Abstract:The performance of a wide-band gap copolymer donor PDTPO-BDTT in nonfullerene solar cells was investigated. These solar cells presented broad photoresponse and high short-circuit current density. PDTPO-BDTT:IT-4F and PDTPO-BDTT:NNFA-4F solar cells with more efficient photoluminescence quenching and better film morphology gave decent power conversion efficiencies of 10.96 and 10.04%, respectively, which are much higher than those of the previously reported PDTPO-BDTT:fullerene solar cells.

Abstract:A new weak electron‐deficient building block, bis(2‐ethylhexyl) 2,5‐bis(5‐bromothiophen‐2‐yl) thieno[3,2‐ b ]thiophene‐3,6‐dicarboxylate ( TT‐Th ), is incorporated to construct a wide‐bandgap (1.88 eV) polymer PBDT‐TT for nonfullerene polymer solar cells (NF‐PSCs). PBDT‐TT possesses suitable energy levels and complementary absorption when blended with both ITIC analogues ( ITIC and IT‐M ) and a near‐infrared (NIR) acceptor ( 6TIC ). Moreover, PBDT‐TT exhibits good conjugated planarity and preferable face‐on orientation in the blended thin film, which are beneficial for charge transfer and carrier transport. The PSCs based on PBDT‐TT : IT‐M and PBDT‐TT : 6TIC blend films yield high power conversion efficiencies of 11.38% and 11.03%, respectively. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the PCE of 11.03% for PBDT‐TT : 6TIC‐ based device is one of the highest values reported for NIR NF‐PSCs. This work demonstrates that TT‐Th is a useful new electron‐accepting building block for making p‐type wide bandgap polymers for efficient NIR NF‐PSCs.
Wide-bandgap Donor Polymers Based on a Dicyanodivinyl Indacenodithiophene Unit for Non-Fullerene Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:A wide-bandgap polymer donor with improved efficiency plays an important role in improving the photovoltaic performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs). In this study, two novel wide-bandgap polymer donors, PBDT and PBDT-S, were designed and synthesized based on a dicyanodivinyl indacenodithiophene (IDT-CN) moiety, in which benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b ']dithiophene (BDT) building blocks and IDT-CN are used as electron-sufficient and -deficient units, respectively. In our study, the PBDT and PBDT-S polymer donors exhibited similar frontier-molecular-orbital energy levels and optical properties, and both copolymers showed good miscibility with the widely used narrow-bandgap small molecular acceptor Y6. Non-fullerene polymer solar cells (NF-PSCs) based on PBDT:Y6 exhibited an impressive power conversion efficiency of 10.04% with an open circuit voltage of 0.88 V, a short-circuit current density of 22.16 mA cm(-2) and a fill factor of 51.31%, where the NF-PSCs based on PBDT-S:Y6 exhibited a moderate power conversion efficiency of 6.90%. The enhanced photovoltaic performance, realized by virtue of the improved short-circuit current density, can be attributed to the slightly enhanced electron mobility, higher exciton dissociation rates, more efficient charge collection and better nanoscale phase separation of the PBDT-based device. The results of this work indicate that the IDT-CN unit is a promising building block for constructing donor polymers for high-performance organic photovoltaic cells.
Efficient wide-band-gap copolymer donors for organic solar cells with perpendicularly placed benzodithiophene units

Abstract:The working horses for the drastically improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) were the small-band-gap molecular non-fullerene acceptors. This development not only removed the low performance obstacle for OSCs but also raised needs for wide-band-gap polymers for donor/acceptor mix with complimentary absorptions. Benzodithiophene (BDT) is one of the mostly used unit for constructing donor polymers. Here, we introduced one type of donor polymer with two BDT units placed perpendicularly. This exploration is aimed to reduce the complexity of molecule design, potentially to reduce the cost of donor materials. We also explored the halogenation of BDT side group to optimize the performances of the copolymers. The chlorinated donor polymer PvBDT-Cl delivered a decent PCE of 8.23% with Y6-T. This work explored the possibility of using only BDT unit to construct high performance donor polymers, which is a crucial insight for future low-cost donor polymer design.

