Abstract:Broadband white-light emission in metal halides has been intensely explored because of their facile solution processability, structural adjustability, and high color rendering index. However, the most reported quantum yields for white-light emission remain low despite great efforts. Herein, we report a metal-halide layered perovskite, (HOOC4H9NH3)(2)PbBr4, showing the typical white-light emission with a highly enhan ced quantumyield up to 21.2% compared to previously reported noncarboxyl layered hybrid perovskites (0.5-9%). Notably, mechanistic studies reveal that the distinctive carboxylic acid dimers largely increase the structure rigidity and in consequence reduce the non-radiative recombination induced by stretching vibration. To the best of our knowledge, this strategy is important in hybrid perovskites, which is effective and propagable to acquire prominent photoluminescence. This work will shed light on the design of highly emissive white-light materials involving intense intermolecular interaction and promote their potential in displaying application. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites exhibiting broadband light emission are attractive as down-converting phosphors in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). Despite active exploration of new members of this family of materials, fine-tuning of their emission through structural variation for realizing high color-rendering white light remains largely untapped. Here we report a series of (100)-oriented 2D perovskites whose structures are templated by the organic cations. By controlling the tilting of the inorganic octahedra, we were able to shift the broadband emission from blue to white. A photophysical study further suggests that the coexistence of self-trapped excitons and free excitons contributes to a double-peak broad emission, covering the entire visible spectrum. Using the broad-emitting perovskites as down-converting phosphors, we fabricated WLEDs with white-light emission having a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6600 K and a high color rendering index (CRI, R-a) of 86.

Abstract:Low-dimensional organic-inorganic perovskites synergize the virtues of two unique classes of materials featuring intriguing possibilities for next-generation optoelectronics: they offer tailorable building blocks for atomically thin, layered materials while providing the enhanced light harvesting and emitting capabilities of hybrid perovskites. Here, we go beyond the paradigm that atomically thin materials require in-plane covalent bonding and report single layers of the one-dimensional organic-inorganic perovskite [C$_7$H$_{10}$N]$_3$[BiCl$_5$]Cl. Its unique 1D-2D structure enables single layers and the formation of self-trapped excitons which show white light emission. The thickness dependence of the exciton self-trapping causes an extremely strong shift of the emission energy. Thus, such two-dimensional perovskites demonstrate that already 1D covalent interactions suffice to realize atomically thin materials and provide access to unique exciton physics. These findings enable a much more general construction principle for tailoring and identifying two-dimensional materials that are no longer limited to covalently bonded 2D sheets.

Abstract:In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) hybrid lead halide perovskites based on corner-shared [PbX6] octahedrons have received extensive attention with important potentials in single-component white-light emitting diodes (WLEDs) due to the soft and distorted crystal lattices. However, limited research focused on the one-dimensional (1D) perovskites although they possess similar structural superiorities to achieve this performance. Herein, by using different types of organic amine cations as structural direction reagents, we report one new type of hybrid 1D perovskites of APbCl3 (A = (DTHPE)0.5, DMTHP, DBN) based on the same 1D face-shared octahedral [PbCl3]− chains. Upon UV light excitation, these 1D APbCl3 perovskites exhibit intrinsic broad-band bluish white-light emissions covering entire visible light spectra with the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 6.99%, which catches up with the values of previously reported 2D perovskites. Through the systematical studies of time-resolved, temperature-dependent PL emissions, theoretical calculations, and so on, these broad-band light emissions can be ascribed to the radiative transition within conjugated organic cations. Abstract:Highlights High-quality Sn 2+ /Mn 2+ -co-doped Rb 4 CdCl 6 single crystals and powders were prepared and showed high-performance dual-emission white light with near-unity photoluminescence quantum yield. Short-range and extremely strong interactions between Sn 2+ and Mn 2+ were observed that lead to an intriguing ultra-high-efficiency Dexter energy transfer process from adjacent Sn 2+ ions to Mn 2+ ions. The dual-emission intensities were tuned flexibly by varying the fractions of Sn 2+ and Sn–Mn pairs to balance their emission proportions for cold/warm white-light generation.

