Abstract:This paper examines the rapid growth of China in the field of nanotechnology and the rise of collaboration between China and the US in this emerging domain. Chinese scientific papers in nanotechnology are analyzed to indicate overall trends, leading fields and the most prolific institutions. Patterns of China–US nanotechnology paper co-authorship are examined over the period 1990–2009, with an analysis of how these patterns have changed over time. The paper combines bibliometric analysis and science mapping. We find rapid development in the number of China–US co-authored nanotechnology papers as well as structural changes in array of collaborative nanotechnology sub-fields. Implications for both China and the US of this evolving relationship are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we use bibliometric methods and social network analysis to analyze the pattern of China-US scientific collaboration on individual level in nanotechnology. Results show that Chinese-American scientists have been playing an important role in China-US scientific collaboration. We find that China-US collaboration in nanotechnology mainly occurs between Chinese and Chinese-American scientists. In the co-authorship network, Chinese-American scientists tend to have higher betweenness centrality. Moreover, the series of polices implemented by the Chinese government to recruit oversea experts seems to contribute a lot to China-US scientific collaboration.

Abstract:Micro-and nano-photonics are advanced research topics of the 21st century right in the center of attention of the world's major developed countries, and will have significant and far-reaching impact on the future high-tech, national security, green energy and other areas. In recent years, the United States, European Union and other developed countries and regions have set up many major research plans for Micro and nano-photonics. Chinese scientists have also called on the government to establish relevant research programs to strengthen and improve the micro-and nano-photonics research in Chi-na.Micro-and nano-photonics combine the advanced research results of photonics and nano-technology, and is an indispensable science and technology discipline of the 21st century.Chinese scientists have achieved sig-nificant amounts of world-class research results in this field.In order to further investigate the impact of funda-mental theories and related key applications of Micro-and nano-photonics on the national economy in terms of advanced manufacturing and strategic resources, the Departments of Information Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Engineering Material Sciences, and the Policy Bureau of National Natural Science Founda-tion of China ( NSFC ) co-sponsored the 115 “Shuan-gqing forum”on“Micro-and nano-photonics”.38 scien-tists from 26 institutes and universities participate in this forum. Through in-depth discussions, the scientists summarized the key scientific problems in this field and explored the forefront research topics and funding strate-gy.A review on the forums is published in this special issue.

Abstract:USA and China are two leading countries engaged in nanotechnology research and development. They compete with each other for fruits in this innovative area in a parallel and compatible manner. Understanding the status and developmental prospects of nanotechnology in USA and China is important for policy-makers to decide nanotechnology priorities and funding, and to explore new ways for global cooperation on key issues. We here present the nanoscience and nanomedicine research and the related productivity measured by publications, and patent applications, governmental funding, policies and regulations, institutional translational research, industrial and enterprise growth in nanotechnology-related fields across China and USA. The comparison reveals some marked asymmetries of nanotechnology development in China and USA, which may be helpful for future directions to strengthen nanotechnology collaboration for both countries, and for the world as a whole.

Abstract:China’s remarkable gains in science over the past 25 years have been well documented but it is less well known that China and the United States have become each other’s top collaborating country. Science and technology has been a primary vehicle for growing the bilateral relationship between China and the United States since the opening of relations between the two countries in the late 1970s. During the early 2000s, the scientific relationship between China and the United States—as measured in coauthored papers—showed significant growth (Jin et al. in Journal of Shanxi University 30(2):295–302, 2007 ). Chinese scientists claim first authorship much more frequently than U.S. counterparts by the end of the decade. The sustained rate of increase of collaboration with one other country is unprecedented on the U.S. side. Even growth in relations with eastern European nations does not match the growth in the relationship between China and the United States. Both countries can benefit from the relationship, but for the U.S., greater benefit would come from a more targeted strategy.
Networks of Research Collaboration in China: Evidence from Nanotechnology Publication Activities, 1990-2006

Abstract:The article shows there has been exponential growth overall in nano publication in China, there has been only linear growth in international publication collaboration. Potential explanations for this include increased internal incentives for publication in China in WoS-listed journals and for Chinese researchers to return home. However, there are quality differences between articles by author and collaboration type. Statistical testing indicates that internationally collaborated articles, articles by scholars in Chinese Academy of Science or top 10 Chinese universities, and articles involved Hong Kong scholars are more likely published in journals with high impact factors (IF), and receive high citations. These findings help to highlight China's emerging strengths in nanotechnology and the role of network relations in underpinning these developments.