Abstract:Two new donoracceptor alternating wide band gap copolymers, PTTDBC-PhQC8 and PTTDBC-BTC12, based on an electron-rich tetrathienodibenzocarbazole (TTDBC) donor have been designed and synthesized, wherein two additional thienyl rings are fused into a 2,7-dithienylcarbazole skeleton to reinforce the structural coplanarity and rigidity of polymers. The quinoid thiophene in TTDBC can endow not only a wide optical band gap (similar to 1.9 eV) but also a deep HOMO (similar to 5.3 eV) for the resulting polymers. The conventional configuration solar cells based on PTTDBC-BTC12 exhibit a large V-oc of 0.91 V and a power conversion efficiency of 4.30% (with a Jsc of 9.27 mA cm2 and a FF of 0.51), while a slightly higher PCE of 4.50% can be achieved for the inverted structure devices. We believe that these wide band gap polymers have potential to be used for tandem cell applications.
A Dithienobenzothiadiazole-Quaterthiophene Wide Bandgap Polymer Enables Non-Fullerene Based Polymer Solar Cells with over 15% Efficiency

Abstract:In this work, a wide bandgap (WBG) polymer donor PDTfBT-4T based on dithienobenzothiadiazole (DTfBT) and quaterthiophene (4T) was synthesized for the application in non-fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs). Polymer PDTfBT-4T showed film absorption peak at 554 nm and optical band gap of 1.93 eV. Complementary absorption and sufficiently energetic offsets could be achieved between the PDTfBT-4T and a benzotriazole-fused Y-series non-fullerene acceptor Y14. The PDTfBT-4T:Y14 active layer could deliver an open-circuit voltage of 0.83 V, a short-circuit current density of 25.42 mA cm-2, and a fill factor of 72.0%, corresponding to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.19%. This is the highest efficiency among WBG polymer donors based on an electrondeficient unit and an oligothiophene, which is also significantly higher than those of the fluorinated or esterified polythiophenes. The results indicate that DTfBT is a powerful electron-deficient unit, which is promising in the construction of simple WBG polymer donors for efficient NFA based PSCs.
Wide bandgap donor polymers containing carbonyl groups for efficient non-fullerene polymer solar cells

Abstract:<p>Two wide bandgap conjugated polymers (PTCO8 and PTCO1) with different side chains, composed of alkylcarbonyl-substituted thiophene (TOC) as the electron-withdrawing unit and two-dimension benzodithiophene (BDT) as the electron-donating unit, are developed for non-fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs). Relative to non-carbonyl-substituted control polymer PTC8, PTCO8 and PTCO1 exhibit a red-shifted absorption and deeper-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level. When blended with ITIC, the as-cast PTCO1-based devices yield a power conversion efficiency of up to 9.33% with an open-circuit voltage of 0.95 V, a short-circuit current density of 16.91 mA cm<sup>-2</sup>, and a fill factor of 57.9%, outperforming those of PTC8-based devices (4.04%) and PTCO8-based devices (5.91%). This work demonstrates that the carbonyl group is a promising electron-deficient moiety to construct wide-bandgap polymers for non-fullerene PSCs. Adjusting the length of side chains is a feasible strategy to improve PSC performance further.</p>

A Novel Wide Bandgap Conjugated Polymer (2.0 Ev) Based on Bithiazole for High Efficiency Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:An efficient wide bandgap conjugated polymer (PTZ6) based on alkoxylphenyl substituted benzodithiophene as donor unit and bithiazole as acceptor unit was developed for polymer solar cells (PSCs). The polymer exhibited a wide bandgap of 2.0eV with strong absorption in the range of 300–620nm, and a low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy level of −5.36eV. The PSCs based on PTZ6: PC71BM show a PCE of 8.1% with a Voc of 0.96V, a Jsc of 10.9mAcm−2 and a high FF of 76.7%, which is among the highest values for the fullerene PSCs based on conjugated polymer donors with bandgap near to 2.0eV. Moreover, for this blend system, the photovoltaic performance of the devices changes little when the active layer thickness increases from 90nm to 220nm. More importantly, the non-fullerene PSCs based on PTZ6: ITIC exhibit a PCE of 10.3% with a high Voc of 1.01V, which should be the best value for the non-fullerene PSCs with the Eloss less than 0.6eV to date. Our results indicate that PTZ6 is a promising wide bandgap polymer donor for the photovoltaic application in PSCs.

