Abstract:This paper explores the possibilities for critical policy analysis afforded by Lacanian discourse theory, with its emphasis on the unconscious and the agency of the letter, and considers its significance for critical policy analysis in education, in ways that complement and supplement the insights of post-structuralist discourse theory. To explore these possibilities, the paper examines the fantasies residing in neoliberal education policy’s vision of the knowledge economy, before focusing on a Lacanian analysis of the ideologies of knowledge and power manifested in the US KIPP (Knowledge is Power) charter school network, in order to think about how neoliberalism’s obsession with knowledge as control and mastery might be unsettled by what Lacan called ‘the sublimity of stupidity’ – by engagement with a psychoanalytic epistemology that recognizes how conscious knowledge may be interrupted by the unknowing of the unconscious and that places neoliberal regimes of knowledge in a dialectical relationship with non-knowledge, ignorance, stupidity and desire.

Abstract:As a famous French philosopher and psychoanalyst,Jacques lacan's subject theory is ap-plied not only to areas such as psychology,philosophy,literature,and also has a great influence on ed-ucation.The theory suggests that the establishment of the subject is stemmed from the image that the infant transforms the reflected image into the concept of self.After gradually identifying with the little otherness and big otherness,the unconsciousness of subject is finally formed.Looking from this per-spective,it is required to shed light upon the inter-subjectivity education,equal interactions and dia-logues between subjects.Furthermore,the transformation process from otherness to selfness should be monitored to prevent alienation.Finally,the teacher evaluation should be aiming to the enhancement of growth and development of teachers'self.

Cognitive“Mirror”and Educational Administration——An Interpretation of Lacan's Mirror Theory & Implication

Abstract:Lacan was the most important French philosopher and spiritual analyst. His theories have not only been increasingly applied to the contemporary psychology, philosophy, literature, but also have had a very profound influence on education and educational administration. His mirror theory argues that a baby internalizes the image in the mirror as the"self"and then gradually identifies with the image in the mirror and "small others"like faces and expressions of people around. And ultimately the subjective baby will gradually identify with the"big other", i.e. the entire linguistic symbol system around it. This theory has important implications for the school management. On the one hand, school development planning is affected by the cognitive "mirror"of different groups. And on the other hand, there exists the problem of alienation when the school's training objective as"the other"is internalized by students"themselves". In addition, the evaluation of teachers should focus on the development and growth of teachers"themselves".

Abstract:This article examines the ‘politics of difference’, a phrase now almost synonymous with postmodernism and the critique of the Enlightenment. The article provides a post-structuralist take on this critique arguing that a critique of Enlightenment values can lead to a deepening of democracy and using Foucault's notion of governmentality to elucidate the way political reason links the form of liberal government with the self-governing individual. It also examines emergent forms of post-coloniality with its emphasis on philosophies of difference and encounters with the Other and borrows the concept of the ‘multitude’ from Hardt and Negri, to talk about Derrida's ‘coming of world demoracy’.

Abstract:This article offers a broad philosophical and historical background to the dyad of social exclusion/inclusion by examining the analytics and politics of exclusion first by reference to Michel Foucault who studies the modern history of exclusion and makes it central to his approach in understanding the development of modern institutions of emerging liberal societies. Second, it traces the political ecology (and etiology) of 'social inclusion' as a response to the crisis of the welfare state and the French Republican tradition of social solidarity initiated in France by Rene Lenoir and subsequently adopted as a fundamental principle for the European social model. Third, it provides a philosophical discussion of inclusive education that draws the distinction between the legal and moral legitimation of rights and questions the moral justifications (or the lack of them) offered for the right to inclusive education.

Abstract:Formal early childhood education is a relatively modern institution to which increasing numbers of children are routinely exposed. Since the modern invention of childhood, the early childhood years have been increasingly established as a site for public and private investment in the name of individual and community development, the achievement of educational success, increased human productivity, and ultimately labor market productivity and excellence. As various forms of early childhood education have developed around the world, each has been imbued with values, perspectives, norms, and standards of its pioneers. They have also drawn upon and reinforced certain truths, knowledges, practices, and expectations about children, childhood, education, and society. As microcosms of society whose inhabitants are largely novice members of the communities of which they are part, teachers in early childhood education are routinely addressing issues of exclusion, injustice, and inequity with children and families. French historian and poststructural philosopher Michel Foucault’s (1926–1984) interests in the nexus of power-knowledge-truth and its consequences for life offer avenues for comprehending how modern institutions, such as systems of early childhood education, invest in and bring about certain forms of knowledge and practice. His methods of genealogical inquiry and discourse analysis make visible the workings of power as it moves on, in, and through human bodies. The perspectives made visible by Foucauldian analyses show how techniques, developed and applied within institutions, form humans in particular ways. Thus, it is possible to see the interplay between power-truth-knowledge, how things come to be, and how they may change.

