Abstract:This study performed a series of comparable experiments (with or without column chromatography) to evaluate whether non-deviated Cu isotope ratios can be obtained directly by Nu Plasma II multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) using standard-sample bracketing with Ga as internal mass bias correction model (C-SSBIN) without column chromatography. Twelve Cu-dominated minerals (copper plate, native copper, chalcopyrite, bornite, chalcocite, digenite, covellite, tetrahedrite, azurite, malachite, atacamite, and cyanotrichite) displayed little drift in δ65Cu values compared with those of minerals with column chromatography, with Δδ65Cuwithout−with ranging from −0.04 to +0.02‰. This means that Cu isotope ratios in Cu-dominated minerals can be achieved without column chromatography, due to the simple matrix and the stability of the machine by using C-SSBIN mode. The acidity and internal standard concentration mismatch effects, as well as the matrix effect, were strictly assessed by Nu Plasma II MC-ICP-MS in a wet-plasma mode in the State Key Laboratory of Continental Dynamics (SKLCD). Finally, a long-term reproducibility of better than ±0.03‰ [n = 38, 2 standard deviations (2s)] were achieved by repeatedly measuring chalcopyrite without column chromatography over 4 months.

Abstract:Although in many cases Pb isotopic analysis can be relied on for provenance determination of ancient bronzes, sometimes the use of “non-traditional” isotopic systems, such as those of Cu and Sn, is required. The work reported on in this paper aimed at revising the methodology for Cu and Sn isotope ratio measurements in archaeological bronzes via optimization of the analytical procedures in terms of sample pre-treatment, measurement protocol, precision, and analytical uncertainty. For Cu isotopic analysis, both Zn and Ni were investigated for their merit as internal standard (IS) relied on for mass bias correction. The use of Ni as IS seems to be the most robust approach as Ni is less prone to contamination, has a lower abundance in bronzes and an ionization potential similar to that of Cu, and provides slightly better reproducibility values when applied to NIST SRM 976 Cu isotopic reference material. The possibility of carrying out direct isotopic analysis without prior Cu isolation (with AG-MP-1 anion exchange resin) was investigated by analysis of CRM IARM 91D bronze reference material, synthetic solutions, and archaeological bronzes. Both procedures (Cu isolation/no Cu isolation) provide similar δ65Cu results with similar uncertainty budgets in all cases (±0.02–0.04 per mil in delta units, k = 2, n = 4). Direct isotopic analysis of Cu therefore seems feasible, without evidence of spectral interference or matrix-induced effect on the extent of mass bias. For Sn, a separation protocol relying on TRU-Spec anion exchange resin was optimized, providing a recovery close to 100 % without on-column fractionation. Cu was recovered quantitatively together with the bronze matrix with this isolation protocol. Isotopic analysis of this Cu fraction provides δ65Cu results similar to those obtained upon isolation using AG-MP-1 resin. This means that Cu and Sn isotopic analysis of bronze alloys can therefore be carried out after a single chromatographic separation using TRU-Spec resin. Tin isotopic analysis was performed relying on Sb as an internal standard used for mass bias correction. The reproducibility over a period of 1 month (n = 42) for the mass bias-corrected Sn isotope ratios is in the range of 0.06–0.16 per mil (2 s), for all the ratios monitored.
Precise/small sample size determination of stable Cd isotope ratios of geological samples with double spike MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:The precise determination of Cd isotope ratios via multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) has made the widespread application of Cd isotopes possible. However, previous studies are complicated by the chemical purification method and molecular interferences from Zn (e.g.(ZnAr+)-Zn-70-Ar-36, (ZnAr+)-Zn-68-Ar-38, and (ZnAr+)-Zn-66-Ar-40 on Cd-106(+), (ZnAr+)-Zn-70-Ar-38 and (ZnAr+)-Zn-68-Ar-40 on Cd-108(+), (ZnAr+)-Zn-70-Ar-40 on Cd-110(+)). Separation of Zn from Cd requires the usage of a toxic reagent (HBr) and is also complicated by the relatively high procedural Zn blank especially when only a very small amount of Cd is available. Here we present a high-precision Cd isotope measurement method using double spike MC-ICP-MS, which avoids the molecular interferences from Zn introduced by both sample and chemical purification. A Cd-111-Cd-113 double spike pair optimized for the Cd-111, Cd-112, Cd-113, and Cd-114 inversion was used to correct for the mass bias. Elemental doping experiments suggest that the measured Cd isotope data were not significantly affected when the measured solution has, Zn/Cd < 10(3), Pd/Cd < 10(2), Fe/Cd < 10(-2), In/Cd < 10(-3), Sn/Cd < 10(-1), Zr/Cd < 10(-2), Nb/Cd < 10(-1), Mo/Cd < 10(-2), Ru/Cd < 10(-2), Ga/Cd < 10(-2), Ge/Cd < 10(-2), Se/Cd < 10(-1), and As/Cd < 10(-1). We thus modified the chemical purification method by removing the HBr step and eluting Zn and Cd together. The minimum requirement of sample size for precise measurement of stable Cd isotope ratios was tested to be as low as 10 ng. The measurements of pure Cd solutions (BAM I012 Cd and HPS Cd) give a long-term intermediate precision for delta Cd-114/110 relative to NIST SRM 3108 of 0.05 parts per thousand. We further validated our method by measuring different reference materials covering a relatively wide range of Zn/Cd (similar to 9 to 1239), the results of which agree within uncertainty with previous studies. Our study thus provides an efficient and precise way to determine stable Cd isotope ratios of geological samples with relatively low Cd concentrations.
AMS measurement of 53Mn and its initial application at CIAE

