Abstract:In this paper, we use bibliometric methods and social network analysis to analyze the pattern of China-US scientific collaboration on individual level in nanotechnology. Results show that Chinese-American scientists have been playing an important role in China-US scientific collaboration. We find that China-US collaboration in nanotechnology mainly occurs between Chinese and Chinese-American scientists. In the co-authorship network, Chinese-American scientists tend to have higher betweenness centrality. Moreover, the series of polices implemented by the Chinese government to recruit oversea experts seems to contribute a lot to China-US scientific collaboration.

Abstract:This paper examines the rapid growth of China in the field of nanotechnology and the rise of collaboration between China and the US in this emerging domain. Chinese scientific papers in nanotechnology are analyzed to indicate overall trends, leading fields and the most prolific institutions. Patterns of China–US nanotechnology paper co-authorship are examined over the period 1990–2009, with an analysis of how these patterns have changed over time. The paper combines bibliometric analysis and science mapping. We find rapid development in the number of China–US co-authored nanotechnology papers as well as structural changes in array of collaborative nanotechnology sub-fields. Implications for both China and the US of this evolving relationship are discussed.

A Comparative Study of Domestic and Cross‐country Impact of Chinese and U.S. Publications in Chemistry

Abstract:ABSTRACTBased on publications in Chemistry in 2015, this paper investigated the citation impact on domestic and foreign scholarly communities of Chinese and US publications, and to what extent does such impact relate to international collaboration and government funding. First‐ or corresponding authorship in international collaboration is defined as dominance and is taken into consideration. Citations to publications are designated as domestic citations (Chinese or US citations), partner citations or other citations according to overlap of countries of citing and cited publications. Significant difference exists in the two countries. Most citations of Chinese publications are from domestic and partner countries, with domestic citations being the mainstay. In contrast, US papers receive more other citations than domestic or partner citations, and citations from partner countries contribute significantly. US papers have higher global impact than those of China. High domestic citation propensity is associated with non‐international collaboration, dominance of focal country in international collaboration, and national funding support. Such phenomenon is more pronounced in Chinese papers. In other words, citation impact of Chinese publications is more limited in domestic community, whereas that of the US is more global.
Comparing nanotechnology landscapes in the US and China: a patent analysis perspective

Abstract:The United States (US) and the People's Republic of China (China) have the most patents in nanotechnology in their own depositories and overall in the international depositories. This paper compares nanotechnology landscapes between 2001 and 2017 as reflected in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). It presents the evolution of nanotechnology patent development in the US and China, the differences between nanotechnology topics addressed in the USPTO and CNIPA patents, key players in nanotechnology fields in both domestic and foreign markets, and the player collaboration patterns. Bibliographic, content, and social network analyses are used. The longitudinal changes of granted patents and ranked countries, patent families, technology fields, and key players in domestic and overseas markets are outlined. Collaboration networks of assignees and the influential players have been identified based on network parameters. Results show that the US market attracts more international collaborations and has a higher level of knowledge exchange and resource sharing than the Chinese market. Companies play a vital role with regard to US nanotechnology development, resulting in more within-industry collaborations. In contrast, universities and research institutes are the dominant contributors to China's nanotechnology development, leading to more academia-industry collaborations in China's market.

Abstract:This article evaluates the competitiveness of China, during the period between 2004 and 2008, through patent performances of six technology fields, including the fields of Chemistry, Computer and Communication, Biotechnology and Pharmaceuticals, Electrical and Electronic Machinery, Mechanical, and Other. For the purpose of observing the patent trends and the major companies in above six fields, various indicators are employed to evaluate patent quality, including the Patent Count, the Current Impact Index, the Patent Share, the Patent Activity, and also two novel indicators, the Essential Patent Index and the Essential Technological Strength. According to the share of patents, major enterprises of China in 2008 have been chosen for investigations. From these enterprises, essential assignees in each technology field are identified and analyzed to evaluate the performances. The findings reveal that the amount of patents from China issued by the United States has been increasing year by year. In addition, the avant-garde capacities of Electrical and Electronic Machinery and Computer and Communication are higher than that of other fields. Finally, it can be concluded that China has been upgrading its patent competitiveness step by step in recent years. Furthermore, Chinese local companies have been becoming the primary innovational strength of China.
The Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Innovation: Evidence from Patent Filings and Citations in China

Abstract:This paper studies how foreign direct investment (FDI) affects innovation in the host country, using matched firm-level patent data of Chinese firms. The data contain multidimensional in-formation about patent counts and citations, which, together with an identification strategy based on Lu et al. (2017), allows us to measure innovation comprehensively and to uncover the causal relationship. Our empirical analysis shows that FDI has positive intra-industry effects on the quantity and quality of innovation, as well as radical innovation, by Chinese firms. We show that these positive effects are driven by increases in competition, rather than by knowledge spillovers from FDI which is measured by patent citations between domestic firms and foreign invested enterprises (FIEs). We further investigate the inter-industry effects of FDI and find that FDI has positive vertical effects on innovation in upstream sectors through backward knowledge spillovers.