Abstract:Since the beginning of the new century, there has been a trend of “learnification” in educational discourse and practice in many countries. As a new learning language, “learnification” has exerted various influences on the educational theories, practices, and policies of various countries. As a kind of “non-educational” language, “learning” confines education to learning, which can only touch a very small aspect of our existence as human beings. Education should open up more possibilities of existence, not just learning and becoming learners. The “educational” educational purpose should achieve balanced development in the three fields of qualification, socialization, and subjectification. Good education needs to focus on students’ subjectivity. With the increasing influence of the organization for economic cooperation and development, the world bank and other international organizations on global education governance and transnational education policy reference, we should carefully look at the impact of global education governance and measurement culture on education, continuously promote the democratization of teachers’ profession, transform evidence-based education into value education, and transform bureaucratic accountability policy into democratic accountability policy. Inspired by Dewey’s pragmatism, educational researchers should start with a meaningful understanding of educational practice rather than some “ideal” research concept, and explore the relationship between action and possible consequences by using evidence, ability, democracy, and wisdom.

Abstract:This article addresses the notion of ‘being critical’ in the application of the theoretical approach of Pierre Bourdieu to educational policy research. It stems from a concern to avoid a kind of ‘critical ghetto’, where educational research is reinterpreted in Bourdieusian terms, or metaphorised in his conceptual language, without realising the practical implications and consequences of viewing educational phenomena from such a perspective. Issues of research theory and practice are discussed, as well as the meaning of ‘being critical’. A series of case examples are offered where a Bourdieusian approach uncovered hidden generating structures in a range of educational settings: the education field of power; teacher education; language in education; and social capital policy. Rather than prioritise the political and emancipatory aspects of such critical analyses, the article, whilst acknowledging the necessity of these, draws attention to the practical, policy implications arising from the studies. The underlying argument is that ‘bad’ research, constructed without recognition of the full practical dynamic of educational phenomena, gives rise to ‘bad’ policy; in other words, partial and fragmented policy or policy with unexpected outcomes undermining its effectiveness. The article concludes that a Bourdieusian perspective consequently has direct relevance to educational leaders and managers and that ‘being critical’ has a real practical relevance. As such, this area of policy research has a central role to play within contemporary educational discourse.

Abstract:This article builds on the author's earlier work, published in Vol. 28 No. 1 of this journal, that critiqued the Orientalist legacy in Anglo-American discussions of Japanese education. One of the manifestations of this legacy is the prevailing view among the Anglo-American observers of Japanese education that Japanese education is the “exception” to the recent global restructuring movement. This article problematizes this view by exposing a similar but differently articulated structural change in Japanese education over the past three decades. Drawing on cultural studies and critical discourse analysis, the author focuses on the two policy keywords that the Ministry of Education has consistently used by for the past three decades: kosei (individuality) and yutori (low pressure). Tracing the complex histories of articulation and rearticulation of these policy keywords, the author demonstrates how the keywords, which had been associated with progressive political struggles against the Ministry's central control of public education, were mobilized to reconstitute people's common sense about education and thus to naturalize the radical systemic change towards the neo-liberal, post-welfare settlement. In conclusion, the author discusses the implication of the study to the field of comparative and international education, calling for a more critical, reflexive engagement with the field's preoccupation with “national differences”.

Abstract:The political and economic theory behind neoliberal ideology is one of the main architectural and philosophical features of the educational policy paradigm in the Western world since the late 1970s and early 1980s. The notion of 'policy enactments' means to consider some of the 'lived effects' of neoliberal policy on our contemporary educational discourses and on lived experiences and narratives that occur in education settings and that testify to these changes. Neoliberal ideology is permeated by neoliberal governmentality, where the hierarchy of management chains substitutes delegated power to become hierarchical forms of authoritatively structured human working relations. Neoliberal ideology is united by the strong belief that state intervention, which promotes egalitarian social goals, has been responsible for economic decline. Neoliberalism performs what can be perceived as accountability regimes. Professional accountability may be perceived to be a form of democratic accountability.

