Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) has been considered as one of the most promising anodes for advanced rechargeable batteries due to its advantages such as high energy density, earth abundance and environmental friendly. However, its large volume change during the Li-Sn/Na-Sn alloying and de-alloying processes will result in a fast capacity degradation over a long term cycling. To solve this issue, in this work we design and synthesize a novel honeycomb-like composite composing of carbon encapsulated SnO2 nanospheres embedded in carbon film by using dual templates of SiO2 and NaCl. Using these composites as anodes both in lithium ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries, no discernable capacity degradation is observed over hundreds of long term cycles at both low current density (100 mA g(-1)) and high current density (500 mA g(-1)). Such a good cyclic stability and high delivered capacity have been attributed to the high conductivity of the supported carbon film and hollow encapsulated carbon shells, which not only provide enough space to accommodate the volume expansion but also prevent further aggregation of SnO2 nanoparticles upon cycling. By engineering electrodes of accommodating high volume expansion, we demonstrate a prototype to achieve high performance batteries, especially high-power batteries. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Owing to the rich abundance and low-cost of K resources, potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have been a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The exploration of suitable anode materials is challenging but of great importance for KIBs development. Alloying anodes such as Sn, Sb and their oxides have been proved as promising anode materials for KIBs due to their high specific capacities. Here, Sn nanoparticles uniformly anchored on N doped porous carbon (Sn/NPC) are prepared using simple sol-gel method and heat treatment. As support skeleton, NPC endows Sn/NPC good conductivity and prevent agglomeration of Sn nanoparticles, which can be beneficial for high capability and rate performance. When evaluated as anode of KIBs, enhanced capacity of 198 mAh g(-1) is achieved at a current density of 50 mA g(-1) after 200 cycles. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:SnO2 has high capacity but poor cycling stability for Li-ion batteries due to pulverization and aggregation. Herein, we tackle these two challenges by uniformly dispersing carbon coated nanoSnO(2) into a micro-sized porous carbon matrix to form a nano-SnO2/C composite anode using a facile and scalable in situ synthesis strategy. The SnO2@C nanocomposite exhibits a capacity of 640 mA h g(-1) at 500 mA g(-1) in the initial 150 cycles and then increases to 720 mA h g(-1) and maintains this capacity for 420 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance with long cycle lifetimes of the carbon foam-SnO2 nanocomposites could be attributed to their unique carbon microstructures: the network of carbon sheets provides favorable electron transport, while the interconnected micro-/mesopores can serve as the effective channels of lithium ion transport, thereby supplying short lithium ion diffusion pathways. Meanwhile, these pores surrounding the active species of nanoSnO(2) along with flexible carbon nanosheets can accommodate the severe volume variations during prolonged electrochemical cycling and mitigate the Sn aggregation. The present study provides a large-scale synthesis route to synthesize SnO2-based anode materials with superior electrochemical performance for lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Tin (Sn) has been considered as a promising anode material for sodium ion battery due to its high specific capacity. However, its poor cycling stability and rate performance hinders the real application. Inspired by the structure of reinforced concrete and tunnel, an integrated SnOx/carbon composite anode was designed for high performance sodium ion batteries. In this structure, the SnOx nanoparticles were embedded in the amorphous carbon with interconnected pores derived from carbonization of the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and starch, where the amorphous carbon can buffer the bulk expansion of SnOx to maintain structural stability and the interconnected pores can store the electrolyte to promote the sodium ion transportation for high rate reaction of the SnOx particles with sodium ion. The reduced graphene oxide as robust framework similar with rebar is inserted into the amorphous carbon/SnOx composite to enhance the stability and conductivity of composite. The starch as pore-creating additive is decomposed during high-heat treatment to form interconnected tunnel-like pores in SnOx/carbon composite for electrolyte storage and high efficient sodium ion transportation. As a result, the as-prepared integrated SnOx/carbon composite anode shows outstanding rate and cycling performance. Constructing the interconnected pore in SnOx/carbon composite using starch can greatly improve its charge specific capacity and rate performance.

