Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) is an attractive anode in lithium ion batteries (LIBs), but its applications have been significantly hampered by the huge volume change during the electrochemical cycling. In this work we demonstrate a rational design of crystalline SnO2@amorphous TiO2 core-shell nanostructures, where the crystalline SnO2 core was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and the amorphous TiO2 shell was deposited by atomic layer deposition. The SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures deliver excellent performances during the electrochemical process, having a high reversible capacity of 1259 mAh g(-1) at cycling rate of 80 mA g(-1), which is still up to 703 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles. The acceptable rate capacity is also revealed with 412 mAh g(-1) at 400mA g(-1). The coulombic efficiency is stable at around 100% regardless of cycling rates and numbers. The electrochemical performances of the SnO2@TiO2 batteries are better than those of the SnO2 ones without TiO2 coating. In the SnO2@TiO2 nanostructures, the amorphous TiO2 shell layer can experience an isotropic stress, having the ability to evidently reduce the volume change, lattice stress and so the risk of fracture during the cycling process, which is responsible for their outstanding behaviors. The strategy provided in our study is expected to be a precious guideline for designing an ideal electrode for energy storage devices. (c) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
High rate and long cycle life porous carbon nanofiber paper anodes for potassium-ion batteries

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are an emerging energy storage technology for low cost and large scale applications. However, they suffer from insufficient cycle life and poor rate capability caused by the large K ions. In this paper, these problems are circumvented by using free-standing porous carbon nanofiber (CNF) paper anodes. Excellent electrochemical performance was demonstrated with an extremely high rate capability retaining 100 mA h g(-1) at the current rate of 7.7 A g(-1), a high reversible capacity of 270 mA h g(-1) and a very low decay rate of 0.01% per cycle over 1200 cycles, which are much better than those of previously reported anode materials in KIBs and even in most sodium-ion batteries. The superior performance is attributed to the unique structure of CNFs, in which the porous structure can effectively alleviate the volume expansion induced by the insertion of large K ions. Considering the abundance and widespread distribution of potassium in the Earth's crust, the encouraging results make KIBs a strong competitor to Na-ion batteries as an alternative energy storage technology to Li-ion batteries.

Abstract:Tin oxide (SnO2) has been considered as one of the most promising anodes for advanced rechargeable batteries due to its advantages such as high energy density, earth abundance and environmental friendly. However, its large volume change during the Li-Sn/Na-Sn alloying and de-alloying processes will result in a fast capacity degradation over a long term cycling. To solve this issue, in this work we design and synthesize a novel honeycomb-like composite composing of carbon encapsulated SnO2 nanospheres embedded in carbon film by using dual templates of SiO2 and NaCl. Using these composites as anodes both in lithium ion batteries and sodium-ion batteries, no discernable capacity degradation is observed over hundreds of long term cycles at both low current density (100 mA g(-1)) and high current density (500 mA g(-1)). Such a good cyclic stability and high delivered capacity have been attributed to the high conductivity of the supported carbon film and hollow encapsulated carbon shells, which not only provide enough space to accommodate the volume expansion but also prevent further aggregation of SnO2 nanoparticles upon cycling. By engineering electrodes of accommodating high volume expansion, we demonstrate a prototype to achieve high performance batteries, especially high-power batteries. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The commercialization of Sn-based anodes for lithium ion batteries is still hindered due to the inherent volume change leading to a rapid capacity fading during the electrochemical cycle. Inspired by echeveria, a plant that stores sufficient water in its hierarchical leaves to survive in a drought, we report a breakthrough by designing the hierarchical and nanoporous SnO2 electrode encapsulated with ultrathin carbon layer (∼2nm). As evidently captured by in situ transmission electron microscopy, the conformal carbon coating on the surface of anode may provide an elastic cover that suppresses the cracks due to severe volume change, and increases both electrical and ionic conductivity, allowing the cells to exhibit excellent lithium storage performance with more than 800 cycles even with relatively high-rate of current densities.