Abstract:China’s rise in science has aroused great interest in the research community and captured the attention of policy makers around the world. With its tremendous increase in research investment, fast growing SciTech workforce, and broadened access to international collaboration, China has become one of the most important contributors to global scientific knowledge. In 2016, China surpassed the United States as the largest producer of scientific articles indexed in Elsevier’s Scopus database (Tollefson, 2018; NSB, 2018). In terms of scientific articles indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), China surpassed the US as the number one knowledge producer in 2018 (Zhu & Liu, 2020).
Regional Development and Interregional Collaboration in the Growth of Nanotechnology Research in China

Abstract:China is becoming a leading nation in terms of its share of the world's publications in the emerging nanotechnology domain. This paper demonstrates that the international rise of China's position in nanotechnology has been underwritten by the emergence of a series of regional hubs of nanotechnology R&D activity within the country. We develop a unique database of Chinese nanotechnology articles covering the period 1990 to mid-2006 to identify the regional distribution of nanotechnology research in China. To build this database, a new approach was developed to clean and standardize the geographical allocation of Chinese publication records. We then analyze the data to understand the regional development of nanotechnology research in China over our study period and to map interregional and international research collaboration linkages. We find that the geographical distribution of China's domestic nanotechnology research is characterized by regional imbalance, with most of the leading regions located in eastern China, including not only Beijing and Shanghai but also a series of other new regional hubs. There is much less development of nanotechnology research in central and western China. Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong are among the leading Chinese regions for international nanotechnology research collaboration. Other Chinese nanotechnology regions are less focused on international collaboration, although they have developed domestic interregional collaborations. Although new regional research hubs have emerged in the nanotechnology domain, the paper notes that their concentration in eastern China reinforces existing imbalances in science and technology capabilities in China, and in turn this may further reinforce the dominant position of eastern China in the commercialization of new technologies such as nanotechnology.

Abstract:The United States (US) and the People's Republic of China (China) have the most patents in nanotechnology in their own depositories and overall in the international depositories. This paper compares nanotechnology landscapes between 2001 and 2017 as reflected in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). It presents the evolution of nanotechnology patent development in the US and China, the differences between nanotechnology topics addressed in the USPTO and CNIPA patents, key players in nanotechnology fields in both domestic and foreign markets, and the player collaboration patterns. Bibliographic, content, and social network analyses are used. The longitudinal changes of granted patents and ranked countries, patent families, technology fields, and key players in domestic and overseas markets are outlined. Collaboration networks of assignees and the influential players have been identified based on network parameters. Results show that the US market attracts more international collaborations and has a higher level of knowledge exchange and resource sharing than the Chinese market. Companies play a vital role with regard to US nanotechnology development, resulting in more within-industry collaborations. In contrast, universities and research institutes are the dominant contributors to China's nanotechnology development, leading to more academia-industry collaborations in China's market.

Abstract:Purpose – Recent studies report that China is becoming a leading nation in the quantity of scientific output, including in the emerging field of nanotechnology. In nanotechnology, bibliometric measures based on citations also indicate improvements in the research impacts of Chinese scientific papers. Abstract:Last July 2–4, we had a successful meeting—the 4 th Sino-US Nano Workshop —at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in Hefei, Anhui. This event brought together more than 40 scientists both from the United States and China to exchange information related to nanomaterials research. Our guests also include Dr. David Flanagan, the Editor in Chief of Advanced Functional Materials , who gave a wonderful talk on writing and publishing of scientifi c papers. We had a three-full-day program devoted to the synthesis of functional nanomaterials and their applications in areas as diverse as biomedical research, energy, electronics, photonics, and photovoltaics.
Evolving landscape of US-China science collaboration: Convergence and divergence

