Abstract:Tremendous amount of fossil fuel is consumed in the form of low-grade waste heat (< 130 °C) due to inefficient energy utilization, and harvesting this waste heat as useful electricity contributes to mitigating the increasing energy crisis and the global greenhouse effect. Recently, compared with the past technologies (e.g. solid-state thermoelectric generator (s-TEG) and organic Rankine cycle (ORC)), liquid-based thermo-electrochemical batteries or systems feature more efficient and low cost for heat-to-electricity conversion. Among them, bimetallic thermally regenerative ammonia batteries (B-TRABs) based on redox reactions and ammonia thermal distillation that output the highest power density. However, all the existing ammonia batteries exhibit a common phenomenon that their discharge voltage curve basically has no stable platform and gradually decreases after peaking early, which is mainly due to the large pH difference between catholyte and anolyte, leading to self-discharge and severe energy decay. Here, an electrolyte decoupled strategy is proposed for a Cu/Zn-TRAB to restrain the self-discharge and enhance energy density as well as power generation at high temperatures. The self-discharge by ions cross contamination is observed visually as a colour evolution of the interlayer solution, and a transition of principal cathodic reactant from Cu(NH3)4 2+ to Cu2+ exists during discharging, which signals the beginning of performance degradation. The results demonstrate that the decoupled Cu/Zn-TRABs with double and triple-membrane designs improve the energy density by 45-50%, mainly due to the delay of transition region. With an energy density of 1034 W h m-3 obtained by a decoupled Cu/Zn-TRAB with double-membrane design, a thermoelectric conversion efficiency of 1.86% (15.6% relative to the Carnot efficiency) is achieved at a condenser temperature of 16 °C.

Abstract:Aqueous electrolyte is one of the most favored choices for various high-energy, low-cost and safe batteries. However, the undesired parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), especially on high reactive metal anodes, brought by aqueous electrolyte remains the development bottleneck of these batteries. Here, introducing solvents to manipulate the hydrogen-bond network of aqueous electrolyte is proposed to suppress the parasitic HER. Significantly, theoretical simulations and experimental characterizations demonstrate that donor number of the solvents could serve as a descriptor to ability of confining the free water and reducing the water activity. The solvent additive with high donor number exhibits remarkable suppression on the self-discharge and hydrogen evolution of Al anodes in alkaline electrolyte, which endows a flow-based Al-air battery with an outstanding energy density of 3106.04 Wh kg(-1). The findings not only provide a guidance on the rational design of aqueous electrolyte but also expand the application of high-donor solvents.

Abstract:Strengthening water (H2O) interaction is a universal strategy for reducing H2O reactivity, yet often at the expense of kinetics. Here, we unveiled the controllable modulation of molecular structures in aqueous electrolytes and their tailorable electrochemical performance in high-energy aqueous batteries. The H-bond properties and special distributions are identified as crucial parameters to decouple the electrochemical stability and the transport properties of Li+ in the aqueous-based electrolytes. It is found that the mildly solvating ethylene glycol diethyl ether (DEE) is capable of balancing both high-energy Li-ion batteries with a greatly extended electrochemical window of 1.4-5.2 V vs. Li+/Li and high ionic conductivity of 7.2 mS cm(-1) at room temperature with a low salt concentration (1.57 mol/L). LiMn2O4||Li4Ti5O12 aqueous cells deliver outstanding cycling performance over 300 cycles at 1C. One Ah pouch cell is demonstrated with a high energy density of 76.76 Wh kg(-1) at 0.2C and stable cycling performance at room temperature and a low temperature of -20 degrees C. This work provides new insights and strategies to design advanced electrolytes for rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous metal-based batteries have attracted great attention due to their high energy density and high safety. However, currently suppressing the severe parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the metal anodes in aqueous electrolytes remains challenging. Here, a novel "two birds with one stone " strategy of simultaneously reducing water activity and constructing a protective layer on Al anode with a green and low-cost glucose additive is proposed to suppress the HER. Theoretical studies and experimental characterizations confirm that the glucose additive could reduce water activity via the "molecular crowding effect " and form an organic protective layer on Al metal via chemical adsorption. The dual-functional glucose additive exhibits significant suppression on the HER and self-discharge of Al-metal anodes, which endows a flow-based Al-air battery with ultra-high specific capacity of 2886.7 mAh gAl(-1) and energy density of 3675.1 Wh kgAl(-1). This study not only blazes a new path for suppressing HER on Al-metal anodes but also casts new light on aqueous electrolyte design and the stabilization of metal anodes.
Graphene oxide modified membrane for alleviated ammonia crossover and improved electricity generation in thermally regenerative batteries

