Abstract:Topological spin textures are field arrangements that cannot be continuously deformed to a fully polarized state. In particular, merons are topological textures characterized by half-integer topological charge ±1/2 and vortex-like swirling patterns at large distances. Merons have been studied previously in the context of cosmology, fluid dynamics, condensed matter physics and plasmonics. Here, we visualized optical spin angular momentum of phonon polaritons that resembles nanoscale meron spin textures. Phonon polaritons, hybrids of infrared photons and phonons in hexagonal boron nitride, were excited by circularly polarized light incident on a ring-shaped antenna and imaged using infrared near-field techniques. The polariton field reveals a half-integer topological charge determined by the handedness of the incident beam. Our phonon polaritonic platform opens up new pathways to create, control, and visualize topological textures.

Deep Subwavelength Topological Edge State in a Hyperbolic Medium

Abstract:Topological nanophotonics presents the potential for cutting-edge photonic systems, with a core aim revolving around the emergence of topological edge states. These states are primed to propagate robustly while embracing deep subwavelength confinement that defies diffraction limits. Such attributes make them particularly appealing for nanoscale applications, where achieving these elusive states has remained challenging. We unveil the first experimental proof of deep subwavelength topological edge states by implementing periodic modulation of hyperbolic phonon polaritons within a Van der Waals heterostructure. This finding represents a significant milestone in the field of nanophotonics, and it can be directly extended to and hybridized with other Van der Waals materials in various applications. The extensive scope for material substitution facilitates broadened operational frequency ranges, streamlined integration of diverse polaritonic materials, and compatibility with electronic and excitonic systems.

Abstract:Nanoscale exotic polar topological structures, such as vortices and skyrmions, hold promise for next-generation electronic devices, yet their spontaneous formation in 2D van der Waals (vdW) materials remains quite challenging. Herein, we demonstrate from first-principles that ultrahigh-density polar vortices emerge in the square moiré bilayer formed by twisting two layers of centrosymmetric PbS with the D4h point group. The emerged ferroelectricity arises from the inherent complex strain associated with the twisted structures, and the resulting electron polarization is much greater than that obtained in sliding ferroelectricity. Notably, the engineered strain patterns are characterized by peculiar inhomogeneous in-plane fields with a checkerboard distribution of uniaxial tension. This nanoscale nonuniform strain produces an ultrahigh-density vortex polarization lattice. The results from our study not only reveals a new mechanism for electric polarization and polar topologies in moiré bilayers but also provides opportunities for designing 2D ultrahigh-density electric devices.

Abstract:Topological polar vortices, which are electric analogs of magnetic objects, present great potential in applications of future nanoelectronics because of their nanometer size, anomalous dielectric response, and chirality. To enable the functionalities, it is prerequisite to manipulate the polar states and chirality by using external stimuli. Here, we probe the evolutions of polar state and chirality evolutions of topological polar vortices in PbTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 superlattices under an electric field by using atomically resolved in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy and phase-field simulations. We find that, under electric field, the chiral vortex cores can be moved laterally to form close-pair structures, transform into a /c domain stripes, and finally become a nonchiral c-domain. Such transition is reversible and spontaneous after bias removal. Interestingly, during switching and back-switching events, the vortex rotation can be changed, offering a potential strategy to manipulate vortex chirality. The revealed dynamic behavior of individual polar vortices at the atomic scale provides fundamentals for future device applications.

Abstract:Vertically stacked multiple atomically thin layers have recently widened the landscape of rich optical structures thanks to these quantum metamaterials or van der Waals (vdW) materials, featuring hyperbolic polaritons with unprecedented avenues for light. Despite their far‐reaching implications, most of their properties rest entirely on a trivial band topological origin. Here, we adopt a two‐dimensional (2D) approach towards a micromechanical vdW analogue that, as a result of engineered chiral and mirror symmetries, provides topologically resilient hyperbolic radiation of mechanical vibrations in the ultrasonic regime. By applying laser vibrometry of the micrometer‐sized metasurface, we are able to exhibit the exotic fingerprints of robust hyperbolic radiation spanning several frequencies, which beyond their physical relevance, may enable ultrasonic technologies. Ghost hyperbolic surface polaritons in bulk anisotropic crystals

