Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) hybrid perovskites exhibiting broadband light emission are attractive as down-converting phosphors in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). Despite active exploration of new members of this family of materials, fine-tuning of their emission through structural variation for realizing high color-rendering white light remains largely untapped. Here we report a series of (100)-oriented 2D perovskites whose structures are templated by the organic cations. By controlling the tilting of the inorganic octahedra, we were able to shift the broadband emission from blue to white. A photophysical study further suggests that the coexistence of self-trapped excitons and free excitons contributes to a double-peak broad emission, covering the entire visible spectrum. Using the broad-emitting perovskites as down-converting phosphors, we fabricated WLEDs with white-light emission having a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 6600 K and a high color rendering index (CRI, R-a) of 86.

Abstract:Broadband white-light emission in metal halides has been intensely explored because of their facile solution processability, structural adjustability, and high color rendering index. However, the most reported quantum yields for white-light emission remain low despite great efforts. Herein, we report a metal-halide layered perovskite, (HOOC4H9NH3)(2)PbBr4, showing the typical white-light emission with a highly enhan ced quantumyield up to 21.2% compared to previously reported noncarboxyl layered hybrid perovskites (0.5-9%). Notably, mechanistic studies reveal that the distinctive carboxylic acid dimers largely increase the structure rigidity and in consequence reduce the non-radiative recombination induced by stretching vibration. To the best of our knowledge, this strategy is important in hybrid perovskites, which is effective and propagable to acquire prominent photoluminescence. This work will shed light on the design of highly emissive white-light materials involving intense intermolecular interaction and promote their potential in displaying application. [GRAPHICS] .
Tailoring the high-brightness "warm" white light emission of two-dimensional perovskite crystals via a pressure-inhibited nonradiative transition

Abstract:Efficient warm white light emission is an ideal characteristic of single-component materials for light-emitting applications. Although two-dimensional hybrid perovskites are promising candidates for light-emitting diodes, as they possess broadband self-trapped emission and outstanding stability, they rarely achieve a high photoluminescence quantum yield of warm white light emissions. Here, an unusual pressure-induced warm white emission enhancement phenomenon from 2.1 GPa to 9.9 GPa was observed in two-dimensional perovskite (2meptH2)PbCl4, accompanied by a large increase in the relative quantum yield of photoluminescence. The octahedral distortions, accompanied with the evolution of organic cations, triggered the structural collapse, which caused the sudden emission enhancement at 2.1 GPa. Afterwards, the further intra-octahedral collapse promotes the formation of self-trapped excitons and the substantial suppression of nonradiative transitions are responsible for the continuous pressure-induced photoluminescence enhancement. This study not only clearly illustrates the relationship between crystal structure and photoluminescence, but also provides an experimental basis for the synthesis of high-quality warm white light-emitting 2D metal halide perovskite materials.

Abstract:Three new one-dimensional (1D) face-shared octahedral perovskites with unified APbBr3 composition, namely, [DTHPE]Pb2Br6 (1), [TMPDA]PbBr3 (2) and [MPD]PbBr3 (3) have been synthesized by using different types of organic cations. These 1D perovskites exhibit tunable broadband luminescence from orange to blue light emissions. Experimental and computational studies unveil that these broadband emissions are derived from the radiative recombination of self-trapped excitons due to strong electron–phonon coupling.

Abstract:Low-dimensional organic–inorganic hybrid lead halides have opened up a new frontier in single-component phosphors for white emission, which stems from self-trapped excitons (STEs), where STE states are dependent on lattice deformation, involving interactions between an inorganic skeleton and organic cations to consequently affect electron–phonon coupling. Herein, to decouple the crystal structure dominator on emission mechanisms, we employ the protonated benzimidazole as organic cations to synthesize two 100-oriented two-dimensional (2D) perovskites with Br– or Cl– as halogen anions, separately. Interestingly, even with a similar single layered crystal structure that is almost distortion-free in an inorganic octahedral framework, the two as-synthesized perovskites show distinct emission mechanisms. The underlying halogen regulatory mechanism is unveiled. In addition to changing the lattice deformation energy and self-trapping energy of STEs, the halogen substitution results in a 10-fold enhancement in electron–phonon coupling that affects STE dynamics. Therefore, this suggests a general design principle to tailor electron–phonon coupling in low-dimensional perovskites for broadband white emission.

