Abstract:Algorithms to generate a triangular or a quadrilateral interpolant with G 1 -continuity are given in this paper for arbitrary scattered data with associated normal vectors over a prescribed triangular or quadrilateral decomposition. The interpolants are constructed with a general method to generate surfaces from moving Bézier curves under geometric constraints. With the algorithm, we may obtain interpolants in complete symbolic parametric forms, leading to a fast computation of the interpolant. A dynamic interpolation solid modelling software package DISM is implemented based on the algorithm which can be used to generate and manipulate solid objects in an interactive way.
Shape Aware Normal Interpolation for Curved Surface Shading from Polyhedral Approximation

Abstract:Independent interpolation of local surface patches and local normal patches is an efficient way for fast rendering of smooth curved surfaces from rough polyhedral meshes. However, the independently interpolating normals may deviate greatly from the analytical normals of local interpolating surfaces, and the normal deviation may cause severe rendering defects when the surface is shaded using the interpolating normals. In this paper we propose two novel normal interpolation schemes along with interpolation of cubic Bézier triangles for rendering curved surfaces from rough triangular meshes. Firstly, the interpolating normal is computed by a Gregory normal patch to each Bézier triangle by a new definition of quadratic normal functions along cubic space curves. Secondly, the interpolating normal is obtained by blending side-vertex normal functions along side-vertex parametric curves of the interpolating Bézier surface. The normal patches by these two methods can not only interpolate given normals at vertices or boundaries of a triangle but also match the shape of the local interpolating surface very well. As a result, more realistic shading results are obtained by either of the two new normal interpolation schemes than by the traditional quadratic normal interpolation method for rendering rough triangular meshes.

Abstract:Interpolating an arbitrary topology mesh by a smooth surface plays important role in geometric modeling and computer graphics. In this paper we present an efficient new algorithm for constructing Catmull–Clark surface that interpolates a given mesh. The control mesh of the interpolating surface is obtained by one Catmull–Clark subdivision of the given mesh with modified geometric rule. Two methods—push-back operation based method and normal-based method—are presented for the new geometric rule. The interpolation method has the following features: (1) Efficiency: we obtain a generalized cubic B-spline surface to interpolate any given mesh in a robust and simple manner. (2) Simplicity: we use only simple geometric rule to construct control mesh for the interpolating subdivision surface. (3) Locality: the perturbation of a given vertex only influences the surface shape near this vertex. (4) Freedom: for each edge and face, there is one degree of freedom to adjust the shape of the limit surface. These features make interpolation using Catmull–Clark surfaces very simple and thus make the method itself suitable for interactive free-form shape design.
Geometric Interpolation by PH Curves with Quadratic or Quartic Rational Normals

Abstract:Pythagorean-hodograph (PH) curves have nice properties and have found important applications in geometric modeling and CNC machining. While the unit normals of PH curves of degree n are generally rational curves of degree n−1, this paper investigates PH curves of arbitrary degrees but with only quadratic rational unit normals when the curves are convex or with quartic rational unit normals when the curves have single inflection points. PH curves with quadratic or quartic rational normals have simple Gauss maps and hodographs of the curves are given by low degree tangent vector fields together with simple real scaling functions. Practical algorithms for interpolation of point-normal pairs or point-normal-curvature pairs together with unit normals at selected parameter coordinates or at inflection points by the investigated PH curves without or with the constraint of arc lengths have been given. The parameters for defining the interpolating PH curves are either obtained directly from the input data or by solving simple linear systems. This method of PH curve interpolation has unique solutions and the shapes of the interpolating PH curves are controlled well by the interpolated data. Even though the interpolating curves may have cusps, the regularity of the PH curves can be checked easily based on the signs of the real scaling functions within the hodographs.

