Abstract:The minimum distance computation problem between two surfaces is very important in many applications such as robotics, CAD/CAM and computer graphics. Given two implicit algebraic surfaces, a new method based on the offset technique is presented to compute the minimum distance and a pair of points where the minimum distance occurs. The new method also works where there are an implicit algebraic surface and a parametric surface. Quadric surfaces, tori and canal surfaces are used to demonstrate our new method. When the two surfaces are a general quadric surface and a surface which is a cylinder, a cone or an elliptic paraboloid, the new method can produce two bivariate equations where the degrees are lower than those of any existing method.

Abstract:Computing minimum distance between two objects is very important in a lot of areas such as CAD/CAM computer graphics and collision detection. In 2002, computing minimum distance between two ellipsoid was reduced into the problem of solving two bivariate polynomial equations with degrees at most 12 by Lennerz and those of degrees 8 and 16 by Sohn et al. In this paper, it is converted into the problem of solving two triple polynomial equations with degrees no larger than 2 and 9. This result is obtained by using the offset surface and the Lagrange techniques. One of the two points where the minimum distance occurs is obtained by tracing the above two equations. The minimum distance is then a root of a quadratic equation, and the other point could be calculated by an explicit formula.

Abstract:The paper presents a new metheod for implicit algebraic surfaces intersection. From the view of visualization in science compute(VISC),the implicit algebraic surfaces act as the isosurface in three dimension scalar field. Then, the problem of solving for isosurface is transformed into the matters as following:look for the two surfaces' common voxel set;solve for the two algebraic surfaces' approximation - triangle facet in each voxel,and calculate their intersection line;combine all these line segments. The combination we got here is the intersection curve we want. This method is not only accurate, reliable, but also fit to various situations.

Abstract:Algebraic curves/surfaces are typical implicit curves/surfaces. They are used widely in CAD and computer graphics. For example, quadratic curve and quadric surface are used as primitive element in most modeling/CAD system. The implicit formulae for computing the intrinsic geometric invariant——Gaussian and mean curvature of an implicit surface are derived in the first part of this paper. The formulae for them are represented by determinant(s) over a simple term, the elements in which are all the derivatives of order one or two of the surface function. The intrinsic geometric invariant is used to study the geometric continuity between two implicit surfaces and the G 2 continuity conditions for two surfaces along their adjacent bound are derived in the second part of the paper. A G 2 blending surface between two given algebraic surfaces are constructed with Gaussian and mean curvature continuity in the last part of the paper, the blending surface itself is also algebraic surface with minimum order.

Abstract:The computation of the minimum distance between a point and a surface is important for the applications such as CAD/CAM, NC verification, robotics and computer graphics. This paper presents a spherical clipping method to compute the minimum distance between a point and a clamped B-spline surface. The surface patches outside the clipping sphere which do not contain the nearest point are eliminated. Another exclusion criterion whether the nearest point is on the boundary curves of the surface is employed, which is proved to be superior to previous comparable criteria. Examples are also shown to illustrate efficiency and correctness of the new method.

Abstract:It is an important step to calculate the minimum distance between a space point and a surface in CAD/CAM system. Its accuracy and efficiency influence the reliability and practicability of the system. Generally, the minimum distance may be calculated by an enumerating method or an optimizing method. But for a free form surface, the data amount is large, and the calculating procedure of the two methods is very complex. Therefore it can't meet the needs of high precision and high efficiency. In this paper, a quick and practical algorithm for calculating the minimum distance between a space point and a surface is put forward, and it is proved to be robust and reliable. The algorithm contains three steps. The first step is to plot out the mesh of surface, and calculate the distance between the space point and the net node of surface mesh. Second step is to choose the minimum value as the initial point of iterative procedure in the surface. Finally iterative computations are carried out. Therefore the computing speed of this algorithm is high, and the calculating precision is tractable. The effectiveness of algorithm is verified by some examples.

Abstract:In this paper we formulate the generalized median surface problem and present its exact solution by means of an optimal 3D graph search algorithm. In addition to the general interest in median surface computation our work is also motivated by the task of parameter space exploration without ground truth, which is an effective means of dealing with the difficult parameter problem. A concrete application in this context will be demonstrated on artery boundary detection in ultrasound data. It will be shown that the median computation can not only avoid the parameter training, but also potentially achieve even better results than with trained parameters. Particularly in situations with no available ground truth, the median-based approach can thus be a good alternate. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract:A sweeping sphere clipping method is presented for computing the minimum distance between two Bézier curves. The sweeping sphere is constructed by rolling a sphere with its center point along a curve. The initial radius of the sweeping sphere can be set as the minimum distance between an end point and the other curve. The nearest point on a curve must be contained in the sweeping sphere along the other curve, and all of the parts outside the sweeping sphere can be eliminated. A simple sufficient condition when the nearest point is one of the two end points of a curve is provided, which turns the curve/curve case into a point/curve case and leads to higher efficiency. Examples are shown to illustrate efficiency and robustness of the new method.