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have attracted intensive attention in recent years due to the resource-abundance and low cost of potassium. Here, for the first time, SnO2 nanosheets grown on stainless steel mesh (SnO2/SSM) were used as a novel binder free anode for KIBs. A high capacity of 351mAhg−1 is achieved after 100cycles at current density of 50mAg−1. Even more, a high capacity of 128mAhg−1 can be obtained at 1000mAg−1 after 200cycles. These good electrochemical performances are mainly due to the large surface area of SnO2 nanosheets and the roles of current collector and stable conductive skeleton SSM played.

Abstract:Sub-nanoclusters with ultra-small particle sizes are particularly significant to create advanced energy storage materials. Herein, Sn sub-nanoclusters encapsulated in nitrogen-doped multichannel carbon matrix (denoted as Sn-SCs@MCNF) are designed by a facile and controllable route as flexible anode for high-performance potassium ion batteries (PIBs). The uniformly dispersed Sn sub-nanoclusters in multichannel carbon matrix can be precisely identified, which ensure us to clarify the size influence on the electrochemical performance. The sub-nanoscale effect of Sn-SCs@MCNF restrains electrode pulverization and enhances the K+ diffusion kinetics, leading to the superior cycling stability and rate performance. As freestanding anode in PIBs, Sn-SCs@MCNF manifests superior K+ storage properties, such as exceptional cycling stability (331 mAh g-1 after 150 cycles at 100 mA g-1) and rate capability. Especially, the Sn-SCs@MCNF||KFe[Fe(CN)6] full cell demonstrates impressive reversible capacity of 167 mAh g-1 at 0.4 A g-1 even after 200 cycles. Theoretical calculations clarify that the ultrafine Sn sub-nanoclusters are beneficial for electron transfer and contribute to the lower energy barriers of the intermediates, thereby resulting in promising electrochemical performance. Comprehensive investigation for the intrinsic K+ storage process of Sn-SCs@MCNF is revealed by in situ analysis. This work provides vital guidance to design sub-nanoscale functional materials for high-performance energy-storage devices.

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) has been widely used as an anode material for sodium-ion storage because of its high theoretical capacity. However, it suffers from large volume expansion and poor conductivity. To overcome these limitations, in this study, we have designed and prepared Mo-doped SnO2 nanoflake arrays anchored on carbon foam (Mo-SnO2@C-foam with 38.41 wt% SnO2 and 3.7 wt% Mo content) by a facile hydrothermal method. The carbon foam serves as a three-dimensional conductive network and a buffer skeleton, contributing to improved rate performance and cycling stability. In addition, Mo doping enhances the kinetics of sodium-ion transfer, and the interlaced SnO2 nanoflake arrays is beneficial to promote the conversion reactions during the charge/discharge process. The as-prepared composite with a unique structure demonstrate a high initial capacity of 1017.1 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 A g(-1), with a capacity retention over three times higher than that of the control sample (SnO2@C-foam) at 1 A g(-1), indicating a remarkable rate performance. Ultrafine SnO 2 Nanoparticles Decorated on N-Doped Highly Structurally Connected Carbon Nanospheres as Anode Materials for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Although SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) can provide high specific capacities for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), they are susceptible to rapid deterioration due to SnO2 NP aggregation during charge–discharge cycles. Herein, we report a simple hydrothermal method to prepare SnO2 NPs decorated on highly structurally connected carbon nanospheres (HS-CCNs) without or with nitrogen doping. SnO2/N-HS-CCN functioned admirably as an anode material for SIBs, with a reversible capacity of 294 mA h g–1 after 150 cycles at 0.1 A g–1, which is significantly higher than that in previous findings. In addition, the integration of the synergistic effects of SnO2 and N-HS-CCN resulted in largely improved electrochemical behaviors compared with HS-CCN (undoped material), non-dispersed SnO2, and pure N-HS-CCN. This work highlights the role of nitrogen-doped carbon materials in effectively bridging nano-SnO2 particles with high electron mobility, thus offering high capacity in SIBs from low to medium–high current densities.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A controllable particle attachment crystallization strategy of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is used to construct Sn3(PO4)2 superstructure as long‐life potassium/sodium‐ion batteries anodes. The storage mechanisms of Na+ and K+ in Sn3(PO4)2 are revealed for the first time. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and finite element analysis (FEA) simulations are conducted to analyze the underlying physicochemical mechanism. The structures of anode materials significantly affect their properties in rechargeable batteries. Material nanosizing and electrode integrity are both beneficial for performance enhancement of batteries, but it is challenging to guarantee optimized nanosizing particles and high structural integrity simultaneously. Herein, a programmable assembly strategy of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) is used to construct a Sn‐based MOF superstructure precursor. After calcination under inert atmosphere, the as‐fabricated Sn3(PO4)2@phosphorus doped carbon (Sn3(PO4)2@PC‐48) well inherited the morphology of Sn‐MOF superstructure precursor. The resultant new material exhibits appreciable reversible capacity and low capacity degradation for K+ storage (144.0 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1 with 90.1% capacity retained after 10000 cycles) and Na+ storage (202.5 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1 with 96.0% capacity retained after 8000 cycles). Detailed characterizations, density functional theory calculations, and finite element analysis simulations reveal that the optimized electronic structure and the stress‐dispersed superstructure morphology of Sn3(PO4)2@PC promote the electronic conductivity, enhance K+/ Na+ binding ability and improve the structure stabilization efficiently. This strategy to optimize the structure of anode materials by controlling the MOF growth process offer new dimension to regulate the materials precisely in the energy field.

