Abstract:Applications and services must adapt to changing contexts in dynamic environments. However, building context-aware applications is still complex and time-consuming due to inadequate infrastructure support. We propose a context-aware infrastructure for building and rapidly prototyping such applications in a smart-home environment. This OSGi-based infrastructure manages context-aware services reliably and securely and efficiently supports context acquisition, discovery, and reasoning. A formal, ontology-based context model enables semantic context representation, reasoning, and knowledge sharing. We propose an ontology-based context model that leverages Semantic Web technology and OWL (Web Ontology Language). OWL is an ontology markup language that enables context sharing and context reasoning. Based on our context model, we also propose a service-oriented context-aware middleware (SOCAM) architecture, including a set of independent services that perform context discovery, acquisition, and interpretation.

Abstract:In order to screen heterogeneity of sensor hardware and support rapid development of applications in context-awareness, the idea of middleware is widely adopted In this paper, the middleware is proposed to support the application development of context-awareness under the new-type networks environment represented by wireless sensor networks. It applies the updated service-oriented and light-weight structure with excellent expansibility and efficiency in the running process. Additionally, the architecture of middleware mainly contains five layers and two cross-layer modules: hardware abstract, service registry, context model, reasoning and application presentation layers; energy management module and security module. During the process of context-awareness, the new method of awareness synchronization is designed to ensure the sensitivity to context switch. At the end of the paper, a healthcare scenario is used to validate the design methodology and demonstrate the supporting function of middleware.

Abstract:Heterogeneity and uncertainty are two main characteristics of pervasive computing environment and CSCW. CSCW can be viewed as a special case of pervasive computing. Middleware is a good approach to accommodate heterogeneous and dynamically changing devices for CSCW and pervasive computing. In this paper, we propose the service discovery method adopted in our DOM-based middleware architecture, which aims to support as many types of pervasive environments as possible. Services in our middleware architecture are dynamically structured and can be adapted to the environments' changes or users' requirements. Our middleware architecture can also be used to support service collaboration in CSCW.

Abstract: Computing becomes increasingly mobile and pervasive today; these changes imply that applications and services must be aware of and adapt to their changing contexts in highly dynamic environments. Today, building context-aware systems is a complex task due to lack of an appropriate infrastructure support in intelligent environments. A context-aware infrastructure requires an appropriate context model to represent, manipulate and access context information. In this paper, we propose a formal context model based on ontology using OWL to address issues including semantic context representation, context reasoning and knowledge sharing, context classification, context dependency and quality of context. The main benefit of this model is the ability to reason about various contexts. Based on our context model, we also present a Service-Oriented Context-Aware Middleware (SOCAM) architecture for building of context-aware services.

Abstract:Architecture of middleware prototype was proposed to support context-awareness development under sensor networks environment,and the design principle of system architecture as well as service-oriented runtime mechanism were emphasized.Then two critical problems were discussed,including method of forming context information and schedule model between context information and high layer in process of awareness.Finally,with the basis of this middleware prototype,the convenience and supporting effect were proved through implementing the specific application which was under healthcare scenarios.

Abstract:The novel mobile scenarios encourage the design and development of context-aware middleware that provides on demand appropriate semantic services services to mobile user's access in a dynamic smart environment, since wireless hotspots and mobile devices are permeating our workplace, home and public places. As mobile users will be immersed in thousands of different kinds of pervasive services, it's of paramount importance to provide appropriate personalized services to the right person in the right form. In this paper we present a collaborative-based service provisioning approach which can enable effective service provision based on social semantic characteristics of user profile, device capability, situation context and services in WLAN enabled environment. We illustrate our ideas through a scenario of service discovery and provision in unfamiliar public places (e.g. airport), and present an OSGi-based middleware to instantiate the service provisioning process based on semantic matchmaking.

Abstract:Context information has emerged as an important resource to enable autonomy and flexibility of ubiquitous applications. The widespread use of context information necessitates an efficient lookup service in a wide-area network over multiple smart spaces. In this paper, we propose a context lookup framework based on a semantic peer-to-peer network to support the building of context-aware applications in multiple smart spaces. Collaborative context-aware applications that utilize different context information in multiple smart spaces can be easily built by invoking a pull or push service provided by our framework. We describe the design of our system, demonstrate the development process of context-aware applications, and report the measurements obtained from our prototype.