Abstract:Low dimensional halide perovskites exhibiting broad band emission have attracted increasing attention owing to their potentiality in lighting applications. However, the relationships between the structure and luminescence properties remain unclear up to now. Here, we report a bromoplumbate organic–inorganic perovskite (C3aH)2PbBr4 (C3aH+: 3-ammonium propionic acid cation) which exists as two polymorphs at room temperature (RT): the thermodynamically stable α-phase crystallizing in the P21/n monoclinic space group and the metastable β-phase crystallizing in the P21/c monoclinic space group. α-(C3aH)2PbBr4 can be transformed into β-(C3aH)2PbBr4 by heating over 120 °C, while the reversible transformation occurs upon cooling at very low temperature (100 K) or upon a water or acetone atmosphere. Both polymorphs are built from ⟨100⟩ layered perovskites separated by the same C3aH+ cations. No out-of-plane distortion of perovskite layers is observed in both structures; but strong in-plane distortions with regular PbBr6 octahedra are observed in the β-phase, whereas the α-phase exhibits strongly distorted PbBr6 revealing the 6s2 lone pair stereoactivity. Interestingly, β-(C3aH)2PbBr4 exhibits a narrow emission band (blue emission), whereas α-(C3aH)2PbBr4 exhibits both narrow and broad bands (whitish emission). The existence of two perovskite polymorphs with different emission properties at a given temperature not only allows the establishment of structure–property relationships but also demonstrates that α-(C3aH)2PbBr4 can act as a room temperature luminescence switchable material.

Abstract:Lighting accounts for one-fifth of global electricity consumption1. Single materials with efficient and stable white-light emission are ideal for lighting applications, but photon emission covering the entire visible spectrum is difficult to achieve using a single material. Metal halide perovskites have outstanding emission properties2,3; however, the best-performing materials of this type contain lead and have unsatisfactory stability. Here we report a lead-free double perovskite that exhibits efficient and stable white-light emission via self-trapped excitons that originate from the Jahn–Teller distortion of the AgCl6 octahedron in the excited state. By alloying sodium cations into Cs2AgInCl6, we break the dark transition (the inversion-symmetry-induced parity-forbidden transition) by manipulating the parity of the wavefunction of the self-trapped exciton and reduce the electronic dimensionality of the semiconductor4. This leads to an increase in photoluminescence efficiency by three orders of magnitude compared to pure Cs2AgInCl6. The optimally alloyed Cs2(Ag0.60Na0.40)InCl6 with 0.04 per cent bismuth doping emits warm-white light with 86 ± 5 per cent quantum efficiency and works for over 1,000 hours. We anticipate that these results will stimulate research on single-emitter-based white-light-emitting phosphors and diodes for next-generation lighting and display technologies.

Abstract:Herein, we reported two new 2D perovskites of [DAPMA]2Pb3X12·2H2O (X = Cl (1), Br (2), DAPMA = N,N-Bis(3-aminopropyl)methylamine) containing special 2D [Pb3X12]6− layers formed by mixed corner- and edge-shared [PbX6] octahedrons. Both compounds 1 and 2 exhibit broadband yellow light emissions with promising photoluminescence quantum yields of 4.84% and 3.02%, respectively. According to detailed spectroscopy characterizations, the broadband light emissions should originate from self-trapped excitons (STEs). In addition, these 2D perovskites can be fabricated as white LEDs with highest color rendering index of 96.3%. This work provides a new type of structural model to probe into the relationship between luminescence behavior and structure.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) perovskites with general formula $APbX_4$ are attracting increasing interest as solution processable, white-light emissive materials. Recent studies have shown that their broadband emission is related to the formation of intra-gap color centers; however, the nature and dynamics of the emissive species have remained elusive. Here we show that the broadband photoluminescence of the 2D perovskites $(EDBE)PbCl_4$ and $(EDBE)PbBr_4$ stems from the localization of small polarons within the lattice distortion field. Using a combination of spectroscopic techniques and first-principles calculations, we infer the formation of ${Pb_2}^{3+}$, $Pb^{3+}$, and ${X_2}^-$ (where X=Cl or Br) species confined within the inorganic perovskite framework. Due to strong Coulombic interactions, these species retain their original excitonic character and form self-trapped polaron-excitons acting as radiative color centers. These findings are expected to be applicable to a broad class of white-light emitting perovskites with large polaron relaxation energy.