Abstract:This paper aims to interrogate Freirean critical pedagogy via the work of Jacques Lacan in order to shed new light on psychoanalytic issues that arise when engaging in critical pedagogical work. First, through a close reading of Freire's Pedagogy of the Oppressed, the author delineates Freire's conception of the human subject, the mechanisms that function to oppress subjects and prevent full humanization, and the process by which subjects can begin to imagine new possibilities outside of the oppressor/oppressed relationship. Next, careful consideration is given to Lacan's formulation of the function of the imaginary in the emergence of the subject, which was most clearly articulated in his seminal work The Mirror Stage as Formative of the Function of the I as Revealed in Psychoanalytic Experience. This engagement with these two thinkers emphasizes what Lacan can teach us about the complex relationship between identity construction, subjectivity, and the role of intersubjective relations in theorizing and creating a more just world.

Abstract:Education must go beyond the borders of the disciplines and educators must make individual learning development a top priority for education if they wish to fulfill their mission in theory and practice, and in order to promote the social development by cultivating and developing the different individual learning. While individual development is a public issue, not a personal affair, it is also a social issue. Thus, educational research bases itself on each type of development, as well as to its existence in the mosaic of social and cultural understanding of the situation. Consequently, theoretical concept and empirical study combine an intrinsic pedagogical paradigm mechanism.Furthermore as a theoretical approach to methodology, awareness of the value of education and method-related activities, pedagogy becomes a special way of seizing the world.

Abstract:Bourdieu’s version of field theory has had an impressive impact on the ways that sociologists of education conceptualize educational practices. These accounts tend to focus on the varying levels of ontological complicity established between students’ cultural dispositions and educational institutions. In this paper, the wisdom of these accounts is acknowledged but it is also suggested that Bourdieu’s field theory does not go far enough to detail the ways that positions in local educational fields embody pedagogic qualities and action trajectories. Drawing on insights from social psychology and relational sociology, a field theory for local educational action is outlined that more adequately accounts for the ways that students and educators directly experience and act upon curricular and pedagogic qualities in educational settings. An empirical example is then offered of the authors’ claims within the context of curricular tracking/streaming, and the article concludes by considering the practical and political consequences of this theoretical shift.

Abstract:Since the time when systematical researches on education law arose in the Mid-20 th century,the theoretical system and disciplinary construction of education law has kept winning concerns of scholars,whose discussions lacked consensus and fundamental reflections on relative jurisprudential problems.The theoretical system of education law should be grounded on four groups of elements:the right to education and the duty of state,the academic freedom and self-determination of school operation,the humanism and dignity of thought,and the double obligations with contractual duties.The framework of the system mainly consists of legal relations and activities of education,with special priorities,school governance and professional judgment as its features.This design could build education law as a discipline subordinate to both legal science and pedagogy and frame characteristic arrangement of curriculum,which will make it better develop as an independent subject and promote the rule of law in education.

Abstract:Educational institutions, whether privately owned or state funded, are a meeting place for students coming from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Educational institutions as learning environments and spaces not only play a fundamental role in the development of an individual, but also perpetuate various ideologies related to languages, politics, cultures, and society among others. In relation to language ideology, linguistic landscape is a novel field which allows sociolinguists to analyze how spaces are constituted through the language(s) employed in public signage as signs enable a dynamic process in which the language(s) used in these signs and those who pass by said signs influence each other to shape the landscape of their community. It enables the identification of the relative power and vitality of the language(s) in a particular community that may or may not appear in public signage. Language(s) displayed in public spaces can also be interpreted as a reflection of the ideological conflicts within a community. Respectively, there is a growing interest towards the study of the linguistic landscape in educational spaces, also known as schoolscape. School, a central civic institution, represents a deliberate and planned environment where learners are subjected to powerful messages about language(s) from local and national authorities. Accordingly, by reviewing past studies, this paper proposes to initiate discussion and investigation of the practices and the language(s) utilized in signs within educational spaces in the United States as institutions can perpetuate language ideologies, which can either foster or hinder bilingual education.