Abstract:Traditionally, the number of citations that a scholarly paper receives from other papers is used as the proxy of its scientific impact. Yet citations can come from domains outside the scientific community, and one such example is through patented technologies—paper can be cited by patents, achieving technological impact. While the scientific impact of papers has been extensively studied, the technological aspect remains less known in the literature. Here we aim to fill this gap by presenting a comparative study on how 919 thousand biomedical papers are cited by U.S. patents and by other papers over time. We observe a positive correlation between citations from patents and from papers, but there is little overlap between the two domains in either the most cited papers, or papers with the most delayed recognition. We also find that the two types of citations exhibit distinct temporal variations, with patent citations lagging behind paper citations for a median of 6 years for the majority of papers. Our work contributes to the understanding of the technological impact of papers.

Abstract:Academic journals,by which academic influence of a country is indicated,provide important sources for research.The number of papers collected by the three US science citation databases(SCI,SSCI,AHCI) is an important index of a discipline's international academic influence.An analysis of academic papers indexed by the three science citation databases over the last three decades in our country reveals that great gaps exist in the number of papers indexed by each database,which embodies great imbalance in the development and international academic influence of the three subjects,of which natural science developed at a high speed,social science developed rapidly,and art and humanities developed slowly.In order to enhance the international academic influence of our country,policies should be stipulated to balance the development of different subjects.The way to classify subjects should be reformed: the philosophical social science should be divided into two subjects——social science and art humanities.Correct methods should be used in evaluating different subjects and measures should be taken to assist academic journals in entering international citation databases and thereby promote the internationalization.

Abstract:This article assesses the innovation competition characteristics in China through patent analysis. The Chinese patents in US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) database from 2004 to 2008 are used for analysis. The findings suggest that the innovation competitiveness of China has increased in recent years. The absolute number of patents has shown the trend of rapid growth, but the share of utility patents is much lower than the global share. Based on analysis of technology fields, two main high innovation technology fields of China are the Electrical and Electronic machinery (E&E) and Computer and Communication (C&C) fields. The main international technology cooperation partner in these two fields is Taiwan. Moreover, Chinese patent output in the US is concentrated on a few large enterprises, and the patent proportions of the top 5, 15 and 30 assignees have increased each year. The top 5 patent assignees demonstrate strong innovation competitiveness in C&C and E&E fields. Among the large assignees are Hong Fu Jin Precision in both E&E and C&C fields, and Fu Zhun Precision and Huawei Technologies in E&E and C&C field respectively.

Abstract:The large amount of data concerning China-US co-authored papers in science and technology from the year of 1978 to 2005 have been collected,organized and analized in a thorough way by applying the bibliometric research method.The total scale,ratio and their changes,scientific disciplines,participating agencies and publishing journals of the co-authored papers in the past and the present have been statistically ranked and evaluated as a preliminary study on the performance evaluation of the international cooperation in science and technology and as a try to upgrade the scientific level of the strategic decision-making in the field of international S&T cooperation.

Abstract:The study focuses on publication activity, citation impact and citation links between publications and patents in biotechnology. The European Union (EU), US, Japan and China are the most important global players. However, the landscape is changing since the EU and the US are losing ground because of challenges from a group of emerging economies. National profiles differ between the two groups of main players and upcoming countries; the focus on red biotechnology in the US and Europe is contrasted by propensity for white and green technology in Asia. Furthermore, the subject profile of biotechnology papers citing patents and cited by patents as well as the relationship between patent citations and citation impact in scientific literature is explored. Papers that cite patents tend to reflect propensity towards white biotechnology while patent-cited publications have a higher relative share in red biotechnology. No significant difference concerning the citation impact of publications `citing patents' and `not citing patents' can be found. This is contrasted by the observation that patent-cited papers perform distinctly better in terms of standard bibliometric indicators than comparable publications that are not linked to technology in this direction.
Independent research of China in Science Citation Index Expanded during 1980–2011

Abstract:The study explores the characteristics of China's independent research articles published from 1980 to 2011, based on the database of Science Citation Index Expanded. The publication outputs of seven major industrialized countries including Canada, France, Japan, Germany, Italy, the UK, and the USA were compared with China. Annual production, field performance, research emphases and trends, top articles, as well as main institutional and individual contributors by its top cited articles were analyzed. Some newly developed indicators related to words in title, author keywords, KeyWords Plus, first author, corresponding author, and Y-index were employed to provide in-depth information on topic and author contributions. Results showed that China has been closing the gap with the USA with the greatest growth, and has stood the second since 2006. Most top cited articles were published in 2000s, made up approximately seven tenths of total articles. Pronounced activities were found in chemistry and physics related categories. The core categories included multidisciplinary chemistry, physical chemistry, multidisciplinary materials science, and applied physics. Moreover, China's performance of nanotechnology and science, especially carbon nanotubes, nanoparticles, nanowires, and nanostructures showed dramatic growth. Six top articles with at least 1000 citations were examined, and were observed to concern medicine, nanotube, and adsorption. In addition, main contributing institutions and authors were also revealed and evaluated. Chinese Academy of Sciences played a dominant role, and Tsinghua University, Peking University and five universities in Hong Kong showed good scientific performance.
Industry Evolution and Key Technologies in China Based on Patent Analysis