Abstract:Estimating principal curvatures and principal directions of a smooth surface represented by a triangular mesh is an important step in many CAD or graphics related tasks. This paper presents a new method for curvature tensor estimation on a triangular mesh by replacing flat triangles with triangular parametric patches. An improved local interpolation scheme of cubic triangular Bézier patches to vertices and vertex normals of triangle meshes is developed. Piecewise parametric surfaces that have C0 continuity across boundary curves of adjacent patches and G1 continuity at the joint vertices are obtained by the interpolation scheme. A closed form expression of Taubin integral–a 3×3 symmetric matrix in integral formulation–is derived based on the piecewise parametric surfaces. Principal curvatures and principal directions are then computed from the Taubin integral. The proposed method does not need to parameterize data points or solve a linear system which is usually required by other surface fitting methods. Compared to several state-of-the-art curvature estimation methods, the proposed method can generate more accurate results for general surface meshes. The experiments have demonstrated its accuracy, robustness and effectiveness.
Geometric Hermite Interpolation by a Family of Intrinsically Defined Planar Curves

Abstract:This paper proposes techniques of interpolation of intrinsically defined planar curves to Hermite data. In particular, a family of planar curves corresponding to which the curvature radius functions are polynomials in terms of the tangent angle are used for the purpose. The Cartesian coordinates, the arc lengths and the offsets of this type of curves can be explicitly obtained provided that the curvature functions are known. For given G1 or G2 boundary data with or without prescribed arc lengths the free parameters within the curvature functions can be obtained just by solving a linear system. By choosing low order polynomials for representing the curvature radius functions, the interpolating curves can be spirals that have monotone curvatures or fair curves with small numbers of curvature extremes. Several examples of shape design or curve approximation using the proposed method are presented.

Abstract:Subdivision surfaces are generated by repeated approximation or interpolation from initial control meshes. In this paper, two new non-linear subdivision schemes, face based subdivision scheme and normal based subdivision scheme, are introduced for surface interpolation of triangular meshes. With a given coarse mesh more and more details will be added to the surface when the triangles have been split and refined. Because every intermediate mesh is a piecewise linear approximation to the final surface, the first type of subdivision scheme computes each new vertex as the solution to a least square fitting problem of selected old vertices and their neighboring triangles. Consequently, sharp features as well as smooth regions are generated automatically. For the second type of subdivision, the displacement for every new vertex is computed as a combination of normals at old vertices. By computing the vertex normals adaptively, the limit surface is G1 smooth. The fairness of the interpolating surface can be improved further by using the neighboring faces. Because the new vertices by either of these two schemes depend on the local geometry, but not the vertex valences, the interpolating surface inherits the shape of the initial control mesh more fairly and naturally. Several examples are also presented to show the efficiency of the new algorithms.

Abstract:Interpolation of data points is a fundamental problem in the field of CAD/CAM, geometric modeling and computer graphics and so on [1, 11-19]. Sampled or given data points are usually interpolated by using B-splines in many applications [1, 2, 3, 11-16, 19]. However, we also need to interpolate a set of infinitive data points, for instance, pieces of surfaces, textures, tiling and continuous functions defined on a subset of Euclidean space. Here we interpolate some surfaces as a whole instead of some sampled data points. The problem of finding fillet surfaces for a set of given surfaces can be considered as an example. We aim to construct a smooth surface in the whole domain, which interpolates these given surfaces defined on some sub-domains. In fact, some special cases have already been studied with different methods and view points. Given four boundary curves and corresponding derivatives along the input curves, the Coons patches are bicubically blended with the given curve data which consists of infinite data points [1, 5]. The CBarnhill, Birkhoff and Gordon approach for triangular Coons patches can be explained as follows. Suppose we are given three boundary curves. We seek a surface that interpolates to all three of them, namely, a transfinite triangular interpolant [1, 6]. More Coons type interpolants are proposed over triangles, and a general interpolant called N-sided surface patches is proposed by J. Gregory [7]. Abstract:Subdivision surface is an efficient geometric modelingtool that is generated by repeated approximation or interpolationfrom an initial control mesh. For each time of subdivisionthe old mesh will be split and the vertexes of the meshwill be refined for a new mesh. Most existing algorithms aimto construct a smooth subdivision surface by smoothing thevertexes of the split mesh. When some features are desired,special rules or parameters should often be applied.In this paper a new non-stationary subdivision method ispresented for surface modeling by recursive interpolationfrom an initial triangular control mesh. For each time ofsubdivision the mesh itself is a piecewise linear approximationto the final surface, and more details will be added tothe surface when the triangles have been split and replacedby more refined sub-triangles. We compute every interpolatededge vertex as a solution to the problem of least squarefitting of the edge and its neighboring triangles. Sharp featuresas well as flat regions can be kept well during subdivision.To obtain a visually smooth subdivision surface inthe limit, the normal at the vertexes of old meshes will beused as constraint for every time of subdivision. The mainadvantage of this new method is that the interpolated vertexesdepend on the local geometry of the mesh, but not thevalances of the mesh. The examples we have tested showthat the interpolating surfaces by this new method can inheritthe shape of initial course mesh more fairly and naturally.
Interpolating 2D Data Set by Conic Spline with G2 Continuity

