Abstract:Structural optimization can lead to efficient designs for high-rise concrete buildings. However, the high computational cost of the structural analysis step hinders its application in practical cases. With regards to this problem, a novel hybrid optimization framework is developed in this study. Discrete variables, code-stipulated constraints and other construction requirements under multiple loading scenarios are considered. The hybrid optimization framework contains two steps: in the first step, a computationally efficient approximation of the optimization formulation is constructed using a combined response surface methodology (RSM). Combining all the design constraints, three sub-optimization problems are proposed based on the relaxation model of the original problem to update the response surface model in the near-optimum region. When the response surface model has sufficient accuracy in the near-optimum region, in the second step, a discrete Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique is applied to search for the optimal solution utilizing the response surface model. By integrating the commercially available ETABS, a dedicated optimization software with an independent interface is developed and details for practical software development are included in this paper. Three examples of high-rise concrete building design are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed optimization framework, and the results are compared to those of a general PSO algorithm. It is shown that, compared to the conventional design approach, a 14.3% reduction in material usage is achieved by the hybrid optimization framework. Additionally, the proposed framework significantly improves the computational efficiency compared to PSO. This methodology can therefore be used by engineers to optimize member sizes for high-rise buildings so that stable and sustainable designs can be achieved.

Abstract:It has always been the goal of structural engineers to construct safe and stable buildings using the least amount of materials. Utilizing a quick and effective way to optimize the cross-section size is crucial because conventional building design methods are impacted by the designers' knowledge, and it is challenging to prevent material waste. Due to its implicit optimization function, discrete design variables, and expensive individual evaluation, sizing optimization of high-rise buildings is very challenging to achieve. In order to effectively handle this optimization problem, a two-stage discrete sizing optimization method for high-rise buildings based on the DIviding RECTangles (DIRECT) algorithm and local response surface is proposed in this paper. The optimization method suggested in this research consists of two key stages: the global search stage and the local search stage. In the global search stage, the entire design domain is divided using a modified DIRECT algorithm to swiftly identify potentially optimal subregions that may contain the best points. In the local search stage, the local response surface model is constructed to approximate the objective and constraint functions using the sampling points from the previous stage, and the discrete optimal solution is rapidly found through mathematical iterative solving. A sizing optimization calculation program for high-rise buildings was developed in Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 on the basis of C++ to achieve automatic optimization. The new method was applied to optimize three high-rise steel frame buildings with different heights and plan shapes. The results showed that the material cost could be successfully saved compared with the conventional design, and the over-limit constraints could be adjusted automatically, which demonstrated the viability and efficacy of the two-stage optimization method.

Abstract:There are some aspects that need to be improved in design of crane runway girders in GB 50017—2017, for example, 1) the bearing stress at the web edge is 15％ and 24％ smaller than FEM results; 2) the strength reduction factor accounting for the lateral-torsional buckling is 10％～25％ greater than available test results in the international literature. This paper reveals another problem that exists in current design method of crane runway girders: the strength reduction factor is based on an about 15％ larger and unreachable bending moment. This paper proposed a new strength reduction factor for mono-symmetrical beams, which is based on the bending moment for which the tensile region has a certain depth of plastic strain and the compressed edge is just yielding, this bending moment is smaller than the commonly used elastic limiting moment based on the sectional modulus of the compressed edge, so as to make the calculation result more reasonable.
Wind-resistant safety analysis of light-weight steel portal frame structures

Abstract:In order to investigate the wind-resistant safety conditions of light-weight steel portal frame structures, the wind pressures on the surface of a light-weight steel industrial building located at the southeast coastal area of China were measured by means of the wind-tunnel test technique. The wind loads under two most unfavorable wind directions obtained from the measured data and the loads determined from the load code for building structures and the technical specification for steel gable frame structures were applied to the unfavorable frame of the building. The nonlinear load-capacity analyses were then performed using the refined plate/shell element based finite element method, and the wind-resistant safety factors and ultimate-state failure modes of the frame were thereafter found. Analysis and comparison of the obtained wind-resistant safety factors under different load cases, indicate that the degrees of safety redundancy of the frame in consideration under the wind load determined from the steel gable frame specification and the extreme wind load from the wind tunnel test are relatively low, and the wind resistant design in accordance with the load code wind loading (no gust factor included) would probably lead the frame to an unsafe condition. A simple and effective beam-column connection enhancement measure is proposed thereafter, by which the safety level of the frame could be considerably improved and the sensibility to initial imperfections could be reduced.

