Abstract:Polyethylene-based magnetic composites have been prepared by ethylene polymerization on the surface of NdFeB magnets, which is previously activated by ball milling with catalyst components. The level of magnets has been controlled by catalyst preparation and polymerization parameters such as Al/Ti ratio and polymerization temperature. The coertivity and the residual magnetizability were investigated. It was found that the magnetic properties of magnet powders are largely retained. In addition, in contrast to composites prepared by melt mixing, the adhesion force between magnets and polymer matrix is improved significantly and better mechanical properties are expected. Abstract:We report the use of nanoparticles to stabilise free radical dispersion polymerisations, without the need for any conventional stabiliser, leading to the preparation of polystyrene nanocomposites. The products are well characterised spherical polymer microparticles decorated with nanoparticles on their surfaces. In this paper we demonstrate the process with Fe3O4nanoparticles yielding a product with a strong magnetic property. By using this in situpolymerisation technique, not only can nanoparticles in aqueous solution be harvested, but also this provides a completely new route to polymer composites. Thus, functional nanoparticles can be immobilised onto the surface of the polymer beads to modify significantly their properties.

Abstract:A novel strategy based on nanoparticle-stabilised suspension-polymerisation has been achieved for the preparation of hybrid nanocomposites in the absence of any conventional stabiliser. By using this in situ polymerisation technique, functional nanoparticles can be immobilised onto the surface of polymer beads to significantly modify their properties. In this paper, Fe3O4 nanoparticles are used as stabiliser for the suspension polymerisation of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in water. Magnetic Fe3O4–PMMA nanocomposite polymer particles have been successfully synthesised. The experimental results show that the Fe3O4 nanoparticles are uniformly distributed on the surface of the spherical polymer beads.

Abstract:Magnetic hybrid nanoparticles have superparamagnetism from magnetite and special properties from polymer parts, such as biocompatibility, stimuli-responsivity, fluorescence, and the dispersion of hybrid nanoparticles, are obviously improved compared to that of magnetite. The research of magnetic hybrid nanoparticles have been intensively pursued because of their potential application in biomedicine, catalysis, separation and other fields. In this paper, the research progress of the preparation of magnetic hybrid nanoparticles via surface-initiated polymerization is reviewed from polymerization mechanism, including traditional radical polymerization, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT), nitroxide-mediated radical polymerization (NMRP), and ring-opening polymerization (ROP).

Abstract:Magnetic polymer composites have been widely utilized in potential applications in material science, such as reduction of dyes, immunodiagnostics, biomedicals, and magnetically controllable photonic crystals owing to large surface areas, fast separation, and recyclable performance. In this work, anisotropic magnetic particles were prepared by seeded emulsion polymerization, with morphologies of "Fe3O4-shell", "hemisphere-like", "raspberry-like", "multiple lobes-like", and "sandwich-like". Poly(styrene/divinylbenzene/mono-2-(methacryloxy)ethyl succinate)@ Fe3O4 (P(St/DVB/MMES)@Fe3O4) were the seed microspheres, and P(St/DVB/MMES)@Fe3O4@polymer particles are achieved by seeded emulsion polymerizations. The morphology of the particles depends on polymerization conditions (monomer ratios and surfactant), particle properties, and so on. Then, the minimum surface free energy change principles were used to predict the equilibrium morphologies of the magnetic polymer composites. Through theory, the model gives the correct tendency and good agreement with the equilibrium morphology which was in tandem with TEM results. Lastly, after in situ surface deposition of Ag nanoparticles, magnetic composite particles with sandwich-like morphology were applied for the catalytic degradation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reacting with NaBH4. The apparent rate coefficient is 0.0069 s-1, and it can keep mainly about 80% efficiency in catalysis after five cycles.

Abstract:Pickering suspension polymerization was used to prepare magnetic polymer microspheres that have polymer cores enveloped by shells of magnetic nanoparticles. Styrene was emulsified in an aqueous dispersion of Fe3O4 nanoparticles using a high shear. The resultant Pickering oil-in-water (o/w) emulsion stabilized solely by magnetic nanoparticles was easily polymerized at 70°C without stirring. Fe3O4 nanoparticles act as effective stabilizers during polymerization and as building blocks for creating the organic–inorganic hybrid nanocomposite after polymerization. The fabricated magnetic nanocomposites were characterized by FTIR, XRD, TGA, DSC, GPC, XPS and SEM. The structures of the polymer core and the nanoparticle shell were analyzed. We investigated the effects on the products of the weight of Fe3O4 nanoparticles used to stabilize the original Pickering emulsions. Pickering suspension polymerization provides a new route for the synthesis of a variety of hybrid nanocomposite microspheres with supracolloidal structures.