Abstract:Thermally regenerative batteries (TRBs) are promising for harvesting low-grade waste heat into electrical power. However, the ammonia crossover from anode to cathode causes self-discharge and then leads to the decay of capacity. To alleviate the ammonia crossover and improve electricity generation, a stable graphene oxide (GO) modified anion exchange membrane (AEM) was proposed. Compared with the original AEM, the GO modified AEM with a 39.5% lower ammonia permeability induces a 24.3% higher maximal power output and 20.2% higher energy density in TRBs. Together with the visualization result, it was demonstrated the ammonia crossover was effectively alleviated by GO modifying the AEM not at a cost of the reduced battery performance, indicating the promising application in future TRBs.

Understanding the Reaction Mechanism and Self-Discharge of a Bimetallic Thermally-Regenerative Ammonia Battery

Abstract:Bimetallic thermally-regenerative ammonia batteries (B-TRABs) exhibit great potential in converting low-grade waste heat into electricity due to their high power and energy densities. However, there are still key issues such as self-discharge, low anode coulombic efficiency (ACE), and side reactions in ammonia batteries, which are not well explained but have a significant impact on performance. Here, we focus on the electrode reaction mechanism and give a universal construction criterion for the bimetallic thermally-regenerative batteries. The influence of oxygen on the electrode reactions of each process is explored, and a flow Cu/Zn-TRAB is developed to verify the electrochemical analysis. The root cause for affecting the ACE and oxygen effect are examined. The generation of self-discharge and its different effects are investigated for each electrode process. In addition, the influence of initial catholyte pH and temperature are discussed thoroughly. It is proposed to use the transition potential and pH to predict the occurrence of self-discharge. The results mainly indicate that the power production can be increased by 10–20% by removing oxygen from electrolytes. The stable existence of low-valence ions (e.g., Cu(NH3)4+) and the self-corrosion of ammonia on anode metals are the two main reasons for the low ACE. The self-discharge phenomenon is more serious in the discharge process because the reduction peak potential of Cu2+ is close to that of Cu(NH3)42+. The catholyte has the strongest ability to inhibit self-discharge at 40 °C, and the self-discharge occurs when the catholyte pH rises to ≈7–8.

Abstract:Aqueous multivalent ion batteries, featured by cost-effectiveness, high safety and eco-friendliness, are considered as a preferred alternative to non-aqueous multivalent ion batteries. However, parasitic reactions at the anode (hydrogen precipitation, passivation and dendrite growth) are key factors affecting cell lifespan. Herein, we present a novel aluminum-based hydrated eutectic electrolyte (AHEE) by coupling acetamide, caprolactam, Al (OTF)3 and pure water. Characterization experiments and molecular dynamics theoretical calculations demonstrate that strong interactions between acetamide/caprolactam and water molecules/aluminum ions triggered the construction of a hydrated eutectic network, which significantly suppressed the parasitic reactions at the anode. Moreover, benefiting from the pairing of zinc anode and AHEE, the full battery exhibits high specific discharge capacity (177 mAh g(-1)) and ultra-long cycle life (18,500 cycles), providing a new technological support for high-performance aqueous multivalent ion batteries.