Abstract:The molecular design of a wide-bandgap polymer donor is critical to achieve high-performance organic photovoltaic devices. Herein, a new dibenzo-fused quinoxalineimide (BPQI) is successfully synthesized as an electron-deficient building block to construct donor–acceptor (D–A)-type polymers, namely P(BPQI-BDT) and P(BPQI-BDTT), using benzodithiophene and its derivative, which bears different side chains, as the copolymerization units. These two polymers are used as a donor, and the narrow bandgap (2,20-((2Z,20Z)-((12,13-bis(2-ethylhexyl)-3,9-diundecyl-12,13-dihydro-[1,2,5]thiadiazolo [3,4-e]thieno[2,′′30′:4′,50]thieno[20,30:4,5]pyrrolo[3,2g]thieno[20,30:4,5]thieno[3,2-b]indole-2,10 diyl)bis(methanylylidene))bis(5,6-difluoro-3-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-indene-2,1-diylidene))dimalononitrile) Y6 is used as an acceptor to fabricate bulk heterojunction polymer solar cell devices. Y6, as a non-fullerene receptor (NFA), has excellent electrochemical and optical properties, as well as a high efficiency of over 18%. The device, based on P(BPQI-BDTT):Y6, showed power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 6.31% with a JSC of 17.09 mA cm−2, an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.82 V, and an FF of 44.78%. This study demonstrates that dibenzo-fused quinoxalineimide is a promising building block for developing wide-bandgap polymer donors.

Abstract:Two new wide-bandgap D-A-pi copolymer donor materials, PBDT-2TC and PBDT-S-2TC, based on benzodithiophene and asymmetric bithiophene with one carboxylate (2TC) substituent are synthesized by a facile approach for fullerene-free organic solar cells (OSCs). The combination of one carboxylate-substituted thiophene with one thiophene bridge in the backbone substantially reduces the steric hindrance, thereby favoring a planar geometry for efficient charge transport and molecular packing. A reasonable highest-occupied-molecular-orbital energy level in relation to that of the acceptor and balanced hole and electron transport are observed for both polymers. This asymmetric structure unit is flexible and versatile, allowing the absorption, energy levels, and morphology of the blend films to be tailored. Fullerene-free OSCs based on PBDT-S-2TC:ITIC achieve a high power conversion efficiency of 10.12%. More impressively, a successful nonhalogen solvent-processed solar cell with 9.55% efficiency is also achieved, which is one of the highest values for a fullerene-free OSC processed using an ecofriendly solvent.