Abstract:To control the interfacial interaction in magnetic metal nanoparticles-filled polymer composites, surfaces of iron, cobalt, and nickel nanoparticles were grafted by irradiation-induced polymerization. On the basis of the study of dynamical mechanical behavior, thermal stability, and magnetic performance of the composites prepared by either solution mixing or in situ polymerization, the structure-property relationships of the composites are a function of interfacial interaction and the dispersion state of the nanoparticles. In addition, grafting of polymers onto the surface of the metal nanoparticles changed the surface magnetic state, leading to the possibility of purposely tailoring the magnetic behavior of the composites. A Highly Efficient Route for Preparing Porous Magnetic Nanospheres with Surface-Adsorbed Quantum Dots

Abstract:Nanoparticles that synchronously exhibit fluorescence and magnetism have great potential in biomedical applications. In this study, porous magnetic nanospheres ranging mainly from 300 to 800nm in diameter were prepared by spray-drying an ethanol solution containing an ethyl cellulose (EC) polymer and Fe3O4 nanoparticles, carried out at lower temperatures (e.g. 40 degrees C). The pores in the nanospheres were mainly caused by the addition of the Fe3O4 nanoparticles in the EC precursor. It was found that the more Fe3O4 nanoparticles added into the EC precursor, the greater the number and size of the pores in the nanospheres. Positively charged quantum dots (QDs) could be easily adsorbed onto the surface of these porous magnetic nanospheres through a simple electrostatic interaction. It was also found that the greater the porosity of the nanospheres, the more QDs could be adsorbed. The QD-coated magnetic nanospheres obtained are expected to have good multifunctionality due to the synchronous exhibition of bright fluorescence and superparamagnetism. This is a novel, simple and highly efficient method for preparing magneto-fluorescent nanospheres, which are expected to be of considerable interest to material scientists and biologists.

Abstract:The hard magnetic particle/polymer composites possess excellent properties coming from both the magnetic dispersed phase and the polymer matrix, such as the magnetic property, the performance of easy processing, and even conductive property. Various specific physical and chemical properties of the polymer matrix were compared, and the methods to prepare composites with both permanent magnetic powder and polymer matrix, as well as the application of the composites in different fields were reviewed. On this basis, the potential applications and the development directions of the resultant permanent magnetic polymer composites are also discussed.

Abstract:Magnetic Fe3O4/poly(styrene-co-acrylamide) core/shell nanospheres were prepared by one-step miniemulsion polymerization in the presence of Fe3O4 ferrofluids. The functional monomer of acrylamide was used not only to modify the surface of the nanospheres with functional groups, but also to form modified bilayer with SDBS to control the encapsulation and particle size of nanospheres. The properties of magnetic nanospheres were characterized by IR, TEM, TG and VSM. The results indicated that the superparamagnetic nanopsheres had small particle size of 60nm, high saturation magnetization of 27.1emu/g, high magnetic content and abundant functional groups. The possible formation mechanism of magnetic nanospheres was discussed in detail.

Abstract:We describe a simple method to prepare magnetic responsive polydivinylbenzene (PDVB) nanofiber composites by precipitated cationic living polymerization in the present of oleic acid capped Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs). The Fe3O4 NPs are encapsulated with the PDVB forming dendrites, from which thin nanofibers are grown in the tip-growth mode. The thin nanofibers are interwoven with the thick nanofibers forming robust composite network. The composites are magnetic responsive and highly efficient to gel almost all chemicals. Separation of the gelled chemicals from water becomes easier with a magnet. The performance is promising for magnetic collection of chemical spills.

Abstract:Magnetic nanocomposites prepared using a polyacrylamide gel method have been widely investigated recently for applications including high-temperature superconductors and solid oxide fuel cells. The polyacrylamide gel method is an effective way to prepare diverse microstructures such as nanoparticles, nanorods and porous monolithic structures, etc. using organic monomers including acrylamide and bis-acrylamide etc. and the appropriate chelating agents. This paper reviews recent development of the polyacrylamide gel technology for synthesis of magnetic nanocomposites, focusing on the following nanostructures: (1) 0D nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed in a hollow spheres matrix; (2) core/shell structure; (3) 2D nanosheets dispersed in a bulk matrix; and (4) 0D nanoparticles (NPs) dispersed in a porous matrix. By appropriately selecting chelating agents/initiators and controlling the unique physicochemical properties of the magnetic nanocomposites, various types of nanocomposites based on nanoparticle, nanorods, nanowires and nanowhiskers can be assembled and synthesized, which are promising for new intriguing applications such as magneto-optic and magneto-electronic applications.