Abstract:With the application of lightweight enclosure materials in the steel structure workshops,the solid-web type portal frame is used in metallurgical workshop, instead of the traditional latticed structure,but the current design method only bases on the code for design of steel structure and the experience.In order to control the steel consumption and ensure the safety,an optimal design method for the portal frame of ordinary steel structure workshop is proposed,according to the contrastive analysis on current related codes and the engineering experience.One project case shows the advantages of this method,and this method provides a basis for the project design of the same type.

Abstract:Bridge crane is one of the most widely used cranes in our country, which is indispensable equipment for material conveying in the modern production. In this paper, the framework of multidisciplinary optimization for bridge crane is proposed. The presented research on crane multidisciplinary design technology for energy saving includes three levels, respectively: metal structures level, transmission design level, and electrical system design level. The shape optimal mathematical model of the crane is established for shape optimization design of metal structure level as well as size optimal mathematical model and topology optimal mathematical model of crane for topology optimization design of metal structure level is established. Finally, system-level multidisciplinary energy-saving optimization design of bridge crane is further carried out with energy-saving transmission design results feedback to energy-saving optimization design of metal structure. The optimization results show that structural optimization design can reduce total mass of crane greatly by using the finite element analysis and multidisciplinary optimization technology premised on the design requirements of cranes such as stiffness and strength; thus, energy-saving design can be achieved.

Optimal design for lightweight of structure of quayside container crane

Abstract:Quayside container crane is a kind of huge port machinery, and its cost dominantly depends on the weight of steel as main material of crane. Optimization procedure for lightweight is the critical technology for designing crane. The parametric dynamic model of the crane is established by finite element method first, whose stresses and deformation are analyzed after applying corresponding loads and constraints. The stresses and deformation of the dangerous elements of the metal structure can be picked up. Based on the constraint conditions of strength, stiffness and the first-order natural frequency, an optimal lightweight design for the crane is found out. The weight of the crane is reduced by 5.75%, in which all critical requirements according to specification can be satisfied and the distribution of stress and mass is more reasonable. Moreover, the fatigue life of the girders is verified to agree to the specification of the crane.
Optimal design of long span steel-concrete composite floor system

Abstract:An optimal design problem of long span steel-concrete composite floor system was investigated based on important parameters to aim at the economical and applicable conditions and optimizing orientations of long span steel-concrete composite floor. The objective function was set as economical equivalent steel consumption, and the variables contained eight parameters including dimensions of the steel section, intermediate distance between steel sections and thickness of concrete slab. The objective function was constrained to the plastic theory, standards and construction experience. The generalized reduced gradient method (GRG) was used to generate optimal sections with minimum economical equivalent steel consumption under different spans and live loads. According to the optimization results, the composite floor within a span of 60 m and a variable load of 6 kN/m2 could efficiently facilitate the composite effect of composite structure and has good economic benefits. As for super-long span composite floor when the traditional I-section floor system is not economically suitable, the composite floor with corrugated web is recommended for improving the bearing efficiency of steel web. A new cable-supported composite floor system was proposed based on the cable-supported beam for its high efficiency in mechanism.
Effect of Shear Deformation in Latticed Columns on Buckling of Heavily Loaded Industrial Portal Frames

Abstract:The effect of shear deformation on the buckling of portal frames is analyzed in this paper,and theoretical development is presented to determine the effective length factors of shear-deformable columns. Through detailed analysis of a real industrial portal frame, the results of the currently used reduced inertia moment method and the accurate analysis are compared. It is found that the error of the currently used method is not negligible, especially for the upper columns. This study shows the necessity of taking different reduction factors for different laced columns. The derivation of the formula for the reduction factor derived from the equivalent slenderness factor is verified in this paper, and the suggestion of the necessity of carrying a more accurate analysis in design is proposed.

Abstract:As special equipment for material hoisting and carrying, the double-trolley overhead traveling crane develops rapidly in the field of mechanical engineering. In order to improve the safety, reliability, and economy, the lightweight design for the crane is crucial, which mainly contains two important fundamental works: one is the prediction of the limit load-bearing ability and the other one is the optimization. In this paper, a three-dimensional parametric finite element model is established and the limit load-bearing ability of the main girder of a true crane is predicted using the arc-length algorithm and nonlinear stabilization algorithm, respectively. Finite element analysis indicates the existing double-trolley overhead traveling crane shows a large strength allowance. The subsequent optimal design which aims to achieve a perfect match between the mechanical performance and weight is conducted based on the strength analysis. Specially, the software platform of optimal design for double-trolley overhead traveling crane is developed to reach the integrated parametric design interactively. The proposed numerical methods which are highlighted by an optimal design platform implement the lightweight design conception efficiently. By numerical analysis, this research is demonstrated to provide theoretical and technical support for promoting the lightweight design and safety evaluation of cranes.
AN OPTIMAL SCHEME FOR HOISTING LARGE-SCALE SLENDER REINFORCED CONCRETE COLUMNS

