Abstract:Within the framework of second-order Rayleigh-Schrodinger perturbation theory, the effects of the interaction of the electrons and longitudinal optical phonons in low-dimensional semiconducting heterostructures can be investigated in a unified way. As a result, the ground-state energy for polarons confined in a general potential can be explicitly expressed as a one-dimensional integral. Moreover, some interesting problems, such as those of polarons in quantum wells, quantum wires, and quantum dots, can be readily addressed just by taking different limits. Finally, in a general sense, it is shown on the basis of numerical calculations that the polaronic effect is enhanced with lowering dimensionality and increasing asymmetry.

Abstract:Moire engineering as a configuration method to twist van der Waals materials has delivered a series of advances in electronics, magnetics and optics. Yet these advances stem from peculiar moire superlattices which form at small specific twisting angles. Here we report the configuration of nanoscale light-matter waves-the polaritons-by twisting stacked $\alpha$-phase molybdenum trioxide $\alpha$-MoO3 slabs in the broad range of 0$^o$ to 90$^o$. Our combined experimental and theoretical results reveal a variety of polariton wavefront geometry and topological transitions via the twisting. The polariton twisting configuration is attributed to the electromagnetic interaction of highly anisotropic hyperbolic polaritons in stacked $\alpha$-MoO3 slabs. The nano-polaritons demonstrated in twisted $\alpha$-MoO3 hold the promise as tailored nano-light for on-demand nanophotonic functionalities.

Abstract:The original version of this Article contained errors in the second sentence in the legend of Fig. 1, which incorrectly read 'These two elastic insulators are identical in lattice constant a (3a0), plate thickness (0.4a0), and radius of perforated holes r (0.18a0) but different hole-center distance characterized by b.' The correct version states 'plate thickness (√3 × 0.4a0)' in place of 'plate thickness (0.4a0)' and 'radius of perforated holes r (√3 × 0.18a0)' rather than 'radius of perforated holes r (0.18a0)'.The first sentence of the 'Sample preparation' section of the Methods originally incorrectly read 'Our samples are prepared exclusively on polished stainless-steel plates (Type 201, mass density 7803 kg m-3) with a fixed plate thickness 7.82 mm.' Abstract:As one of the most effective manipulation means to control the physical properties of two-dimensional van der Waals stacking materials, the twisted angle periodically regulates the interlayer interaction potential by generating moiré patterns. The decrease in Brillouin zone size and the change of high symmetry direction caused by the interlayer twisted angle lead to the emergence of the hybrid folded phonons—moiré phonons, which have noticeable impacts on phonon properties. This paper reviews the recent developments and discoveries on phonon properties in twisted two-dimensional stacking homogeneous and heterogeneous systems and focuses on the impacts of the interlayer twisted angle on phonon dispersion, such as interlayer coupling phonon modes and moiré phonons. Meanwhile, we introduced the recent research on the influence of the interlayer twisted angle on phonon transport behavior along the in-plane and out-of-plane directions. In addition, the theoretical and experimental open questions and challenges faced in the phonon characteristics of twisted two-dimensional materials are discussed, and some possible solutions are put forward.

Abstract:2D van der Waals (vdW) layered polar crystals sustaining phonon polaritons (PhPs) have opened up new avenues for fundamental research and optoelectronic applications in the mid-infrared to terahertz ranges. To date, 2D vdW crystals with PhPs are only experimentally demonstrated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) slabs. For optoelectronic and active photonic applications, semiconductors with tunable charges, finite conductivity, and moderate bandgaps are preferred. Here, PhPs are demonstrated with low loss and ultrahigh electromagnetic field confinements in semiconducting vdW alpha-MoO3. The alpha-MoO3 supports strong hyperbolic PhPs in the mid-infrared range, with a damping rate as low as 0.08. The electromagnetic confinements can reach approximate to lambda 0/120, which can be tailored by altering the thicknesses of the alpha-MoO3 2D flakes. Furthermore, spatial control over the PhPs is achieved with a metal-ion-intercalation strategy. The results demonstrate alpha-MoO3 as a new platform for studying hyperbolic PhPs with tunability, which enable switchable mid-infrared nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:Excitons in twisted bilayers of transition metal dichalcogenides have strongly modified dispersion relations due to the formation of periodic moiré potentials. The strong coupling to a light field in an optical cavity leads to the appearance of moiré polaritons. In this paper, we derive a theoretical model for the linear absorption spectrum of the coupled moiré polariton-phonon system based on the time-convolutionless (TCL) approach. Results obtained by numerically solving the TCL equation are compared to those obtained in the Markovian limit and from a perturbative treatment of non-Markovian corrections. A key quantity for the interpretation of the findings is the generalized phonon spectral density. We discuss the phonon impact on the spectrum for realistic moiré exciton dispersions by varying twist angle and temperature. Key features introduced by the coupling to phonons are broadenings and energy shifts of the upper and lower polariton peak and the appearance of phonon sidebands between them. We analyze these features with respect to the role of Markovian and non-Markovian effects and find that they strongly depend on the twist angle. We can distinguish between the regimes of large, small, and intermediate twist angles. In the latter phonon effects are particularly pronounced due to dominating phonon transitions into regions which are characterized by van Hove singularities in the density of states.

Abstract:Displacement fields are one of the main tuning knobs employed to engineer flat electronic band dispersions in twisted van der Waals multilayers. Here, we show that electric fields can also be used to tune the phonon dispersion of moiré superlattices formed by non-centrosymmetric materials, focusing on twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers. This effect arises from the intertwining between the local stacking configuration and the formation of polar domains within the moiré supercell. For small twist angles, increasing the electric field leads to a universal moiré phonon spectrum characterized by a substantially softened longitudinal acoustic phason mode and a flat optical phonon mode, both of which cause a significant enhancement in the vibrational density of states. The phasons also acquire a prominent chiral character, displaying a nonzero angular momentum spread across the Brillouin zone. We discuss how the tunability of the moiré phonon spectra may affect electronic properties, focusing on the recently discovered phenomenon of van der Waals ferroelectricity.

Abstract:The recent discovery of in‐plane hyperbolic phonon polaritons in biaxial polar crystal—α‐MoO3, has aroused a huge research upsurge on anisotropic photonic quasiparticles in van der Waals materials. The physical origin of these highly anisotropic phonon polaritons is attributed to the strong anisotropy of crystal phonons. However, the orientation‐dependent phonon modes have not been fully understood from crystallographic point of view. This work systematically performs in situ angle‐resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy on α‐MoO3 to investigate its anisotropic photo‐phonon interactions. The sample orientation and Raman tensors are unambiguously determined under different polarization configurations. Specifically, the in‐plane anisotropic phonon modes of α‐MoO3 can be well characterized from the highly polarization‐dependent Raman‐active modes with periodic intensity variation. It can be concluded that these findings cannot only offer a better understanding of anisotropic phonon modes in α‐MoO3, but also provide a valuable reference for other anisotropic van der Waals crystals. The physical origin of natural anisotropic phonon polaritons in α‐MoO3 is attributed to its highly anisotropic optical phonon modes. In this work, the in situ angle‐resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy is systematically performed on α‐MoO3 for investigating its anisotropic photo‐phonon interactions. The results can help us to better understand the correlation between anisotropic phonon behaviors and optical anisotropy of α‐MoO3.
