Abstract:A new method is presented for computing the minimum distance between a point and a NURBS curve. It utilizes a circular clipping technique to eliminate the curve parts outside a circle with the test point as its center point. The radius of the elimination circle becomes smaller and smaller during the subdivision process. A simple condition for terminating the subdivision process is provided, which leads to very few subdivision steps in the new method. Examples are shown to illustrate the efficiency and robustness of the new method.

Abstract:A sweeping sphere clipping method is presented for computing the minimum distance between two Bézier curves. The sweeping sphere is constructed by rolling a sphere with its center point along a curve. The initial radius of the sweeping sphere can be set as the minimum distance between an end point and the other curve. The nearest point on a curve must be contained in the sweeping sphere along the other curve, and all of the parts outside the sweeping sphere can be eliminated. A simple sufficient condition when the nearest point is one of the two end points of a curve is provided, which turns the curve/curve case into a point/curve case and leads to higher efficiency. Examples are shown to illustrate efficiency and robustness of the new method.

Abstract:The computation of the minimum distance between a point and a surface is important for the applications such as CAD/CAM, NC verification, robotics and computer graphics. This paper presents a spherical clipping method to compute the minimum distance between a point and a clamped B-spline surface. The surface patches outside the clipping sphere which do not contain the nearest point are eliminated. Another exclusion criterion whether the nearest point is on the boundary curves of the surface is employed, which is proved to be superior to previous comparable criteria. Examples are also shown to illustrate efficiency and correctness of the new method.

Abstract:It is desirable to approximate a smooth curve by arc spline with fewest segments within prescribed tolerance. In this paper, we present an efficient algorithm for fitting planar smooth curve by arc spline. The main idea is that we construct the optimal arc spline by optimizing the interpolating biarc curve. The scheme consists of three steps: (1) sampling the curve based on consecutive tangents deviation; (2) construct the interpolating arc spline; (3) reduce the arc number to the minimum within prescribed tolerance. The algorithm can control the approximating error efficiently and results in the fewest number of arc segments.

Abstract:We fair and fit planar point sets by minimal-energy arc splines. The fairing process consists of two steps: computing the optimal tangents for curve interpolation and adjusting the point positions by smoothing the discrete curvatures. To fit the point set with minimal-energy arc curve, a simple linear algorithm is given for computing the optimal tangents. The discrete curvatures derived from the optimal tangents can be made smooth by low-pass filtering. These two linear and local algorithms are combined to generate a fair point set together with a fair G1 arc curve within a given tolerance of the original data. The method can be used for fair shape design and measured data processing. Numerical examples are given to show the efficiency of this method.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the geodesic-like algorithm for the computation of the shortest path between two objects on NURBS surfaces and periodic surfaces. This method can improve the distance problem not only on surfaces but in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Moreover, the geodesic-like algorithm also provides an efficient approach to simulate the minimal geodesic between two holes on a NURBS surfaces.

Abstract:The curvature of the NURBS curve varies along its trajectory, therefore, the commonly used feedrate-planning method, which based on the acceleration/deceleration (Acc/Dec) model, is difficult to be directly applied in CNC machining of a NURBS curve. To address this problem, a feedrate-planning method based on the critical constraint curve of the feedrate (CCC) is proposed. Firstly, the problems of existing feedrate-planning methods and their causes are analyzed. Secondly, by considering both the curvature constraint and the kinematic constraint during the Acc/Dec process, the concept of CCC which represents the relationship between the critical feedrate-constraint value and the arc length is proposed. Then the CCC of a NURBS curve is constructed, and it has a concise expression conforming to the Acc/Dec model. Finally, a feedrate-planning method of a NURBS curve based on CCC and the Acc/Dec model is established. In the simulation, a comparison between the proposed method and the conventional feedrate-planning method is performed, and the results show that, the proposed method can reduce the Acc/Dec time by over 40%, while little computational burden being added. The machining experimental results validate the real-time performance and stability of the proposed method, and also the machining quality is verified. The proposed method offers an effective feedrate-planning strategy for a NURBS curve in CNC machining.

Abstract:Taking advantage of orthogonality, locality and oscillation of non-uniform B-spline wavelets, a new fairing algorithm for rational B-spline curve was studied. Various knots selection methods were used to decompose the non-uniform rational B-spline(NURBS) curve.The global and local fairing for the NURBS curve were implemented through approximation. The problem of position and tangent preserving at end points were dealt with by adding constraints. The applications in RE-SOFT,a reverse engineering software developed by Zhejiang University, showed that the fairing algorithm based on non-uniform B-spline wavelets decomposition can efficiently remove the bad points and improve the quality of the curve.

Abstract:The minimum distance computation problem between two surfaces is very important in many applications such as robotics, CAD/CAM and computer graphics. Given two implicit algebraic surfaces, a new method based on the offset technique is presented to compute the minimum distance and a pair of points where the minimum distance occurs. The new method also works where there are an implicit algebraic surface and a parametric surface. Quadric surfaces, tori and canal surfaces are used to demonstrate our new method. When the two surfaces are a general quadric surface and a surface which is a cylinder, a cone or an elliptic paraboloid, the new method can produce two bivariate equations where the degrees are lower than those of any existing method.

Abstract:As for curvature continuity curves, they are usually constructed by means of rational cubic curves. A method for interpolating global curvature continuity curves with conic segments is presented. Firstly, the curvature continuity conditions between two adjacent rational quadratic curve segments are derived. Secondly, an optimal algorithm is presented for solving out the tangent lines at every points of a closed point set in a plane. Finally, several examples are given out to illustrate the effectiveness of this method.