Abstract:To resolve the problem of hoisting large-scale slender reinforced concrete columns during the construction of power stations or industrial workshops, an optimal scheme to finish the whole erection of the columns is studied and the corresponding software is developed. Mathematical models for the internal forces of double-crane and double-rope system are established. The hoist point positions are selected as design variables for the optimal model. The objective of the analysis is to minimize the maximum internal force (bending moment) in the course of handling columns to the upright position. The constraints are imposed by the penalty strategy. By grid method and genetic algorithm, the optimal problem is resolved. In addition, the best rope system is determined by comparing the computational results of initial rope systems under respective best hoist points. A practical example is presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the technique. Results show that the peak of maximum moment is decreased by about 30% after reasonably choosing the rope system, pickup point arrangement and rope element length.

Abstract:<p>Large span portal-rigid frames with tapered sections in low-rise metal building system are often used in industrial and commercial buildings. The drift of such portal-rigid frames induced by the wind load needs to be smaller than a prescribed limit, and at the same time the frames should be as light as possible for cost-effectiveness. To this end, structural optimization of such portal-rigid frames subjected to the wind-induced drift constraint is required. However, little research for optimization of the large span portal-rigid frame with tapered sections has been reported. This paper proposed a procedure for structural optimization of such portal-rigid frames by adopting the Optimality Criteria (OC) method. Based on an aerodynamic database of the measured wind pressure from a wind tunnel test, several forms of the Equivalent Static Wind Load (ESWL) acting on a large-span portal-rigid frame were evaluated by the Gust Loading Factor (GLF), Load Response Correlation (LRC) and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) method. The method of virtual-work was utilized to construct the wind-induced drift or displacement. An effective iteration algorithm was derived for the minimum weight optimization of the frame while all wind-induced drift constraints were satisfied. The wind resistant structural optimization for the large-span rigid frame with taped section were conducted when it was bore by different forms of ESWL (GLF based, single objective and multiple objective ESWLs), and their optimized results were multi-compared in the form of the optimized total weight and the height of the optimized structural members. The effects of the connection stiffness at semi-rigid joints and the stiffness of support restraints on the optimized results are also investigated. Finally the global optimality property of the proposed OC method adopted for the optimized case in this paper was also discussed and verified. Optimized results show that the OC optimization procedure proposed in this paper is very effective for the optimization design of large-span portal-rigid steel frames with tapered sections under wind-induced drift constraints.</p>

Abstract:At present, there are some new research ideas in the design of luffing mechanism of portal crane, such as genetic algorithm and particle swarm optimization algorithm. The development of design software adopts Visual C++ or Visual Basic, MATLAB and other tools. These methods are advanced but inefficient because extra time and cost are required. This paper proposes a modern design method to complete the optimization of the four-bar luffing mechanism in the portal crane, which can simplify the calculation and improve the efficiency. The motion track description and mechanical properties of the four-bar luffing mechanism are obtained by the geometric analysis and the load analysis. The luffing curves, which can be re-drawn by modifying the initial parameters, are given to verify the optimized results. Results demonstrate that the modern design method can accomplish the optimal design effectively without extra time and cost, and this finding will be provided as the design guidance for the luffing mechanism.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, Ahead of Print. In order to achieve safe and economical design results for crane bridge structures, an optimization method with safety assessment constraints is proposed. In this approach, the limit state method is used to test the structure design. Safety assessment is conducted based on the fuzzy analytic network process, allowing the safety score of designs to be quantified. Aiming to minimize the self-weight of the bridge, the dimensions of critical sections are regarded as design variables and constraints related to the process size, strength, stiffness, stability, and safety score are imposed, utilizing the artificial hummingbird algorithm for the structure optimal design. After validating through an engineering example, the results demonstrated that under the settled safety constraints, the proposed optimization method successfully reduced the structural self-weight by 19.709%, while maintaining a safety score proximate to the original design. In comparison to optimization without safety assessment constraints, this method resulted in a 10.441% increase in weight, but its safety was significantly improved by 21.740%. This validates the effectiveness and practicality of incorporating safety assessment into structure optimization, thereby ensuring a balanced trade-off between safety and material economy in the design of crane bridge structures.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this study is to further investigate the potential benefits brought about by the development of modern technology in the steel construction industry. Specifically, the study focuses on the optimization of tapered members for pre-engineered steel structures, aligning with Eurocode 3 standards. By emphasizing the effectiveness of material utilization in construction, this research aims to enhance the structural performance and safety of buildings. Moreover, it recognizes the pivotal role played by such advancements in promoting economic growth through the reduction of material waste, optimization of cost-efficiency and support for sustainable construction practices. Design/methodology/approach Structural performance at initial analysis and final analysis of the selected critical frame were carried out using Dlubal RSTAB 8.18. The structural frame stability and sway imperfections were checked based on MS EN1993-1-1:2005 (EC3). To assess the structural stability of the portal frame using MS EN 1993-1-1:2005 (EC3), cross-sectional resistance and member buckling resistance were verified based on Clause 6.2.4 – Compression, Clause 6.2.5 – Bending Moment, Clause 6.2.6 – Shear, Clause 6.2.8 – Bending and Shear, Clause 6.2.9 – Bending and Axial Force and Clause 6.3.4 – General Method for Lateral and Lateral Torsional Buckling of Structural Components. Findings In this study, the cross sections of the web-tapered rafter and column were classified under Class 4. These involved the consideration of elastic shear resistance and effective area on the critical steel sections. The application of the General Method on the verification of the resistance to lateral and lateral torsional buckling for structural components required the extraction of some parameters using structural analysis software. From the results, there was only 5.90% of mass difference compared with the previous case study. Originality/value By classifying the web-tapered cross sections of the rafter and column under Class 4, the study accounts for important factors such as elastic shear resistance and effective area on critical steel sections.

