Abstract:Different surface morphologies of TiO2 thin films were prepared by hydrothermal synthesis method on Ti substrates through changing reaction time. The microstructure, composition, optical properties and photocatalytic properties of TiO2 thin films were systematically investigated by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectrometer and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. As the reaction time increases, anatase structure and brookite structure of TiO2 films respectively increases and decreases, corresponding to surface morphology changes from irregular structure to regular geometrical shape structure. These structural changes are accompanied by significant variations of optical properties and photocatalytic properties including a widening of the band gap from 2.86 to 3.19 eV, photocatalytic degradation efficiency from 92.5 to 98.1% and photocatalytic degradation rate from 0.032 to 0.048 min(-1). Among all samples, TiO2-1 shows the best photocatalytic properties. Compositional analysis indicates that TiO2 surface layer contains Ti and O elements, the ratio of Ti:O is 1:2.28 which is close to the atom ratio of TiO2. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Mechanism and structure analysis of TiO 2 surface coated with SiO 2 and Al 2O 3

Abstract:Photochemical activity of TiO 2 can be reduced through surface coating, which favors to increase dispersiveness, Weather resistance and antipulverization. The binary coating process of Si and Al to TiO 2 was studied experimentally. The isoelectic point of TiO 2 in serif lux was measured as pH was equal to 3. 6. Maximum Zeta potential can be got at pH 10 around, which favors to dispersion of particles. Studies on the aggregation rate of Si and Al indicate that, when pH has a value between 9 and 10, the aggregation rate of silicon acid is small, which favors to form homogeneous and compact membrane, so optimal coating pH value is between 9 and 10. According to the difference of 2p orbital electron binding energy of Ti n XPS before and after being coated, it can be inferred that Si and Al in coating layer combine to TiO 2 surface through chemical bond.
Investigation of surface morphology, structure and electrocatalytic properties for O2 evolution of titanium based IrO2+Ta2O5 coatings

Abstract:Titanium based IrO2+Ta2O5 oxide anodes with different compositions and pyrolysis temperatures were prepared by thermodecomposition method. By using X-ray diffraction (XRD), the structure and texture coefficient of the coatings. TC(hkl), of IrO2 rutile crystal have been tested. It showed that, the crystallization processes of IrO2 and Ta2O5 in IrO2+(100-x) Ta2O5 (x is in mol%) films affect and confine each other. In the mixed system, IrO2 rutile phase exists as a solid solution with Ta, and attains the maximum solubility when x=70 mol%, i.e. for the coating of 70% IrO2+Ta2O5. For the coatings of low iridium content or at low preparing temperature, (110) and (101) preferred orientations are dominant. However, preferred growth of IrO2 weakened with increasing either iridium content or temperature. Three typical surface morphologies were observed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The crystallite size of the mixed oxide coatings are finest for the film of 70%IrO2+30%Ta2O5, and decreases with the pyrolysis temperature. As the results of the finest crystallite segregating on surface and the maximum solid solubility of Ir and Ta component in deposits, the coatings with the composition of 70%IrO2Y+Ta2O5 prepared at 450 °C present the maximum electrocatalytic activity for O2 evolution in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. Up to 550°C, Ti base suffers to oxidation resulting in decreasing anode conductivity, therefore, coatings perform a low activity.
Mechanism and Structure Analysis of Tio2 Surface Coated with Sio2 and Al2o3

Abstract:Oxygen vacancies in transition-metal oxides can facilitate photocatalysis activity critical for environmental remediation and solar energy conversion. Investigation of photocatalytic activity of TiO(2)with different amounts of the oxygen vacancies can provide fundamental insights into the oxygen-vacancy-dependent reaction mechanisms. Here, the oxygen vacancies in TiO(2)nanoparticles were investigated by the combination of transmission electron microscopy with electron energy loss spectra, x-ray near-edge structures, and x-ray absorption techniques. The results demonstrate that the oxygen vacancies mainly exist at the surface of TiO(2)and the crystalline structure of TiO(2)almost keeps no change during annealing under the different oxygen pressures at 500 degrees C. The exact quantity and distribution of the oxygen vacancies in TiO(2)nanoparticles were obtained. The surface oxygen vacancies on TiO(2)significantly enhance photocatalytic activity for Rhodamine B degradation and hydrogen generation. The formation of oxygen vacancies at the TiO(2)surfaces is responsible for engineering the band gap of TiO(2)and tailoring their electronic structures, and promoting light absorption and enhancement photocatalysis. This work could provide new insights into the understanding of the photocatalytic activity enhancement by the surface oxygen vacancies.

