Abstract:Resonances play a key role in the practical application of polaritons because they can be easily detected from the far field and integrated with various devices. Although the mechanism and implementation of polariton resonances have been studied extensively, the resonant behaviors of in-plane anisotropic polaritons and their tuning strategies remain largely unexplored so far. Here, using in-plane hyperbolic phonon polaritons in α-MoO3 as an example, we analyze their resonant absorption upon multiple conditions theoretically. We unveil the collective resonant mode originating from synergistic Fabry−Pérot cavity resonances and Bragg resonances. Beyond controlling polarizations and geometries, active tuning of resonant absorption is further achieved by rotating resonators or changing polariton topologies. Our results bridge the gap between polariton dispersions and resonant absorption, and provide a bottom-up strategy for the design of polariton-based resonators, photonic crystals, and metasurfaces. The resonant structures proposed here could serve as versatile building blocks for infrared absorbers, polarization detectors, sensors, modulators, and other photonic devices.

Abstract:Highly confined and low‐loss hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) sustained in van der Waals crystals exhibit outstanding potential to concentrate the long‐wave electromagnetic fields deep into the subwavelength region. However, precise tuning on the HPhP propagation characteristics is a critical challenge to facilitate its practical applications in nanophotonic devices and circuits. This study, by taking advantage of the varying air gaps in a suspended van der Waals α‐MoO3 crystal, shows the feasibility to tune wavelength and damping rate of the HPhPs propagating inside the α‐MoO3. The results indicate that the dependence of polariton wavelength on the gap distance for HPhPs in lower and upper Reststrahlen bands contradict each other. Most interestingly, the tuning range of the polariton wavelengths for HPhPs in the lower band, which exhibits in‐plane hyperbolicity, is wider than that for HPhPs in the upper band which exhibits out‐of‐plane hyperbolicity. A polariton wavelength elongation of up to 160% and a reduction in the damping rate up to 35% is recorded. These findings can not only provide fundamental insight into the nanoscale manipulation of light by polaritonic crystals, but also open up new opportunities for tunable nanophotonic applications. The wavelengths and dampings of the hyperbolic phonon polaritons can be tuned by taking advantage of the varying air gaps in a suspended van der Waals α‐MoO3 crystal. Abstract:2D van der Waals (vdW) layered polar crystals sustaining phonon polaritons (PhPs) have opened up new avenues for fundamental research and optoelectronic applications in the mid-infrared to terahertz ranges. To date, 2D vdW crystals with PhPs are only experimentally demonstrated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) slabs. For optoelectronic and active photonic applications, semiconductors with tunable charges, finite conductivity, and moderate bandgaps are preferred. Here, PhPs are demonstrated with low loss and ultrahigh electromagnetic field confinements in semiconducting vdW alpha-MoO3. The alpha-MoO3 supports strong hyperbolic PhPs in the mid-infrared range, with a damping rate as low as 0.08. The electromagnetic confinements can reach approximate to lambda 0/120, which can be tailored by altering the thicknesses of the alpha-MoO3 2D flakes. Furthermore, spatial control over the PhPs is achieved with a metal-ion-intercalation strategy. The results demonstrate alpha-MoO3 as a new platform for studying hyperbolic PhPs with tunability, which enable switchable mid-infrared nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:Polaritons—hybrid light–matter excitations—enable nanoscale control of light. Particularly large polariton field confinement and long lifetimes can be found in graphene and materials consisting of two-dimensional layers bound by weak van der Waals forces1,2 (vdW materials). These polaritons can be tuned by electric fields3,4 or by material thickness5, leading to applications including nanolasers6, tunable infrared and terahertz detectors7, and molecular sensors8. Polaritons with anisotropic propagation along the surface of vdW materials have been predicted, caused by in-plane anisotropic structural and electronic properties9. In such materials, elliptic and hyperbolic in-plane polariton dispersion can be expected (for example, plasmon polaritons in black phosphorus9), the latter leading to an enhanced density of optical states and ray-like directional propagation along the surface. However, observation of anisotropic polariton propagation in natural materials has so far remained elusive. Here we report anisotropic polariton propagation along the surface of α-MoO3, a natural vdW material. By infrared nano-imaging and nano-spectroscopy of semiconducting α-MoO3 flakes and disks, we visualize and verify phonon polaritons with elliptic and hyperbolic in-plane dispersion, and with wavelengths (up to 60 times smaller than the corresponding photon wavelengths) comparable to those of graphene plasmon polaritons and boron nitride phonon polaritons3–5. From signal oscillations in real-space images we measure polariton amplitude lifetimes of 8 picoseconds, which is more than ten times larger than that of graphene plasmon polaritons at room temperature10. They are also a factor of about four larger than the best values so far reported for phonon polaritons in isotopically engineered boron nitride11 and for graphene plasmon polaritons at low temperatures12. In-plane anisotropic and ultra-low-loss polaritons in vdW materials could enable directional and strong light–matter interactions, nanoscale directional energy transfer and integrated flat optics in applications ranging from bio-sensing to quantum nanophotonics.

