Differential Geometry and its Applications

Abstract:In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that an (α,β)-space admits a measure μ with vanishing S-curvature everywhere. It is shown that the measure of such an (α,β)-space must coincide with the Riemannian volume measure of α up to a constant multiplication. Moreover, the characterization of (α,β)-spaces admitting a measure μ with weak isotropic S-curvature is given.

Abstract:We derive a new criterion for a real-valued function $u$ to be in the Sobolev space $W^{1,2}(\R^n)$. This criterion consists of comparing the value of a functional $\int f(u)$ with the values of the same functional applied to convolutions of $u$ with a Dirac sequence. The difference of these values converges to zero as the convolutions approach $u$, and we prove that the rate of convergence to zero is connected to regularity: $u\in W^{1,2}$ if and only if the convergence is sufficiently fast. We finally apply our criterium to a minimization problem with constraints, where regularity of minimizers cannot be deduced from the Euler-Lagrange equation.

Abstract:We establish an improved form of the classical logarithmic Sobolev inequality for the Gaussian measure restricted to probability densities which satisfy a Poincaré inequality. The result implies a lower bound on the deficit in terms of the quadratic Kantorovich-Wasserstein distance. We similarly investigate the deficit in the Talagrand quadratic transportation cost inequality this time by means of an ${\rm L}^1$-Kantorovich-Wasserstein distance, optimal for product measures, and deduce a lower bound on the deficit in the logarithmic Sobolev inequality in terms of this metric. Applications are given in the context of the Bakry-Émery theory and the coherent state transform. The proofs combine tools from semigroup and heat kernel theory and optimal mass transportation.

Abstract:In this note we study the eigenvalue growth of infinite graphs with discrete spectrum. We assume that the corresponding Dirichlet forms satisfy certain Sobolev-type inequalities and that the total measure is finite. In this sense, the associated operators on these graphs display similarities to elliptic operators on bounded domains in the continuum. Specifically, we prove lower bounds on the eigenvalue growth and show by examples that corresponding upper bounds can not be established.

Abstract:Abstract Let be the discrete hypercube equipped with the uniform probability measure . We prove that if is a Banach space of finite cotype and , then every function satisfies the dimension‐free vector‐valued logarithmic Sobolev inequality The finite cotype assumption is necessary for the conclusion to hold. This estimate is the hypercube counterpart of a result of Ledoux (1988) in Gauss space and the optimal vector‐valued version of a deep inequality of Talagrand (1993). As an application, we use such vector‐valued logarithmic Sobolev inequalities to derive new lower bounds for the bi‐Lipschitz distortion of nonlinear quotients of the Hamming cube into Banach spaces with prescribed Rademacher type.

Abstract:We follow the method of ABP estimate in \cite{brendle2021} and apply it to spacelike submanifolds in $\mathbb R^{n,1}$. We then obtain Michael-Simon type inequalities. Surprisingly, our investigation leads to a Sobolev inequality without a mean curvature term, provided the hypersurface is mean convex.

Abstract:The usual Sobolev inequality in $\mathbb{R}^N$, asserts that $\|\nabla u\|_{L^p(\mathbb{R}^N)} \geq \mathcal{S}\|u\|_{L^{p^*}(\mathbb{R}^N)}$ for $1<p<N$ and $p^*=\frac{pN}{N-p}$, with $\mathcal{S}$ being the sharp constant. Based on a recent work of Figalli and Zhang [Duke Math. J., 2022], a weak norm remainder term of Sobolev inequality in a subdomain $\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ with finite measure is established, i.e., for $\frac{2N}{N+1}<p<N$ there exists a constant $\mathcal{C}>0$ independent of $\Omega$ such that \[ \|\nabla u\|^p_{L^p(\Omega)} -\mathcal{S}^p\|u\|^p_{L^{p^*}(\Omega)} \geq \mathcal{C}|\Omega|^{-\frac{\gamma}{p^*(p-1)}} \|u\|_{L^{\bar{p}}_w(\Omega)}^{\gamma}\| u\|_{L^{p^*}(\Omega)}^{p-\gamma},\quad \mbox{for all}\ u\in C^\infty_0(\Omega)\setminus\{0\}, \] where $\gamma=\max\{2,p\}$, $\bar{p}=p^*(p-1)/p$, and $\|\cdot\|_{L^{\bar{p}}_w(\Omega)}$ denotes the weak $L^{\bar{p}}$-norm. Abstract:In this work, we study the Sobolev inequality on noncommutative Euclidean spaces. As a simple consequence, we obtain the Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality and as its application we show global well-posedness of nonlinear PDEs in the noncommutative Euclidean space. Moreover, we show that the logarithmic Sobolev inequality is equivalent to the Nash inequality for possibly different constants in this noncommutative setting by completing the list in noncommutative Varopoulos's theorem in [37]. Finally, we present a direct application of the Nash inequality to compute the time decay for solutions of the heat equation in the noncommutative setting.

Abstract:In this article, we consider the bounded variation capacity (BV capacity) and characterize the Sobolev-type inequalities related to BV functions in a general framework of strictly local Dirichlet spaces with a doubling measure via the BV capacity. Under a weak Bakry-Émery curvature-type condition, we give the connection between the Hausdorff measure and the Hausdorff capacity, and discover some capacitary inequalities and Maz'ya-Sobolev inequalities for BV functions. The De Giorgi characterization for total variation is also obtained with a quasi-Bakry-Émery curvature condition. It should be noted that the results in this article are proved if the Dirichlet space supports the weak ( 1 , 2 ) -Poincaré inequality instead of the weak ( 1 , 1 ) -Poincaré inequality compared with the results in the previous references.

Abstract:The classical Sobolev imbedding theorem is generalized to Sobolev spaces of differential forms.Firstly,together with the results in terms of functions and properties of differential forms themselves,the imbedding theorem for Sobolev spaces W1,p(Ω,Λl) is established by Minkowski inequality and other fundamental inequalities.Secondly,applying the compact imbedding results in terms of functions,the compact imbedding theorem of W1,p(Ω,Λl) is obtained by the diagonal rule.Lastly,the above results are extended to more general spaces Wm,p(Ω,Λl).

Abstract:We prove that if the Sobolev embedding $M^{1,p}(X)\hookrightarrow L^q(X)$ holds for some $q>p\geq 1$ in a metric measure space $(X,d,\mu),$ then a constant $C$ exists such that $\mu(B(x,r))\geq Cr^n$ for all $x\in X$ and all $0<r\leq 1,$ where $\frac{1}{p}-\frac{1}{q}=\frac{1}{n}.$ This was proved in \cite{Gor17} assuming a doubling condition on the measure $\mu.$

Abstract:For a function $f$ from the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(C)$ ($C\subset\mathbb{R}^d$ is an open convex cone), a sharp inequality that estimates $\| f\|_{L_{\infty}}$ via the $L_{p}$-norm of its gradient and a seminorm of the function is obtained. With the help of this inequality, a sharp inequality is proved, which estimates the ${L_{\infty}}$-norm of the Radon--Nikodym derivative of a charge defined on Lebesgue measurable subsets of $C$ via the $L_p$-norm of the gradient of this derivative and a seminorm of the charge. In the case, when $C=\mathbb{R}_+^m\times \mathbb{R}^{d-m}$, $0\le m\le d$, we obtain inequalities that estimate the ${L_{\infty}}$-norm of a mixed derivative of a function $f\colon C\to \mathbb{R}$ using its ${L_{\infty}}$-norm and the $L_p$-norm of the gradient of the function's mixed derivative.