Abstract:A method for interpolating 2D data with conic spline is introduced. The conic is represented by implicit equation. First, a method for interpolating two given end points as well as two given tangents at these points and a given curvature at an end point is presented; Second, a method for interpolating an open points sequence in a plane is offered; Last, a method for interpolating a closed points sequence in a plane is given. The method is very robust for any 2D data sequences. Overall G 2 continuity is held whether the data set is open or closed.

Abstract:As for curvature continuity curves, they are usually constructed by means of rational cubic curves. A method for interpolating global curvature continuity curves with conic segments is presented. Firstly, the curvature continuity conditions between two adjacent rational quadratic curve segments are derived. Secondly, an optimal algorithm is presented for solving out the tangent lines at every points of a closed point set in a plane. Finally, several examples are given out to illustrate the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:For the point cloud or mesh model with quad-partition,an algorithm of constructing smooth joining B-spline surfaces over arbitrary quadrilateral network was developed.Firstly,a curve network was constructed over the quad-partitioned model.Then for each quadrilateral patch,a B-spline surface was fitted from four boundary curves and internal data points.After obtaining G0 continuous surface patches network,a method of modifying the cross-boundary derivatives was proposed to make two adjacent surfaces to be C2 continuous along regular edges or G1 continuous along irregular edges.Applications showed that the presented algorithm is efficient and practical,and it has no restriction on the topology structure of the quadrilateral network;the reconstructed surfaces not only have good continuity but also capture the geometric details of the model and can satisfy the engineering requirements.
Generation of Interpolatory Smooth Bézier Patches over Quadrilateral Mesh Based on C-C Subdivision

Abstract:Constructing smooth surface over arbitrary topological quadrilateral mesh is an important issue in CAGD. This paper presents an algorithm for generating smoothly connected Bézier patches that interpolate the mesh vertices over a quadrilateral mesh based on C-C subdivision. The input quadrilateral mesh is taken as the initial control mesh of C-C subdivision, and the limit surface of C-C subdivision is converted into Bézier patches. For each facet of the quadrilateral mesh, a Bézier patch is obtained. The Bézier patches are G 1-continuous along boundaries connecting to extraordinary points and C 2-continuous everywhere else. For resolving the shrinking problem of C-C subdivision, a recursive method to expand the initial control mesh is proposed based on the deviation analysis. The final surface generated from the expanded mesh interpolates the vertices of the input quadrilateral mesh. The experimental data show that the presented algorithm is effective and the constructed surface has good smoothness and continuity. It can be well applied to reconstruct smooth surface from quadrilateral mesh.

