Abstract:A probability model is developed to calculate the intensity and phase noise induced by a semiconductor optical amplifier used as an in-line amplifier in a WDM system. An analytical result is obtained which shows the dependence of noise on number of channels, input power, bit rate, and carrier lifetime. The result shows that adding a CW reservoir channel is an efficient way to suppress the intensity noise. The theoretical results are in agreement with numeric simulations and reported experiments.

Abstract:According to feedback decomposition theorem(FDT),the gate-drain capacitance of a transistor was decomposed into the input and output nodes.Then the influence of gate-drain capacitance on input impedance and noise figure of low noise amplifier(LNA) were discussed.Based on the analytic result,revised input matching and noise figure formulas were developed,also the noise optimization method under the constraint of power dissipation was proposed.The post-layout simulation results show that the 2.4 GHz LNA,based on SMIC 0.18 μm RF CMOS(Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) technology,consumes a low DC power of 2.4 mW from a 1.2 V supply,noise figure of 1.0 dB,power gain of 16.3dB,input and output losses below-22 dB,and input third-order intercept point of-3.2 dBm.Compared with existing designs,the proposed 2.4 GHz LNA based on the revised formulas had lower power dissipation,better input impedance matching and lower noise factor.

Abstract:A theoretical model for analyzing the chirping characteristics of a traveling-wave semiconductor optical amplifier was improved. The factors of the finite facet reflectivity and the spontaneous emission are considered in the model. The theoretical research shows that introducing these factors will reduce the amplitude of nonlinear frequency chirping imposed on amplified light pulse.

Abstract:The theory of multi-section model for semiconductor optical amplifier(SOA) is described.Three multi-section models are presented and applied to the simulation of wavelength conversion based on cross-gain-modulation in SOA.By analyzing the difference between the simulated and experimental results,it is emphasized that the amplified spontaneous emission(ASE) has important effects on the gain compression and pulseshaping during the all-optical signal processing based on SOAs.

Abstract:A two-electrode semiconductor optical amplifier that has two sections and two separated electrodes is proposed for an all-optical wavelength converter. Pattern effect reduction based on dynamic gain compensation is theoretically investigated using a time-domain model that takes into account the carrier diffusion process between the two sections, and the Q factor of the converted light is calculated to evaluate pattern effects. Simulation results show that the Q factor is greatly improved when the section lengths and the currents are appropriately selected. (C) 2010 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Silicon based optical modulators with improved extinction ratio (ER) of 25 dB were demonstrated on complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) platform. It was proposed that the effect of optical absorption due to free carriers accumulated in silicon should be considered in the analysis of device configuration. Experimental results presented in this study were identical with the proposed analyses. The modulators were operated with the data transmission rate of 3.2 Gbps.

Abstract:Semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is regarded as a promising candidate to amplify the optical signal in next-generation access network, especially for O-band signal transmission. However, the SOA-based system suffers from the pattern-dependent effect due to its gain saturation. Compared to digital signal processing (DSP) at receiver, DSP in the transmitter can reduce implementation complexity, which is attractive for the multi-user system. In this paper, we propose three methods to mitigate the pattern-dependent effect in SOA and compare their performance based on: 1) look-up-table (LUT) considering pattern-dependent effect, 2) pre-distortion without considering pattern-dependent effect, 3) probabilistic shaping (PS). The performance of three mitigation methods is investigated in an intensity modulation with direct detection (IM/DD) 4-ary pulse-amplitude-modulation (PAM-4) transmission system at O-band. Our research results show that all these schemes can improve the receiver dynamic range of PAM-4 signals at 50 Gbit/s and 100 Gbit/s. Moreover, PS and LUT can also improve the receiver dynamic range of 75-Gbit/s PAM-8 signals.

Transmission Performance Analysis of Fiber Optical Parametric Amplifiers for Wdm System

Abstract:A numerical analysis is presented on the long-haul wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) transmission system employing fiber-optic parametric amplifier (FOPA) cascades based on one-pump FOPA model with Raman Effect taken into account. The end-to-end equalization scheme is applied to optimize the system features in terms of proper output powers and signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) in all the channels. The numerical results show that—through adjusting the fiber spans along with the number of FOPAs as well as the channel powers at the terminals in a prescribed way—the transmission distance and system performance can be optimized. By comparing the results generated by different lengths of fiber span, we come to the optimal span length to achieve the best transmission performance. Furthermore, we make a comparison among the long-haul WDM transmission systems employing different inline amplifiers, namely, FOPA, erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and Fiber Raman Amplifier (FRA). FOPA demonstrates its advantage over the other two in terms of system features.