Abstract:Patents are the manifestation of the industry's research and development (R&D) endeavor; therefore, this paper studies the industry evolution of and key technologies in China from the perspective of patent analysis. Patents in six types of industries, including Chemical (excluding Drugs), Computers and Communications, Drugs and Medical, Electrical and Electronics (E&E), Mechanical, and Others are analyzed in this study. Findings from the analysis show a steady increase of US granted utility patents in China as well as percentage of these patents in the world over the period between 2003 and 2008. All the above industries in China have been growing rapidly during this period, which is very different from the global industry development. Despite the rapid development, the citation rates of these patents have been low, reflecting a need for improvement in the quality of patents and R&D performance for these six industries in China in order to exert more influence in the industry world. The analysis on patents also reveals China's industry distribution to be similar to the global industry distribution, with the exception of E&E industry which weights over one third of the total patents in technologies. The E&E industry is also the field with largest economic growth which rises more rapidly after 2006 with a sudden increase of patents in USPC 361. Detailed tracking of the key technology evolution reveals that 90% of the newly issued patents in USPC 361 after 2006 are owned by Foxconn Technology Co., Ltd, pointing to an unbalanced R&D environment in China's E&E industry sector. By providing the insight into the evolution of China's industrial and technological development through the perspective of patent analysis, this paper hopes to provide an objective statistic reference for future policy directions and academic researches.

Abstract:The impact of international collaboration on research performance has been extensively explored over the past two decades. Most research, however, focuses on quantity and citation-based indicators. Using the turnover of keywords, this study develops an integrative approach, tracking and visualizing the shift of the research stream, and tests it within the context of U.S.-China collaboration in nanotechnology. The results show evidence in support of the linkage between the emergence of a new research stream of Chinese researchers when there is U.S.-China collaboration. We also find that the triggered research stream diffused further via extended coauthorship. Policy implications for science and technology development and resource allocation in the United States and China are discussed.

Abstract:China’s rise in science has aroused great interest in the research community and captured the attention of policy makers around the world. With its tremendous increase in research investment, fast growing SciTech workforce, and broadened access to international collaboration, China has become one of the most important contributors to global scientific knowledge. In 2016, China surpassed the United States as the largest producer of scientific articles indexed in Elsevier’s Scopus database (Tollefson, 2018; NSB, 2018). In terms of scientific articles indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), China surpassed the US as the number one knowledge producer in 2018 (Zhu & Liu, 2020).

Abstract:This paper examines a number of forces that have possibly contributed to the explosive growth of Chinese patenting over the past decade. After a review of previous hypotheses and conventional wisdom, this study proposes an additional explanation and argues that patent subsidy programs implemented by each provincial region have played an important role in the growth of Chinese patenting. This institutional change, taking place at the province-level, has induced an increase in patent propensity among not only firms, universities, and research institutes, but also individuals. Empirical evidence based on publicly available data provides solid support for this argument. It was also found that a larger fraction of applications are granted patent rights since the implementation of such programs, suggesting that reduction in patent application quality may not be a serious concern, unless the criteria used for patent examination have been lowered.

Abstract:China’s remarkable gains in science over the past 25 years have been well documented but it is less well known that China and the United States have become each other’s top collaborating country. Science and technology has been a primary vehicle for growing the bilateral relationship between China and the United States since the opening of relations between the two countries in the late 1970s. During the early 2000s, the scientific relationship between China and the United States—as measured in coauthored papers—showed significant growth (Jin et al. in Journal of Shanxi University 30(2):295–302, 2007 ). Chinese scientists claim first authorship much more frequently than U.S. counterparts by the end of the decade. The sustained rate of increase of collaboration with one other country is unprecedented on the U.S. side. Even growth in relations with eastern European nations does not match the growth in the relationship between China and the United States. Both countries can benefit from the relationship, but for the U.S., greater benefit would come from a more targeted strategy.
Trace on Both Sides: a Two-Step Text Mining Method to Identify Academic Inventors’ Patent–paper Pairs

Abstract:The convergence of knowledge in scientific discovery and technological development is one of the most concerning issues in the studies of technology innovation. However, due to the challenges in constructing the appropriate datasets, discussions surrounding the interaction between science and technology pay limited attention to understanding the origin and impact of the patent–paper pairs (PPP) that denote the similar finding. This paper develops a two-step method to combine the patent data in PATSTAT and paper data in Scopus to identify the PPP from 1980 to 2022. Our study investigates 67,579 academic inventors who are involved with 3,045,001 papers (of which 2,236,515 have corresponding patents) and 506,820 patents (of which 292,904 have corresponding papers) and then creates the most extensive database with 14,137,072 PPP. Our dataset reveals that there is rapid development of PPP worldwide since the year 2000. Furthermore, there has been a significant reduction in the diffusion time from papers to patents. Papers and patents in dual disclosure exhibit significantly higher level of academic and technical impact. The constructed dataset is compatible with current scientific and patent datasets, accelerating and expanding its utility as a data source for studying the relationship between industrial development and academic discovery.