Abstract:Polaritons in anisotropic materials result in exotic optical features, which can provide opportunities to control light at the nanoscale1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10. So far these polaritons have been limited to two classes: bulk polaritons, which propagate inside a material, and surface polaritons, which decay exponentially away from an interface. Here we report a near-field observation of ghost phonon polaritons, which propagate with in-plane hyperbolic dispersion on the surface of a polar uniaxial crystal and, at the same time, exhibit oblique wavefronts in the bulk. Ghost polaritons are an atypical non-uniform surface wave solution of Maxwell's equations, arising at the surface of uniaxial materials in which the optic axis is slanted with respect to the interface. They exhibit an unusual bi-state nature, being both propagating (phase-progressing) and evanescent (decaying) within the crystal bulk, in contrast to conventional surface waves that are purely evanescent away from the interface. Our real-space near-field imaging experiments reveal long-distance (over 20 micrometres), ray-like propagation of deeply subwavelength ghost polaritons across the surface, verifying long-range, directional and diffraction-less polariton propagation. At the same time, we show that control of the out-of-plane angle of the optic axis enables hyperbolic-to-elliptic topological transitions at fixed frequency, providing a route to tailor the band diagram topology of surface polariton waves. Our results demonstrate a polaritonic wave phenomenon with unique opportunities to tailor nanoscale light in natural anisotropic crystals.

Polariton topological transition effects on radiative heat transfer

Abstract:Twisted two-dimensional bilayer anisotropy materials exhibit many exotic physical phenomena. Manipulating the “twist angle” between the two layers enables the hybridization phenomenon of polaritons, resulting in fine control of the dispersion engineering of the polaritons in these structures. Here, combined with the hybridization phenomenon of anisotropy polaritons, we study theoretically the near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) between two twisted hyperbolic systems. These two twisted hyperbolic systems are mirror images of each other. Each twisted hyperbolic system is composed of two graphene gratings, where there is an angle φ between these two graphene gratings. By analyzing the photonic transmission coefficient as well as the plasmon dispersion relation of the twisted hyperbolic system, we prove the enhancement effect of the topological transitions of the surface state at a special angle [from open (hyperbolic) to closed (elliptical) contours] on radiative heat transfer. Meanwhile the role of the thickness of dielectric spacer and vacuum gap on the manipulating the topological transitions of the surface state and the NFRHT are also discussed. We predict the hysteresis effect of topological transitions at a larger vacuum gap, and demonstrate that as the thickness of the dielectric spacer increases, the transition from the enhancement effect of heat transfer caused by the twisted hyperbolic system to a suppression.

Abstract:2D van der Waals (vdW) layered polar crystals sustaining phonon polaritons (PhPs) have opened up new avenues for fundamental research and optoelectronic applications in the mid-infrared to terahertz ranges. To date, 2D vdW crystals with PhPs are only experimentally demonstrated in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) slabs. For optoelectronic and active photonic applications, semiconductors with tunable charges, finite conductivity, and moderate bandgaps are preferred. Here, PhPs are demonstrated with low loss and ultrahigh electromagnetic field confinements in semiconducting vdW alpha-MoO3. The alpha-MoO3 supports strong hyperbolic PhPs in the mid-infrared range, with a damping rate as low as 0.08. The electromagnetic confinements can reach approximate to lambda 0/120, which can be tailored by altering the thicknesses of the alpha-MoO3 2D flakes. Furthermore, spatial control over the PhPs is achieved with a metal-ion-intercalation strategy. The results demonstrate alpha-MoO3 as a new platform for studying hyperbolic PhPs with tunability, which enable switchable mid-infrared nanophotonic devices.