Abstract:TiO2 films were formed by thermal oxidation of electron-beam-evaporated and magnetron-sputtered titanium (Ti) films. It was found that the TiO2 films formed by thermal oxidation of evaporated Ti films at 450°C were of rutile phase, while those derived from thermal oxidation of sputtered Ti films at 450–600°C kept to be of anatase phase. Such different crystallization behaviors of TiO2 films seem to be due to the difference between the microstructures of evaporated and sputtered Ti films. Furthermore, the mechanism underlying the different crystallization behaviors of TiO2 films has been tentatively explored.

Abstract:In this paper, the structure of ZnO-TiO2 has been studied by XRD quantitative analysis and low energy ion scattering spectroscopy. The experimental results have shown that ZnO is dispersed on the surface of TiO2 as a monolayer, the combination between ZnO and TiO2 is quite weak and can not lead to the production of new surface acid sites.In addition, the three kinds of binary metal oxides containing ZnO (ZnO-Al2O3, ZnO-SiO2 and ZnO-TiO2) have been compared The distinct differences among them in the structure and properties, and their origins have been discussed.

Abstract:Though black titania has been widely investigated, the influence of crystal phase during the reduction process remains unknown. In the present study, we found that the rutile phase is preferentially reduced over anatase from detailed experimental investigations and a comprehensive understanding of selective breaking of Ti-O bonds in surfaced TiO6 octahedral motifs. This work may inspire an encouraging understanding in designing highly efficient black material for solar harvesting.

Abstract:In-depth understanding of the nature of oxide film in the Ti powder surface was investigated at an atomic scale in terms of quantitative composition, spatial distribution and thickness. The oxide film consists of TiO2, Ti2O3 and TiO with a continuous spatial distribution, acquired from the atomic ratio of O/Ti by EELS and APT. Composition and structure of the oxide film were thoroughly explored based on the oxygen-atomic diffusion theory and thermodynamic analysis to uncover the oxidation mechanism of the Ti powders. This study opens opportunities to gauge the powder properties, optimize the subsequent processing, and improve the final performance.

Abstract:A first principles study of adsorption of oxygen atom on surfaces of γ-TiAl was performed to investigate the intrinsic mechanism dominated the adsorption behaviours. First surface stability was evaluated. It was shown that the (100) surface is the most stable surface followed by (111), (110), and (001) surfaces. Then adsorption of oxygen on the (100) and the (111) surfaces was studied. Oxygen atom prefers the Ti-rich environment and has high potential to generate TiO2. Competition between the O-Al bonding and the O-Ti bonding was observed. However, the O-Ti interaction dominates the adsorption behaviours in all considered systems. A linear relationship between adsorption energy and integration of orbital overlaps of O and metals was observed, which indicates that the electronic structure controls adsorption behaviours of oxygen on surfaces of γ-TiAl and provides a guidance to improve the oxidation resistance of γ-TiAl based alloys.

Abstract:TiO2 films were loaded on Ti, Al and glass from Ti(OC4H9)(4) precursor by dip-coating method, represented by TiO2/Ti, TiO2/Al and TiO2/G, respectively. XPS, AFM and phtotocatalytic reaction experiments were carried out to characterize the catalytic films. The films prepared on different substrates varies greatly in chemical composition because of the extravasation of Al, Na, Ca, and Si from Al and glass substrates, which also influences the agglomerating behavior of the precursor films, resulting in the difference of particle sizes and morphologies of TiO2 films. TiO2/Ti was proved to possess most stable photocatalytic activity, while TiO2/Al and TiO2/G deactivate obviously with the increase of photocatalytic experiment runs. It is concluded that accumulation of surface carbon species such as reactive intermediate was not the dominant cause of deactivation in this research. The remarkable leaching and chemical alternation of extravasated elements brought out intergranular corrosion of TiO2 films on Al and glass, leading to the flake-off of outmost TiO2 particles. The new surface contained three chemical states of Ti: Ti4+, Ti3+ and Ti2+, which was different from the new prepared TiO2 films with high activity, possessing only Ti4+.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) materials have been intensively studied in the past years because of many varied applications. This mini review article focuses on TiO2 micro and nano architectures with the prevalent crystal structures (anatase, rutile, brookite, and TiO2(B)), and summarizes the major advances in the surface and interface engineering and applications in environmental and electrochemical applications. We analyze the advantages of surface/interface engineered TiO2 micro and nano structures, and present the principles and growth mechanisms of TiO2 nanostructures via different strategies, with an emphasis on rational control of the surface and interface structures. We further discuss the applications of TiO2 micro and nano architectures in photocatalysis, lithium/sodium ion batteries, and Li-S batteries. Throughout the discussion, the relationship between the device performance and the surface/interface structures of TiO2 micro and nano structures will be highlighted. Then, we discuss the phase transitions of TiO2 nanostructures and possible strategies of improving the phase stability. The review concludes with a perspective on the current challenges and future research directions.

