, which breaks through the traditional alloy development frame based on “one or two major alloy elements”. High entropy alloy composed of different metallic elements (generally ≥ 5) can present different novel properties by changing mole ratios or elements. In this work, the valence electron structure of high entropy alloys with compositions near Nb 25 Mo 25 Ta 25 W 25 and V 20 Nb 20 Mo 20 Ta 20 W 20 was studied using the Empirical Electron Theory of Solid and Molecules (EET). The predicted results agree well with the experimental data. Results shows that EET can be used to forecast the HEAs’ properties and design the constituent of HEAs.

Abstract:Dual-wire-fed electron beam directed energy deposition (EB-DED) is a highly efficient technique for additive manufacturing (AM) of TiAl alloys, but research into the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties within the melt pool is limited. Experimental and numerical simulations are used together to study the evolution along the vertical direction within the TiAl alloy melt pool. The chemical composition, microstructure and microhardness in the top region (TR), middle region (MR) and bottom region (BR) within the melt pool were characterised and comparatively analysed. The results showed that the Al content decreased from 52 at. % to 49 at. % from the top to the bottom, the grain size increased and then decreased, and the grain aspect ratio increased from 1 to over 3. The decreasing size factor and increasing shape factor result in variations in grain size and shape. The improvement in microhardness from 226 HV 0.5 to 280 HV 0.5 was quantitatively analysed as being mainly due to the reduction in Al content. The results of this study are of paramount importance in facilitating the use of the dual-wire-fed EB-DED technique for the production of high performance TiAl alloy components.

Abstract:The effects of static electric fields applied on the directional solidification of Al–Cu eutectic alloy are studied. The eutectic morphology and lamellar structure are observed in three experimental conditions, both with positive and negative electric fields. The experimental results show that positive and negative electric fields increase the lamellar spacing and the number of laminates. Electric fields increase the grain size but decrease the volume fraction. The analysis shows that the electric fields accelerate atom diffusion in liquid, which increases the lamellar spacing and grain size. The experimental results show that the electric fields have similar effect on the surface and inner surface of the specimen.

Abstract:The current work proposes a simple approach of using empirical formulas and existing thermodynamic data to discover eutectic high‐entropy alloys for rapid solidification processes, such as metal additive manufacturing. The exemplarily devised material containing face‐center‐cubic and Laves phases demonstrates high hardness in its as‐built state. Excellent castability, significantly refined microstructure, and good mechanical properties make eutectic high‐entropy alloys (EHEAs) a natural fit for rapid solidification processes, e.g., additive manufacturing. Previous investigations have focused on developing EHEAs through trial and error and mixing known binary eutectic materials. However, eutectic compositions obtained from near‐equilibrium conditions do not guarantee a fully eutectic microstructure under rapid solidifications. In this work, a thermodynamically guided high‐throughput framework is proposed to design EHEAs for rapid solidification. Empirical formulas derived from past experimental observations and thermodynamic computations are applied and considered phase growth kinetics under rapid solidification (skewed phase diagram). The designed alloy candidate, Co25.6Fe17.9Ni22.4Cr19.1Ta8.9Al6.1 (wt.%), contains nanostructured eutectic lamellar and shows a high Vickers hardness of 675 Hv. In addition to this specific composition, the alloy design toolbox enables the development of new EHEAs for rapid solidification without the limitation of previous knowledge.

Abstract:Electron beam cold hearth melting (EBCHM) is a promising technique for achieving premium titanium alloys for critical rotating parts of the aero-engine and to recycle the titanium scraps. This paper studied the heat transfer, the fluid flow and solidification in the cold hearth during EBCHM process of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The results show that the melt is constrained to a very shallow depth which is 15 mm in our experiment and the melt velocity is about a few centimeters per second. The melt temperature increases with the increase of melting power and decreases with the increase of melting rate. The melt depth increases with the increase of melting power, while the effect of melting rate on the shape of melt pool is not obvious. The trajectories of inclusions with different densities and sizes were simulated. The density has great influence on the trajectories of particles. The evaporation model was established to study the influence of melting parameters on the ingot composition. The results indicate that melting temperature, melting rate and composition of row materials have great influence on the ingot composition. Round ingots were produced by the commercial EBCHM furnace in the factory. The morphology of the shell was investigated and the ingot composition was tested. The calculating results are in good agreement with experiment.

Abstract:Hypoeutectic Al-Si alloys tubes were prepared by centrifugal casting under an electromagnetic field (EMF). The effects of electromagnetic field on solidification microstructure were studied. Compared with traditional centrifugal casting, the grain size and aspect ratio of primary alpha-Al decreased greatly, the columnar dendrites became equiaxed gradually with increasing electromagnetic intensity, the inter-flake space of eutectic laminas in the center of the sample increased and the broken eutectic silicon particles were found in the eutectic laminas.

Abstract:The present manuscript investigates the yield-strength dependence on the microstructural length scale and solidification rate variation, in an intermetallic-based, high-strength Ni 3 Al + Ni 5 Zr eutectic alloy. Imposed solidification rates were varied by casting the alloy into molds of different diameter which resulted in a microstructure consisting of two different morphologies (lamellar and non-lamellar eutectic). The consequent change in solidification conditions translated into various microstructural length scale changes, such as colony width, morphology width, morphology fraction, lamellar width, etc. The bulk mechanical properties were estimated and compared as a function of this change. Consequently, this study alludes toward the potential of achieving higher strengths in such microstructures by lowering the fraction of non-lamellar eutectic morphology, which can be achieved by imposing even faster solidification rates on the solidifying melt. This observation, combined with easy castability of this alloy, make it an attractive candidate for fusion-based additive manufacturing processes, where different cross sections of complex geometries often experience very high solidification rates.

Abstract:The microstructure and phase transformation during annealing of rapidly solidified Al-Fe-Ti-C alloy have been studied by TEM,EDS and EELS.The initial microstructure consists mostly of α-Al,Al_6Fe particles and a smaller volume fraction of an amorphous phase.During annealing,the amorphous phase transforms into α_T-AlFeSi phase,the globular particles of Al_6Fe growth up and some needle-like Al_3Fe phase precipitates near the α-Al grain boundaries.At 673 K,96 h and 773 K,5 h annealing,the Ti and C dissolved in the α-Al during rapid solidification precipitates as a compound phase of TiC_079.And the formation process of TiC phase was discussed.

Abstract:Effects of electropulsing treatment (EPT) on the microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and crack healing of intermetallic Al3Ti alloys were studied in this work. In order to investigate the athermal effect caused by EPT, conventional heat treatment (CHT) was conducted for comparison. The compressive stress-strain curves demonstrated that the failure strains of Al3Ti alloy increase under both the EPT and CHT conditions, while the increment of failure strain of Al3Ti alloy treated by EPT is higher than that treated by CHT. Fracture surface analysis confirmed that the intrinsic brittle fracture of Al3Ti alloy evolves into the quasi-cleavage fracture with increasing frequency of EPT. Based on the systematic investigation into the microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and fracture surface observation, the influence mechanism of EPT on Al3Ti alloy was found to be related to the improvements of atomic diffusion and dislocation movement, which results from the coupling of thermal effect and athermal effect by EPT. Furthermore, the thermal compressive stress and athermal effect could heal the local micro-crack and decrease the crack width of Al3Ti alloy by EPT. Therefore, EPT can work as a novel method for improving the plastic deformation capacity of Al3Ti alloy.