Abstract:The collective dynamics of topological structures<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03342-4#ref-CR6">6</a> are of interest from both fundamental and applied perspectives. For example, studies of dynamical properties of magnetic vortices and skyrmions<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03342-4#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03342-4#ref-CR4">4</a> have not only deepened our understanding of many-body physics but also offered potential applications in data processing and storage<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03342-4#ref-CR7">7</a>. Topological structures constructed from electrical polarization, rather than electron spin, have recently been realized in ferroelectric superlattices<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03342-4#ref-CR5">5</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03342-4#ref-CR6">6</a>, and these are promising for ultrafast electric-field control of topological orders. However, little is known about the dynamics underlying the functionality of such complex extended nanostructures. Here, using terahertz-field excitation and femtosecond X-ray diffraction measurements, we observe ultrafast collective polarization dynamics that are unique to polar vortices, with orders-of-magnitude higher frequencies and smaller lateral size than those of experimentally realized magnetic vortices<a href="/articles/s41586-021-03342-4#ref-CR3">3</a>. A previously unseen tunable mode, hereafter referred to as a vortexon, emerges in the form of transient arrays of nanoscale circular patterns of atomic displacements, which reverse their vorticity on picosecond timescales. Its frequency is considerably reduced (softened) at a critical strain, indicating a condensation (freezing) of structural dynamics. We use first-principles-based atomistic calculations and phase-field modelling to reveal the microscopic atomic arrangements and corroborate the frequencies of the vortex modes. The discovery of subterahertz collective dynamics in polar vortices opens opportunities for electric-field-driven data processing in topological structures with ultrahigh speed and density.

Topologically reconfigurable magnetic polaritons

Abstract:Hyperbolic polaritons in extremely anisotropic materials have attracted intensive attention due to their exotic optical features. Recent advances in optical materials reveal unprecedented dispersion engineering of polaritons, resulting in twistronics for photons, canalized phonon polaritons, shear polaritons, and tunable topological polaritons. However, the on-demand reconfigurability of polaritons, especially with magnetic anisotropic dispersions, is restricted by weak natural magnetic anisotropy and hence remains largely unexplored. Here, we show how origami fused with artificial magnetism unveils a versatile pathway to topologically reconfigure magnetic polaritons. We experimentally demonstrate that the three-dimensional origami deformation allows to reconfigure hyperbolic or elliptic topology of polariton dispersion and modulate group velocity. With group velocity transitioning from positive to negative directions, we further report reconfigurable origami polariton circuitry in which the polariton propagation and phase distribution can be tailored. Our findings provide alternative perspectives on on-chip polaritonics, with potential applications in energy transfer, sensing, and information transport.

Abstract:Hyperbolic shear polaritons (HShPs) emerge with widespread attention as a new class of polariton modes with broken symmetry due to shear lattices. In this letter, we find a new mechanism of generating HShPs. When utilizing vortex waves as excitation sources of hyperbolic materials without off-diagonal elements, HShPs will appear. In addition, this asymmetric HShPs can be recovered as symmetric modes away from the source, with a critical transition mode between the left-skewed and right-skewed HShPs, via tuning the magnitude of the off-diagonal imaginary component and controlling the topological charge of vortex source. It is worth mentioning that we explore the influence of parity of topological charges on the field distribution and demonstrate these exotic phenomena from numerical and analytical perspectives. Our results will promote new opportunities for both HShPs and vortex waves, widening the horizon for various hyperbolic materials based on vortex sources and offering a new degree of freedom to control various kinds of polaritons.
Topologically tunable polaritons based on two-dimensional crystals in a photonic lattice