Abstract:In this work EG is proposed as co‐solvent in diluted NH4Ac electrolytes. Notably, full ammonium‐ion cells composed of FeHCF cathode and PTCDI anode with optimized electrolyte (H2O:EG = 5:5, volume ratio) showed improved electrochemical performance due to the inhibited side reactions such as i) HER, ii) Al corrosion, and iii) dissolution of FeHCF. Aqueous ammonium‐ion batteries (AAIBs) are considered as one of the most promising technologies for large scale energy storage applications, due to their intrinsic safety, environmental friendliness and low cost. Nevertheless, the practical application of AAIBs is impeded by hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) occurring in diluted aqueous electrolyte. Highly concentrated electrolytes can improve electrochemical stability but lead to higher costs and increased hydrolysis of NH4+. In this work ethylene glycol (EG) is proposed as co‐solvent, which can act as H‐bond modulating agent, to increase the stability of AAIBs with diluted electrolytes. The perturbation of water H‐bond network regulated by EG is proved by spectroscopic methods, while the suppressed HER is confirmed by differential electrochemical mass spectrometry (DEMS) results. As a result, full cells with 3,4,9,10‐perylenebis(dicarboximide) (PTCDI) anode and FeFe(CN)6 (FeHCF) cathode and EG‐added electrolyte exhibit stable cycling performance with capacity retention of 77% after 1950 cycles.

Abstract:Aqueous battery systems feature high safety, but they usually suffer from low voltage and low energy density, restricting their applications in large-scale storage. Here, we propose an electrolyte-decoupling strategy to maximize the full potential of Zn–MnO2 batteries by simultaneously enabling the optimal redox chemistry of both the Zn and MnO2 electrodes. The decoupled Zn–MnO2 battery exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 2.83 V (in contrast to the typical voltage of 1.5 V in conventional Zn–MnO2 batteries), as well as cyclability with only 2% capacity fading after deep cycling for 200 h. Benefiting from the full utilization of MnO2, the Zn–MnO2 battery is also able to maintain approximately 100% of its capacity at various discharge current densities. We also demonstrate the feasibility of integrating the Zn–MnO2 battery with a wind and photovoltaic hybrid power generating system. This electrolyte-decoupling strategy is shown to be applicable for other high-performance zinc-based aqueous batteries such as Zn–Cu and Zn–Ag batteries.

Abstract:A stationary and a transient two-dimensional models, based on the universal conservation laws and coupled with electrochemical reactions, are firstly applied to describe a single thermally-regenerative ammonia-based flow battery (TR-AFB), and emphasis is placed on studying the effects of reactant concentrations, physical properties of the electrolyte, flow rates and geometric parameters of flow channels on the battery performance. The model includes several experimental parameters measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV), chronoamperometry (CA) and Tafel plot. The results indicate that increasing NH3 concentration has a decisive effect on the improvement of power production and is beneficial to use higher Cu2+ concentrations, but the endurance of membrane and self-discharge need to be considered at the same time. It is also suggested that appropriately reducing the initial Cu(NH3)42+ concentration can promote power and energy densities and mitigate cyclical fluctuation. The relation between the energy and power densities is given, and the models are validated by some experimental data.