Abstract:Using a dynamic model combined with ASE noise we give a analytical theory describing wavelength converters based on cross-gain modulation (XGM) in semiconductor optical amplifiers. Varyed bias current, power and wavelength of the two interacted beam, a schematic of ASE noise power distribution in longitudinal direction of SOA is demonstrated. The theoretical results indicate that bigger bias current can perform better ER and SNR. A better performance can be achieved by increasing pump power and decreasing probe power. There is a optimal length of SOA for certain pump and probe wave.

Abstract:We propose an asymmetrical interferometer to compensate the pattern effect in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) as an inline amplifier in dense wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) system. Experiments are demonstrated with a commercial integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI)-SOA. The experiments showed that in a 16/spl times/10-Gb/s DWDM system, the power penalty induced by the SOA decreased from 6.8 to 0.9 dB by the interference at 1 mW input power, and the input power dynamic range of the SOA was efficiently extended.

Abstract:The influence of input pump and signal powers on the converted optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR), intersymbol interference (ISI), and bit-error-rate (BER) performance of the wavelength converter based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in semiconductor optical amplifiers is presented. The results of BER measurement show that there exists a tradeoff between maximizing OSNR and minimizing ISI, The minimum power penalty less than 1 dB is obtained by optimizing the input pump and signal powers.

Abstract:A scheme for mitigating patterning effects in wavelength conversion by using a concatenated semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and electroabsorption modulator (EAM) is proposed. The optimization of the parameters of the semiconductor devices and receiver electronics is theoretically investigated. The bit error ratio (BER) of the output signals in both the co-propagating and the counter-propagating configurations is quantitatively evaluated. The simulation results indicate that the patterning effect in wavelength conversion due to the slow recovery of the carrier density in the SOA can be well compensated by a concatenated EAM. The simulation results are confirmed by preliminary pump-probe experiment using a 10Gb/s clock pulse train. (C) 2008 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Degradation of high power signals is observed at bitrates comparable to the gain recovery time in Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOA). The device studied here reduces this pattern effect of SOAs. It is a non-linear Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a SOA in each branch. It has an unequal input power distribution over the branches, which themselves are identical. This causes destructive interference at the output for low power inputs. Conversely, different phase shifts for high power inputs result in constructive interference. Therefore, gain saturation is observed for much higher input powers. This results in reduced pattern effects. Simulations and experiments confirm the performance.

Abstract:A comprehensive method is proposed to investigate gain narrowing and the gain saturation effect in a fiber chirped pulse amplification system. It can solve the comprehensive gain effect in time and spectral domains simultaneously based on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Through numerical simulation under various pump powers, our simulation results benefit from good agreement in principle with the corresponding experimental results. Our model enjoys ameliorated accuracy and generalized compatibility compared to some conventional models, thus paving the way for further applications in chirped pulse amplifications.

Abstract:A simple analytical expression is derived to calculate the Bit-Error Rate in lightwave systems with optical amplifiers. According to this expression the Bit-Error Rate can be estimated by the signal power and the ASE spectrum density before the receiver. The theoretical calculation agrees with the experiment very well, so it can provide a method to judge the quality of the optical channel in the optical communication system with optical amplifiers. Futhermore, the impact of the ASE noise on the receiver sensitivity is discussed. It is important to select proper receivers in practical systems.

Abstract:The noise characteristics of semiconductor laser amplifiers (SLAs) in the Ga1-xInxAs/GaInAsP/InP strained quantum well system were theoretically calculated and analyzed using density-matrix theory taking into account the effects of band-mixing on both the valence subbands and the transition dipole moments. The numerical results showed that a reduced noise figure can be obtained in both tensile and compressively strained quantum well structures due to the increase in differential gain and the decrease in transparent carrier density. From a comparison among compressively strained (x = 0.70), unstrained (x = 0.53), and tensile strained (x = 0.40) QW SLAs at a fixed carrier density and optical confinement factor, it was found that the noise figure of the tensile strained QW becomes the lowest value of 3.4 dB at average input optical power of -20 dB.