High- Q Phonon-polaritons in Spatially Confined Freestanding α-MoO 3

Abstract:Highly confined and in-plane anisotropic phonon-polaritons (PhPs) in orthorhombic-phase molybdenum trioxide (α-MoO3) exist in three Reststrahlen bands (RB) in the mid-infrared regime where the crystal exhibits negative permittivity along three principal axes. However, PhP behaviors in geometrically confined α-MoO3 remain enigmatic. Here, we investigated PhPs confined in freestanding α-MoO3 covering submicron-width trenches. We remarkably observed opposite trends in terms of PhP wavelengths in two RBs for PhPs propagating on supported and spatially confined freestanding α-MoO3. Due to the geometric confinement in the submicron α-MoO3 freestanding channel, we resolved ultraconfined PhPs with the record-high quality (Q) factor of up to 40 at room temperature, 2 times higher than the previously reported highest value in α-MoO3. We further demonstrated PhPs guiding along a curved trajectory and, for the first time, proved PhPs could be guided to desired angles within spatially confined freestanding α-MoO3 channels. The outcomes of this work can be exploited for creating high-Q PhP waveguides toward directional nanophotonic and polaritonic devices.

Abstract:Studies of the geometrical launching and propagating properties of polaritons are essential for advanced nanophotonic applications. Using a photon‐induced force microscope over a broad spectral coverage in the mid‐infrared, various styles of near‐field patterns are explored in α‐MoO3 upon a holey microcavity in its three Reststrahlen bands. A model based on elliptic‐resonance cone with the orthogonal polariton momenta is employed to explain these phenomena. Anisotropic hyperbolic phonon‐polaritons (HPhPs) in a van der Waals material, orthorhombic‐phase molybdenum trioxide (α‐MoO3), provide strategies in multiple dimensions to manipulate photons at the nanoscale. However, the nano‐imaging studies of the in‐plane HPhPs along orthogonal crystal orientations are still rare. In this work, the launching and propagating properties of HPhPs are studied in α‐MoO3 upon a holey silicon nitride microcavity through a photon‐induced force microscope (PiFM) over a broad tunable mid‐infrared region of 780–1010 cm−1. Near‐field patterns stemming from the orthogonal polariton momenta are observed in this spectral band. A simple model based on the geometrical optics of elliptic resonance cones is used to explain the near‐field phonon‐polariton features. These near‐field optical properties indicate abundantly possible operations and applications for nanophotonics.

Low-loss twist-tunable in-plane anisotropic polaritonic crystals

Abstract:Van der Waals (vdW) materials supporting phonon polaritons (PhPs) - light coupled to lattice vibrations - have gathered significant interest because of their intrinsic anisotropy and low losses. In particular, $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ supports PhPs with in-plane anisotropic propagation, which has been exploited to tune the optical response of twisted bilayers and trilayers. Additionally, various studies have explored the realization of polaritonic crystals (PCs) - lattices with periods comparable to the polariton wavelength -. PCs consisting of hole arrays etched in $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ slabs exhibit Bragg resonances dependent on the angle between the crystallographic axes and the lattice vectors. However, such PC concept, with a fixed orientation and size of its geometrical parameters, constrains practical applications and introduces additional scattering losses due to invasive fabrication processes. Here we demonstrate a novel PC concept that overcomes these limitations, enabling low-loss optical tuning. It comprises a rotatable pristine $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ layer located on a periodic hole array fabricated in a metallic layer. Our design prevents degradation of the $\alpha$-MoO$_3$ optical properties caused by fabrication, preserving its intrinsic low-loss and in-plane anisotropic propagation of PhPs. The resulting PC exhibits rotation of the Bloch modes, which is experimentally visualized by scanning near-field microscopy. In addition, we experimentally determine the polaritons momentum and reconstruct their band structure. These results pave the way for mechanically tunable nanooptical components based on polaritons for potential lasing, sensing, or energy harvesting applications.