Abstract:Tin (Sn) has been considered as a promising anode material for sodium ion battery due to its high specific capacity. However, its poor cycling stability and rate performance hinders the real application. Inspired by the structure of reinforced concrete and tunnel, an integrated SnOx/carbon composite anode was designed for high performance sodium ion batteries. In this structure, the SnOx nanoparticles were embedded in the amorphous carbon with interconnected pores derived from carbonization of the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and starch, where the amorphous carbon can buffer the bulk expansion of SnOx to maintain structural stability and the interconnected pores can store the electrolyte to promote the sodium ion transportation for high rate reaction of the SnOx particles with sodium ion. The reduced graphene oxide as robust framework similar with rebar is inserted into the amorphous carbon/SnOx composite to enhance the stability and conductivity of composite. The starch as pore-creating additive is decomposed during high-heat treatment to form interconnected tunnel-like pores in SnOx/carbon composite for electrolyte storage and high efficient sodium ion transportation. As a result, the as-prepared integrated SnOx/carbon composite anode shows outstanding rate and cycling performance. Constructing the interconnected pore in SnOx/carbon composite using starch can greatly improve its charge specific capacity and rate performance.

Abstract:Improving the reversible capacity and sluggish reaction kinetics of SnO2-based anodes have attracted considerable attention. Herein, an effective strategy by anchoring ultrafine (~5 nm) and high content SnO2 nanoparticles (~90%) in ordered mesoporous carbon framework (SnO2@OMC) is proposed to advance anode materials in lithium ion batteries. The ultrafine SnO2 and ordered mesoporous, which not only shorten the diffusion distance of Li+ and decrease the polarization, but also enhance the conversion reaction of SnO2 and interfacial storage of Li+. Benefiting from the novel strategy and elaborate design, the obtained SnO2@OMC anodes deliver a high reversible capacity (930 mAh g−1 after 150 cycles at 0.2 A g−1) and excellent rate capabilities (321 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1). After assessment of the rate capability, SnO2@OMC anodes still display stable capacity.

Abstract:SnO2-based composites have attracted considerable attention as anode for lithium-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacity and cost-effectiveness. However, capacity fading often occurs due to the severe volume expansion and cracking during cycling. Herein, ultra-small Sn(OH)4 nanoparticles have been deposited on the surface of mesocarbon microbeads (MCMB) via a low-temperature air-oxidation treatment. The in-situ oxygenated functional groups from beta-resin on the surface of MCMB lead to the high loading of Sn(OH)4 nanoparticles with the sizes of 2-3 nm. Interestingly, compared to SnO2, the as-prepared Sn(OH)4 nanoparticles in the composite exhibits a higher reversible specific capacity of 850 mA h g-1 after 50 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1. This is because the small sizes of Sn(OH)4 NPs buffer the large volume expansion and remain stable structure during cycling. The electrochemical reaction mechanism of Sn(OH)4 is further clarified, in which the generated LiOH can effectively prevent the Sn agglomeration. LiOH also enables the composite to show low diffusion impedance and better electrochemical performance. Therefore, novel Sn(OH)4/MCMB composite provides the possibility for practical energy storage devices.

Abstract:Ultrafine SnO2/Sn nanoparticles encapsulated into an adjustable meso-/macroporous carbon matrix have been successfully fabricated by the in situ SiOx sacrificial strategy. The control over the void space in the carbon matrix effectively improves the accessibility of the SnO2/Sn toward an electrolyte solution. More importantly, the void space also provides an efficient means to accommodate the mechanical stress caused by the volume change of the SnO2/Sn over cycles. As a result, the enhanced electrolyte accessibility and suppressed mechanical stress improve the electrochemical performance regarding reversible capacity, cyclic stability, and rate capability. A reversible capacity of 1105 mAh g-1 is still retained after 290 cycles at 200 mAg-1, and the capacity still can keep at 107 mAh g-1 at a high current density of 10 A g-1.

Abstract:SnO2 has high capacity but poor cycling stability for Li-ion batteries due to pulverization and aggregation. Herein, we tackle these two challenges by uniformly dispersing carbon coated nanoSnO(2) into a micro-sized porous carbon matrix to form a nano-SnO2/C composite anode using a facile and scalable in situ synthesis strategy. The SnO2@C nanocomposite exhibits a capacity of 640 mA h g(-1) at 500 mA g(-1) in the initial 150 cycles and then increases to 720 mA h g(-1) and maintains this capacity for 420 cycles. The superior electrochemical performance with long cycle lifetimes of the carbon foam-SnO2 nanocomposites could be attributed to their unique carbon microstructures: the network of carbon sheets provides favorable electron transport, while the interconnected micro-/mesopores can serve as the effective channels of lithium ion transport, thereby supplying short lithium ion diffusion pathways. Meanwhile, these pores surrounding the active species of nanoSnO(2) along with flexible carbon nanosheets can accommodate the severe volume variations during prolonged electrochemical cycling and mitigate the Sn aggregation. The present study provides a large-scale synthesis route to synthesize SnO2-based anode materials with superior electrochemical performance for lithium ion batteries.
A nanoscale interlayer void design enabling high-performance SnO2-carbon anodes