Abstract:SnO2@C nanocomposites are easily synthesized in a large scale by the hydrolysis of Sn4+ ions in a polyacrylic acid (PAA) hydrogel system, followed by the decomposition of Sn(OH)4 and carbonization of PAA by heat treatment in one-system. The SnO2@C nanocomposites contain uniform ultrafine SnO2 nanoparticles (≈4.3 nm) homogenously embedded in a three-dimensional carbon matrix. This unique structure efficiently suppresses the particle pulverization and aggregation of SnO2, thus maintaining the electrode integrity during long-term lithiation/delithiation process. The discharge capacity of SnO2@C nanocomposites is maintained at ∼597.3 mAh g−1 after 220 cycles. This scalable approach has great potential in the applications of high-capacity anodes in Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have becoming a prospective energy storage technique, due to the abundant potassium resources in the earth crust, approximate redox potential and similar electrochemical behavior of potassium and lithium. However, the insufficient capacity, poor stability and volume expansion of electrode materials during charge and discharge are main factors restricting the further development of KIBs. This work reports an amorphous carbon coated SnO2 nanohseets on hard carbon hollow spheres (AC/SnO2@HCHS) anode with enhanced potassium storage performance. The HCHS acts as a carrier for SnO2 nanosheets, providing high electrical conductivity and stable skeleton. The self-assembled SnO2 nanosheets with high surface area ensures sufficient contact with the electrolyte. Amorphous carbon wrapping can not only relieve SnO2 volume expansion but also provide surface-induced capacitive capacity. As a consequence, the AC/SnO2@HCHS anode presents excellent potassium-ion storage performance with high discharge capacity of 346 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 over 200 cycles, ultra-long cycling lifetime and outstanding rate capability (236 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 over 1000 cycles).