Electrical manipulation of plasmon-phonon polaritons in heterostructures of graphene on biaxial crystals

Abstract: Phonon polaritons in natural anisotropic crystals hold great promise for infrared nano-optics. However, the direct electrical control of these polaritons is difficult, preventing the development of active polaritonic devices. Here we propose the heterostructures of graphene on a biaxial crystal ({\alpha}-phase molybdenum trioxide) slab and theoretically study the hybridized plasmon-phonon polaritons with dependence on the Fermi level of graphene from three aspects: dispersion relationships, iso-frequency contours, and the quantum spin Hall effects. We demonstrate the distinct wavelength tunability of the plasmon-phonon polaritons modes and the optical topologic transitions from open (hyperbolic) to closed (bow-tie-like) iso-frequency contours as the increase of the Fermi level of graphene. Furthermore, we observe the tunable quantum spin Hall effects of the plasmon-phonon polaritons, manifesting propagation direction switching by the Fermi level tuning of the graphene. Our findings open opportunities for novel electrically tunable polaritonic devices and programmable quantum optical networks.

Abstract:Advanced control over the excitation of ultraconfined polaritons—hybrid light and matter waves—empowers unique opportunities for many nanophotonic functionalities, e.g., on-chip circuits, quantum information processing, and controlling thermal radiation. Recent work has shown that highly asymmetric polaritons are directly governed by asymmetries in crystal structures. Here, we experimentally demonstrate extremely asymmetric and unidirectional phonon polariton (PhP) excitation via directly patterning high-symmetry orthorhombic van der Waals (vdW) crystal α-MoO 3 . This phenomenon results from symmetry breaking of momentum matching in polaritonic diffraction in vdW materials. We show that the propagation of PhPs can be versatile and robustly tailored via structural engineering, while PhPs in low-symmetry (e.g., monoclinic and triclinic) crystals are largely restricted by their naturally occurring permittivities. Our work synergizes grating diffraction phenomena with the extreme anisotropy of high-symmetry vdW materials, enabling unexpected control of infrared polaritons along different pathways and opening opportunities for applications ranging from on-chip photonics to directional heat dissipation.

Abstract:Moire engineering as a configuration method to twist van der Waals materials has delivered a series of advances in electronics, magnetics and optics. Yet these advances stem from peculiar moire superlattices which form at small specific twisting angles. Here we report the configuration of nanoscale light-matter waves-the polaritons-by twisting stacked $\alpha$-phase molybdenum trioxide $\alpha$-MoO3 slabs in the broad range of 0$^o$ to 90$^o$. Our combined experimental and theoretical results reveal a variety of polariton wavefront geometry and topological transitions via the twisting. The polariton twisting configuration is attributed to the electromagnetic interaction of highly anisotropic hyperbolic polaritons in stacked $\alpha$-MoO3 slabs. The nano-polaritons demonstrated in twisted $\alpha$-MoO3 hold the promise as tailored nano-light for on-demand nanophotonic functionalities.

Abstract:In-plane Hyperbolic Phonon polaritons (HPhPs) are quasiparticles formed via coupling of photons and optical phonons in in-plane hyperbolic materials and offer unique applications in sensing, thermal emitters and high resolution imaging. However, the large momentum mismatch between photons and these in-plane HPhPs has restricted their technological potential as most experimental demonstration rely on sophisticated and expensive near field detection schemes. In this work, using the example of $\alpha-$MoO$_3$, we demonstrate that by constructing photonic hypercrystals of this material, one can not only excite these in-plane HPhPs in the far field but also tune the far field response via twisting the hypercrystal lattice with respect the lattice of $\alpha-$MoO$_3$. Our findings will pave the way for the development of practical in-plane HPhP devices as well as provide access to new fundamental physics of such materials via conventional and well developed far field measurement techniques.

