Abstract:Zero-index materials exhibit exotic optical properties that can be utilized for integrated-optics applications. However, practical implementation requires compatibility with complementary metallic-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technologies. We demonstrate a CMOS-compatible zero-index metamaterial consisting of a square array of air holes in a 220-nm-thick silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer. This design supports zero-index modes with Dirac-cone dispersion. The metamaterial is entirely composed of silicon and offers compatibility through low-aspect-ratio structures that can be simply fabricated in a standard device layer. This platform enables mass adoption and exploration of zero-index-based photonic devices at low cost and high fidelity.

Abstract:Metamaterials with a refractive index of zero exhibit physical properties such as infinite phase velocity and wavelength. However, there is no way to implement these materials on a photonic chip, restricting the investigation and application of zero-index phenomena to simple shapes and small scales. We designed and fabricated an on-chip integrated metamaterial with a refractive index of zero in the optical regime. Light refracts perpendicular to the facets of a prism made of this metamaterial, directly demonstrating that the index of refraction is zero. The metamaterial consists of low-aspect-ratio silicon pillar arrays embedded in a polymer matrix and clad by gold films. This structure can be fabricated using standard planar processes over a large area in arbitrary shapes and can efficiently couple to photonic integrated circuits and other optical elements. This novel on-chip metamaterial platform opens the door to exploring the physics of zero index and its applications in integrated optics.

Abstract:We present small-footprint (approximate to lambda/2-wide) silicon-based waveguides with an effective index of zero at a wavelength near lambda = 1630nm. We characterize the refractive index using on-chip interferometry and measure the propagation loss to be 1.3 dB/mu m.

Abstract:Metamaterials with a Dirac-like cone dispersion at the center of the Brillouin zone behave like an isotropic and impedance-matched zero refractive index material at the Dirac-point frequency. Such metamaterials can be realized in the form of either bulk metamaterials with efficient coupling to free-space light or on-chip metamaterials that are efficiently coupled to integrated photonic circuits. These materials enable the interactions of a spatially uniform electromagnetic mode with matter over a large area in arbitrary shapes. This unique optical property paves the way for many applications, including arbitrarily shaped high-transmission waveguides, nonlinear enhancement, and phase mismatch-free nonlinear signal generation, and collective emission of many emitters. This review summarizes the Dirac-like cone-based zero-index metamaterials’ fundamental physics, design, experimental realizations, and potential applications.

Abstract:Zero-index metamaterials (ZIMs) offer unprecedented ways to manipulate the flow of light, and are of interest for wide range of applications including optical cloaking, super-coupling, and unconventional phase-matching properties in nonlinear optics. Impedance-matched ZIMs can be obtained through a photonic Dirac-cone (PDC) dispersion induced by an accidental degeneracy of an electric monopole and a transverse magnetic dipole mode at the center of the Brillouin zone. Therefore, PDC is very sensitive to fabrication imperfections. In this work, we propose and demonstrate fabrication-tolerant all-dielectric ZIM in telecom regime that supports near PDC dispersion over much wider parameter space than conventional designs. The prism device integrated with Si photonics is fabricated and measured for the verification.

Abstract:Metamaterials offer unprecedented flexibility for manipulating the optical properties of matter, including the ability to access negative index, ultra-high index and chiral optical properties. Recently, metamaterials with near-zero refractive index have drawn much attention. Light inside such materials experiences no spatial phase change and extremely large phase velocity, properties that can be applied for realizing directional emission, tunneling waveguides, large area single mode devices, and electromagnetic cloaks. However, at optical frequencies previously demonstrated zero- or negative-refractive index metamaterials require the use of metallic inclusions, leading to large ohmic loss, a serious impediment to device applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an impedance matched zero-index metamaterial at optical frequencies based on purely dielectric constituents. Formed from stacked silicon rod unit cells, the metamaterial possesses a nearly isotropic low-index response leading to angular selectivity of transmission and directive emission from quantum dots placed within the material.

Abstract:There has been strong interest in the confinement of electromagnetic energy in sub-diffraction limit waveguide configurations. Such an achievement would offer applications in in telecommunications, subwavelength imaging, optical memory storage, and on-chip photonic processes. Materials with a refractive index of zero have been considered as strong contenders for such “super-coupling” applications (Silveirinha MG, Engheta N, Phys Rev B 76:245109, 2007; Engheta N, Science 340:286–287, 2013). Abstract:In this article, a highly directive all-dielectric zero-index metamaterial (ZIM) based nanoantenna has been proposed which has the ability to directionally transmit the radiation from an isotropic quantum emitter. The zero-index metamaterial (ZIM) used here, is basically a rods-in-air type photonic crystal, which exhibits zero-index behaviour owing to the existence of a Dirac-cone at the Gamma (Γ) point in its photonic band structure. The emitter is embedded inside the ZIM and the radiation pattern can be controlled by varying the shape and size of the array.

Abstract:Light travels in a zero-index medium without accumulating a spatial phase, resulting in perfect spatial coherence. Such coherence brings several potential applications, including arbitrarily shaped waveguides, phase-mismatch-free nonlinear propagation, large-area single-mode lasers, and extended superradiance. A promising platform to achieve these applications is an integrated Dirac-cone material that features an impedance-matched zero index. Although an integrated Dirac-cone material eliminates ohmic losses via its purely dielectric structure, it still entails out-of-plane radiation loss, limiting its applications to a small scale. We design an ultra-low-loss integrated Dirac cone material by achieving destructive interference above and below the material. The material consists of a square array of low-aspect-ratio silicon pillars embedded in silicon dioxide, featuring easy fabrication using a standard planar process. This design paves the way for leveraging the perfect spatial coherence of large-area zero-index materials in linear, nonlinear, and quantum optics.

Abstract:Zero-index materials, characterized by near-zero permittivity and/or permeability, represent a distinctive class of materials that exhibit a range of novel physical phenomena and have potential for various advanced applications. However, conventional zero-index materials are often hindered by constraints such as narrow bandwidth and significant material loss at high frequencies. Here, we numerically demonstrate a scheme for realizing low-loss all-dielectric dual-band anisotropic zero-index materials utilizing three-dimensional terahertz silicon photonic crystals. The designed silicon photonic crystal supports dual semi-Dirac cones with linear-parabolic dispersions at two distinct frequencies, functioning as an effective double-zero material along two specific propagation directions and as an impedance-mismatched single-zero material along the orthogonal direction at the two frequencies. Highly anisotropic wave transport properties arising from the unique dispersion and extreme anisotropy are further demonstrated. Our findings not only show a novel methodology for achieving low-loss zero-index materials with expanded operational frequencies but also open up promising avenues for advanced electromagnetic wave manipulation.

Abstract:Zero-index (ZI) materials are synthetic optical materials with vanishing effective permittivity and/or permeability at a given design frequency. Recently, it has been shown that the permeability of a zero-index host material can be deterministically tuned by adding photonic dopants. Here, we apply metal-induced crystallization (MIC) in quasi-random metal-semiconductor composites to fabricate large-area zero-index materials. Using Ag-Si as a model systems, we demonstrate that the localized crystallization of the semiconductor at the metal/semiconductor interface can be used as design parameter to control light interaction in such a disordered system. The induced crystallization generates new zero-index states corresponding to a hybridized plasmonic mode emerging from selective coupling of light to the ångström-sized crystalline shell of the semiconductor. Photonic doping can be used to enhance the transmission in these disordered metamaterials as is shown by simulation. Our results break ground for novel large-area zero-index materials for wafer scale applications and beyond.