Abstract:Topological photonics is an emergent research discipline which interlinks fundamental aspects of photonics, information processing and solid-state physics. Exciton-polaritons are a specifically interesting platform to study topological phenomena, since the coherent light matter coupling enables new degrees of freedom such as tunable non-linearities, chiralities and dissipation. Room-temperature operation of such exciton-polaritons relies on materials comprising both, large exciton binding energies and oscillator strength. We harness widely spectrally tunable, room temperature exciton-polaritons based on a WS2 monolayer in an open optical cavity to realize a polariton potential landscape which emulates the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) Hamiltonian. It comprises a domain boundary hosting a topological, exponentially localized mode at the interface between two lattices characterized by different Zak-phases which features a spectral tunability over a range as large as 80 meV. Moreover, we utilize the unique tilt-tunability of our implementation, to transform the SSH-lattice into a Stark-ladder. This transformation couples the topologically protected defect mode to propagating lattice modes, and effectively changes the symmetry of the system. Furthermore, it allows us to directly quantify the Zak-phase difference $\Delta_{Zak}=(1.13\pm 0.11)\pi$ between the two topological phases. Our work comprises an important step towards in-situ tuning topological lattices to control and guide light on non-linear chips.

Abstract:The miniaturization of photonic technologies calls for a deliberate integration of diverse materials to enable novel functionalities in chip-scale devices. Topological photonic systems are a promising platform to couple structured light with solid-state matter excitations and establish robust forms of 1D polaritonic transport. Here, we demonstrate a mechanism to efficiently trap mid-IR structured phonon-polaritons in topological defects of a metasurface integrated with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). These defects, created by stitching displaced domains of a Kekulé-patterned metasurface, sustain localized polaritonic modes that originate from coupling of electromagnetic fields with hBN lattice vibrations. These 0D higher-order topological modes, comprising phononic and photonic components with chiral polarization, are imaged in real- and Fourier-space. The results reveal a singular radiation leakage profile and selective excitation through spin-polarized edge waves at heterogeneous topological interfaces. This offers impactful opportunities to control light-matter waves in their dimensional hierarchy, paving the way for topological polariton shaping, ultrathin structured light sources, and thermal management at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Polaritons—hybrid light–matter excitations—enable nanoscale control of light. Particularly large polariton field confinement and long lifetimes can be found in graphene and materials consisting of two-dimensional layers bound by weak van der Waals forces1,2 (vdW materials). These polaritons can be tuned by electric fields3,4 or by material thickness5, leading to applications including nanolasers6, tunable infrared and terahertz detectors7, and molecular sensors8. Polaritons with anisotropic propagation along the surface of vdW materials have been predicted, caused by in-plane anisotropic structural and electronic properties9. In such materials, elliptic and hyperbolic in-plane polariton dispersion can be expected (for example, plasmon polaritons in black phosphorus9), the latter leading to an enhanced density of optical states and ray-like directional propagation along the surface. However, observation of anisotropic polariton propagation in natural materials has so far remained elusive. Here we report anisotropic polariton propagation along the surface of α-MoO3, a natural vdW material. By infrared nano-imaging and nano-spectroscopy of semiconducting α-MoO3 flakes and disks, we visualize and verify phonon polaritons with elliptic and hyperbolic in-plane dispersion, and with wavelengths (up to 60 times smaller than the corresponding photon wavelengths) comparable to those of graphene plasmon polaritons and boron nitride phonon polaritons3–5. From signal oscillations in real-space images we measure polariton amplitude lifetimes of 8 picoseconds, which is more than ten times larger than that of graphene plasmon polaritons at room temperature10. They are also a factor of about four larger than the best values so far reported for phonon polaritons in isotopically engineered boron nitride11 and for graphene plasmon polaritons at low temperatures12. In-plane anisotropic and ultra-low-loss polaritons in vdW materials could enable directional and strong light–matter interactions, nanoscale directional energy transfer and integrated flat optics in applications ranging from bio-sensing to quantum nanophotonics.