Abstract:A highly photoresponsive perovskite hybrid containing an electroactive organic component (H1) was fabricated. A disubstituted polyacetylene (PA) with a hidden amino functionality (P3) was synthesized, hydrolysis and quaternization of which afforded the desired PA ammonium salt (P5). Mixing P5 with lead bromide readily yielded H1, which was stable, soluble, and film-forming. The inorganic framework induced the polymer chains to align in an ordered fashion, which helped to populate the chain segments with long conjugation lengths. The hybrid emitted a blue light (457 nm) in a high quantum yield (62%), thanks to the enhanced electronic conjugation, the weakened interaction between the layer-segregated chains, and the efficient energy transfer from the inorganic sheets to the organic layers. P3 exhibited a half-discharge time as short as approximately 0.7 s, representing the first example of an efficient photoconductive disubstituted PA. While stable to normal light illumination, H1 was rapidly bleached upon exposure to high-power UV irradiation, enabling facile generation of two-dimensional luminescent photopatterns. After the UV irradiation, the emissions of P9 and P9/H12 were enhanced and weakened, respectively, proving that the inorganic perovskite framework works as a photocatalyst for accelerating the bleaching process of the conjugated PA chains.

Abstract:Lighting accounts for one-fifth of global electricity consumption1. Single materials with efficient and stable white-light emission are ideal for lighting applications, but photon emission covering the entire visible spectrum is difficult to achieve using a single material. Metal halide perovskites have outstanding emission properties2,3; however, the best-performing materials of this type contain lead and have unsatisfactory stability. Here we report a lead-free double perovskite that exhibits efficient and stable white-light emission via self-trapped excitons that originate from the Jahn–Teller distortion of the AgCl6 octahedron in the excited state. By alloying sodium cations into Cs2AgInCl6, we break the dark transition (the inversion-symmetry-induced parity-forbidden transition) by manipulating the parity of the wavefunction of the self-trapped exciton and reduce the electronic dimensionality of the semiconductor4. This leads to an increase in photoluminescence efficiency by three orders of magnitude compared to pure Cs2AgInCl6. The optimally alloyed Cs2(Ag0.60Na0.40)InCl6 with 0.04 per cent bismuth doping emits warm-white light with 86 ± 5 per cent quantum efficiency and works for over 1,000 hours. We anticipate that these results will stimulate research on single-emitter-based white-light-emitting phosphors and diodes for next-generation lighting and display technologies.

Abstract:Three new one-dimensional (1D) face-shared octahedral perovskites with unified APbBr3 composition, namely, [DTHPE]Pb2Br6 (1), [TMPDA]PbBr3 (2) and [MPD]PbBr3 (3) have been synthesized by using different types of organic cations. These 1D perovskites exhibit tunable broadband luminescence from orange to blue light emissions. Experimental and computational studies unveil that these broadband emissions are derived from the radiative recombination of self-trapped excitons due to strong electron–phonon coupling.

Abstract:White-light emission in lead halide hybrid perovskites has attracted increasing attention due to their significant applications in the field of light-emitting devices. Despite tremendous efforts, two-dimensional (2D) white-light emissive perovskites with high photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE) remain scarce. In this work, by using alkoxyamine organic cations as a template, we successfully synthesized a new 2D layered hybrid perovskite, (gamma-methoxy propyl amine)(2)PbBr4 (gamma-MPAPB), which exhibits bright bluish white-light emission with an excellent color rendering index (CRI) of 85 and a high PLQE of 6.85%. Photoluminescence measurements show a correlation between self-trapped excitons and white-light emission. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a 2D hybrid perovskite with efficient white-light emission based on alkoxyamine cations. This work emphasizes the strategy of introducing alkoxyamine cations into 2D layered hybrid perovskites to design efficient white-light emissive perovskite semiconductors.
Tailoring the high-brightness "warm" white light emission of two-dimensional perovskite crystals via a pressure-inhibited nonradiative transition

