Abstract:The lowest electrode potential and remarkable theoretical specific capacity of lithium (Li) metal make it a promising choice for next-generation high energy density batteries. However, the practical application of Lithium metal anodes (LMAs) faces several significant challenges due to their unwanted reactions with the electrolyte to continuously form Li dendrites. These issues significantly hinder both electrochemical performance and safety. To overcome these challenges, fluorinated organic materials (FOMs), with their unique chemical and physical properties, offer an exciting avenue for enhancing cycle stability and energy density of batteries. This is attributed to their higher electrolytic window and chemical stability. This review would provide a comprehensive overview of the crucial role played by FOMs in safeguarding LMAs, such as F-containing electrolyte engineering, separator modification, and artificial SEI. Additionally, it intends to explore the challenges and latest advances in this domain, with the ultimate objective of offering insights and forward-looking perspectives for future research initiatives in related areas.

Abstract:Abstract Fluorination of Li‐ion cathode materials is of significant interest as it is claimed to lead to significant improvements in long‐term reversible capacity. However, the mechanism by which LiF incorporates and improves performance remains uncertain. Indeed, recent evidence suggests that fluorine is often present as a coating layer rather than incorporated into the bulk of the material. In this work, first‐principles calculations are used to investigate the thermodynamics of fluorination in transition metal oxide cathodes to determine the conditions under which bulk fluorination is possible. It is found that unlike classic well‐ordered cathodes, which cannot incorporate fluorine, disordered rock salt‐structured materials achieve significant fluorination levels due to the presence of locally metal‐poor, lithium‐rich environments that are highly preferred for fluorine. As well as explaining the fluorination process in known materials, this finding is encouraging for the development of new disordered rock salt lithium‐excess transition metal oxides, a promising new class of Li‐ion battery cathode materials that offer superior practical capacity to traditional layered oxides. In particular, it is found that bulk fluorination may serve as an alternative source of Li‐excess in these compounds that can replace the conventional substitution of a heavy redox‐inactive element on the transition metal sublattice.

Abstract:Abstract All-solid-state batteries are appealing electrochemical energy storage devices because of their high energy content and safety. However, their practical development is hindered by inadequate cycling performances due to poor reaction reversibility, electrolyte thickening and electrode passivation. Here, to circumvent these issues, we propose a fluorination strategy for the positive electrode and solid polymeric electrolyte. We develop thin laminated all-solid-state Li||FeF 3 lab-scale cells capable of delivering an initial specific discharge capacity of about 600 mAh/g at 700 mA/g and a final capacity of about 200 mAh/g after 900 cycles at 60 °C. We demonstrate that the polymer electrolyte containing AlF 3 particles enables a Li-ion transference number of 0.67 at 60 °C. The fluorinated polymeric solid electrolyte favours the formation of ionically conductive components in the Li metal electrode’s solid electrolyte interphase, also hindering dendritic growth. Furthermore, the F-rich solid electrolyte facilitates the Li-ion storage reversibility of the FeF 3 -based positive electrode and decreases the interfacial resistances and polarizations at both electrodes.

Abstract:Significance Rechargeable lithium metal battery (RLMB) is the holy grail of high-energy-density batteries. If lithium metal anode (LMA) could be combined with 5-V LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 cathode, energy density could exceed 600 Wh/kg based on the cathode and anode electrode mass. Despite such promises, 5-V RLMB is still a vacant research space so far due to the unavailability of electrolytes which simultaneously satisfy a wide enough electrochemical stability window, good compatibility with LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 , and superior reversibility of LMA. In this work, a class of full-fluoride (FF) electrolyte is invented for 5-V RLMB which not only has good compatibility with cathode and a wide stability window but also possesses the capability to make LMA more stable and reversible.