Abstract:The minimal distance computing between two tori is the basis of their collision detection and intersection. A method is proposed for discriminating three types of position relationship (i.e., inclusion, disjunction and intersection) between two tori, and for computing their minimal distance. This paper proves that the Hausdorff distance between two circles in three-dimensional space can be obtained by computing their collinear normal points, which can be calculated by solving an equation of degree 8. With classification and comparison of the collinear normal points, the minimum distance and the Hausdorff distance between these two circles are obtained. In addition, this paper proves that the position relationship between two tori relates to not only the minimum distance but also the directed Hausdorff distance between their central circles. And then the minimum distance between two tori is calculated. Numerical results are presented to illustrate the stability and efficiency of the method.

Abstract:Accuracy degree of mapping relation between curve parameter and feedrate affecting interpolation precision is neglected with conventional planning feedrate method generally.Aiming at this problem,a method of splitting the NURBS curve following its curvature monotonicity and thereby planning feedrate algorithm is proposed.First set the critical value of curvature;second analyze the curvature monotonicity of NURBS curve,and then split the NURBS curve into several sub-segments according its critical value of curvature,critical and transition points of curvature,and calculate arc length of each sub-segments;at last,considering the constrains owing to dynamical properties of machine tools,optimize suitable feedrate from critical points of curvature bilaterally to critical value and turning points of curvature with S acc/dec.Comparison results between the conventional and proposed planning algorithm indicates that the interpolation precision can be remarkably enhanced along with little prolonging machining time utilizing the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:This paper proposes an algorithm for estimation of point projection parameters, based on pruning on the explicit convex hull of the squared distance function. The explicit expression of the squared distance function is deduced. According to the special requirement of point projection, the convex hull of the squared distance function is incrementally constructed. In each step, regions that obviously contain no projection points are eliminated from the base curve or surface, by intersecting the current nearest distance line with the convex hull. When the user-defined tolerances are satisfied, iteration algorithms are used to get the precise projection points. Experimental results show that compared with existing algorithms using clipping circle/sphere or line/plane, this algorithm possesses higher elimination rate and computation speed.

Abstract:An algorithm for reducing control points in NURBS surface skinning is proposed in this paper. We first give a, distance estimation between the input curves and the surface that has been removed a knot. Then we further reduce the control points in NURBS surface skinning within. the given tolerance by utilizing the "residual distance". Furthermore, the algorithm is applied to simplify a NURBS surface by giving a distance estimation between the original surface and the knot-removal surface. Experimental results demonstrate the usability and quality of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:A novel method to improve the efficiency of error compensation in free-form surface machining based on the Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) surface control points reconstruction is proposed in this article. With the presented method, a relatively small number of inspection points are needed to be measured for error compensation. The machined surface is obtained by reconstructing the control points of the designed surface based on the on-machine measurement data. The machining error of the surface is obtained by calculating the difference between the machined surface and the designed one. Then a compensate surface is achieved using the mirror symmetry model and surface modification method to compensate the machining error. Experimental validation for the milling of a NURBS surface shows that the machining accuracy of the surface is improved by 62.57% through use of the proposed method.

Abstract:Computing minimum distance between two objects is very important in a lot of areas such as CAD/CAM computer graphics and collision detection. In 2002, computing minimum distance between two ellipsoid was reduced into the problem of solving two bivariate polynomial equations with degrees at most 12 by Lennerz and those of degrees 8 and 16 by Sohn et al. In this paper, it is converted into the problem of solving two triple polynomial equations with degrees no larger than 2 and 9. This result is obtained by using the offset surface and the Lagrange techniques. One of the two points where the minimum distance occurs is obtained by tracing the above two equations. The minimum distance is then a root of a quadratic equation, and the other point could be calculated by an explicit formula.

Abstract:Interpolating non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) curves often leads to undesirable feedrate fluctuations due to the non-analytic relationship between the spline parameter and arc length. In this paper, we introduce a feedback method that effectively reduces feedrate fluctuations while maintaining simplicity in the interpolation process. Our approach begins by defining the chord length-parameter ratio (CPR), which we then predict for the current interpolation point using Newton's divided difference interpolation polynomial and historical CPR data. Subsequently, we calculate the compensation length based on tangent and chord directions, and we correct the initial parameter using the second-order Runge-Kutta method. Importantly, our method involves only two calculations of the first derivative of the NURBS curve, making it computationally efficient compared to most approximation methods. To validate our proposed method, we conduct numerical simulations and compare its performance against several approximation methods and a recent feedback method. The results demonstrate that our approach excels in terms of both efficiency and accuracy, making it a promising solution for improving NURBS curve interpolation.

Abstract:Set of methods based on non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) are proposed in this article, which are adopted to improve the smoothness during short linear numerical control (NC) codes machining. The smoothness refers to two aspects: the contour fairness of CL trajectory and the machining stability of the machine tool. To obtain contour fairness, the optimised knots combination strategy (OKCS) is proposed in least square NURBS fitting from short linear segments, which generates NURBS curve for the next interpolating process. Sequentially, an axis-based look-ahead NURBS interpolator (ALANI) is designed for NURBS interpolation in order to improve the machining stability according to the kinematic limit. Both OKCS and ALANI are simulated and compared with congener algorithms, respectively. Furthermore, algorithms are implemented on digital signal processor (DSP) platform, and actual machining examples are presented at last.