Abstract:SnO2 is considered as a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in view of its high theoretical capacity. However, the large volume change and low reversible capacity of SnO2 anode have restricted its practical application. In this study, the two issues were overcome by fabricating SnO2-carbon composite with an optimized structure: SnO2/carbon nanoclusters, composed of ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals and carbon boundary, with well-defined interlayer void space were monodispersed encapsulated in graphene-supported carbon framework (denoted SCVC composite). The nanoscale interlayer gap could buffer volume expansion of SnO2. The numerous carbonaceous boundaries between ultrafine SnO2 nanocrystals could prevent Sn/LixSn coarsening, guaranteeing sufficient Sn/Li2O interdiffusion and enhancing conversion fraction of Sn and Li2O to SnO2 during charging. While the graphene-based carbon framework would enable a fast ion/electron transport and stable solid electrolyte interface. As a result, the SCVC-based LIBs delivered a high reversible capacity, ultralong cycling life-span and excellent rate capability. A capacity of 643 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1 was retained after 1000 cycles for the SCVC anode. A high reversible capacity accessibility of 1239 mAh g-1 could be reached at 0.5 A g-1 for the SnO2 component in SCVC anode.

Abstract:Herein, ultrasmall nanostructured Co3O4 particles have been prepared by a facile two-step synthetic method and furthermore applied to lithium-ion batteries. Benefitting from an increased specific surface area and improved tolerance for volume expansion, they deliver an extremely high specific capacity of 1432.7 mA h g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and an outstandingly long cycle life with about 511.2 mA h g-1 at 10 A g-1 after 2000 cycles. This work will pave a new way to engineer advanced electrode materials for long-lived high-rate lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Amorphous SnO2 nanoparticles embedded into a three-dimensional porous carbon matrix labeled as Am-SnO2@P-C are precisely customized through a phase separation process of tin salts and polyacrylonitrile/polyvinylpyrrolidone/N, N-dimethylformamide polymer mixed solution with the presence of deionized water and combining with heat treatments. The targeted composite powders are characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscope, transmission electron microscope, and scanning electron microscope, in which amorphous SnO2 nanoparticles with ultrafine diameters are uniformly distributed across the three-dimensional porous carbon matrix. The Am-SnO2@P-C composite electrode can deliver an initial discharge and charge specific capacity of 1557.6 and 1194.4 mAh/g with an initial coulombic efficiency of 76.7 % at 100 mA/g, and the discharge specific capacity can be retained at 886.4 mAh/g after 200 cycles. Moreover, the Am-SnO2@P-C composite electrode also exhibits great rate capability, in which the electrode can deliver a reversible capacity of 581.1 mAh/g at the current density as high as 1.0 A/g with a capacity retention of 92.8 % after 500 cycles. Furthermore, the kinetics investigations of pseudocapacitive contributions and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on the as-prepared composite electrodes demonstrate the fast electrochemical kinetics of the Am-SnO2@P-C electrode due to the synergistic effect of the ultrafine size of amorphous SnO2 nanoparticles and the porous carbon matrix. Those findings and understandings of the SnO2 based electrodes may offer some a prospective strategy of the metal-oxide based anodes for lithium-ion batteries in the field of energy storages.

Abstract:Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) have becoming a prospective energy storage technique, due to the abundant potassium resources in the earth crust, approximate redox potential and similar electrochemical behavior of potassium and lithium. However, the insufficient capacity, poor stability and volume expansion of electrode materials during charge and discharge are main factors restricting the further development of KIBs. This work reports an amorphous carbon coated SnO2 nanohseets on hard carbon hollow spheres (AC/SnO2@HCHS) anode with enhanced potassium storage performance. The HCHS acts as a carrier for SnO2 nanosheets, providing high electrical conductivity and stable skeleton. The self-assembled SnO2 nanosheets with high surface area ensures sufficient contact with the electrolyte. Amorphous carbon wrapping can not only relieve SnO2 volume expansion but also provide surface-induced capacitive capacity. As a consequence, the AC/SnO2@HCHS anode presents excellent potassium-ion storage performance with high discharge capacity of 346 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 over 200 cycles, ultra-long cycling lifetime and outstanding rate capability (236 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 over 1000 cycles).