Abstract:The determination of cosmogenic 53Mn in terrestrial archives has important applications, such as burial ages, exposure age and erosion rates. Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is the most sensitive technique to detect minute amounts of 53Mn. 53Mn measurements were developed at the China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE) using the ΔE-Q3D equipped AMS system. This approach was recently optimized with the goal to reach the sensitivity required for AMS measurements of 53Mn in deep-sea ferromanganese crust (DSFC) samples. Based on these improvements of sample preparation, current beam transmission and so on, 53Mn in two samples of DSFC was measured by AMS. The ratios of 53Mn/Mn corresponding to an age of 3.77±0.42 and 13.73±2.74Ma by 129I dating method are (5.01±2.15)×10−13 and (1.90±0.96)×10−13. The ratios are close to the experimental reference values, deduced from the previous research. The experimental progress, performances and results are presented in this contribution.

Abstract:Lead isotope analysis (LIA) is widely applied by archaeologists as a method for provenance studies of metal artifacts. The study aims to realize of lead isotope analysis methodology and evaluate of metrological characteristics for the studies of Bronze Age archaeological alloys dated between the 3rd–2nd millennium BC boundary and the beginning of 2nd millennium BC from the collections of the State Historical Museum (Moscow) to assess the uniformity/heterogeneity of ore base utilization and to subsequently determine the localization of utilized resources in the Bronze Age. The following bronze artifacts were studied: three celts from the Turbino cemetery, Perm Krai; the spearhead from the Bolshaya Plavitsa burial ground, Lipetsk region; the bead from Gerasimovka III, Orenburg region; and the bead from Stepnoye VII burial ground, Chelyabinsk region. Lead isotope measurements were performed on a Neptune Plus multi-collector ICP-mass spectrometer (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Germany) using the Tl-normalization technique after the chromatographic lead isolation. The calculated U(k = 2) method expanded uncertainty comprised U(208Pb/204Pb) = 0.3%, U(207Pb/204Pb) = 0.1% and U(206Pb/204Pb) = 0.1%. The results of the lead isotopic composition of archaeological bronze samples showed fairly wide variations in the isotopic composition of the analyzed alloys, reflecting the complex pattern of geochemical relationships within the alloys.