Abstract:Efficient warm white light emission is an ideal characteristic of single-component materials for light-emitting applications. Although two-dimensional hybrid perovskites are promising candidates for light-emitting diodes, as they possess broadband self-trapped emission and outstanding stability, they rarely achieve a high photoluminescence quantum yield of warm white light emissions. Here, an unusual pressure-induced warm white emission enhancement phenomenon from 2.1 GPa to 9.9 GPa was observed in two-dimensional perovskite (2meptH2)PbCl4, accompanied by a large increase in the relative quantum yield of photoluminescence. The octahedral distortions, accompanied with the evolution of organic cations, triggered the structural collapse, which caused the sudden emission enhancement at 2.1 GPa. Afterwards, the further intra-octahedral collapse promotes the formation of self-trapped excitons and the substantial suppression of nonradiative transitions are responsible for the continuous pressure-induced photoluminescence enhancement. This study not only clearly illustrates the relationship between crystal structure and photoluminescence, but also provides an experimental basis for the synthesis of high-quality warm white light-emitting 2D metal halide perovskite materials.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid low-dimensional lead halides have garnered significant interest in the realm of solid-state optical materials due to their unique properties and potential applications. In this study, we report the synthesis, characterization and application of Mn2+-doped one-dimensional (1D) [AEP]PbCl5 center dot H2O hybrid lead halide perovskites with tunable photoluminescence properties. The Mn2+ doping leads to a redshift of the dominant emission wavelength from 463 nm to 630 nm, with the optimal doping concentration resulting in an enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) from less than 1% to 8.96%. The structural and optical stability of these doped perovskites have been thoroughly investigated revealing excellent performance under humid and high-temperature conditions. Perovskite-PVP composite films exhibit high crystallization and bright orange-red emission under UV excitation. Furthermore, we demonstrate the successful fabrication of a white LED device using the Mn2+-doped perovskite in combination with commercial green and blue phosphors. The fabricated LED exhibits a high color rendering index (CRI) of 87.2 and stable electroluminescence performance under various operating currents and extended operation times. Our findings highlight the potential of Mn2+-doped 1D hybrid lead halide perovskites as efficient and stable phosphors for high-performance white light emitting diodes and other optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Cesium lead halide perovskites (CsPbX3, X = Cl, Br, and I) have emerged as an important class of color-tunable light-emitting materials in the past 4 years. However, single-CsPbX3 nanostructures with dual-color emission remain scarce. Here, we demonstrate dual-color emission from lead halide perovskite nanowires induced by the surface ligands, that is, oligomeric methoxypolyethylene glycol (MEOPEG). In addition to the characteristic emission from the host lattice, an unprecedented emission from the expanded band gap caused by MEOPEG is observed. The ratio of the two emission intensities can be easily adjusted by changing the concentration of the surface ligands. Moreover, the band gaps of CsPbX3-MEOPEG can be further fine-tuned by a simple postsynthetic anion exchange process. As a result, white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) with high-quality CIE coordinates of (0.33, 0.29) and a high color rendering index value (84) are realized. These CsPbX3-MEOPEG materials, with tunable dual-color emission, may serve as ideal model systems for WLEDs, which will undoubtedly expand the applications of cesium lead halide perovskites.

Abstract:A simple one-pot method was used to synthesize one-dimensional perovskite phosphor, which was characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The material demonstrates excellent photoluminescence properties and can emit warm white light with a color temperature of 4710 K and a color rendering index of 84.6. The simple one-pot method makes it easy to synthesize the perovskite phosphor, positioning it as a promising candidate for the production of warm white LEDs. This work provides a detailed analysis of the material's crystal structure and photoluminescence properties.