Abstract:Following the discovery of moiré-driven superconductivity and density waves in twisted-graphene multilayers, twistronics has spurred a surge of interest in tailored broken symmetries through angular rotations enabling new properties, from electronics to photonics and phononics. Analogously, in monoclinic polar crystals a nontrivial angle between nondegenerate dipolar phonon resonances can naturally emerge due to asymmetries in their crystal lattice, and its variations are associated with intriguing polaritonic phenomena, including axial dispersion, i.e., the rotation of the optical axis with frequency, and microscopic shear effects that result in an asymmetric distribution of material loss. So far, these phenomena have been restricted to specific midinfrared frequencies difficult to access with conventional laser sources and fundamentally limited by the degree of asymmetry and by the strength of light-matter interactions available in natural crystals. Here, we leverage the twistronics concept to demonstrate maximal axial dispersion and loss redistribution of hyperbolic waves in elastic metasurfaces, achieved by tailoring the angle between coupled metasurface pairs featuring tailored anisotropy. We show extreme control over elastic wave dispersion and absorption via the twist angle and leverage the resulting phenomena to demonstrate enhanced propagation distance, in-plane reflection-free negative refraction and diffraction-free defect detection. Our work welds the concepts of twistronics, non-Hermiticity, and extreme anisotropy, demonstrating the powerful opportunities enabled by metasurfaces for tunable, highly directional surface-acoustic-wave propagation of great interest for a wide range of applications spanning from seismic mitigation to on-chip phononics and wireless communication systems, hence paving the way toward their translation into emerging photonic and polaritonic metasurface technologies. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevX.14.021031 Published by the American Physical Society under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Polar vortex hidden in twisted bilayers of paraelectric SrTiO3

Abstract:Polar topologies, such as vortex and skyrmion, have attracted significant interest due to their unique physical properties and promising applications in high-density memory devices. Currently, most polar vortices are observed in heterostructures containing ferroelectric materials and constrained by substrates. In this study, we unravel arrays of polar vortices formed in twisted freestanding bilayers composed of SrTiO3, a quantum-paraelectric material. Depth-resolved structures of the bilayers are measured with deep-sub-angstrom resolution and one picometer accuracy using multislice ptychography, enabling identification of the three-dimensional variations of polarization topology. Our findings reveal the evolution of the polar vortices in the twisted overlapping layers, demonstrating the reverse of rotation manner in the depth direction. Twisted freestanding bilayers provide a unique platform for exploration and modulation of novel polar topologies.

Abstract:Optical vortices (OVs) promise to greatly enhance optical information capacity via orbital angular momentum multiplexing. The need for the on-chip integration of orbital angular momentum technologies has prompted research into subwavelength-confined polaritonic OVs. However, the topological order imprinted by the structure used for transduction from free-space beams to surface polaritons is inherently fixed after fabrication. Here we overcome this limitation via dispersion-driven topological charge multiplication. We switch the OV topological charge within a small frequency range (~3%) by leveraging the strong sublinear dispersion of low-loss surface phonon polaritons on silicon carbide membranes. Applying the Huygens principle, we quantitatively evaluate the topological order of experimental OVs detected by near-field imaging. We further explore the deuterogenic effect, which predicts the coexistence of multiple topological charges in higher-order polaritonic OVs. Our work demonstrates a viable method to manipulate the topological charge of polaritonic OVs, paving the way for the exploration of novel orbital-angular-momentum-enabled light–matter interactions at mid-infrared frequencies.

Abstract:Highly confined and low‐loss hyperbolic phonon polaritons (HPhPs) sustained in van der Waals crystals exhibit outstanding potential to concentrate the long‐wave electromagnetic fields deep into the subwavelength region. However, precise tuning on the HPhP propagation characteristics is a critical challenge to facilitate its practical applications in nanophotonic devices and circuits. This study, by taking advantage of the varying air gaps in a suspended van der Waals α‐MoO3 crystal, shows the feasibility to tune wavelength and damping rate of the HPhPs propagating inside the α‐MoO3. The results indicate that the dependence of polariton wavelength on the gap distance for HPhPs in lower and upper Reststrahlen bands contradict each other. Most interestingly, the tuning range of the polariton wavelengths for HPhPs in the lower band, which exhibits in‐plane hyperbolicity, is wider than that for HPhPs in the upper band which exhibits out‐of‐plane hyperbolicity. A polariton wavelength elongation of up to 160% and a reduction in the damping rate up to 35% is recorded. These findings can not only provide fundamental insight into the nanoscale manipulation of light by polaritonic crystals, but also open up new opportunities for tunable nanophotonic applications.
