Abstract:Laboratories in chemistry, biochemistry, and materials science are at the leading edge of technology, discovering molecules and materials to unlock capabilities in energy, catalysis, biotechnology, sustainability, electronics, and more. Yet, most modern laboratories resemble factories from generations past, with a large reliance on humans manually performing synthesis and characterization tasks. Robotics and automation can enable scientific experiments to be conducted faster, more safely, more accurately, and with greater reproducibility, allowing scientists to tackle large societal problems in domains such as health and energy on a shorter timescale. We define five levels of laboratory automation, from laboratory assistance to full automation. We also introduce robotics research challenges that arise when increasing levels of automation and when increasing the generality of tasks within the laboratory. Robots are poised to transform science labs into automated factories of discovery that accelerate scientific progress.

Abstract:To close the gap between the rates of computational screening and experimental realization of novel materials1,2, we introduce the A-Lab, an autonomous laboratory for the solid-state synthesis of inorganic powders. This platform uses computations, historical data from the literature, machine learning (ML) and active learning to plan and interpret the outcomes of experiments performed using robotics. Over 17 days of continuous operation, the A-Lab realized 41 novel compounds from a set of 58 targets including a variety of oxides and phosphates that were identified using large-scale ab initio phase-stability data from the Materials Project and Google DeepMind. Synthesis recipes were proposed by natural-language models trained on the literature and optimized using an active-learning approach grounded in thermodynamics. Analysis of the failed syntheses provides direct and actionable suggestions to improve current techniques for materials screening and synthesis design. The high success rate demonstrates the effectiveness of artificial-intelligence-driven platforms for autonomous materials discovery and motivates further integration of computations, historical knowledge and robotics.

Abstract:The successful integration of large language models (LLMs) into laboratory workflows has demonstrated robust capabilities in natural language processing, autonomous task execution, and collaborative problem-solving. This offers an exciting opportunity to realize the dream of autonomous chemical research on demand. Here, we report a robotic AI chemist powered by a hierarchical multi-agent system, ChemAgents, based on an on-board Llama-3-70B LLM, capable of executing complex, multi-step experiments with minimal human intervention. It operates through a Task Manager agent that interacts with human researchers and coordinates four role-specific agents—Literature Reader, Experiment Designer, Computation Performer, and Robot Operator—each leveraging one of four foundational resources: a comprehensive Literature Database, an extensive Protocol Library, a versatile Model Library, and a state-of-the-art Automated Lab. We demonstrate its versatility and efficacy through six experimental tasks of varying complexity, ranging from straightforward synthesis and characterization to more complex exploration and screening of experimental parameters, culminating in the discovery and optimization of functional materials. Our multi-agent-driven robotic AI chemist showcases the potential of on-demand autonomous chemical research to drive unprecedented efficiencies, accelerate discovery, and democratize access to advanced experimental capabilities across academic disciplines and industries.

Abstract:Recent advances in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence have provided an exciting opportunity to computerize the fundamental and applied studies of complex reaction systems via self-driving laboratories. Autonomous robotic experimentation can enable time-, material-, and resource-efficient exploration and/or optimization of high-dimensional space reaction systems. Furthermore, interpretation of the ML models trained on the experimental data can unveil the underlying reaction mechanisms. In this article, we discuss different elements of a self-driving lab, and present recent efforts in autonomous reaction modeling and optimization. Further development and adoption of ML-guided closed-loop experimentation strategies can realize the full potential of autonomous chemical science and engineering to accelerate the discovery and development of advanced materials and molecules.

Abstract:The ever-increasing demand for novel materials with superior properties inspires retrofitting traditional research paradigms in the era of artificial intelligence and automation. An autonomous experimental platform (AEP) has emerged as an exciting research frontier that achieves full autonomy via integrating data-driven algorithms such as machine learning (ML) with experimental automation in the material development loop from synthesis, characterization, and analysis, to decision making. In this review, we started with a primer to describe how to develop data-driven algorithms for solving material problems. Then, we systematically summarized recent progress on automated material synthesis, ML-enabled data analysis, and decision-making. Finally, we discussed challenges and opportunities in an endeavor to develop the next-generation AEPs for ultimately realizing an autonomous or self-driving laboratory. This review will provide insights for researchers aiming to learn the frontier of ML in materials and deploy AEPs in their labs for accelerating material development.

Abstract:Accelerating the discovery of new molecules and materials, as well as developing green and sustainable ways to synthesize them, will help to address global challenges in energy, sustainability and healthcare. The recent growth of data science and automated experimentation techniques has resulted in the advent of self-driving labs (SDLs) via the integration of machine learning, lab automation and robotics. An SDL is a machine-learning-assisted modular experimental platform that iteratively operates a series of experiments selected by the machine learning algorithm to achieve a user-defined objective. These intelligent robotic assistants help researchers to accelerate the pace of fundamental and applied research through rapid exploration of the chemical space. In this Review, we introduce SDLs and provide a roadmap for their implementation by non-expert scientists. We present the status quo of successful SDL implementations in the field and discuss their current limitations and future opportunities to accelerate finding solutions for societal needs.

