Abstract:A method for interpolating 2D data with conic spline is introduced. The conic is represented by implicit equation. First, a method for interpolating two given end points as well as two given tangents at these points and a given curvature at an end point is presented; Second, a method for interpolating an open points sequence in a plane is offered; Last, a method for interpolating a closed points sequence in a plane is given. The method is very robust for any 2D data sequences. Overall G 2 continuity is held whether the data set is open or closed.

Abstract:Algorithms to generate a triangular or a quadrilateral interpolant with G 1 -continuity are given in this paper for arbitrary scattered data with associated normal vectors over a prescribed triangular or quadrilateral decomposition. The interpolants are constructed with a general method to generate surfaces from moving Bézier curves under geometric constraints. With the algorithm, we may obtain interpolants in complete symbolic parametric forms, leading to a fast computation of the interpolant. A dynamic interpolation solid modelling software package DISM is implemented based on the algorithm which can be used to generate and manipulate solid objects in an interactive way.

Abstract:Euler spirals have linear varying curvature with respect to arc length and can be applied in fields such as aesthetics pleasing shape design, curve completion or highway design, etc. However, evaluation and interpolation of Euler spirals to prescribed boundary data is not convenient since Euler spirals are represented by Fresnel integrals but with no closed-form expression of the integrals. We investigate a class of Bézier or B-spline curves called Euler Bézier spirals or Euler B-spline spirals which have specially defined control polygons and approximate linearly varying curvature. This type of spirals can be designed conveniently and evaluated exactly. Simple but efficient algorithms are also given to interpolate G1 boundary data by Euler Bézier spirals or cubic Euler B-spline spirals.
High Accuracy Approximation of Helices by Quintic Curves

Abstract:In this paper we present methods for approximating a helix segment by quintic Bézier curves or quintic rational Bézier curves based on the geometric Hermite interpolation technique in space. The fitting curve interpolates the curvatures as well as the Frenet frames of the original helix at both ends. We achieve a high accuracy of the approximation by giving a proper parametrization of the curve, and the approximation order of the height function along the helix axis is 9 provided that the screw angle of the helix is fixed. Numerical examples are also presented to illustrate the efficiency of the new method.

Abstract:As for curvature continuity curves, they are usually constructed by means of rational cubic curves. A method for interpolating global curvature continuity curves with conic segments is presented. Firstly, the curvature continuity conditions between two adjacent rational quadratic curve segments are derived. Secondly, an optimal algorithm is presented for solving out the tangent lines at every points of a closed point set in a plane. Finally, several examples are given out to illustrate the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:To speed up the reconstruction of 3D dynamic scenes in an ordinary hardware platform, we propose an efficient framework to reconstruct 3D dynamic objects using a multiscale-contour-based interpolation from multi-view videos. Our framework takes full advantage of spatio-temporal-contour consistency. It exploits the property to interpolate single contours, two neighboring contours which belong to the same model, and two contours which belong to the same view at different times, corresponding to point-, contour-, and model-level interpolations, respectively. The framework formulates the interpolation of two models as point cloud transport rather than non-rigid surface deformation. Our framework speeds up the reconstruction of a dynamic scene while improving the accuracy of point-pairing which is used to perform the interpolation. We obtain a higher frame rate, spatio-temporal-coherence, and a quasi-dense point cloud sequence with color information. Experiments with real data were conducted to test the efficiency of the framework.

Abstract:3D data field reconstruction is a fundamental and an important step for volume modeling and analysis. The precision of reconstruction affects directly the accuracy of the following process such as data resampling and analysis. Based on the quasi-interpolation theory, we develop a novel estimate of the reconstruction error which fully explores the intrinsic information embedded in the volume data and have arrived at a minimum of the reconstruction error under the L2 measurement by conducting a global optimization. Experimental results on various examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in reducing the reconstruction error and retaining the high-frequency details of the dada field.

Abstract:The existing methods for visualizing volumetric data are mostly based on piecewise linear models. And all kinds of analysis based on them have to be substituted by coarse interpolations. So both accuracy and reliability of the traditional framework for visualization and analysis of volumetric data are far from our needs of digging information implied in volumetric data fields. In this paper, we propose a novel framework based on a C 2-continuous seven-directional box spline, under which reconstruction is of high accuracy and differential computations relative to analysis based on the reconstruction model are accurate. We introduce a polynomial differential operator to improve the reconstruction accuracy. In order to settle the difficulty of evaluating upon the seven-directional box spline, we convert it into Bézier form and propose effective theories and algorithms of extracting iso-surfaces, critical points and curvatures. Plentiful of examples are also given in this paper to illustrate that the novel framework is suitable for analysis, the improved reconstruction method has high accuracy, and our algorithms are fast and stable.