Abstract:Tin dioxide (SnO2) is considered as one of promising anode materials in lithium-ion batteries due to its high specific discharge capacity, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, practical application of SnO2 is still hindered by severe capacity fading, poor cycling stability and inferior rate performance due to volume expansion during charge/discharge processes. To overcome this problem, composites of flower-like carbon layer (thickness: ~1.5 nm) enwrapped SnO2/Cu2O (thickness: ~20 nm; length: ~ 200 nm) anchored on Cu foam were in-situ synthesized by facile hydrothermal method and subsequent annealing. Compared with pure SnO2, such novel hierarchical structure effectively enhancs the conductivity and structural stability of the composites as integrated electrode for lithium-ion batteries. Electrochemical studies reveal superior lithium storage capability, cycle stability, and rate performance for C@SnO2/Cu2O nanosheet clusters with discharge capacity of 1726 mAh g−1 in first cycle and 814 mAh g−1 after 300 cycles at 0.5 C, as well as 425 mAh g−1 at 2 A g−1. Therefore, C@SnO2/Cu2O nanosheet clusters possess great potential for scientific research and future application in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Herein, we present a freestanding and flexible 3D nanocomposite made of polyhedral spherical FeCoS 2 and nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanofibers (FeCoS 2 @N-HCNFs) that is synthesized through coaxial electrospinning, high-temperature calcination, and a facile solvothermal process. As a binder-free anode composite for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), FeCoS 2 @N-HCNFs presents a high specific discharge capacity on the first lap (701.2 mAh g -1 at 100 mA g -1 ) and superior cycling stability (132.6 mAh g -1 at 3200 mA g -1 after 600 cycles). The impressive electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the unique 3D structure, such as the enormous specific surface area of the mesoporous structure beneficial for K + transfer; the three-dimensional hollow carbon nanofiber scaffold enhances structural stability; and polyhedral spherical FeCoS 2 improves overall specific capacity. According to the above description, the FeCoS 2 @N-HCNFs anode is a promising candidate for advanced potassium-ion batteries.

Ultrafine SnO2 Nanoparticles Decorated on N-Doped Highly Structurally Connected Carbon Nanospheres as Anode Materials for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Although SnO2nanoparticles (NPs) can provide highspecific capacities for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), they aresusceptible to rapid deterioration due to SnO2NP aggregationduring charge-discharge cycles. Herein, we report a simplehydrothermal method to prepare SnO2NPs decorated on highlystructurally connected carbon nanospheres (HS-CCNs) without orwith nitrogen doping. SnO2/N-HS-CCN functioned admirably as ananode material for SIBs, with a reversible capacity of 294 mA h g-1after 150 cycles at 0.1 A g-1, which is significantly higher than that inpreviousfindings. In addition, the integration of the synergisticeffects of SnO2and N-HS-CCN resulted in largely improvedelectrochemical behaviors compared with HS-CCN (undopedmaterial), non-dispersed SnO2, and pure N-HS-CCN. This workhighlights the role of nitrogen-doped carbon materials in effectivelybridging nano-SnO2particles with high electron mobility, thus offering high capacity in SIBs from low to medium-high currentdensities.

Abstract:The investigation of carbonaceous-based anode materials will promote the fast application of low-cost potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Here a nitrogen and oxygen co-doped yolk-shell carbon sphere (NO-YS-CS) is constructed as anode material for K-ion storage. The novel architecture, featuring with developed porous structure and high surface specific area, is beneficial to achieving excellent electrochemical kinetics behavior and great electrode stability from buffering the large volume expansion. Furthermore, the N/O heteroatoms co-doping can not only boost the adsorption and intercalation ability of K-ion but also increase the electron transfer capability. It is also demonstrated by experimental results and DFT calculations that K-ion insertion/extraction proceeds through both intercalation and surface capacitive adsorption mechanisms. As expected, the NO-YS-CS electrodes show high initial charge capacity of 473.7 mAh g-1 at 20 mA g-1 , ultralong cycling life over 2500 cycles with the retention of 85.8% at 500 mA g-1 , and superior rate performance (183.3 mAh g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 ). The K-ion full cell, with a high energy density of 271.4 Wh kg-1 and an excellent cyclic stability over 500 cycles, is successfully fabricated with K2 Fe[Fe(CN)6 ] cathode. This work will provide new insight on the synthesis and mechanism understanding of high-performance hard carbon anode for PIBs.