High Precision Isotope Ratio Measurements of Mercury Isotopes in Cinnabar Ores Using Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:Variations in Hg isotope ratios in cinnabar ores obtained from different countries were detected by high precision isotope ratio measurements using multi-collector inductively coupled mass spectrometry (MC-ICP- MS). Values of delta(198/202)Hg varied from 0.0 - 1.3parts per thousand relative to a NIST SRM 1641d Hg solution. The typical external uncertainty of the delta values was 0.06 to 0.26parts per thousand. Hg was introduced into the plasma as elemental Hg after reduction by sodium borohydride. A significant fractionation of lead isotopes was observed during the simultaneous generation of lead hydride, preventing normalization of the Hg isotope ratios using the measured (208/206)Pb ratio. Hg ratios were instead corrected employing the simultaneously measured (205/203)Tl ratio. Using a 10 ng ml(-1) Hg solution and 10 min of sampling, introducing 60 ng of Hg, the internal precision of the isotope ratio measurements was as low as 14 ppm. Absolute Hg ratios deviated from the representative IUPAC values by approximately 0.2% per u. This observation is explained by the inadequacy of the exponential law to correct for mass bias in MC-ICP- MS measurements. In the absence of a precisely characterized Hg isotope ratio standard, we were not able to determine unambiguously the absolute Hg ratios of the ore samples, highlighting the urgent need for certified standard materials.

Abstract:An attempt on the use of secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) in studying ancient Chinese bronze is reported with an evaluation of the suitability of SIMS for the provenance study of ancient bronze objects. The advantage of using SIMS in the study of the lead isotope ratio is the high sensitivity that enables the examination of small fragments of valuable relies that are often difficult to collect. The application of SIMS in this direction widens the sampling area, which is limited by the use of thermal ionization mass spectroscopy (TIMS). The focus of the study has been placed on the precision of SIMS when compared to TIMS and the effect of sample matrices on the precision. Samples of Chinese bronze artefacts and a standard lead sample (SRM 981) were tested for their lead isotope ratios using both SIMS and TIMS. A comparison of the data obtained using the two techniques showed that SIMS results have a relatively large standard deviation, which was attributed to the non-uniformity of the ancient samples and the single-isotope detection system of the SIMS set-up used, Matrix effects were found to be small among bronze samples of different compositions. Non-conducting samples can also be analysed when a specimen isolation technique is employed. Although SIMS gave higher uncertainties than TIMS, the SIMS technique can be applied easily to differentiate the high radiogenic lead in Shang bronze artefacts from common lead. Abstract:This study presents a high‐precision Cd isotope measurement method for soil and rock reference materials using MC‐ICP‐MS with double spike correction. The effects of molecular interferences (e.g., 109Ag1H+, 94Zr16O+, 94Mo16O+ and 70Zn40Ar+) and isobaric interferences (e.g., Pd, In and Sn) to Cd isotope measurements were quantitatively evaluated. When the measured solution has Ag/Cd ≤ 5, Zn/Cd ≤ 0.02, Mo/Cd ≤ 0.4, Zr/Cd ≤ 0.001, Pd/Cd ≤ 5 × 10−5 and In/Cd ≤ 10−3, the measured Cd isotope data were not significantly affected. The intermediate measurement precision of pure Cd solutions (BAM I012 Cd, Münster Cd and AAS Cd) was better than ± 0.05‰ (2s) for δ114/110Cd. The δ114/110Cd values of soil reference materials (NIST SRM 2709, 2709a, 2710, 2710a, 2711, 2711a and GSS‐1) relative to NIST SRM 3108 were in the range of −0.251 to 0.632‰, the δ114/110Cd values of rock reference materials (BCR‐2, BIR‐1, BHVO‐2, W‐2, AGV‐2, GSP‐2 and COQ‐1) varied from −0.196‰ to 0.098‰, and that of the manganese nodule (NOD‐P‐1) was 0.163 ± 0.040‰ (2s, n = 8). The large variation in Cd isotopes in soils and igneous rocks indicates that they can be more widely used to study magmatic and supergene processes.