Abstract:Parametric and implicit forms are two common representations of geometric objects. It is important to be able to pass back and forth between the two representations, two processes called parameterization and implicitization, respectively. In this paper, we study the parametrization and implicitization of quadrics (quadratic parametric surfaces with two base points) and cubic surfaces (cubic parametric surfaces with six base points) with the help of mu-bases - a newly developed tool which connects the parametric form and the implicit form of a surface. For both cases, we show that the minimal mu-bases are all linear in the parametric variables, and based on this observation, very efficient algorithms are devised to compute the minimal mu-bases either from the parametric equation or the implicit equation. The conversion between the parametric equation and the implicit equation can be easily accomplished from the minimal mu-bases.
Shortest Total Distance Traveled Among Curves , Surfaces and Lagrange Multipliers

Abstract:This paper was inspired by students at Guangzhou University in 2014, the problems are variations from those described in [1]. We seek the shortest total distance from curve 1 to curve 2, curve 2 to curve 3 and curve 3 back to curve 1. In 3D, we want to nd the shortest total distance between surface 1 and surface 2, surface 2 and surface 3, surface 3 and surface 4, and nally surface 4 and surface 1. We assume curves and surfaces are not intersecting. We start with the simplest case for circles in 2D and we link to higher dimensions through the Lagrange multipliers method. 1 Introduction In [1], we considered three given disjoint curves, C1; C2 and C3 respectively in the plane, and we found the minimum total (squared) distance from C1 to C2 and C1 to C3:We also worked on four non-intersecting convex surfaces S1; S2; S3 and S4 in R and we found the the minimum total (squared) distance from S1 to S2; S1 to S3; and S1 to S4: In this paper, we discuss the following problems which were raised during the rst authors research visit at Guangzhou University during February and April of 2014. Given three disjoint curves, C1; C2 and C3 respectively in R; we need to nd the minimum total distance from C1 to C2; C2 to C3 and C3 to C1: Next, we consider four disjoint convex surfaces S1; S2; S3 and S4 and we shall nd the minimum total distance from S1 to S2; S2 to S3; S3 to S4 and S4 to S1: We note that the total squared distance is obviously di¤erent from the exact total distance. However, in this paper, we do not distinguish the di¤erences between these two when we are proving theorems. We will only use true total distance, kx yk ; for x and y in R or R in actual computations with Maple. The method of nding the extremum of the total (squared) distance is an application of the Lagrange Multipliers Method, which we summarize in Corollary. Theorem 6 is a generalization of Corollary. Distance function based algorithm for spatial straightness evaluation

Abstract:This paper focuses on the development of an efficient algorithm for evaluating the spatial straightness error based on the minimum circumscribed cylinder (MCC). A signed point-surface distance function is defined, and its increment with respect to the differential motion of the surface is derived. On this basis, spatial straightness evaluation is formulated as a non-linear constrained optimization problem, and a sequential approximation algorithm, with the magnitude of the differential motion of the reference axis being well controlled at each iteration, is developed to solve it. Also, a simple approach for verification of the optimality of the solution is presented. Compared with existing algorithms, it has the advantages of implementational simplicity, computational efficiency and robustness. Examples confirm the validity of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:How to obtain intersection of curves and surfaces is a fundamental problem in many areas such as computer graphics, CAD/CAM, computer animation, and robotics. Especially, how to deal with singular cases, such as tangency or superposition, is a key problem in obtaining intersection results. A method for solving the intersection problem based on the coordinate transformation is presented. With the Lagrange multiplier method, the minimum distance between the center of a circle and a quadric surface is given as well. Experience shows that the coordinate transformation could significantly simplify the method for calculating intersection results. The location of the tangent point is revised according to the tangency condition. It can improve the stability of the intersection of given curves and surfaces in singularity cases. The new algorithm is applied in a three dimensional CAD software (GEMS), produced by Tsinghua University.

Abstract:A new algorithm for 3D mesh simplification based on minimum surface area error was presented in this paper. The algorithm simpliifes 3D models by minimizing an error objective function. Firstly, the algorithm used the edge traversal algorithm for calculating the minimum area of each edge. Then the vertex coordinates of those new points were determined by ifnding the minimum surface area error. The results of our experiment show that our algorithm can not only relfect the local surface geometry changes, but also keep the model in a relatively high ifdelity. Experimental results for the effectiveness of the algorithm were also presented.

Abstract:The minimal distance computing between two tori is the basis of their collision detection and intersection. A method is proposed for discriminating three types of position relationship (i.e., inclusion, disjunction and intersection) between two tori, and for computing their minimal distance. This paper proves that the Hausdorff distance between two circles in three-dimensional space can be obtained by computing their collinear normal points, which can be calculated by solving an equation of degree 8. With classification and comparison of the collinear normal points, the minimum distance and the Hausdorff distance between these two circles are obtained. In addition, this paper proves that the position relationship between two tori relates to not only the minimum distance but also the directed Hausdorff distance between their central circles. And then the minimum distance between two tori is calculated. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the stability and efficiency of the method.

Abstract:This paper presents an algorithm to compute the minimum distance from a point to a convex cone in n-dimensional space. The convex cone is represented as the set of all nonnegative combinations of a given set. The algorithm generates a sequence of simplicial cones in the convex cone, such that their distances to the single point converge to the desired distance. In many cases, the generated sequence is finite, and therefore, the algorithm has finite-convergence property. Recursive formulas are derived to speed up the computation of distances between the single point and the simplicial cones. The superior efficiency and effectiveness of this algorithm are demonstrated by applications to force-closure test, system equilibrium test, and contact force distribution, which are fundamental problems in the research of multicontact robotic systems. Theoretical and numerical comparisons with previous work are provided.