Abstract:The creation of a fluorinated interphase has emerged as an effective strategy for improving Li‐metal anodes for applications in rechargeable high‐energy batteries. In contrast to the introduction of fluorine‐containing species through widely adopted electrolyte engineering (e.g., salt and fluorinated solvent additive), we reported a Li metal composite design in which LiF could locally redistribute on the Li metal surface in liquid electrolytes via a dissolution‐reprecipitation mechanism, and enable the formation of a high‐fluorine‐content solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). For validation, a Li/Li22Sn5/LiF ternary composite was investigated, where the as‐formed LiF‐rich SEI locked the active Li metal from a corrosive electrolyte. The Li/Li22Sn5/LiF anode displayed an impressive average Coulombic efficiency (∼99.2%) at 1 mA cm−2 and 1 mAh cm−2 in a carbonate electrolyte and a remarkable cycling life of over 1600 h at 1 mA cm−2 and 2 mAh cm−2. Applied to a LiCoO2 full cell with a high cathode areal capacity of 4.0 mAh cm−2, a high capacity retention of ∼91.1% was realized for 100 cycles at 0.5 C in a wide potential range between 2.8 to 4.5 V with a low negative/positive ratio of 2:1. This design is conceptually different from the design employing the widely used fluorine‐containing electrolyte additive to introduce fluorine species in the SEI and provides an alternative approach to realize reliable Li metal batteries. Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal solid-state batteries feature high energy density and improved safety and thus are recognized as promising alternatives to traditional Li-ion batteries. In practice, using Li metal anodes remains challenging because of the lack of a superionic solid electrolyte that has good stability against reduction decomposition at the anode side. Here, we propose a new electrolyte design with an antistructure (compared to conventional inorganic structures) to achieve intrinsic thermodynamic stability with a Li metal anode. Li-rich antifluorite solid electrolytes are designed and synthesized, which give a high ionic conductivity of 2.1 x 10(-4) S cm(-1) at room temperature with three-dimensional fast Li-ion transport pathways and demonstrate high stability in Li-Li symmetric batteries. Reversible full cells with a Li metal anode and LiCoO2 cathode are also presented, showing the potential of Li-rich antifluorites as Li metal-compatible solid electrolytes for high-energy-density solid-state batteries.
Fluorinating the Solid Electrolyte Interphase by Rational Molecular Design for Practical Lithium-Metal Batteries

Abstract:The lifespan of practical lithium (Li)-metal batteries is severely hindered by the instability of Li-metal anodes. Fluorinated solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) emerges as a promising strategy to improve the stability of Li-metal anodes. The rational design of fluorinated molecules is pivotal to construct fluorinated SEI. Herein, design principles of fluorinated molecules are proposed. Fluoroalkyl (-CF2CF2-) is selected as an enriched F reservoir and the defluorination of the C-F bond is driven by leaving groups on beta-sites. An activated fluoroalkyl molecule (AFA), 2,2,3,3-tetrafluorobutane-1,4-diol dinitrate is unprecedentedly proposed to render fast and complete defluorination and generate uniform fluorinated SEI on Li-metal anodes. In Li-sulfur (Li-S) batteries under practical conditions, the fluorinated SEI constructed by AFA undergoes 183 cycles, which is three times the SEI formed by LiNO3. Furthermore, a Li-S pouch cell of 360 Wh kg(-1) delivers 25 cycles with AFA. This work demonstrates rational molecular design principles of fluorinated molecules to construct fluorinated SEI for practical Li-metal batteries.

Abstract:The flammability of organic electrolytes raises increasing safety concerns about the high-capacity batteries of next-generation electric vehicles and smart grid systems. Herein, we report a synthetic dual-functional electrolyte additive bearing two-fold fluorosulfate moieties, which allows flame retardancy without sacrificing battery performance. Electrochemical performance is measured using a high-capacity cell built with Ni-rich LiNi 0.9 Co 0.05 Mn 0.05 O 2 cathode and lithium metal anode. Compared with triphenyl phosphate, which is a known representative flame-retardant, the fluorosulfate-based electrolyte additive shows remarkable capacity retention, reduced interfacial resistance, and enhanced rate capability via the formation of a stable cathode solid electrolyte interfacial layer due to the inflammable sulfite-to-sulfate conversion mechanism.

Abstract:As the peculiar element in the Periodic Table of Elements, fluorine gas owns the highest standard electrode potential of 2.87 V vs. F-, and a fluorine atom has the maximum electronegativity. Benefiting from the prominent property, fluorine plays an important role in the development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) in terms of cathode materials (transition metal fluorides, fluorinated polyanionic compounds), electrolytes, and interfaces. In cathode materials, the highly electronegative renders enhanced ionic character of transition metal fluorine bonds and correspondingly high working potential in electrolytes; fluorinated electrolytes possess good antioxidant ability and flame retardance, which can significantly improve the thermal safety of a battery. On an electrode-electrolyte interface, the fluorine-rich inorganic component (such as LiF and NaF) is essential for the formation of a robust and stable solid electrolyte interface on anodes. Despite the remarkable advances achieved in fluorinated cathodes, electrolytes, and interfaces, there is still a lack of comprehensive understanding of the function of fluorides in LIBs and SIBs. Accordingly, this review briefly summarized the recent progress of fluorine-based electrodes, electrolytes, and interfaces and highlighted the correlation between the composition, property, and function to reveal the fluorine chemistry in LIBs and SIBs. This review will provide guidance for the rational design and targeted regulation of fluorine-dominated high-performance electrode materials, functionalized electrolytes, and consolidated interfaces.
Improving the electrochemical properties of a SiO@C/graphite composite anode for high-energy lithium-ion batteries by adding lithium fluoride