Abstract:International research collaboration among global scientific powerhouses has exhibited a discernible trend towards convergence in recent decades. Notably, the US and China have significantly fortified their collaboration across diverse scientific disciplines, solidifying their status as a national-level duopoly in global scientific knowledge production. However, recent reports hint at a potential decline in collaboration between these two giants, even amidst the backdrop of advancing global convergence. Understanding the intricate interplay between cooperation and disparity within the US-China relationship is vital for both academia and policy leaders, as it provides invaluable insights into the potential future trajectory of global science collaboration. Despite its significance, there remains a noticeable dearth of quantitative evidence that adequately encapsulates the dynamism across disciplines and over time. To bridge this knowledge gap, this study delves into the evolving landscape of interaction between the US and China over recent decades. This investigation employs two approaches, one based on paper identifiers and the other on researcher identifiers, both obtained from bibliometric data sourced from OpenAlex. From both approaches, our findings unveil the unique and dynamic nature of the US-China relationship, characterised by a collaboration pattern initially marked by rapid convergence, followed by a recent phase of divergence.

Abstract:China's status as a scientific power, particularly in the emerging area of nanotechnology, has become widely accepted in the global scientific community. The role of knowledge spillover in China's nanotechnology development is generally assumed, albeit without much convincing evidence. Very little has been investigated on the different mechanisms of knowledge spillover. Utilizing both cross-sectional data and longitudinal data of 77 Chinese nanoscientists’ publications, this study aims to differentiate individual effects from the effect of international collaboration on the research performance of Chinese researchers. The study finds evidence in support of the “birds of a feather flock together” argument – that China's best scientists collaborate at international level. It also finds that collaboration across national boundaries has a consistently positive effect on China's nano research quality with a time-decaying pattern. Language turns out to be the most influential factor impacting the quality or visibility of Chinese nano research. Policy implications on research evaluation, human capital management, and public research and development allocation are also discussed in the end.

Abstract:China has become the fifth leading nation in terms of its share of the world's scientific publications. The citation rate of papers with a Chinese address for the corresponding author also exhibits exponential growth. More specifically, China has become a major player in critical technologies like nanotechnology. Although it is difficult to delineate nanoscience and nanotechnology, we show that China has recently achieved a position second only to that of the USA. Funding for R&D has been growing exponentially, but since 1997 even more in terms of business expenditure than in terms of government expenditure. It seems that the Chinese government has effectively used the public-sector research potential to boost the knowledge-based economy of the country. Thus, China may be achieving the ("Lisbon") objectives of the transition to a knowledge-based economy more broadly and rapidly than its western counterparts. Because of the sustained increase in Chinese government funding and the virtually unlimited reservoir of highly-skilled human resources, one may expect a continuation of this growth pattern in the near future.

Abstract:The large amount of data concerning China-US co-authored papers in science and technology from the year of 1978 to 2005 have been collected,organized and analized in a thorough way by applying the bibliometric research method.The total scale,ratio and their changes,scientific disciplines,participating agencies and publishing journals of the co-authored papers in the past and the present have been statistically ranked and evaluated as a preliminary study on the performance evaluation of the international cooperation in science and technology and as a try to upgrade the scientific level of the strategic decision-making in the field of international S&T cooperation.

Abstract:It has been about 30 years since China adopted an open-up and reform policy for global competition and collaboration. This opening-up policy is accompanied by a spectacular growth of the country’s economy as well as visibility in the world’s scientific literature. Also China’ competitiveness in scientific research has grown, and is mirroring the development of the country’s economy. On the other hand, international collaboration of most countries dramatically increased during the last two decades and accompanied the growth of science in emerging economies. Thus the question arises of whether growth of competitiveness in research is accompanied by an intensification of collaboration in China as well. In the present study we analyse the dynamics and the national characteristics of China’s co-operation in a global context. We also study research profile and citation impact of international collaboration with respect to the corresponding domestic ‘standards’.
