Abstract:Suppose two quantum circuit chips are located at different places, for which we do not have any prior knowledge, and cannot see the internal structures either. In such a situation, a realistic and fundamental problem is to find out whether they have the same functions or not with certainty. In this paper, we show that this problem can be solved completely from the viewpoint of quantum nonlocality. Specifically, we design an elegant protocol that examines underlying quantum nonlocality, where the strongest nonlocality can be observed if and only if two quantum circuits are equivalent to each other. We show that the protocol also works approximately, where the distance between two quantum circuits can be calculated accurately by observing quantum nonlocality in an analytical manner. Furthermore, it turns out that the computational cost of our protocol is independent of the size of compared quantum circuits. Lastly, we also discuss the possibility to generalize the protocol to multipartite cases, i.e., if we do equivalence checking for multiple quantum circuits, we try to solve the problem in one go.
Stability and Bifurcation of Disease Spreading in Complex Networks

Abstract:A general nonlinear model of disease spreading is proposed, describing the effect of the new link-adding probability p in the topological transition of the N-W small-world network model. The new nonlinear model covers both limiting cases of regular lattices and random networks, and presents a more flexible internal nonlinear interaction than a previous model. Hopf bifurcation is proved to exist during disease spreading in all typical cases of regular lattices, small-world networks, and random networks described by this model. It is shown that probability p not only determines the topological transition of the N-W small-world network model, but also dominates the stability of the local equilibria and bifurcating periodic solutions, and moreover can be further applied to stabilize a periodic spreading behaviour onto a stable equilibrium over the network.

Abstract:The initial transient phase of an emerging epidemic is of critical importance for data-driven model building, model-based prediction of the epidemic trend, and articulation of control/prevention strategies. In principle, quantitative models for real-world epidemics need to be memory-dependent or non-Markovian, but this presents difficulties for data collection, parameter estimation, computation and analyses. In contrast, the difficulties do not arise in the traditional Markovian models. To uncover the conditions under which Markovian and non-Markovian models are equivalent for transient epidemic dynamics is outstanding and of significant current interest. We develop a comprehensive computational and analytic framework to establish that the transient-state equivalence holds when the average generation time matches and average removal time, resulting in minimal Markovian estimation errors in the basic reproduction number, epidemic forecasting, and evaluation of control strategy. Strikingly, the errors depend on the generation-to-removal time ratio but not on the specific values and distributions of these times, and this universality will further facilitate estimation rectification. Overall, our study provides a general criterion for modeling memory-dependent processes using the Markovian frameworks.

Abstract:A recent paper by R. Muolo, T. Carletti, J. P. Gleeson, and M. Asllani [Entropy 23, 36 (2021)] presents a mainly numerical study on the role of non-normality in the synchronization of coupled periodic oscillators, deriving apparent contradictions with the existing literature. Here, we show that their conclusions are artifactual due to a misinterpretation of the master stability function formalism and confirm that the existing literature is correct. We also point to a broader existing literature in which research considered in this paper was correctly addressed numerically, analytically, and experimentally.

Abstract:For a graph $G,$ let $\alpha(G)$ denote its second smallest Laplacian eigenvalue. The Laplacian Spread Conjecture states that $\alpha(G)+\alpha(\overline{G}) \geq 1,$ where $\overline{G}$ is the complement of $G.$ In this paper, we have corrected two conclusions: First, the necessary and sufficient condition for $\alpha(G) + \alpha(\overline{G}) \geq 1$ is $\parallel \bigtriangledown_{x} - \bigtriangledown_{y} \parallel^{2} \geq 1$ rather than $\parallel \bigtriangledown_{x} - \bigtriangledown_{y} \parallel^{2} \geq 2$ which has been proved in \cite{BS} as demonstrated in our study. Second, we show that the Laplacian spread of balanced digraph $\Gamma$ satisfies $LS(\Gamma) \leq n - \frac{1}{2}$ but not $LS(\Gamma) \leq n - 1$ in \cite{BCEHK}, since inequality $\parallel \bigtriangledown_{x} - \bigtriangledown_{y} \parallel^{2} \geq 2$ does not hold.
