Abstract:Models for water transfer in the crop–soil system are key components of agro-hydrological models for irrigation, fertilizer and pesticide practices. Many of the hydrological models for water transfer in the crop–soil system are either too approximate due to oversimplified algorithms or employ complex numerical schemes. In this paper we developed a simple and sufficiently accurate algorithm which can be easily adopted in agro-hydrological models for the simulation of water dynamics. We used a dual crop coefficient approach proposed by the FAO for estimating potential evaporation and transpiration, and a dynamic model for calculating relative root length distribution on a daily basis. In a small time step of 0.001d, we implemented algorithms separately for actual evaporation, root water uptake and soil water content redistribution by decoupling these processes. The Richards equation describing soil water movement was solved using an integration strategy over the soil layers instead of complex numerical schemes. This drastically simplified the procedures of modeling soil water and led to much shorter computer codes. The validity of the proposed model was tested against data from field experiments on two contrasting soils cropped with wheat. Good agreement was achieved between measurement and simulation of soil water content in various depths collected at intervals during crop growth. This indicates that the model is satisfactory in simulating water transfer in the crop–soil system, and therefore can reliably be adopted in agro-hydrological models. Finally we demonstrated how the developed model could be used to study the effect of changes in the environment such as lowering the groundwater table caused by the construction of a motorway on crop transpiration.

Abstract:In allusion to the case that the current soil hydrodynamic models of soil-plant-atmosphere continuum system cannot give a good prediction for rooting depth and root length density distribution,a new model for water transfer throughout growth was developed,which employing a recently proposed algorithm for simulating the dynamic root growth and the approach introduced by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations for estimating the soil evaporation and plant transpiration.The soil water movement was described by a flow equation which was solved by a finite element numerical scheme.The validation of the developed model was carried out against data from a field experiment on a soil cropped with wheat in Netherlands.Results showed that the simulation results agreed with the measurement data of soil water content down the profile at intervals;and the soil water content in the top soil layer changed rapidly for the influence of rainfall and evaporation in upper boundary;the simulated root depth and the root length density down the profile at intervals were satisfactory except for few data;and the modeling results of transpiration and evaporation were reliable.So the new proposed model is reasonable,and it can model the root growth and water transfer effectively in the soil-crop-atmosphere system.
Extending the Integrated Richards Equation Method to New Boundary Conditions: Model Description and Validation

Abstract:There is a need for developing an accurate and simple method, which can be widely used in agro-hydrological models. The Integrated Richards Equation method is a good and simple method to simulate cyclic movement of water in the soilatmosphere system. However, this method still has some unsolved problems and it is needed for further development if used in agro-hydrological simulation. In this study, the Integrated Richards Equation method was further developed for the agro-hydrological simulation by introducing the commonly used soil hydraulic functions, top and lower boundary conditions. Infiltration numerical experiments and a lab evaporation experiment were used for the validation of the model's capabilities of modelling infiltration and evaporation, respectively. A field evaporation experiment, which was conducted from 27 April to 21 November in 1971, at Big Ground field, Wellesbourne, UK, was used for in-site validation. Soil samples from four replicate plots were taken at 5 cm increments to a depth of 45 cm at regular intervals throughout the experiment. In total, 10 measurements of soil water content down the profile for ten different times were taken during the experiment. Numerical infiltration experiments showed that the proposed method could give good predictions for two contrasting soils, loamy sand and clay loam, under unsteady intense rainfall conditions. The results were in line with those from the complex numerical scheme of FEM. Good results were also obtained in testing the method for evaporation from coarse sand, but the method under-predicted the amount of evaporation from fine sand. The results of testing against data from the field experiment show that the predicted soil water content was in good agreement with the measured values down the soil profile, but not for the soil close to the surface. This indicates that the proposed method performed well in agro-hydrological simulations on agricultural bare soils under different complex conditions at the upper boundary. Thus the method could be applied in agro-hydrological simulations.
A Physically-Based Integrated Numerical Model for Flow, Upland Erosion, and Contaminant Transport in Surface-Subsurface Systems