Abstract:The morphology and electronic structure of surface-segregated titanium oxides on Pt3Ti(lll) are presented. Core level photoemission spectra at grazing emission reveal two states of oxidation: a dominant and reducible four-valent oxide together with a small amount of a three-valent oxide is produced by oxidation in O-2 at and below 400 degrees C; an irreducible three-valent oxide by oxidation in O-2 at and above 450 degrees C. The ratio between the active four-valent and the inactive three-valent oxides decreases with increasing oxidation temperature. The probability for reduction by CO is almost unity for the Ti4+ oxide, and the conclusion must be that the four-valent oxide plays an active role for catalytic reactions. Scanning tunneling measurements relate these observations to changes in the dispersion and nucleation of the oxide overlayer, The four-valent oxide grows as islands with remaining areas open for CO adsorption while the three-valent oxide spreads on and blocks the crystal surface. Photoemission spectra relate these dispersion effects to an electronic interaction between the Ti3+ oxide and adjacent Pt atoms. The above observations are in accordance with the common picture of dispersion effects in titania-supported SMSI catalysts and prove that interfacial energies play a crucial role whether the dominant phase is metallic or an oxide.
Defect-induced Regulation of Crystal Growth and Phase Transition of TiO2 Synthesized from Ti-bearing Blast Furnace Slag

Abstract:Ti-bearing blast furnace slag (TBFS) is an essential secondary Ti resource for TiO2 production. However, the TiO2 is sintered and does not meet the pigment requirements. This study investigated the effect of surface/bulk distribution of defect structures on the crystal growth and phase transition of TiO2 based on the Rietveld method. For the defects of Xn+ (Al3+/Mg2+/Zn2+), the interstitial Xn+ (Xint) is mainly located on the surface of TiO2 particles and inhibits the crystal growth. The substituted Xn+ (Xsub) is primarily located in the bulk and promotes the phase transition. The radius of Xn+ affects the stability of Xint and determines the distribution of Xint/Xsub. Thus, the major defect structures of Al3+, Mg2+, and Zn2+ (increasing radius) are Alint, Mgint/Mgsub, and Znsub, respectively. Based on this, a new co-doping method was proposed. Co-doping modifies the distribution of Xint/Xsub to regulating the crystal growth and phase transition. Finally, TiO2 for pigment with a small particle size (220 ± 60 nm) and high rutile conversion (98.1%) was synthesized from TBFS. The results will help to optimize the process for producing TiO2 pigment from TBFS and provide new insights into the structure regulation of TiO2 materials.

Abstract:The reactivity of specific sites on rutile TiO2(110)−(1×1) surface and anatase TiO2(001)−(1×4) surface has been comparably studied by means of high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy. At the rutile TiO2(110)−(1×1) surface, we find the defects of oxygen vacancy provide distinct reactivity for O2 and CO2 adsorption, while the terminal fivefold-coordinated Ti sites dominate the photocatalytic reactivity for H2O and CH3OH dissociation. At the anatase TiO2(001)−(1×4) surface, the sixfold-coordinated terminal Ti sites at the oxidized surface seem to be inert in both O2 and H2O reactions, but the Ti-rich defects which introduce the Ti3+ state into the reduced surface are found to provide high reactivity for the reactions of O2 and H2O. By comparing the reactions on both rutile and anatase surfaces under similar experimental conditions, we find the reactivity of anatase TiO2(001) is actually lower than rutile TiO2(110), which challenges the conventional knowledge that the anatase (001) is the most reactive TiO2 surface. Our findings could provide atomic level insights into the mechanisms of TiO2 based catalytic and photocatalytic chemical reactions.
Role of point defects on the reactivity of reconstructed anatase titanium dioxide (001) surface