Abstract:The elemental analysis of ancient gold items in the context of provenance studies in archaeology and history may characterize metallic stocks and highlight metal circulation in a given space and time; however, they cannot point to a specific geological province and/or ore. In contrast, isotope analysis may offer valuable insight into provenance studies. For instance, lead isotopes may provide relations with the geodynamic provinces of the host mineralizations and some insight into their timing. Iron and copper isotopes may give information on the ore type, i.e. , supergene versus hydrothermal or igneous. We thus adapted a single column separative chemistry, initially intended for silicate rocks, for ancient gold matrices to recover purified fractions of Pb, Fe and Cu based on anionic exchange chromatography. Isotopic measurements of these elements on new home-made gold standards, as well as on ancient gold test coins, were carried out using Multi-Collector – Inductively Coupled Plasma – Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Our results show that it is possible to obtain precise and accurate measurements of Pb, Cu and Fe isotope compositions in gold matrices reflecting various elemental compositions. We characterized our gold test coins with the following uncertainties: ±0.036 on 208 Pb/ 204 Pb, ±0.016 on 207 Pb/ 204 Pb, ±0.019 on 206 Pb/ 204 Pb, ±0.00041 on 208 Pb/ 206 Pb and ±0.00006 on 207 Pb/ 206 Pb (2SD; n = 14); ±0.047‰ for δ 57 Fe IRMM14 (2SE; n = 15) and ±0.043‰ for δ 65 Cu SRM976 (2SE; n = 12). These uncertainties are in good agreement with the long-term (>1.5 years) reproducibilities (2SD) estimated in the course of this study on the basis of repeated measurement of in-house standards. The potential of these new tracers in addressing archaeological and historical questions, such as the provenance of ancient gold coins, is then emphasized. The combination of Pb, Fe and Cu isotopes with gold chemistry appears particularly promising.

Abstract:Corrosion rinds on bronzes vessels were studied by ICP-AES and Finnigan MAT262 mass spectrograph to determine whether Pb isotope compositions of corrosion rinds were perceptibly changed in the process of corrosion.It is found that Pb isotope compositions of the corrosion rinds are similar(within experimental error) to those of the metal cores of the bronze and that corrosion rinds may be used to study the provenance of ancient bronzes without compromising their integrity.Meanwhile,the result implies that the uneven mixture of lead from the different origins might also lead to the variation of Pb isotope composition between the corrosion rinds and metal cores of the bronze vessels.

Abstract:There has been a growing interest in using cadmium (Cd) isotopes to trace the source of Cd contamination and Cd cycling in the Earth surface. Yet it remains technically challenging to precisely and efficiently determine the Cd isotopic compositions of samples with extremely low Cd concentrations due to the imperfect separation of Cd from the matrix and the interference caused by resin-derived organics when TRU Spec resin was used. In this study, we present a two-stage column chromatography system (AG-MP-1M resin + UTEVA resin) for Cd purification. Here, a Prefilter resin combined with UTEVA resin effectively purifies Cd from Sn after the separation of Cd by AG-MP-1M column while keeping the phosphorous organic compounds to an acceptable level. In contrast to TRU Spec resin, which is prone to leaking through the Prefilter resin, we find that UTEVA resin is effectively retained by the Prefilter resin, thus avoiding the P-related anomalous shifts in the Cd isotope measurement (P/Cd < 1). UTEVA resin also exhibits a comparable capacity for purifying Cd from Sn and Mo when compared to TRU Spec resin. The recovery of the two-stage column system is generally higher than 99% and the procedural blank accounting for sample digestion and chemical purification is lower than 20 pg. The Cd isotopic compositions of several reference materials are determined using double spike MC-ICP-MS, with a 111Cd-113Cd double spike pair optimized for the 111Cd, 112Cd, 113Cd, and 114Cd inversion. The δ114/110Cd values of these reference materials relative to NIST SRM 3108 agree within analytical uncertainty with previous studies. The long-term external precision of δ114/110Cd determined based on replicated measurements of BCR-2 is 0.04‰ (n=10, 2SD) for a minimum sample size of 10 ng. Our study thus provides an efficient two-stage column system for determining the Cd isotopic compositions of geological samples with relatively low Cd concentrations.