Abstract:This paper presents a physically-based integrated hydrologic model that can simulate the rainfall-induced 2D surface water flow, 3D variably saturated subsurface flow, upland soil erosion and transport, and contaminant transport in the surface-subsurface system of a watershed. The model couples surface and subsurface flows based on the assumption of continuity conditions of pressure head and exchange flux at the ground, considering infiltration and evapotranspiration. The upland rill/interrill soil erosion and transport are simulated using a non-equilibrium transport model. Contaminant transport in the integrated surface and subsurface domains is simulated using advection-diffusion equations with mass changes due to sediment sorption and desorption and exchanges between two domains due to infiltration, diffusion, and bed change. The model requires no special treatments at the interface of upland areas and streams and is suitable for wetland areas and agricultural watersheds with shallow streams.
Simulation of Rainfall-Runoff in the Deep Hollow Lake Watershed Using an Integrated Surface-Subsurface Flow Model

Abstract:Research has pointed out that subsurface contributions may play an important role in predicting surface runoff and water depth during a rainfall event. A fully implicit coupled surface-subsurface flow model designed for hydrologic evaluation in wetlands and other fields is presented in this paper. In the model, the modified horizontal two-dimensional diffusion wave equation governing surface flow is solved with three-dimensional variably saturated subsurface flow equation in a coupled way. The coupled system of equations governing surface and subsurface flows is discretized using the finite volume method in space and the implicit backward scheme in time. The modified Picard procedure is used to linearize the surface and subsurface flow equations. The discretized algebraic equation system is solved using Stone's Strongly Implicit Procedure. The established model is used to simulate the storm event in the Deephollow Lake watershed, which is located within the Yazoo River Basin, North Mississippi. The lake is in the center of an agricultural watershed and surrounded by approximately 232 acres of cotton and soybean fields and wooded area. The numerical solution shows that the developed integrated surface-subsurface flow model is able to predict the hydrological response in surface and subsurface domains due to rainfall.

Abstract:Surface-subsurface interactions are an intrinsic component of the hydrologic response within a watershed; therefore, hydrologic modeling tools should consider these interactions to provide reliable predictions, especially during rainfall-runoff processes. This paper presents a fully implicit coupled model designed for hydrologic evaluation in wetlands, agricultural fields, etc. The model uses the depth-averaged two-dimensional (2D) diffusion wave equation for shallow surface water flow, and the three-dimensional (3D) mixed-form Richards equation for variably saturated subsurface flow. The interactions between surface and subsurface flows are considered via infiltration in dynamic equilibrium. A general framework for coupling the surface and subsurface flow equations is adopted, based on the continuity conditions of pressure head and exchange flux rather than the traditional conductance concept. The diffusion wave surface water equation is used as an upper boundary condition for the initial-boundary value problem of variably saturated subsurface flow. The coupled system of equations governing surface and subsurface flows is discretized using the finite-volume method in space and an implicit scheme in time. Component modules and the coupled flow model have been tested by comparing numerical results with published experimental data and analytical solutions. The verified integrated flow model has been applied to simulate the rainfall-runoff processes in a published field-scale experiment and the Deep Hollow Lake watershed, Mississippi. The results have demonstrated that the established numerical model is capable of simulating 3D subsurface flow and 2D surface shallow water flow as well as predicting the interactions between them.

Abstract:To investigate the complex hydrological, morphodynamic, and environmental processes in watersheds, a physically-based integrated two-dimensional (2D) surface and three-dimensional (3D) subsurface model for flow, soil erosion and transport, and contaminant transport in the surface-subsurface system is presented in this paper. The model applies the same set of surface equations of flow, sediment, and contaminant transport for describing both upland areas and streams, so that no special treatments are required at their interface. The established model has been evaluated by comparisons with published experimental, numerical, and analytical data and then applied in an agricultural watershed. The model is suitable for wetland areas and agricultural watersheds in which streams are not very narrow and deep, and meanwhile a relatively fine mesh that can distinguish the streams is preferred.
An Approximate Model on Three-Dimensional Groundwater Infiltration in Sewer Systems.

Abstract:Groundwater infiltration through cracked sewer pipes has caused significant economic losses. This paper presents a three-dimensional analytical expression for calculating the steady-state groundwater infiltration rate into sewer systems. As an extension of the previously developed two-dimensional model by the author, this new model can be used to simulate the infiltration through an orifice defect. The derived analytical expression has been validated with experimental results. The new model incorporates all the related resistances during the infiltration process, including the soil head loss and the orifice loss. The soil head loss is assessed with Ergun equation, which involves an inertial loss term in addition to the viscous loss. This has significantly extended the application range of the new expression. A new OS number (the ratio of orifice loss to soil loss) expression is also presented. The order analysis of the OS number expression has demonstrated that in most real cases, the head loss through the soil layer dominates the whole infiltration process.