Abstract:Low-dimensional hybrid perovskites have demonstrated excellent performance as white-light emitters. The broadband white emission originates from self-trapped excitons (STEs). Since the mechanism of STEs formation in perovskites is still not clear, preparing new low-dimensional white perovskites relies mostly on screening lots of intercalated organic molecules rather than rational design. Here, we report an atom-substituting strategy to trigger STEs formation in layered perovskites. Halogen-substituted phenyl molecules are applied to synthesize perovskite crystals. The halogen-substituents will withdraw electrons from the branched chain (-R-NH3+) of the phenyl molecule. This will result in positive charge accumulation on -R-NH3+, and thus stronger Coulomb force of bond (-R-NH3+)-(PbBr42-), which facilitates excitons self-trapping. Our designed white perovskites exhibit photoluminescence quantum yield of 32%, color-rendering index of near 90 and chromaticity coordinates close to standard white-light. Our joint experiment-theory study provides insights into the STEs formation in perovskites and will benefit tailoring white perovskites with boosting performance. Broad-band emission of self-trapped exciton in low-dimensional perovskite is prospective for white LED, yet rational design new white perovskite remains challenge. Abstract:The engineering of tunable photoluminescence (PL) in single materials with a full-spectrum emission represents a highly coveted objective but poses a formidable challenge. In this context, the realization of near-full-spectrum PL emission, spanning the visible light range from 424 to 620 nm, in a single-component two-dimensional (2D) hybrid lead halide perovskite, (ETA)2PbBr4 (ETA+ = (HO)(CH2)2NH3+), is reported, achieved through high-pressure treatment. A pressure-induced phase transition occurs upon compression, transforming the crystal structure from an orthorhombic phase under ambient conditions to a monoclinic structure at high pressure. This phase transition driven by the adaptive and dynamic configuration changes of organic amine cations enables an effective and continuous narrowing of the bandgap in this halide crystal. The hydrogen bonding interactions between inorganic layers and organic amine cations (N-H...Br and O-H...Br hydrogen bonds) efficiently modulate the organic amine cations penetration and the octahedral distortion. Consequently, this phenomenon induces a phase transition and results in red-shifted PL emissions, leading to the near-full-spectrum emission. This work opens a possibility for achieving wide PL emissions with coverage across the visible light spectrum by employing high pressure in single halide perovskites.

Abstract:White-light emission (WLE) materials based on organic-inorganic hybrid Lead halides have drawn considerable attentions, because of its applications in light-emission equipments. Despite considerable efforts, there is still a lack of two-dimensional (2D) lead-chlorine white-light emitting halides with high photoluminescence quantum efficiency (PLQE). Herein, we report the preparation of [DTHPE]Pb4Cl10 a new 2D layered hybrid halide, which exhibits bright wide-band WLE, a high PLQE of 8.86% and highly anti-water stability. The PLQE of [DTHPE]Pb4Cl10 exceeds that of most 2D lead-chlorine halides reported so far, and the white light emission intensity of which hardly changed even after immersion in water for 7 days. Photoluminescence measurements indicate that the WLE originates from self-trapped excitons. [DTHPE]Pb4Cl10 is a promising visible-blind UV hybrid halide owing to its excellent photoelectric response, and also an effective white-light emitting material for display applications. The coexistence of high performance visible-blind UV response and high efficiency white-light emission provides attractive possibility for the potential applications in multifunctional photoelectronic field.

Abstract:Low-dimensional lead halide perovskites with broadband emission hold great promise for single-component white-light-emitting (WLE) devices. The origin of their broadband emission has been commonly attributed to self-trapped excitons (STEs) composed of localized electronic polarization with a distorted lattice. Unfortunately, the exact electronic and structural nature of the STE species in these WLE materials remains elusive, hindering the rational design of high-efficiency WLE materials. In this study, by combining ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy and ab initio calculations, we uncover surprisingly similar STE features in two prototypical low dimensional WLE perovskite single crystals: 1D (DMEDA)PbBr4 and 2D (EDBE)PbBr4, despite of their different dimensionalities. Photoexcited excitons rapidly localize to intrinsic STEs within ∼250 fs, contributing to the white light emission. Crucially, STEs in both systems exhibit characteristic absorption features akin to those of Pb+ and Pb3+. Further atomic level theoretical simulations confirm photoexcited electrons and holes are localized on the Pb2+ site to form Pb+- and Pb3+-like species, resembling transient photoinduced Pb2+ disproportionation. This study provides conclusive evidence on the key excited state species for exciton self-trapping and broadband emission in low dimensional lead halide WLE perovskites and paves the way for the rational design of high-efficiency WLE materials.