Abstract:The investigation of carbonaceous-based anode materials will promote the fast application of low-cost potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). Here a nitrogen and oxygen co-doped yolk-shell carbon sphere (NO-YS-CS) is constructed as anode material for K-ion storage. The novel architecture, featuring with developed porous structure and high surface specific area, is beneficial to achieving excellent electrochemical kinetics behavior and great electrode stability from buffering the large volume expansion. Furthermore, the N/O heteroatoms co-doping can not only boost the adsorption and intercalation ability of K-ion but also increase the electron transfer capability. It is also demonstrated by experimental results and DFT calculations that K-ion insertion/extraction proceeds through both intercalation and surface capacitive adsorption mechanisms. As expected, the NO-YS-CS electrodes show high initial charge capacity of 473.7 mAh g-1 at 20 mA g-1 , ultralong cycling life over 2500 cycles with the retention of 85.8% at 500 mA g-1 , and superior rate performance (183.3 mAh g-1 at 1.0 A g-1 ). The K-ion full cell, with a high energy density of 271.4 Wh kg-1 and an excellent cyclic stability over 500 cycles, is successfully fabricated with K2 Fe[Fe(CN)6 ] cathode. This work will provide new insight on the synthesis and mechanism understanding of high-performance hard carbon anode for PIBs.

Abstract:Tin selenides have been attracting great attention as anode materials for the state-of-the-art rechargeable sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity and low cost. However, they deliver unsatisfactory performance in practice, owing to their intrinsically low conductivity, sluggish kinetics and volume expansion during the charge-discharge process. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of SnSe 2 nanocrystals coupled with hierarchical porous carbon (SnSe 2 NCs/C) microspheres for boosting SIBs in terms of capacity, rate ability and durability. The unique structure of SnSe 2 NCs/C possesses several advantages, including inhibiting the agglomeration of SnSe 2 nanoparticles, relieving the volume expansion, accelerating the diffusion kinetics of electrons/ions, enhancing the contact area between the electrode and electrolyte and improving the structural stability of the composite. As a result, the as-obtained SnSe 2 NCs/C microspheres show a high reversible capacity (565 mA h g −1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g −1 ), excellent rate capability, and long cycling life stability (363 mA h g −1 at 1 A g −1 after 1000 cycles), which represent the best performances among the reported SIBs based on SnSe 2 -based anode materials.

Abstract:Transition metal sulfides (TMSs), owing to their high theoretical specific capacity, unique chemical and physical properties, were established as promising anode materials for potassium-ion batteries. However, the large volume expansion of the well-crystallized TMSs has an important influence on the structural stability during cycling. Herein, amorphous cobalt sulfide/N-doped carbon core/shell nanoparticles (ACSNPs) are obtained and work as preeminent anode and display excellent potassium storage performance. After 200 cycles, the ACSNPs show a reversible capacity of 253.4 mAh g−1 at 50 mA g−1, with a much better cycling stability than commercial cobalt sulfide. Amorphous cobalt sulfide wrapped in a N-doped flexible carbon shell not only suppresses the aggregation of small grains, but also confines the cobalt sulfide particles and inhibits large volume expansion during K-ion intercalation/deintercalation.

Abstract:Tin peroxide (SnO2) is one of most potential anode materials for lithium ion batteries with high energy density because of its appropriate (de)lithiation potential and high specific capacity. However, the poor cycling property of SnO2 restricts its wide application in lithium ion battery. Herein, a novel monodispersed porous SnO2 nanospheres/graphene/porous carbon composite electrode with excellent performance is constructed. In this electrode, the SnO2 nanospheres with a diameter of ~60nm are embedded in porous carbon, which is filled between the interlayers of graphene sheets. The carbon can protect the SnO2 nanospheres from contacting with the electrolyte. The pores inside both SnO2 nanospheres and carbon can accommodate the huge volume expansion of SnO2 nanoparticles during charge–discharge process. The graphene sheets can greatly improve the strength, stability and flexibility of the electrode. The framework formed by graphene and porous carbon can successfully prevent the aggregation of SnO2 nanospheres and collapse of SnO2 composite electrode. As a result, the composite electrode shows excellent rate performance, which achieves discharge capacities of 816.3, 704.6, 600 and 459.4mAhg−1 at current densities of 0.2, 0.5, 1 and 2Ag−1 and delivers a capacity of 873.2mAhg−1 after 200 cycles at 0.2Ag−1.