Abstract:The geometric interpolation algorithm is proposed by Maekawa et al. in [Maekawa T, Matsumoto Y, Namiki K. Interpolation by geometric algorithm. Computer-Aided Design 2007:39:313-23]. Without solving a system of equations, the algorithm generates a curve (surface) sequence, of which the limit curve (surface) interpolates the given data points. However, the convergence of the algorithm is a conjecture in the reference above, and demonstrated by lots of empirical examples. In this paper, we prove the conjecture given in the reference in theory, that is, the geometric interpolation algorithm is convergent for a blending curve (surface) with normalized totally positive basis, under the condition that the minimal eigenvalue lambda(min)(D(k)) of the collocation matrix D(k) of the totally positive basis in each iteration satisfies lambda(min)(D(k)) >= alpha > 0. As a consequence, the geometric interpolation algorithm is convergent for Bezier, B-spline, rational Bezier, and NURBS curve (surface) if they satisfy the condition aforementioned, since Bernstein basis and B-spline basis are both normalized totally positive. Abstract:This paper presents a new interpolatory subdivision scheme for quadrilateral meshes based on a 1–4 splitting operator. The scheme generates surfaces coincident with those of the Kobbelt interpolatory subdivision scheme for regular meshes. A new group of rules are designed for computing newly inserted vertices around extraordinary vertices. As an extension of the regular masks,the new rules are derived based on a reinterpretation of the regular masks. Eigen‐structure analysis demonstrates that subdivision surfaces generated using the new scheme are C1 continuous and, in addition, have bounded curvature.

Abstract:Surface reconstruction is needed in many applications, and very often, the reconstructed surface is required to be of low, degree so that the surface can be computed efficiently and robustly. However, reconstructing surfaces with lower degrees are much more difficult than with higher degrees. The C-r continuous Hermite interpolant has to use a rather high polynomial degree, d greater than or equal to 4r + 1, unless each triangle in the triangulation is subdivided into several subtriangles. in this paper, we propose a method for constructing a G(1) quartic triangular B-B surface from a 3D triangulation. A sequence of triangulations are initially constructed by continuously removing a boundary vertex and all associated triangles from the 3D triangulation. According to this sequence of triangulations, an efficient algorithm is developed for constructing a smooth quartic surface over the 3D triangulation. The shape parameters in the G(1) condition are determined by a corresponding 2D triangulation of the 3D triangulation. This 2D triangulation has the sane topology as the 3D one. The new method has many advantages over existing methods.
Subdivision Interpolating Polygonization of Implicit Surfaces with Normal Meshes

Abstract:Normal mesh is a new fundamental surface description, which is multiresolution mesh where each level can be written as a normal offset from a coarser version. In this paper, we present an algorithm to create normal subdivision triangulations approximating implicit surfaces. Our algorithm begins from a coarse base mesh created by a space-division based polygonization method for implicit surface, and the base mesh is then optimized by Laplacian smoothing operator. Subsequently, the faces of the base mesh are subdivided iteratively and the newly created vertices are located on the implicit surface along a certain direction, which depends on the normals of vertices of the faces. Finally, we obtain a piecewise-linear approximation of the surface, which is a normal mesh with subdivision connectivity and provides a multi-resolution description of the implicit surface naturally. Under the same error restriction, the mesh has much fewer data with respect to the traditional polygonization algorithms
Scattered Points Interpolation with Globally Smooth B-Spline Surface using Iterative Knot Insertion

Abstract:Highlights•We introduce a new method to interpolate scattered 3D data points with a single B-spline surface patch, whose knot vectors are generated according to the parametrization of the scattered data points by iteratively inserting knots to the knot vectors. The generated knot vectors guarantee the existence of interpolation surfaces, while often using fewer control points.•Our method introduces a novel parameter δ to improve the stability of control point solving. By increasing δ, the interpolation errors will be reduced.•Since our knot vector construction algorithm guarantees the existence of the interpolation surface, the control points can be solved by a global fairing energy minimization procedure with strict interpolation constraints. Thus, a globally smooth B-spline surface can be generated.We introduce a new method to interpolate scattered 3D data points with a single B-spline surface patch which is globally smooth. Given a set of scattered 3D data points and their corresponding parametrization, our method first constructs a set α of B-spline bases using a weighted strategy, and inserts knots to the knot vectors based on α. Then, the knot insertion procedure is iterated until a set β of B-spline bases exists, which indicates the existence of the interpolation surface. Finally, by applying the fairing energy minimizing with interpolation constraints, a globally smooth B-spline surface which interpolates the data points can be produced. Experimental results demonstrate that the generated B-spline surfaces often have fewer control points than those of traditional methods, while keeping the scattered data points interpolated accurately.