Abstract:Three novel pyrido[2,3,4,5-lmn]phenanthridine derivatives of 4,9-dialkylpyrido[2,3,4,5-lmn]phenanthridine-5,10-dione, 10-alkoxy-4-alkylpyrido[2,3,4,5-lmn]phenanthridin-5-one, and 5,10-dialkoxypyrido[2,3,4,5-lmn]phenanthridine were synthesized as building blocks of copolymers Pa, Pb and Pc, giving relatively large band gaps of 2.13, 2.19 and 2.21 eV, respectively. Bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells were fabricated in a typical device configuration by utilizing the resulting polymers as the donor of the active layer. A power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.47% was achieved from the Pa-based device without any additives or thermal annealing. A further improved PCE of 4.54% was achieved in inverted device architecture, and it is hitherto the highest efficiency of BHJ polymer solar cells using a donor polymer with a band gap above 2.1 eV.
Wide Bandgap Polymer Donors with an Acceptor1-Π-acceptor2-π Configuration for Efficient Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:To maximize the photovoltaic performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs), polymer donors and nonfullerene acceptors (NFAs) should be designed with complementarily optical and electronic properties as well as desirable morphological features. Currently, high-performance polymer donors are mainly constructed by alternating copolymerization of electron -rich (D) and electron -deficient (A) units. Here, we demonstrate that acceptor 1 - pi-acceptor 2 - pi (A 1 - pi-A 2 - pi)-type polymer donors constructed by copolymerization of two different A units can achieve comparable photovoltaic properties with those of D pi-A- pi-type counterparts. By using the ladder -type 4,10-bis(2-hexyldecyl)-thieno[2",3":5,6]pyrido[3,4-g]thieno-[3,2-c]isoquinoline-5,11-dione as A 1 unit, difluorobenzotriazole or benzodithiophene-4,8-dione as A 2 unit, and thiophene unit as the pi bridge, two A 1 - pi-A 2 - pi-type copolymers, P03 and P07, are successfully synthesized. Due to the weakened intramolecular charge -transfer effect, P03 and P07 exhibit wide bandgaps of 1.88 and 1.74 eV, respectively. In combination with the NFA of L8 -BO, the P03:L8-BO-based blend shows superior crystallinity and uniform phase -separated morphology thereby leading to a higher power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.03 % in comparison with the P07:L8-BObased blend which shows a PCE of 9.84 %. Notably, the 15.03 % efficiency is by far the highest value for PSCs based on A 1 - pi-A 2 - pi-type polymer donors. These results provide useful guidance for the future design of high-performance donor copolymers for PSCs.

Abstract:Incorporation of electron-deficient units into polymer backbones is a promising strategy to enlarge the bandgaps of polymer donor materials. Herein, two wide-bandgap (WBG) polymer donors (P1 and P3) are designed and synthesized by using two different electron-deficient units of 5,10-dihydrodithieno[3,2- c :3′,2′- h ][2,6]naphthyridine-4,9-dione (TND) with different side-chains, and 5,6-difluoro-2-(2-hexyldecyl)-2 H -benzo[ d ][1,2,3]triazole. Due to the strong electron-withdrawing ability of both two building blocks, the two copolymers exhibit large optical bandgaps and low-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels, which are matched with the narrow bandgap nonfullerene acceptor of L8-BO. The alkyl chains on the polymer backbones can affect molecular packing and charge transport properties of the copolymers. P3 with 2-butyloctyl side-chains exhibits an enhanced crystallinity and a preferable face-on molecular orientation. When blended with L8-BO, the best P3-based polymer solar cell (PSC) displays a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 12.56% with an open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) of 0.742 V, a short-circuit current density ( J SC ) of 22.80 mA cm −2 , and a fill factor (FF) of 74.30%. However, the best-performing P1-based PSC shows a relatively low PCE of 10.37%. This study suggests that the polymer donor materials based on two electron-deficient units have great potential in fabricating efficient nonfullerene PSCs.

Abstract:Despite the frequently renewed record high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in recent years, achieving single‐junction polymer solar cells (PSCs) with both high PCE and large open circuit voltage (V OC) remains a challenge because there is a trade‐off between high short circuit current density (J SC) and large V OC values. Here, the design and synthesis of a novel donor–acceptor (D–A) copolymer (PIT2FBT) based on an asymmetric‐indenothiophene donor and a difluorinated benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole acceptor is demonstrated. PIT2FBT exhibits a wide optical bandgap of 1.82 eV with a large ionization potential of 5.54 eV. Through systematic morphology control and device engineering, the best performance solar cell based on PIT2FBT shows a high PCE of 9.01% in combination with a large V OC of 1.0 V. To the best of our knowledge, the PCE is the highest for single‐junction polymer fullerene solar cells with V OCs up to 1.0 V. At the same time, the influences of solvent additive on the active layer morphology together with the resulting device performance are investigated in‐depth. These findings and detailed studies provide an important guidance to tune and optimize the morphology and photovoltaic properties of indenothiophene‐based copolymers, which are promising candidates for short‐wavelength absorbing materials in tandem PSCs.