Abstract:In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) hybrid lead halide perovskites based on corner-shared [PbX6] octahedrons have received extensive attention with important potentials in single-component white-light emitting diodes (WLEDs) due to the soft and distorted crystal lattices. However, limited research focused on the one-dimensional (1D) perovskites although they possess similar structural superiorities to achieve this performance. Herein, by using different types of organic amine cations as structural direction reagents, we report one new type of hybrid 1D perovskites of APbCl3 (A = (DTHPE)0.5, DMTHP, DBN) based on the same 1D face-shared octahedral [PbCl3]− chains. Upon UV light excitation, these 1D APbCl3 perovskites exhibit intrinsic broad-band bluish white-light emissions covering entire visible light spectra with the highest photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 6.99%, which catches up with the values of previously reported 2D perovskites. Through the systematical studies of time-resolved, temperature-dependent PL emissions, theoretical calculations, and so on, these broad-band light emissions can be ascribed to the radiative transition within conjugated organic cations. Abstract:The low-dimensional organic-inorganic halide perovskites with self-trapped exciton emission have promising prospects for single-phase white-light emitters. However, so far, these broadband white-light-emitting (BWLE) perovskites were synthesized by trial-and-error testing spacing molecules. Here, we developed a steric hindrance regulation strategy to predictably synthesize BWLE perovskites. The molecules containing C–C(–NH 2 )–C groups were introduced into low-dimensional perovskites, which brings a large steric hindrance in-plane orientation. The bigger C–C(–NH 2 )–C bond angle would induce larger structural distortion in perovskites, which leads to the higher rate of self-trapping of excitons and the deeper self-trapping depth. The photoluminescence spectra of the synthesized perovskites can cover the cool-to-warm white light region. Overall, we fabricated a material library consisting of 40 kinds of BWLE compounds according to this strategy. Our findings develop a general strategy to synthesize BWLE perovskites and offer a material platform for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Luminescent ferroelectrics have attracted considerable attention in terms of integrated photoelectronic devices, most of which are focused on the multicomponent systems of rare‐earth doping ferroelectric ceramics. However, bulk ferroelectricity with coexistence of strong white‐light emission, especially in the single‐component system, remains quite rare. Here, a new organic–inorganic hybrid ferroelectric of (C4H9NH3)2PbCl4 (1) is reported, adopting a 2D layered perovskite architecture, which exhibits an unprecedented coexistence of notable ferroelectricity and intrinsic white‐light emission. Decent above‐room‐temperature spontaneous polarization of ≈2.1 µC cm−2 is confirmed for 1. Particularly, it also exhibits brilliant broadband white‐light emission with a high color‐rendering‐index up to 86 under UV excitation. Structural analyses indicate that ferroelectricity of 1 originates from molecular reorientation of dynamic organic cations, as well as significant structural distortion of PbCl6 octahedra that also contribute to its white‐light emission. This work paves an avenue to design new hybrid ferroelectrics for multifunctional application in the photoelectronic field. A 2D organic–inorganic perovskite ferroelectric (C4H9NH3)2PbCl4 is prepared, which exhibits unprecedented coexistence of strong spontaneous polarization and intriguing white‐light emission.

Abstract:The pressure induced emission (PIE) behavior of halide perovskites has attracted extensive interest due to its potential application in pressure sensors and trademark security. However, the PIE phenomenon of white-light-emitting hybrid perovskites (WHPs) is rare, and that at pressures above 10.0 GPa has never been reported. Here, we effectively adjusted the perovskite to emit high-quality "cold" or "warm" white light and successfully realized pressure-induced emission (PIE) upon even higher pressure up to 35.1 GPa in one-dimensional halide perovskite C4N2H14PbCl4. We reveal that the degree of structural distortion and the rearrangement of the multiple self-trapped states position are consistent with the intriguing photoluminescence variation, which is further supported by in situ high-pressure synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments and time-resolved photoluminescence decay dynamics data. The underlying relationship between octahedron behavior and emission plays a key role to obtain high-quality white emission perovskites. We anticipate that this work enhances our understanding of structure-dependent self-trapped exciton (STE) emission characteristics and stimulates the design of high-performance WHPs for next generation white LED lighting devices.