Abstract:Ubiquitous networking empowered by Beyond 3G networking makes it possible for mobile users to access networked software services across heterogeneous infrastructures by resource-constrained devices. Heterogeneity and device limitedness creates serious problems for the development and deployment of mobile services that are able to run properly on the execution context and are able to ensures that users experience the "best" Quality of Service possible according to their needs and specific contexts of use. To face these problems the concept of adaptable service is increasingly emerging in the software community. In this paper we describe how CHAMELEON, a declarative framework for tailoring adaptable services, is used within the IST PLASTIC project whose goal is the rapid and easy development/deployment of self-adapting services for B3G networks.

Abstract:In the field of ubiquitous computing, a class of applications called context-aware services attracted great interest especially since the emergence of wireless technologies and mobile devices. Context-aware application can dynamically capture a range of information from its environment and this information represents a context, the application adapts its execution according to this context. An important challenge in ubiquitous computing is dealing with context. Ontologies presents the most promising instrument for context modeling and managing due to their high and formal expressiveness and the possibilities for applying ontology reasoning techniques. In this paper, we present an ontology based approach for the development of context aware services.

Abstract:Context-aware computing is a computing paradigm in which applications can discover and take advantage of context information. Faced with the diverse mix of distributed and heterogeneous sensors, embedded devices and mobile devices in the ubiquitous computing environments, it is fairly difficult for users to develop context-aware applications. This paper proposes ScudWare, a middleware to support the development of context-aware applications. We introduce the developing language, compiling and assembling of a context-aware application. To illustrate the developing process, we design an example which shows how the application adapts to changes in the environments.

Abstract:Almost all context-aware systems have two indispensable components - context provider and context consumer. The former is responsible for supplying diverse context information about users and environments, while the later makes use of context information in building context-aware applications. The diversity of context information from heterogeneous context suppliers to different consumers justifies the need for a generic re-usable middleware to manage context data flow from low-level providers to high-level consumers. As a first step, we propose a declarative quality-aware context middleware specification language. It contains four types of descriptors, namely, point descriptors, connector descriptors, constraint descriptors, and quality descriptors. Through the context middleware specification, context acquisition, integration, and transformation patterns from suppliers to consumers, as well as associated functionality and non-functionality requirements and constraints, can be uniformly declared.

Abstract:With computing becomes more and more ubiquitous, it leads to the highly dynamic and complex computing environments. In this new computing circumstance, the need for novel middleware is widely recognized. Especially, applications should be more context-aware and based on the lightweight middleware infrastructure. In this paper, we present ScudWare, an efficient context-aware and adaptive middleware for ubiquitous computing in smart vehicle space. ScudWare is based on smart OSEK OS, ICAR hybrid network and TinyORB. Its main property is context-aware service based on ontology, which can gather, manage, and disseminate context information for applications easily. Using ScudWare ontology, we can easily tackle issues, such as wide variations in information quality. In addition, we bring forward further discussion of the smart vehicle space in ubiquitous computing environments.

Abstract:Because of the growing interest for mobile device and pervasive applications deployed on cloud computing, the providing of intelligent and ubiquitous context-aware applications that take into account the user's context is one of the main challenges in future applications. In this article we consider how to augment applications aware context used by mobiles device and deployed on cloud computing. The behavior of these applications should depend not only on their internal state and user interactions but also on the context sensed during their execution. Indeed, our approach based on two essential mechanisms, context sensoring and context reasoning. We consider the information acquired by the context sensoring as a product line and we use feature models to represent this information received, the services provided by cloud provider, the available resources and constraints. At the context reasoning step, the context provisioning feature model (CSCAFM) algorithm permits to generate service context-aware that fulfils the requirements of use ensures a certain level of performance of resources.

Abstract:With mobile devices and wireless hotspots becoming more prevalent, customers can desire greater access to media and services that can be achieved from the marrying of these two technologies. However, often existing devices need to be augmented with hardware and software to achieve this connectivity, and the existing services are heterogeneous and incompatible with one another. By leveraging the captive portal mechanism and proposed context-aware technologies, we propose a lightweight framework that can aggregate these services in smart spaces, and allow mobile users to spontaneously discover them without any specialized installation. In this paper, we present the system requirements for spontaneous interaction, the service framework design and implementation details.