Abstract:The chemical reactivity of different surfaces of titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has been the subject of extensive studies in recent decades. The anatase TiO 2 (001) and its (1 × 4) reconstructed surfaces were theoretically considered to be the most reactive and have been heavily pursued by synthetic chemists. However, the lack of direct experimental verification or determination of the active sites on these surfaces has caused controversy and debate. Here we report a systematic study on an anatase TiO 2 (001)-(1 × 4) surface by means of microscopic and spectroscopic techniques in combination with first-principles calculations. Two types of intrinsic point defects are identified, among which only the Ti 3+ defect site on the reduced surface demonstrates considerable chemical activity. The perfect surface itself can be fully oxidized, but shows no obvious activity. Our findings suggest that the reactivity of the anatase TiO 2 (001) surface should depend on its reduction status, similar to that of rutile TiO 2 surfaces.

Abstract:The mechanism of agglomeration and dispersion of ul-trafine TiO2 particles are discussed. The transparent ultra-fine TiO2 is obtained through surface modification of ultra-fine TiO2 by using hydrated SiO2 as a modifier. The optimal modified conditions are pH: 8 ~ 9 the dosage of hydrated SiO2:4%-6%,TR:70-80 'C. The UV - shielding ability and acid - solubility of the product is determined. In addition ?the TEM photograph is discussed.

Abstract:Phase transformation of TiO2 from anatase to rutile is studied by UV Raman spectroscopy excited by 325 and 244 nm lasers, visible Raman spectroscopy excited by 532 nm laser, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). UV Raman spectroscopy is found to be more sensitive to the surface region of TiO2 than visible Raman spectroscopy and XRD because TiO2 strongly absorbs UV light. The anatase phase is detected by UV Raman spectroscopy for the sample calcined at higher temperatures than when it is detected by visible Raman spectroscopy and XRD. The inconsistency in the results from the above three techniques suggests that the anatase phase of TiO2 at the surface region can remain at relatively higher calcination temperatures than that in the bulk during the phase transformation. The TEM results show that small particles agglomerate into big particles when the TiO2 sample is calcined at elevated temperatures and the agglomeration of the TiO2 particles is along with the phase transformation from anatase to rutile. It is suggested that the rutile phase starts to form at the interfaces between the anatase particles in the agglomerated TiO2 particles; namely, the anatase phase in the inner region of the agglomerated TiO2 particles turns out to change into the rutile phase more easily than that in the outer surface region of the agglomerated TiO2 particles. When the anatase particles of TiO2 are covered with highly dispersed La2O3, the phase transformation in both the bulk and surface regions is significantly retarded, owing to avoiding direct contact of the anatase particles and occupying the surface defect sites of the anatase particles by La2O3.

Abstract:The TiO2 films loaded on Ti, At, stainless steel and glass substrates were prepared by the dip-coating method from the Ti(OC4H9)(4) precursor. The surface morphology, chemical composition, crystalline property, photoabsorption capacity and photocatatytic activity of the TiO2 films were characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), X-ray diffraction (XRD), diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis) and phtotocatalytic reaction experiments. The TiO2 films loaded on different substrates show different properties and all TiO2 films are of anatase. The mean TiO2 particle size of TiO2/Ti, TiO2/steel, TiO2/Al and TiO2/glass is 15.2, 20.5, 24.1 and 47.7 nm, respectively, and that of TiO2/Ti and TiO2/steel has narrow distribution. Only Ti and 0 were detected on the surface of TiO2/Ti and TiO2/Al, while substrate elements such as Fe, Na, Ca and Si were proved to exist on the surface of TiO2/steel and TiO2/glass. The films have similar absorption capacity in the UV range, and the photocatalytic activity for the benzamide degradation decreases in the order TiO2/Ti > TiO2/Al > TiO2/glass > TiO2/steel. Based on these experimental results, it can be considered that the agglomeration of the precursor films and the transference of substrate elements in the calcination stage cause the difference in properties of the TiO2 films loaded on different substrates.