Abstract:To optimize cost and weight and streamline the manufacturing process of existing soft magnetic components, which currently rely on metallic soft magnetic particles, an innovative approach involving the preparation of high-performance magnetic polymeric composites is proposed. These composites are based on soft magnetic ferrite particles with high Curie temperature and magnetic saturation, along with low coercivity and remanent magnetization, and are used as fillers in thermoplastic polymers. To achieve these goals, cobalt ferrite (CoFe 2 O 4 ) micro- and nanoparticles were synthesized by two different methos: solid-state reaction and coprecipitation. The as-obtained particles were used to fabricate soft magnetic polymer composites by extrusion and injection molding methods. The successful synthesis of cobalt ferrite was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopy. The magnetic behavior of cobalt ferrites and polymer composites was also investigated by vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM). This study shows that these new high-performance soft magnetic polymer composites can be used as alternative materials for the manufacture of magnetic components such as inductors and transformers and that their low cost and lightweight make them suitable for the manufacture of magnetic components.

Abstract:Magnetic poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) microspheres were prepared by water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) miniemulsion polymerization of monomers in the presence of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The copolymerizable monomers of acrylic acid and acrylamide were used not only to modify the surfaces of the microspheres with functional groups, but also to act as viscosity regulators to control the morphology and size of these microspheres. It was experimentally observed that the surfaces of these microspheres were functionalized with NH2 groups produced by copolymerization, the morphologies (sphere, ringlike, and one-hole) of the microspheres were controlled by the concentration of copolymerizable monomers, and all samples prepared were superparamagnetic. The possible mechanism of formation of these magnetic microspheres is also discussed.

Abstract:We present an approach of synthesizing magnetic polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) microspheres by a simple method of dispersion polymerization. Water-based Magnetic fluids which have different surface properties disperse in reaction system. The magnetic microspheres are appropriate to construct liquid chip carriers. In this work, citric acid-modified and citric acid sodium-modified magnetic nanoparticles for the preparation of magnetic microspheres are investigated. SEM results indicated that the magnetic microspheres have an average diameter of 3.78 μm with excellent monodispersity (PDI 1.09). Magnetization curve of Fe3O4 nanoparticles using superconducting quantum magnetometer showed their good performance in magnetic response characteristics. Chemical structures and crystal form of magnetic Fe3O4 were characterized and analyzed using FT-IR and XRD methods.

Abstract:Core-shell structural Fe3O4@SiO2particles were prepared with the method of sol-gel. The prepared composite particles were characterized by TEM, XRD, FT-IR, respectively. Then, The amino(-NH2) groups and CH=CH2were covalently bonded to Fe3O4@SiO2particles. The synthesized magnetic particles were characterized using FT-IR, XPS. The last,(Fe3O4@SiO2)@MIPs were prepared by the method of surface-imprinting. The particles morphology was observed with the TEM and the magnetization curve of the particles was also obtained with the VSM. Results indicated their decentralization was favorable.

Abstract:Magnetic polymer composite microspheres with high magnetite contents were prepared by dispersion polymerization of styrene (St) and glucidylmethacrylate (GMA), in which Fe3O4 nanoparticles were co-stabilized by oleic acid and silane surfactants. The microstructure of the composite microspheres was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results demonstrated the presence of a hybrid morphology with organic polymer-encapsulated inorganic particles. Subsequently, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) were used to evaluate the magnetite content of the microspheres. It was found that an accordant magnetite content of about 70wt%, could be obtained for the magnetic polymer microspheres, a value significantly higher than those reported thus far. The possible mechanism for the formation of the microspheres was proposed.

Abstract:In order to overcome the low conversion and complex post-treatment, four different polymerization procedures were adopted to prepare the magnetic polymer latexes. The results clearly show that the strategy using magnetic emulsion template-dosage is the most effective and feasible. Based on the optimized procedure, various factors including the type of initiators such as oil soluble initiator, water soluble initiator, redox initiator system, crosslinking agent, functional monomers etc. were systematically studied. Magnetic polymer latex with high monomer conversion of 83% and high magnet content of 31.8% was successfully obtained. Besides, core–shell structured magnetic polymer latex with good film forming property was also prepared, which is promising for potential applications such as magnetic coatings and modification of cementitious materials with controlled polymer location.