Abstract:Analytical advances in Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) over the past decade have led to rapid growth in studies utilizing non-traditional stable isotopes. There are substantial analytical challenges for achieving precise and accurate measurements of these isotopes that limit their applications in geoscience where natural isotopic variations are generally small. Here, we evaluate experimental factors that may affect the accuracy and repeatability of isotopic measurements of selected stable metal isotopes (Li, Mg, Fe, Cu, and Zn) on a Nu Plasma II MC-ICPMS to provide optimized analytical protocols for acquiring high quality data. Our results suggest that the repeatability level (2SD) that is readily obtainable for delta Li-7 is +/- 0.09 parts per thousand to +/- 0.24 parts per thousand, for delta Mg-26 is +/- 0.03 parts per thousand to +/- 0.07 parts per thousand, for delta Fe-56 is +/- 0.05 parts per thousand to +/- 0.07 parts per thousand, for delta Cu-65 is +/- 0.03 parts per thousand to +/- 0.05 parts per thousand, and for delta Zn-66 is +/- 0.02 parts per thousand to +/- 0.04 parts per thousand. Instrumental mass bias for these isotope systems can be corrected adequately using the standard-sample bracketing method but it requires that target elements are of high purity, a close match in analyte concentrations between samples and bracketing standards, and preparation of all running solutions using the same concentration of nitric acid. Overall, the Nu Plasma II is well suited for precise and accurate analyses of the isotopes studied here, and the optimal results were obtained using a 'wet' plasma operating at a normal radio-frequency (RF) power.
Efficient Cd separation protocols for high-precision cadmium isotope analyses of diverse samples by double spike MC-ICP-MS

Abstract:Cadmium isotope analyses are applied for research in planetary, Earth, environmental and life sciences. However, there is still a lack of efficient methods for the separation of the trace element Cd from the different types of samples that are of interest for isotopic analyses. This study presents new and improved Cd separation and purification techniques for meteorite, diverse terrestrial and seawater samples prior to Cd isotope measurements by multiple collector ICP-MS using the double spike approach for mass bias correction. The first separation stage for meteorites and terrestrial samples employs an existing anion exchange chromatography method that uses AG MP-1M resin, whilst AG 1-X8 and Nobias Chelate PA-1 resins were applied for the initial isolation of Cd from small and large seawater samples, respectively. Teflon microcolumns and AG MP-1M anion exchange resin was then employed for further Cd purification of all sample types. The methods consistently isolate Cd from matrix elements more efficiently than previous protocols, whilst achieving consistently high Cd recoveries, of >95% for meteorite and terrestrial samples and >80% for seawater samples, combined with low procedural blanks of <0.08 ng. The performance of the new protocols is demonstrated by repeated Cd isotope analyses of well-characterized geological and biological reference materials, which produced data that are in excellent agreement with results that were obtained with previous, more laborious separation methods. Furthermore, precise Cd isotope compositions (δ 114 Cd) are presented for the Murchison meteorite and, for the first time, the ordinary chondrite GRO 95504. Finally, analyses of seven seawater samples, with Cd concentrations between 0.25 and 0.91 nmol kg -1 using sample volumes of up to 2 L, generated results consistent with those of previous studies. Overall, the new methods thus enable unbiased δ 114 Cd measurements for diverse sample types with a 2SD precision of better than ±0.07‰, even for samples with 10 ng or less of natural Cd.