Abstract:The field of rechargeable batteries has witnessed significant advancements driven by the increasing demand for efficient and sustainable energy technologies. As a key component of rechargeable battery systems, electrolytes play a crucial role in determining the battery reversibility and stability. Nevertheless, the unsatisfactory ion conductivity and limited low-temperature behaviors of prevailing electrolytes greatly hinder the battery application scenarios. High-entropy electrolytes (HEEs) have attracted extensive attention due to their potential to solve the above issues. However, the ambiguous concept of HEEs, the lack of guidance for electrolyte component screening and optimization, and the unclear impact of HEEs on the electrode|electrolyte interface seriously impede the practical viability of HEEs. Herein, for the first time, we present a survey of emerging HEEs, spanning from design principles to performance optimization. We summarize the ion-transport mechanisms and fundamental properties of various classes of HEEs, including liquid, quasi-solid and all-solid HEEs, and review the recent advances in rechargeable alkali metal (e.g., Li and Na)-based battery and multivalent-ion (e.g., Mg and Zn) battery systems in which their performances can be intrinsically enhanced by HEEs. In particular, the interaction between the high-entropy solvation/crystal structure and battery performance is highlighted. Finally, we point out the main challenges encountered in developing batteries coupled with HEEs and provide a perspective for future breakthroughs. This review conducts a comprehensive survey of the high-entropy effect on the key properties of electrolytes. The applications of high-entropy electrolytes in various rechargeable batteries are presented to address their critical drawbacks.
Enhancing Low-Grade Thermal Energy Recovery in A Thermally Regenerative Ammonia Battery Using Elevated Temperatures

Abstract:A thermally regenerative ammonia battery (TRAB) is a new approach for converting low-grade thermal energy into electricity by using an ammonia electrolyte and copper electrodes. TRAB operation at 72 degrees C produced a power density of 236 +/- 8Wm(-2), with a linear decrease in power to 95 +/- 5Wm(-2) at 23 degrees C. The improved power at higher temperatures was due to reduced electrode overpotentials and more favorable thermodynamics for the anode reaction (copper oxidation). The energy density varied with temperature and discharge rates, with a maximum of 650Whm(-3) at a discharge energy efficiency of 54% and a temperature of 37 degrees C. The energy efficiency calculated with chemical process simulation software indicated a Carnot-based efficiency of up to 13% and an overall thermal energy recovery of 0.5%. It should be possible to substantially improve these energy recoveries through optimization of electrolyte concentrations and by using improved ion-selective membranes and energy recovery systems such as heat exchangers.
Engineering Ternary Hydrated Eutectic Electrolytes to Realize Rechargeable Cathode-free Aluminum-ion Batteries

Abstract:Aluminum-ion batteries (AIBs) have been highlighted as a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage due to the abundant reserve, low cost, high specific capacity, and good safety of aluminum. However, the development of AIBs is hindered by the usage of expensive, corrosive, and humidity-sensitive AlCl3-based ionic liquid electrolytes. Herein, we develop a low-cost, non-corrosive, and air-stable ternary hydrate eutectic electrolyte (HEE) composed of aluminum nitrate hydrate, manganese nitrate hydrate, and N,N-dimethylacetamide for cathode-free AIBs. The solvation structure of metal cations and water state in the electrolyte are regulated through the coordination of both water and N,N-dimethylacetamide molecules. The unique structural features of the HEE enables reversible deposition/stripping of AlxMnO2 on the cathodic current collector that are confirmed by various in-situ and ex-situ characterizations, ultimately realizing cathode-free AIBs. The architected cathodefree AIB delivers a discharge specific capacity of 361 mAh g- 1 and shows good cycling stability and high air stability. This study provides a valuable insight into the design of rechargeable multi-valent metal ion batteries for advanced large-scale energy storage systems.

Abstract:Ammonia crossover usually occurs in thermally regenerative ammonia-based batteries (TRABs) and significantly deteriorates the performance. In this study, the effect of ammonia crossover on the performance of TRABs and its influencing factors are studied. In addition, an ammonia-breathing thermally regenerative ammonia-based battery with an ammonia gas chamber (ATRB) is constructed by regulating the structure of the gas diffusion layer to control ammonia transfer in the anode. The results show that the cathode performance remarkably decreases with the increase of ammonia content in the cathode, and the amount of ammonia crossover increase with the rise of initial ammonia concentration, discharging current, and temperature. The visualization results show that TRAB with the ammonia diffusion layer can effectively alleviate the ammonia crossover by regulating ammonia transfer. The content of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) in the gas diffusion layer significantly influences ammonia transfer to the porous anode and the cathode. The battery performance increases firstly and decreases later with the PTFE content, and an optimal PTFE content is 20%.