Abstract:Soil water content changes with time due to rainfall, infiltration, evaporation, and transpiration. This paper presents a physically-based coupled surface and variably saturated subsurface flow model to simulate the distribution of soil moisture in three dimensions. The flow in variably saturated soil is described by the 3D Richards equation in the mixed form, which is discretized using the finite volume method and solved implicitly using the modified Picard iteration. In the present model, the actual evaporation from bare soil is calculated using the physically-based relationship of VS2D method, which takes into account both constant and falling rate stages. The actual transpiration by plants is modeled using the root water uptake module with water stress compensation, which considers soil water pressure head and soil resistance to water flow. The model has been tested using published data.

Abstract:Flat, low-lying agricultural areas such as irrigation districts in southern China have been increasingly vulnerable to flood inundation disasters because of the increased runoff associated with urbanization and climate change. In this study, we developed a waterlogging process simulation model comprising two parts: runoff generation module and runoff confluence module. An improved tank model and hydrodynamic model based on Saint–Venant equations were adopted in the runoff generation and confluence module, respectively. The results show that the model’s relative error and root mean square error are 2.1% and 0.17 mm/h, and the Nash coefficient of the model is 0.91. The relative error of river level simulation was within 5%, and the Nash coefficient was higher than 0.9. The proposed waterlogging simulation model could be a valuable tool for describing the process of waterlogging generation, accumulation, and confluence in the studied irrigation district or other regions with similar climatic conditions.

Abstract:Increasing water and fertilizer productivity stands as a relevant challenge for sustainable agriculture. Alternate furrow irrigation and surface fertigation have long been identified as water and fertilizer conserving techniques in agricultural lands. The objective of this study was to simulate water flow and fertilizer transport in the soil surface and in the soil profile for variable and fixed alternate furrow fertigation and for conventional furrow fertigation. An experimental data set was used to calibrate and validate two simulation models: a 1D surface fertigation model and the 2D subsurface water and solute transfer model HYDRUS-2D. Both models were combined to simulate the fertigation process in furrow irrigation. The surface fertigation model could successfully simulate runoff discharge and nitrate concentration for all irrigation treatments. Six soil hydraulic and solute transport parameters were inversely estimated using the Levenberg–Marquardt optimization technique. The outcome of this process calibrated HYDRUS-2D to the observed field data. HYDRUS-2D was run in validation mode, simulating water content and nitrate concentration in the soil profiles of the wet furrows, ridges and dry furrows at the upstream, middle and downstream parts of the experimental field. This model produced adequate agreement between measured and predicted soil water content and nitrate concentration. The combined model stands as a valuable tool to better design and manage fertigation in alternate and conventional furrow irrigation.

Abstract:Accurate prediction of surface runoff is critical to watershed management. In this research a semi-analytical model was adopted to solve the kinematic wave equation based on the assumption that the rate of overland-flow depth change is proportional to the rainfall excess. Simulations were compared with the results from laboratory experiments at various rain intensities. Parameters of infiltration rate and Manning’s roughness coefficient were determined. The accuracy of the semi-analytical model was evaluated by numerical simulations. The predicted outflow rates from the numerical simulations agreed well with the observed data. Further, our study indicated that the ratio (c) of the overland-flow depth change to the rainfall excess was a power function of the rain intensity. The depth and velocity of water flow at any time and distance could be calculated with the semi-analytical model. Hydraulic parameters including Reynolds number, Froude number, hydraulic shear stress, stream power and Darcy-Weisbach friction factor characterizing the dynamic features of overland flow of rainwater were calculated based on calculated overland-flow depth and velocity. The proposed analytical method can provide a new way to predict infiltration and runoff over sloped land.