Abstract:We demonstrate a kind of perovskite/organic hybrid white electroluminescent device, where an ultrathin doping-free organic phosphorescent interlayer is embedded between a p-type hole transport layer and a n-type electron transport layer to give an organic p–i–n heterojunction unit, which is superimposed layer by layer onto a quasi-two-dimensional perovskite layer. The unique carrier transport character of the p-type hole transport layer leads to a broad carrier recombination region approaching the p–i–n heterojunction unit. As a result, pure-red emission from the perovskite layer and sky-blue emission from the organic p–i–n heterojunction were simultaneously achieved to generate white emission with a peak external quantum efficiency of 7.35%, Commission Internationale de L’Eclairage coordinates of (0.424, 0.363), and a low correlated color temperature of 2868 K. More importantly, excellent spectral stability and a greatly enhanced operating lifetime (10-fold longer than those of perovskite-only LEDs) are simultaneously achieved, providing a new path for the development of high-performance white LEDs.

Abstract:Low-dimensional hybrid perovskites have demonstrated excellent performance as white-light emitters. The broadband white emission originates from self-trapped excitons (STEs). Since the mechanism of STEs formation in perovskites is still not clear, preparing new low-dimensional white perovskites relies mostly on screening lots of intercalated organic molecules rather than rational design. Here, we report an atom-substituting strategy to trigger STEs formation in layered perovskites. Halogen-substituted phenyl molecules are applied to synthesize perovskite crystals. The halogen-substituents will withdraw electrons from the branched chain (-R-NH3+) of the phenyl molecule. This will result in positive charge accumulation on -R-NH3+, and thus stronger Coulomb force of bond (-R-NH3+)-(PbBr42-), which facilitates excitons self-trapping. Our designed white perovskites exhibit photoluminescence quantum yield of 32%, color-rendering index of near 90 and chromaticity coordinates close to standard white-light. Our joint experiment-theory study provides insights into the STEs formation in perovskites and will benefit tailoring white perovskites with boosting performance. Broad-band emission of self-trapped exciton in low-dimensional perovskite is prospective for white LED, yet rational design new white perovskite remains challenge. Abstract:In recent years, organic-inorganic hybrid lead halide perovskites have emerged as a highly promising class of light emitting diodes (LEDs) due to their diverse structures and promising properties. Herein, by choosing various organic molecules as cations, we successfully constructed a series of 1D perovskites of [PMDETA]PbBr5, [PMDETA]PbCl5, [DMPZ][MA]PbBr5, [EEDA][MA]PbCl5, [EPZ][MA]PbCl5 and [EPZ]3Pb2Br10. Under the different structural directing effects of organic cations, these 1D perovskites feature three different kinds of linear or zigzag 1D [PbX5]3− chains based on purely corner-shared octahedrons. As expected, these 1D perovskites exhibit tunable broadband light emissions from blue to yellow spectral range stemming from the self-trapped excitons based on systematical characterizations including time-resolved, temperature-dependent PL emissions and theoretical calculations. Tunable Dual Emission in Bi3+/Te4+-Doped Cs2HfCl6 Double Perovskites for White Light-Emitting Diode Applications

Abstract:Multicolor-emission-based single-phase white light derived from different luminescence centers is an effective way to manipulate the optical properties of halide perovskites. In this work, we developed a codoping strategy to incorporate Bi3+ and Te4+ emission centers into all-inorganic lead-free Cs2HfCl6 perovskite by a hydrothermal method. The as-prepared Bi3+/Te4+-doped Cs2HfCl6 microcrystals show bright blue (Bi3+), yellow (Te4+), and warm-white emissions (Bi3+/Te4+), respectively. The broad efficient dual emission in Bi3+/Te4+ co-doped Cs2HfCl6 is assigned to the typical 3P1 → 1S0 transition emission from Bi3+ originating from [BiHf + VCl] and self-trapped excitons (STEs) from Te4+. Moreover, the concentration-optimized Cs2HfCl6:Te4+ shows excellent antiwater stability and high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of ∼70%. Meanwhile, a white light-emitting diode (WLED) fabricated using Bi3+/Te4+ co-doped Cs2HfCl6 is close to warm white with a color rendering index (CRI) of 75.4, CIE color coordinate of (0.370, 0.393), and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 4380 K. These results suggest that Bi3+/Te4+ co-doped all-inorganic lead-free Cs2HfCl6 is a potential single-phase white light-emitting phosphor candidate for solid-state lightings.
