Abstract:Large dimensional random matrix theory (RMT) has provided an efficient analytical tool to understand multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels and to aid the design of MIMO wireless communication systems. However, previous studies based on large dimensional RMT rely on the assumption that the transmit correlation matrix is diagonal or the propagation channel matrix is Gaussian. There is an increasing interest in the channels where the transmit correlation matrices are generally nonnegative definite and the channel entries are non-Gaussian. This class of channel models appears in several applications in MIMO multiple access systems, such as small cell networks (SCNs). To address these problems, we use the generalized Lindeberg principle to show that the Stieltjes transforms of this class of random matrices with Gaussian or non-Gaussian independent entries coincide in the large dimensional regime. This result permits to derive the deterministic equivalents (e.g., the Stieltjes transform and the ergodic mutual information) for non-Gaussian MIMO channels from the known results developed for Gaussian MIMO channels, and is of great importance in characterizing the spectral efficiency of SCNs.

Abstract:Prior asymptotic performance analyses are based on the series expansion of the moment-generating function (MGF) or the probability density function (PDF) of channel coefficients. However, these techniques fail for lognormal fading channels because the Taylor series of the PDF of a lognormal random variable is zero at the origin and the MGF does not have an explicit form. Although lognormal fading model has been widely applied in wireless communications and free-space optical communications, few analytical tools are available to provide elegant performance expressions for correlated lognormal channels. In this paper, we propose a novel framework to analyze the asymptotic outage probabilities of selection combining (SC), equal-gain combining (EGC), and maximum-ratio combining (MRC) over equally correlated lognormal fading channels. Based on these closed-form results, we show: 1) the outage probability of EGC or MRC becomes an infinitely small quantity compared to that of SC at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR); 2) channel correlation can cause an infinite performance loss at high SNR; and 3) negatively correlated lognormal channels can outperform the independent lognormal channels. The analyses reveal insights into the long-standing problem of asymptotic performance analyses over correlated lognormal channels, and circumvent the time-consuming Monte Carlo simulation and numerical integration.

Abstract:Small cell networks under dynamic time-division duplex (D-TDD) transmission have emerged as a promising solution to accommodate the varied uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) traffic in next generation cellular mobile communication networks. By allowing each cell to individually configure its communication direction, D-TDD allocates resources to accommodate whichever transmission direction needs it most. However, with unaligned transmissions, the interference increases and limits the performance of mean packet throughput (MPT). In this paper, we study the small cell networks under D-TDD with cell clustering being the interference mitigation technique (clustered D-TDD). By leveraging stochastic geometry and queuing theory, we develop an analytical framework that captures both spatial and temporal randomness. We study the MPT whose analytical expression is verified via simulation, and based on the analysis, we explore the impact from different network and service parameters. In particular, numerical results show that there is an optimal cluster size for DL MPT, while UL MPT always benefits from increasing cluster size. By grouping cells into clusters, the clustered D-TDD can provide the flexible service compared with static time-division duplex (S-TDD), and provide significant improvement over a traditional D-TDD in terms of UL MPT at a small cost of DL MPT.

Abstract:In this paper, a deterministic equivalent of ergodic sum rate and an algorithm for evaluating the capacity-achieving input covariance matrices for the uplink large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna channels are proposed. We consider a large-scale MIMO system consisting of multiple users and one base station with several distributed antenna sets. Each link between a user and an antenna set forms a two-sided spatially correlated MIMO channel with line-of-sight (LOS) components. Our derivations are based on novel techniques from large dimensional random matrix theory (RMT) under the assumption that the numbers of antennas at the terminals approach to infinity with a fixed ratio. The deterministic equivalent results (the deterministic equivalent of ergodic sum rate and the capacity-achieving input covariance matrices) are easy to compute and shown to be accurate for realistic system dimensions. In addition, they are shown to be invariant to several types of fading distribution.

Abstract:From the perspective of statistical performance, this correspondence presents an analytical framework to study the interference coordination schemes in two-tier networks with closed-access small-cell base stations (SBSs). We assume the SBSs adopt the combination of power control, access control, and coordinated beamforming to suppress the intertier interference to the macro users (MUEs). Using stochastic geometry, we derive the expressions for the average data rate of users in different tiers. Based on the analytical results, we discuss the optimal transmission schemes of SBSs to maximize the average data rate of small-cell users while guaranteeing the performance of the MUEs. We find that access control is always a suboptimal scheme under the network model in this paper.