Fundamentals of polaritons in strongly anisotropic thin crystal layers

Abstract:Polaritons in strongly anisotropic thin layers have recently captured the attention in nanophotonics because of their directional propagation at the nanoscale, which offers unique possibilities for nanooptical applications. However, exploiting the full potential of anisotropic polaritons requires a thorough understanding of their properties, including field confinement, energy and phase propagation direction and losses. Here we fill this critical gap by providing fundamental insights into the propagation of anisotropic polaritons in thin biaxial layers. In particular, we introduce a novel methodology that allows us to represent isofrequency curves of polaritons in strongly anisotropic materials considering that the real and imaginary parts of the wavevector are not parallel. In fact, we analytically show that the direction of the imaginary part of the wavevector is parallel to the group velocity, which can have different, even perpendicular or opposite, directions with respect to the phase velocity. This finding is crucial for understanding polaritonic phenomena in anisotropic media, yet it has so far been widely overlooked in the literature. Additionally, we introduce a criterion for classifying the polaritonic modes in biaxial layers into volume and surface categories, and analyze their dispersion, field structure, and losses. Finally, we discover the existence of anisotropic transverse electric modes, which can exhibit natural canalization. Taken together, our results shed light on hitherto unexplored areas of the theory of electromagnetic modes in thin biaxial layers. Although exemplified for van der Waals MoO3 layers, our findings are general for polaritons in other strongly anisotropic biaxial hyperbolic crystals.

Abstract:Polaritons in anisotropic materials result in exotic optical features, which can provide opportunities to control light at the nanoscale1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. So far these polaritons have been limited to two classes: bulk polaritons, which propagate inside a material, and surface polaritons, which decay exponentially away from an interface. Here we report a near-field observation of ghost phonon polaritons, which propagate with in-plane hyperbolic dispersion on the surface of a polar uniaxial crystal and, at the same time, exhibit oblique wavefronts in the bulk. Ghost polaritons are an atypical non-uniform surface wave solution of Maxwell's equations, arising at the surface of uniaxial materials in which the optic axis is slanted with respect to the interface. They exhibit an unusual bi-state nature, being both propagating (phase-progressing) and evanescent (decaying) within the crystal bulk, in contrast to conventional surface waves that are purely evanescent away from the interface. Our real-space near-field imaging experiments reveal long-distance (over 20 micrometres), ray-like propagation of deeply subwavelength ghost polaritons across the surface, verifying long-range, directional and diffraction-less polariton propagation. At the same time, we show that control of the out-of-plane angle of the optic axis enables hyperbolic-to-elliptic topological transitions at fixed frequency, providing a route to tailor the band diagram topology of surface polariton waves. Our results demonstrate a polaritonic wave phenomenon with unique opportunities to tailor nanoscale light in natural anisotropic crystals.

Abstract:Phonon polaritons (PhPs) exhibit directional in-plane propagation and ultralow losses in van der Waals (vdW) crystals, offering new possibilities for controlling the flow of light at the nanoscale. However, these PhPs, including their directional propagation, are inherently determined by the anisotropic crystal structure of the host materials. Although in-plane anisotropic PhPs can be manipulated by twisting engineering, such as twisting individual vdW slabs, dynamically adjusting their propagation presents a significant challenge. The limited application of the twisted bilayer structure in bare films further restricts its usage. In this study, we present a technique in which anisotropic PhPs supported by bare biaxial vdW slabs can be actively tuned by modifying their local dielectric environment. Excitingly, we predict that the iso-frequency contour of PhPs can be reoriented to enable propagation along forbidden directions when the crystal is placed on a substrate with a moderate negative permittivity. Besides, we systematically investigate the impact of polaritonic coupling on near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between heterostructures integrated with different substrates that have negative permittivity. Our main findings reveal that through the analysis of dispersion contour and photon transmission coefficient, the excitation and reorientation of the fundamental mode facilitate increased photon tunneling, thereby enhancing heat transfer between heterostructures. Conversely, the annihilation of the fundamental mode hinders heat transfer. Furthermore, we find the enhancement or suppression of radiative energy transport depends on the relative magnitude of the slab thickness and the vacuum gap width. Finally, the effect of negative permittivity substrates on NFRHT along the [001] crystalline direction of α-MoO3 is considered. The spectral band where the excited fundamental mode resulting from the negative permittivity substrates is shifted to the first Reststrahlen Band (RB 1) of α-MoO3 and is widened, resulting in more significant enhancement of heat flux from RB 1. We anticipate our results will motivate new direction for dynamical tunability of the PhPs in photonic devices.