Abstract:With the advent of isogeometric analysis, the modeling of spline solids became an important topic. In this paper, we present a discrete volume parameterization method for tetrahedral (tet) mesh models and an iterative fitting algorithm with a B-spline solid. The discrete volume parameterization method maps the vertices of a tet mesh into a parameter domain by solving a system of linear equations. Each equation is explicitly constructed for an inner vertex in terms of the geometric information adjacent to the inner vertex. Moreover, we show the validity of the parameterization system of linear equations thus constructed. Next, because the number of tet mesh vertices is usually very large, we develop an iterative algorithm for fitting a tet mesh with a B-spline solid. The iterative algorithm exploits the geometric information of the control hexahedral (hex) mesh and the local support property of the spline function, so the total amount of computation in each iteration is unchanged when the number of control hex mesh vertices of the B-spline solid is increased. Therefore, the iterative fitting algorithm performs very well in incremental fitting of a tet mesh with a large number of vertices. Finally, four experimental examples presented in this paper show the efficiency and effectiveness of the developed algorithms.

Abstract:Spline quasi-interpolation (QI) is a general and powerful approach for the construction of low cost and accurate approximations of a given function. In order to provide an efficient adaptive approximation scheme in the bivariate setting, we consider quasi-interpolation in hierarchical spline spaces. In particular, we study and experiment the features of the hierarchical extension of the tensor-product formulation of the Hermite BS quasi-interpolation scheme. The convergence properties of this hierarchical operator, suitably defined in terms of truncated hierarchical B-spline bases, are analyzed. A selection of numerical examples is presented to compare the performances of the hierarchical and tensor-product versions of the scheme.

Abstract:A new method is presented to the B-spline surface presentation of an object defined by a set of parallel slices. For the application of B-spline inversion procedure, the methods about the data points generated are mainly introduced. The mesh of the data points is generated from interpolation curves of the vertex of the contour, which enable the interpolating surface to approximate the original object. It has the advantage that the reconstructed surface keep the smoothness in total longitudinal direction. The proposed method is also capable of handling the branching problem. Several experimental results corroborate the theory. The results show the image with high fidelity and the rendering speed are satisfactory and pleasing.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel shape interpolation approach based on the Poisson equation. We formulate the trajectory problem of shape interpolation as solving Poisson equations defined on a domain mesh. A non-linear gradient field interpolation method is proposed to take both vertex coordinates and surface orientation into account. With proper boundary conditions, the in-between shapes are reconstructed implicitly from the interpolated gradient fields, while traditional methods usually manipulate vertex coordinates directly. Besides of global shape interpolation, our method is also applicable to local shape interpolation, and can be further enhanced by incorporating with deformation. Our approach can generate visual pleasing and physical plausible morphing sequences with stable area and volume changes. Experimental results demonstrate that our technique can avoid the shrinkage problem appeared in linear shape interpolation.
Scattered Points Interpolation with Globally Smooth B-Spline Surface using Iterative Knot Insertion

Abstract:Highlights•We introduce a new method to interpolate scattered 3D data points with a single B-spline surface patch, whose knot vectors are generated according to the parametrization of the scattered data points by iteratively inserting knots to the knot vectors. The generated knot vectors guarantee the existence of interpolation surfaces, while often using fewer control points.•Our method introduces a novel parameter δ to improve the stability of control point solving. By increasing δ, the interpolation errors will be reduced.•Since our knot vector construction algorithm guarantees the existence of the interpolation surface, the control points can be solved by a global fairing energy minimization procedure with strict interpolation constraints. Thus, a globally smooth B-spline surface can be generated.We introduce a new method to interpolate scattered 3D data points with a single B-spline surface patch which is globally smooth. Given a set of scattered 3D data points and their corresponding parametrization, our method first constructs a set α of B-spline bases using a weighted strategy, and inserts knots to the knot vectors based on α. Then, the knot insertion procedure is iterated until a set β of B-spline bases exists, which indicates the existence of the interpolation surface. Finally, by applying the fairing energy minimizing with interpolation constraints, a globally smooth B-spline surface which interpolates the data points can be produced. Experimental results demonstrate that the generated B-spline surfaces often have fewer control points than those of traditional methods, while keeping the scattered data points interpolated accurately. Quasi-interpolation projectors for Subdivision Surfaces

Abstract:Subdivision surfaces are considered as an extension of splines to accommodate models with complex topologies, making them useful for addressing PDEs on models with complex topologies in isogeometric analysis. This has generated a lot of interest in the field of subdivision space approximation. The quasi-interpolation offers a highly efficient approach for spline approximation, eliminating the necessity of solving large linear systems of equations. Nevertheless, the lack of analytical expressions at extraordinary points on subdivision surfaces makes traditional techniques for creating B-spline quasi-interpolants inappropriate for subdivision spaces. To address this obstacle, this paper innovatively reframes the evaluation issue associated with subdivision surfaces as a correlation between subdivision matrices and limit points, offering a thorough method for quasi-interpolation specifically designed for subdivision surfaces. This developed quasi-interpolant, termed the subdivision space projection operator, accurately reproduces the subdivision space. We provide explicit quasi-interpolation formulas for various typical subdivision schemes. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the quasi-interpolants for Catmull-Clark and Loop subdivision exhibit third-order approximation in the (L_2) norm and second-order in the (L_\infty) norm. Furthermore, the modified Loop subdivision quasi-interpolant achieves optimal approximation rates in both the (L_2) and (L_\infty) norms.