Abstract:Inductively coupled plasma mass (ICP-MS) spectroscopy is widely used for screening materials of low background detectors in dark matter and double beta decay searches due to its high sensitivity to trace $^{238}$U and $^{232}$Th. This work describes a novel co-precipitation approach to measure the amount of $^{238}$U in high-purity copper to sub-ppt level. Such an approach allows the pre-concentration of U and removal of the matrix, by selecting a proper precipitator to co-precipitate with $^{238}$U and using excess ammonia water to separate the uranium hydroxide from copper by forming water-soluble tetra-amminecopper (II). The isotope dilution method and standard addition method were both used to mitigate the matrix effect and cross-check each other. The latter was also used to measure the recovery efficiency of $^{238}$U by using $^{233}$U as the tracer. The method detection limit (MDL) reached $\sim$0.1 pg $^{238}$U /g Cu for both methods while the recovery efficiency of uranium robustly remains 65\%--85\%. Various sources of interference in the ICP-MS analysis were thoroughly evaluated, and the contamination from reagents were found to be the dominant factor that affected the MDL. Further purification will allow significant improvements in the MDL. This co-precipitate approach can be easily extended to measure $^{232}$Th by using $^{229}$Th as the tracer.

High Precision In-Situ Pb Isotopic Analysis of Sulfide Minerals by Femtosecond Laser Ablation Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Abstract:An in-situ microanalysis of Pb isotopic compositions in sulfide minerals is carried out by using femtosecond laser-ablation multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry(fs LA-MC-ICP-MS).High-temperature-activated carbon was used to filter Hg contained in the carrier gas,which reduced the Hg background signal by 48%and also lowered the detection limit of the analysis.Fractionation and mass discrimination effects existing in the ICP-MS analytical processes were corrected using an internal reference Tl in conjunction with an external reference NIST SRM 610.The proposed method was used to analyze the Pb isotopic compositions of chalcopyrite,pyrite,and sphalerite from the Dulong Sn-Zn-In polymetallic ore district.The results showed that in this ore district,the sulfide minerals and different grains of the same sulfide mineral show a large variation in Pb content up to 1000-fold.The studied pyrites show relatively higher Pb contents and homogeneous Pb isotopic compositions,whereas the sphalerites have low Pb contents but most variable Pb isotopic compositions.It is suggested that the large variation of Pb isotopic composition may reflect a late hydrothermal superimposition on the primary sulfide formation.In addition,radiogenic Pb accumulated by radioactive decay of trace amounts of U over time in the host minerals may also be one of the causes for the large variation range of Pb content and Pb isotopic composition of those low-Pb sphalerites.Chalcopyrite and sphalerite grains with Pb content greater than 10 ppm presented a consistent Pb isotopic distribution,whereas all the sulfide grains with Pb content greater than 100 ppm had consistent Pb isotopic composition within 2s measurement uncertainties.The in-situ analysis of Pb isotopic composition agreed well with the results obtained by conventional chemical methods within2s measurement uncertainties,indicating that the data obtained by fs LA-MC-ICP-MS are reliable.Additionally,this study indicates that the Pb isotopic composition could truthfully record the source of ore-forming minerals only for sulfide minerals with high Pb content.On the contrary,the Pb isotopic composition of low-Pb sulfide minerals may be affected by trace amounts of U in the host minerals that may lead to a highly radiogenic Pb isotope ratio.Alternatively,it is also possible that late fluid metasomatic overprinting may alter the Pb isotopic compositions.

Abstract:The simulated smelting and founding experiment of bronze showed that the copper minerals from different regions could be distinguished clearly by using the multi-statistical analysis based on choosing the chalcophile elements determined by ICP-AES. In the present paper, the data of trace elements in bronzes from Panlongcheng Site and Ezhou, which were determined by NAA, were tried to be processed. The analytical result showed that the bronzes from Panlongcheng and Ezhou could be divided clearly, just like the results of the former simulated smelting and founding experiment of bronze. So, the feasibility of trace element analysis for the study of provenance of copper minerals in ancient bronzes was proved again.