Abstract:Over the past five years, artificial intelligence (AI) has grown significantly in different aspects of our daily lives, including health, transportation, and the digital world, all by leveraging data. Inspired by these success stories, materials researchers have started to adopt AI in experimental materials science to accelerate materials discovery and development by 10–100× through improving the efficiency of hypothesis generation, testing, and data analysis in a closed-loop fashion. This issue of MRS Bulletin presents a collection of papers discussing the recent advancements of AI in different aspects of experimental materials science and provides a framework for the next generation of autonomous experimentation strategies. In this article, we review the role of AI in experimental materials science and summarize the key aspects and challenges of autonomous experimentation discussed in each contributed article. We pose four questions at the interface of AI and experimental materials science, and present immediate calls for action for researchers working in this emerging field to move beyond optimization toward autonomous discovery. We hope this issue can accelerate convergence as well as flexibility and reconfiguration of hardware and software modules of autonomous robotic experimentation techniques to enable true digitalization of materials synthesis.

Abstract:Abstract New tools enable new ways of working, and materials science is no exception. In materials discovery, traditional manual, serial, and human-intensive work is being augmented by automated, parallel, and iterative processes driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI), simulation and experimental automation. In this perspective, we describe how these new capabilities enable the acceleration and enrichment of each stage of the discovery cycle. We show, using the example of the development of a novel chemically amplified photoresist, how these technologies’ impacts are amplified when they are used in concert with each other as powerful, heterogeneous workflows.

Abstract:What are researchers’ motivations and challenges related to automation and autonomy in materials science laboratories? Our survey on this topic received 102 responses from researchers across a variety of institutions and in a variety of roles. Accelerated discovery was a clear theme in the responses, and another theme was concern about the role of human researchers. Survey respondents shared a variety of use cases targeting accelerated materials discovery, including examples where partial automation is preferred over full self-driving laboratories. Building on the observed patterns of researcher priorities and needs, we propose a framework for levels of laboratory autonomy from non-automated (L0) to fully autonomous (L5).

Abstract:Autonomous experimentation driven by artificial intelligence (AI) provides an exciting opportunity to revolutionize inorganic materials discovery and development. Herein, we review recent progress in the design of self-driving laboratories, including robotics to automate materials synthesis and characterization, in conjunction with AI to interpret experimental outcomes and propose new experimental procedures. We focus on efforts to automate inorganic synthesis through solution-based routes, solid-state reactions, and thin film deposition. In each case, connections are made to relevant work in organic chemistry, where automation is more common. Characterization techniques are primarily discussed in the context of phase identification, as this task is critical to understand what products have formed during synthesis. The application of deep learning to analyze multivariate characterization data and perform phase identification is examined. To achieve "closed-loop" materials synthesis and design, we further provide a detailed overview of optimization algorithms that use active learning to rationally guide experimental iterations. Finally, we highlight several key opportunities and challenges for the future development of self-driving inorganic materials synthesis platforms.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) promises to reshape scientific inquiry and enable breakthrough discoveries in areas such as energy storage, quantum computing, and biomedicine. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), a cornerstone of the study of chemical and materials systems, stands to benefit greatly from AI-driven automation. However, present barriers to low-level instrument control, as well as generalizable and interpretable feature detection, make truly automated microscopy impractical. Here, we discuss the design of a closed-loop instrument control platform guided by emerging sparse data analytics. We hypothesize that a centralized controller, informed by machine learning combining limited a priori knowledge and task-based discrimination, could drive on-the-fly experimental decision-making. This platform may unlock practical, automated analysis of a variety of material features, enabling new high-throughput and statistical studies.

Abstract:Technologies such as batteries, biomaterials and heterogeneous catalysts have functions that are defined by mixtures of molecular and mesoscale components. As yet, this multi-length-scale complexity cannot be fully captured by atomistic simulations, and the design of such materials from first principles is still rare<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2442-2#ref-CR5">5</a>. Likewise, experimental complexity scales exponentially with the number of variables, restricting most searches to narrow areas of materials space. Robots can assist in experimental searches<a href="#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="#ref-CR7">7</a>,<a href="#ref-CR8">8</a>,<a href="#ref-CR9">9</a>,<a href="#ref-CR10">10</a>,<a href="#ref-CR11">11</a>,<a href="#ref-CR12">12</a>,<a href="#ref-CR13">13</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2442-2#ref-CR14">14</a> but their widespread adoption in materials research is challenging because of the diversity of sample types, operations, instruments and measurements required. Here we use a mobile robot to search for improved photocatalysts for hydrogen production from water<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2442-2#ref-CR15">15</a>. The robot operated autonomously over eight days, performing 688 experiments within a ten-variable experimental space, driven by a batched Bayesian search algorithm<a href="#ref-CR16">16</a>,<a href="#ref-CR17">17</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2442-2#ref-CR18">18</a>. This autonomous search identified photocatalyst mixtures that were six times more active than the initial formulations, selecting beneficial components and deselecting negative ones. Our strategy uses a dexterous<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2442-2#ref-CR19">19</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2442-2#ref-CR20">20</a> free-roaming robot<a href="#ref-CR21">21</a>,<a href="#ref-CR22">22</a>,<a href="#ref-CR23">23</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2442-2#ref-CR24">24</a>, automating the researcher rather than the instruments. This modular approach could be deployed in conventional laboratories for a range of research problems beyond photocatalysis.

Abstract:Self-driving laboratories can accelerate materials discovery by achieving scientific objectives hundreds of times faster than automation alone. However, a self-driving laboratory can take years to adapt to a new study. We contend that effective self-driving laboratories must (1) work faster than automation alone, and (2) be readily adapted to new studies. Here, we examine the characteristics of effective self-driving laboratories and highlight the challenges of reusing these laboratories for new studies. We then provide strategies for building effective self-driving laboratories that accelerate the discovery of new materials.