Quasi-interpolation for the Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition

Abstract:The paper aims at proposing an efficient and stable quasi-interpolation based method for numerically computing the Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition of a vector field. To this end, we first explicitly construct a matrix kernel in a general form from polyharmonic splines such that it includes divergence-free/curl-free/harmonic matrix kernels as special cases. Then we apply the matrix kernel to vector decomposition via the convolution technique together with the Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition. More precisely, we show that if we convolve a vector field with a scaled divergence-free (curl-free) matrix kernel, then the resulting divergence-free (curl-free) convolution sequence converges to the corresponding divergence-free (curl-free) part of the Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition of the field. Finally, by discretizing the convolution sequence via certain quadrature rule, we construct a family of (divergence-free/curl-free) quasi-interpolants for the Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition (defined both in the whole space and over a bounded domain). Corresponding error estimates derived in the paper show that our quasi-interpolation based method yields convergent approximants to both the vector field and its Helmholtz-Hodge decomposition

Abstract:Multiquadric (MQ) quasi-interpolation has been studied extensively in the literature. However, the MQ quasi-interpolant is not well defined for periodic data, since its kernel (the MQ function) itself is not periodic. Note that in many applications, the data may arise from a closed curve (surface) and thus possess some kind of periodicity, for example, analysis of geodetic and meteorological data, constructing active contours, estimating the region of attraction of dynamical systems, and so on. Therefore, it is meaningful to construct a quasi-interpolant (whose kernel itself is periodic) for periodic data. Combining the construction techniques of the MQ quasi-interpolant and the trigonometric B-spline quasi-interpolant, the paper constructs such a quasi-interpolant. The quasi-interpolant couples together the periodicity of the trigonometric B-spline quasi-interpolant and the smoothness of the MQ quasi-interpolant. Moreover, both the quasi-interpolant and its derivatives are periodic. The quasi-interpolant covers the trigonometric B-spline quasi-interpolant as a special case. In addition, the error estimate shows that a proper shape parameter can be chosen such that the quasi-interpolant provides the same approximation order as a trigonometric B-spline quasi-interpolant for a periodic function. Furthermore, the quasi-interpolant gives better approximations to high-order derivatives than the trigonometric B-spline quasi-interpolant, as illustrated by numerical examples presented at the end of the paper.
Spline Model: A Hydrostatic/Non-Hydrostatic Dynamic Core with Space-Time Second-Order Precision and Its Exact Tests

Abstract:We present a new explicit quasi-Lagrangian integration scheme with the three-dimensional cubic spline function transform (transform = fitting + interpolation, referred to as the "spline format") on a spherical quasi-uniform longitude–latitude grid. It is a consistent longitude–latitude grid, and to verify the feasibility, accuracy, convergence, and stability of the spline format interpolation scheme for the upstream point on the longitude–latitude grid, which may map a quasi-uniform longitude–latitude grid, a set of ideal, exact test schemes is adopted, which are recognized and proven to be effective internationally. The equilibrium flow test, cross-polar flow test, and Rossby–Haurwitz wave test are used to illustrate the spline scheme uniformity to the linear scheme and to overcome the over-dense grid in the polar region and the non-singularity of the poles. The cross-polar flow test demonstrates that the geostrophic wind crosses the polar area correctly, including the South Pole and North Pole. A non-hydrostatic, fully compressible dynamic core is used to complete the density flow test, demonstrating the existence of a time-varying reference atmosphere and that the spline format can simulate highly nonlinear fine-scale transient flows. It can be compared for the two results of the density flow test between the solution with the spline format and the benchmark reference solution with the linear format. Based on the findings, the non-hydrostatic dynamic core with the spline format is recommended for adoption. When simulated for the flow over an ideal mountain, through the "topographic gravity wave test", the bicubic surface terrain and terrain-following height coordinates, time-split integration, and vector discrete decomposition can be derived successfully. These may serve as the foundations for a global, unified spline-format numerical model in the future.

Abstract:We present a local interpolation method in four dimensions utilising cubic splines. An extension of the three-dimensional tricubic method, the interpolated function has C$^1$ continuity and its partial derivatives are analytically accessible. The specific example of application of this work to a time-varying three-dimensional magnetic field is given, but this method would work equally well for a time-independent four-dimensional field. Implementations of both of these methods in the Python programming language are also available to download.