Abstract:Silicon monoxide has attracted wide interest as a negative material for lithium-ion batteries because of its high theoretical capacity. Moreover, in this paper, lithium fluoride serves as an additive, which can improve the initial coulombic efficiency of silicon monoxide-based electrodes. This work develops a simple two-step method to prepare a lithium fluoride-modified SiO@C/graphite composite as an anode for lithium-ion batteries. First, SiO@C is prepared via a chemical vapor deposition method; then, SiO@C/graphite-LiF is obtained by mixing SiO@C, graphite and LiF in a stirrer. The phase composition, particle appearance and electrochemical properties of the SiO@C/graphite-LiF composites are characterized via X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge and discharge analyses. The SiO@C/graphite-7.5% LiF composite shows a high capacity retention rate of over 91% after 100 cycles. The capacity of SiO@C/graphite-LiF is close to 200 mAh g−1 at 3.2 A g−1, which is much higher than that of SiO@C/graphite (only 21 mAh g−1). This result is mainly because Li ion transport is improved during the lithiation/delithiation process and stabilizes the solid electrolyte interface layer due to lithium fluoride addition. The encouraging results suggest that adding lithium fluoride to SiO-based materials is an effective strategy to improve the electrochemical properties and can be applied to high-energy storage systems.

Abstract:Lithium-metal batteries (LMBs) are promising alternatives to state-of-the-art Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) to achieve higher energy densities. However, the poor cyclability of LMBs resulting from Li metal anode (Li0) irreversibility and concomitant electrolyte decompositions limits their practical applications. In this study, we reported a per-fluorinated salt, lithium tetrakis(perfluoro-tertbutyloxy)borate (abbreviated as Li-TFOB) as an electrolyte additive for Li metal batteries, which contains 36 F atoms per molecule. This newly designed ionic additive tuned the chemical composition of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Li0 by increasing the amount of LiF and Li-B-O inorganic species. DFT calculations and Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations indicated the preferential reduction of the TFOB anions at Li0, which occurs with a lower free energy change than PF6- anions. The designed ionic additive enables the 4.6 V Li||LiNi0.6Mn0.2Co0.2O2 (NMC622) cell to achieve an average CE of 99.1% and a high-capacity retention of > 50% after 500 cycles. This experiment-simulation joint study illustrated an attractive approach to accelerating the design of electrolytes and interphases for LMBs.

Abstract:With the increasing development of energy storage, searching a suitable anode comes to be one of the hottest issues in lithium ion batteries. Li4Ti5O12 owns the advantages of long discharge plateau, superior safety and so on, but suffering the low electron conductivity. In this work, a facile method with NF3 for the fluorination of Li4Ti5O12 is applied. Via this method, the enhanced rate performance and larger specific capacity of the fluorination Li4Ti5O12 are obtained. Anion-Tuned Fluorinated Solvation Sheath Enables Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Continuous side reactions between conventional carbonate-based electrolytes and electrodes lead to electrolyte consumption and the growth of lithium dendrites, which always lead to serious capacity fading or safety issues, hindering the development of lithium metal batteries. Here, a nonflammable all-fluorinated electrolyte with the anion-participating Li+ solvation sheath is developed and the corresponding electrochemical properties are studied. Combining theoretical calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, ethyl 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl carbonate (ETFEC) and methyl difluoroacetate (MDFA) as cosolvents in the all-fluorinated electrolyte, PF6- anions accumulate on the lithium metal anode and preferentially reduced to obtain a LiF-rich solid electrolyte layer, inducing uniform lithium metal deposition. Additionally, the anions located in the solvation structure improve the reduction stability of the solvent, which avoids the rapid decline in battery capacity caused by the continued decomposition of the solvent. Consequently, The Li||NCM811 battery achieved initial capacity retention of 71.48% after 430 cycles at a voltage of 4.3 V, and the capacity retention reached 64.52% after 225 cycles even at a high voltage of 4.5 V. This nonflammable electrolyte can alleviate the rapid decline in battery capacity caused by solvent decomposition.