Abstract:An accurate quantification of flow components and an understanding of water source dynamics are essential for effective water resource and quality management. However, the complexity of hydrological processes and the interference of intensive human activities pose significant challenges in precisely separating water discharge into distinct components such as surface runoff, interflow, and groundwater. The Xinanjiang (XAJ) model, a conceptual watershed hydrological model, has been developed and successfully implemented for rainfall–runoff simulations and hydrograph separations across various Chinese watersheds. While the model framework is robust, it fails to account for agricultural irrigation water withdrawals and the variations in in-stream water travel times across different hydrological regimes, introducing considerable uncertainty in simulating low-flow conditions. This study introduced modifications to the XAJ model by allowing parameter adjustments across different flow regimes and incorporating irrigation withdrawals into the runoff routing process. Utilizing a decade of hydrometeorological data (2013–2022) from the Yongan River watershed in eastern China, the modified model demonstrated improved efficiency metrics in low- and medium-flow regimes compared to the original model, with a Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient improvement from −4.43~−0.49 to 0.40~0.46, R2 from 0.21~0.36 to 0.53~0.63, and BIAS reduction from 7.60~89.08% to 2.06~12.71%. Furthermore, the modified XAJ model provided a more accurate estimation of the spatial and temporal distribution of streamflow components across sub-watersheds. The original model tended to overestimate groundwater contributions (13%) and underestimate interflow (14%), particularly in low-flow conditions. The enhanced XAJ model, thus, offers a more effective tool for identifying streamflow components, providing essential insights into hydrological processes for better management decisions.
Modeling of Streamflow in an Underdrain System of Vegetated Dry Swales

Abstract:Vegetated dry swales were designed to promote infiltration, retain storm water, and reduce the surface runoff peak flow. As an important part of swales, the underdrain system, filled with gravels, was usually equipped with a perforated pipe to drain water from upper layers during rainfall events. In most existing models (e.g., SWMM) that were widely used to simulate the hydrological process for vegetated dry swales, outflow from the underdrain system was usually simplified as orifice flow related to water head, and the hydraulic process in the gravel layer and in the perforated pipe on the bottom of the swales could not be described. A hydraulic model of vegetated dry swales was developed in this study by combining an overland flow model, an infiltration model, and an underdrain streamflow model. The flow in the underdrain system was divided into two sections, i.e., the flow through the gravel channel and the flow through the perforated pipe. The former was simulated through a permeability model for porous media, and the latter was described by applying an equation. For the development of the function, data were collected for the calibration of parameters in field tests in Shenzhen, southern China, and water infiltration rate from the gravel channel to the perforated pipe was assumed to be proportional to the water head in the gravel channel and the orifice area on the perforated pipe. Combining an overland flow model, an infiltration model, and an underdrain streamflow model, the vegetated dry swale model was performed to analyze surface runoff retention and underdrain streamflow performance in a dry swale with a perforated pipe after calibration and validation with measured data. The study demonstrated that the proposed model could accurately describe the hydraulic process in the underdrain system of a vegetated dry swale and advance better understandings of dry swale hydraulic performance.
How soil texture, channel shape and cross‐sectional area affect moisture dynamics and water loss in irrigation channels

Abstract:To enhance the utilization efficiency of farmland irrigation water and reduce the leakage of water conveyance channels, the leakage process of channels was simulated dynamically. The simulated results were compared with data measured in laboratory experiments, and the performance of the model was evaluated. The results indicated that the simulated values of the model were consistent with the observation values, and the R2 values varied between 0.91 and 0.99. In addition, based on the laboratory experiments, a water supply system (Mariotte bottles) and soil box were built using plexiglass. Three influencing factors, namely, the channel form, soil texture and channel cross‐sectional area, were varied to observe and calculate the resulting cumulative infiltration amount, infiltration rate and wetting front migration distance. HYDRUS‐3D software was used to solve the three‐dimensional soil water movement equation under different initial conditions. The results demonstrated that the U‐shaped channel was more effective than the trapezoidal channel in increasing the utilization efficiency of the water resources. A U‐shaped channel with a small channel cross‐sectional area should be adopted and the soil particle size should be prioritized in the construction of water conveyance channels for farmlands. The simulation results were in agreement with the observed results, which indicates that HYDRUS‐3D is a reliable tool that can accurately simulate the soil moisture movement in water conveyance channels. Simulating water and nitrogen loss from an irrigated paddy field under continuously flooded condition with Hydrus-1D model