Abstract:Mass optimization of crane box girder considering both ribs and diaphragms is a crucial aspect of crane structural design in mechanical engineering. However, two common challenges often obscure this process: the sizing of stiffeners such as diaphragms and ribs, and the selection of constraints on state variables related to stresses and deformations for various load cases. In response, this paper focuses on optimizing the dimensions, number, and placement of stiffeners, including ribs and diaphragms, in a two-girder overhead crane structure. The paper begins by establishing criteria for the initial height of the box girder through a comparative analysis of structural strength and stiffness. Subsequently, dimensional relationships between stiffeners and the girder section are built in accordance with the principles of local plate stability. Following this, the ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) program is coded and executed to optimize the crane mass using three methods: sub-problem approximation, sweep, and first-order methods via Module Design OPT for four chosen sets of state variables. A comparative analysis of the optimum crane mass, based on the rounded-up design variables, reveals that constraints on stresses and deformations from both vertical and transversal impact cases, as well as the vertical frequency from dynamic vibration cases, yield the best results. Furthermore, the proposed APDL method is compared and validated against Grey Wolf Optimizer, Whale Optimization Algorithm, Particle Swarm Optimization, and Genetic Algorithm. Finally, a parametric study is conducted using curves and tables to explore the influence of structural stiffness and material property on the optimized dimensions of the girder and stiffeners, as well as the overall mass and mechanical performance.

Abstract:Current structural design methods mostly emphasize the short-term structural behavior while neglect the long-term performance, social effects and environmental impacts. To address these problems, the Life-Cycle Design (LCD) method considering environmental impacts and structural deterioration could be adopted within the design process to ensure that the structural performance satisfies various objectives. Due to the complexity and the long lifespan of engineering structures, as well as the lack of standardized design approach, studies and application of LCD that cover all the design objectives are limited. This paper proposes a hierarchical LCD method for concrete structures by combining traditional design with green design and other engineering aspects. The design process is divided into six levels that cover the aspects of structural safety and reliability, durability, economic efficiency, local environment, social impacts, and global environment. The proposed design method is then applied to a reinforced concrete highway bridge in marine environment for the purpose of illustration, and a comprehensive comparison between traditional design and the hierarchical LCD approach is made within six design levels. A brief discussion on the hierarchical LCD framework and the future works is presented before conclusions are made.

Abstract:The main focus of this project study is to explore and compare the design and optimization of two types of industrial sheds: Pre-Engineering Building (PEB) with gantry girder work and the traditional truss-type steel shed with a gantry girder. PEB structures stand out for their efficiency and quick assembly due to pre-made components assembled on-site. Including a gantry girder in the design supports cranes for lifting heavy loads. On the other hand, the traditional steel shed design also features a gantry girder for crane support and is a staple in the construction sector. By analyzing these designs using STAAD-Pro software, we evaluate factors like strength, construction time, cost efficiency, and suitability for various industrial needs. Through this comparison, we aim to provide valuable insights for construction professionals to determine the most suitable shed design for their specific requirements, ensuring optimal performance and operational efficiency in industrial settings.