Abstract:Thermally regenerative ammonia-based batteries (TRABs) are promising for harvesting low-grade waste heat and their performance is seriously limited by the general phenomenon of ammonia crossover. The feasibility of further promoting the performance of an intermediate-chamber TRAB was investigated in this work. It is highlighted that these investigations are centered around the physical properties and chemical reactions of NH3. To further enhance the alleviation of ammonia crossover, the ammonia absorption capacity of the buffer solution is very crucial. After introducing an intermediate chamber (TRAB-C) between the anode and cathode, ammonia crossover was alleviated in TRAB-C although the voltage output decreased due to the increased ohmic resistance. Concerning the intermediate chamber, the different operating conditions including flow condition, reactor placement, and electrolyte components would not only affect the ammonia crossover but also influence the electricity generation. To obtain the optimized condition, a performance evaluation criterion (PEC) was proposed to assess the electricity generation characteristic based on the maximum power density, energy density, and power generation. The results indicated that TRAB-C with flowing supporting electrolyte had the highest PEC value, suggesting the optimized design for TRABs.

Abstract:A bimetallic thermally regenerative ammonia-based battery (B-TRAB) using inexpensive materials efficiently converts low-grade thermal energy into electricity with high power density. Through thermal regeneration of the anolyte, the B-TRAB system realized high-voltage discharge (1.38 V) with redox couples [Cu(II)/Cu and Zn(NH3)(4)(2+)/Zn] and low-voltage charge (0.72 V) with Zn(II)/Zn and Cu(NH3)(4)(2+)/Cu. Adding 2 M NH3 to the anolyte of a Cu/Zn-TRAB produced a peak discharge power density of 525 W m(-2)-electrode (120 W m(-2)-membrane), and the voltage (or current) and peak power could be doubled by connecting two cells in series (or parallel). In successive regeneration cycles, a maximum power density of 115 W m(-2)-electrode (26 W m(-2)-membrane) and a net energy density of 714 W h m(-3) were produced at a constant current density of 100 A m(-2). The power density was enhanced to 515 W m(-2)-electrode (118 W m(-2)-membrane) and maintained in successive cycles by adding acid to the regenerated catholytes, with a net energy density of 299 W h m(-3) (discharged at a constant load of 12 Omega and charged at a constant current density of 100 A m(-2)). A thermal-electricity conversion efficiency of 0.95% (10.7% relative to the Carnot efficiency) was achieved.

Abstract:Ammonium-ion batteries are promising solutions for large-scale energy storage systems owing to their cost-effectiveness, safety, and sustainability. Herein, we propose an aqueous ammonium-ion battery based on an organic poly(1,5-naphthalenediamine) anode and an inorganic Prussian blue cathode in 19 M (M: mol kg−1) CH3COONH4 electrolyte. Its operation involves a reversible coordination reaction (C=N/C–N– conversion) in the anode and the NH4+ insertion/extraction reaction in the cathode, along with NH4+ acting as the charge carrier in a rocking-chair battery. Benefiting from the fast kinetics and stability of both electrodes, this aqueous ammonium-ion battery shows an excellent rate capability and long cycle stability for 500 cycles. Moreover, an energy density as high as 31.8 Wh kg−1 can be achieved, based on the total mass of the cathode and anode. Surprisingly, this aqueous ammonium-ion battery works well over a wide temperature range from −40 to 80 °C. This work will provide new opportunities to build wide-temperature aqueous batteries and broaden the horizons for large-scale energy storage systems.

Abstract:We propose an asymmetric quasi-solid electrolyte to regulate Li deposition and avoid Li dendrite formation. The thiourea in the electrolyte can absorb on the Li surface to induce Li deposition, change the propagative growth behavior of Li metal and eliminate dendritic formation, thereby ensuring excellent cycling stability and high specific capacity.