Abstract:Agricultural non-point source pollution is a major factor in surface water and groundwater pollution, especially for nitrogen (N) pollution. In this paper, an experiment was conducted in a direct-seeded paddy field under traditional continuously flooded irrigation (CFI). The water movement and N transport and transformation were simulated via the Hydrus-1D model, and the model was calibrated using field measurements. The model had a total water balance error of 0.236 cm and a relative error (error/input total water) of 0.23%. For the solute transport model, the N balance error and relative error (error/input total N) were 0.36 kg ha-1 and 0.40%, respectively. The study results indicate that the plow pan plays a crucial role in vertical water movement in paddy fields. Water flow was mainly lost through surface runoff and underground drainage, with proportions to total input water of 32.33 and 42.58%, respectively. The water productivity in the study was 0.36 kg m-3. The simulated N concentration results revealed that ammonia was the main form in rice uptake (95% of total N uptake), and its concentration was much larger than for nitrate under CFI. Denitrification and volatilization were the main losses, with proportions to total consumption of 23.18 and 14.49%, respectively. Leaching (10.28%) and surface runoff loss (2.05%) were the main losses of N pushed out of the system by water. Hydrus-1D simulation was an effective method to predict water flow and N concentrations in the three different forms. The study provides results that could be used to guide water and fertilization management and field results for numerical studies of water flow and N transport and transformation in the future.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to construct a simplified distributed hydrological model based on the surveyed watershed soil properties database. Design/methodology/approach The new established model requires fewer parameters to be adjusted than needed by former hydrological models. However, the achieved stream-flow simulation results are similar and comparable to the classic hydrological models, such as the Xinanjiang model and the TOPMODEL. Findings Good results show that the discharge and the top surface soil moisture can be simultaneously simulated, and that is the exclusive character of this new model. The stream-flow simulation results from two moderate hydrological watershed models show that the daily stream-flow simulation achieved the classic hydrological results shown in the TOPMODEL and Xinanjiang model. The soil moisture validation results show that the modeled watershed scale surface soil moisture has general agreement with the obtained measurements, with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) value of 0.04 (m3/m3) for one of the one-measurement sites and an averaged RMSE of 0.08 (m3/m3) over all measurements. Originality/value In this paper, a new simplified distributed hydrological model was constructed.

To analyze a soil wetting pattern under a DI system, a 2D numerical model was developed using a 2D Richards equation with appropriate boundary conditions in a cylindrical polar coordinate system. The developed numerical model was validated with experimental data and used to simulate wetting patterns in complex soil conditions. Numerical model using 2D Richard's equation in cylindrical polar coordinate system was developed to assess the soil wetting patterns in a drip irrigation system. A fully implicit finite‐difference scheme was used to solve equations with suitable initial and boundary conditions. The developed model was validated with an experimental result available in the literature, which shows a high level of concordance with low values of RMSE and R2 greater than 0.93 for all discharge rates. Furthermore, the versatility and applicability of the model were demonstrated for complex subsurface conditions considering homogeneous and heterogeneous soil profiles. Water ponding on the surface was observed in clay loam soil, contrasting with deep percolation in sandy loam soil. This underscores the significance of adjusting both discharge rate and irrigation frequency in accordance with prevailing soil conditions.

Abstract:Irrigation management is of importance in agriculture, especially in the present since the lack of water resources. Automatic irrigation is a key part of modern agriculture resulting a higher production and lower water consuming. Water requirement estimation is the base of the determination of the irrigation regulation. Based on the information of climate, water and soil, a computer modelling of water requirement for paddy rice estimation was carried out and performed well in Qishitan Irrigation District, Guangxi.

Abstract:The heterogeneous distribution of water-repellent materials at the soil surface causes a phenomenon known as fractional wettability. This condition frequently triggers destabilization of the wetting front during water infiltration, resulting in the formation of fingered bypass flow. However, few analytical tools exist to understand and model this behavior. Moreover, existing infiltration models fail to fit certain infiltration curves that exist in experimental data. For these reasons, we introduce a novel infiltration model to simulate water infiltration under fractional wettable conditions. We conceptualize the soil surface as a composite of two distinct portions: a water-repellent fraction, where hydrophobic effects impede water infiltration, and a wettable fraction, where capillarity and gravity are the dominant forces controlling the process. The new model was validated using a dataset comprising infiltration data from 60 field measurements. Additionally, validation was performed using 660 analytically generated infiltration curves from six synthetic soils with varying textures. This innovative approach enabled us to account for the combined influence of these two fractions and to enhance the interpretation of infiltration curves with mixed shapes, which other common methods are unable to reproduce.