Abstract:Small cells are envisioned to embrace dynamic time division duplexing (TDD) in order to tailor downlink (DL)/uplink (UL) subframe resources to the quick variations and burstiness of their DL/UL traffic. In this paper, and for the first time, we perform a theoretical analysis on the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio performance of dynamic TDD transmissions in homogeneous small cell networks. The significant accuracy of the proposed theoretical analysis is corroborated by simulations. Based on our work, a partial interference cancellation scheme is proposed to reduce the outage probabilities, and it is shown that cancelling one interfering small cell on average is good enough when the traffic load is low to medium to avoid radio link failures.
A Deterministic Approach to Wireless Relay Networks

Abstract:We present a deterministic channel model which captures several key features of multiuser wireless communication. We consider a model for a wireless network with nodes connected by such deterministic channels, and present an exact characterization of the end-to-end capacity when there is a single source and a single destination and an arbitrary number of relay nodes. This result is a natural generalization of the max-flow min-cut theorem for wireline networks. Finally to demonstrate the connections between deterministic model and Gaussian model, we look at two examples: the single-relay channel and the diamond network. We show that in each of these two examples, the capacity-achieving scheme in the corresponding deterministic model naturally suggests a scheme in the Gaussian model that is within 1 bit and 2 bit respectively from cut-set upper bound, for all values of the channel gains. This is the first part of a two-part paper; the sequel [1] will focus on the proof of the max-flow min-cut theorem of a class of deterministic networks of which our model is a special case.

Abstract:Conventional non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes assume perfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter side, which is nearly impractical for many communication scenarios. Instead, this letter considers a practical downlink NOMA system in the Nakagami-m fading channels, of which the transmitter only knows the statistical CSI associated with each user. We analyze the outage performance of the proposed system and derive a closed-form formulation of each user's outage probability. Moreover, based on statistical CSI, the transmitter can optimize the system's sum throughput over power allocation for different users. The accuracy of our outage analysis and the efficacy of the proposed optimization algorithm are both confirmed by simulation results.

Abstract:The direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) cellular downlink is modeled by a constrained random spatial model involving a fixed number of base stations placed over a finite area with a minimum separation. The analysis is driven by a new closed-form expression for the conditional outage probability at each mobile, where the conditioning is with respect to the network realization. The analysis features a flexible channel model, accounting for path loss, Nakagami fading, and shadowing. By generating many random networks and applying a given resource allocation policy, the distribution of the rates provided to each user is obtained. In addition to determining the average rate, the analysis can determine the transmission capacity of the network and can characterize fairness in terms of the fraction of users that achieve a specified rate. The analysis is used to compare a rate-control policy against a power-control policy and investigate the influence of the minimum base-station separation.

Abstract:In this letter, we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of error exponents of large multiple-input multiple-output system taking into account of spatial correlation at the transmit and receive antennas. Both the random coding error exponent and expurgated error exponent are studied using the replica method and saddle point approximation. Simulation results demonstrate that the derived expressions are very accurate. Also, compared with the prior expression which involves the hypergeometric function with matrix argument, our expression is much simpler and provides significant computational advantage.
From Multi-Keyholes to Measure of Correlation and Power Imbalance in MIMO Channels: Outage Capacity Analysis

Abstract:An information-theoretic analysis of a multi-keyhole channel, which includes a number of statistically independent keyholes with possibly different correlation matrices, is given. When the number of keyholes or/and the number of Tx/Rx antennas is large, there is an equivalent Rayleigh-fading channel such that the outage capacities of both channels are asymptotically equal. In the case of a large number of antennas and for a broad class of fading distributions, the instantaneous capacity is shown to be asymptotically Gaussian in distribution, and compact, closed-form expressions for the mean and variance are given. Motivated by the asymptotic analysis, a simple, full-ordering scalar measure of spatial correlation and power imbalance in MIMO channels is introduced, which quantifies the negative impact of these two factors on the outage capacity in a simple and well-tractable way. It does not require the eigenvalue decomposition, and has the full-ordering property. The size-asymptotic results are used to prove Telatar's conjecture for semi-correlated multi-keyhole and Rayleigh channels. Since the keyhole channel model approximates well the relay channel in the amplify-and-forward mode in certain scenarios, these results also apply to the latter

Abstract:We consider the identifiability issue of maximum likelihood based activity detection in massive MIMO based grant-free random access. A prior work by Chen et al. indicates that the identifiability undergoes a phase transition for commonly-used random signatures. In this paper, we provide an analytical characterization of the boundary of the phase transition curve. Our theoretical results agree well with the numerical experiments.

Abstract:Recently, a network equivalence theory has been proposed by Koetter et al. to model the behavior of wireless and noisy wireline network components in terms of noiseless wireline models in combinatorial essence. Meanwhile the truncated deterministic model is proposed by Avestimehr et al. to approximate Gaussian relay network. In this paper, we utilize the deterministic approximation to model Multiple Access Relay Channel (MARC), gives the admissible rate regions for deterministic MARC (D-MARC) and designs simplified transmission schemes for MARC. Moreover, by allowing source cooperation, we give an algebraic formulation with non-fixed adjacency matrix to guarantee an proper code construction for DMARC and interpret the set of demands by an efficient deterministic transmission. Results in this paper can be extended to more complicated equivalent networks by seeing MARC as a component network.

Abstract:In this paper, the outage performance of an opportunistic amplify-and-forward cooperative downlink cellular system is analyzed. Different from prior works, the randomness of the network topology is taken into account by modeling the user nodes as a homogeneous Poisson point process. Based on this model, outage probability is derived and the impacts of several system parameters are investigated. Under certain conditions, the closed form expression of outage probability is derived. It is found from our results that the diversity order of this opportunistic cooperative system at high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) is one. Moreover, optimal power allocation can be found from our results to minimize the outage probability.
High-Order Analysis of Outage Probability in OFDMA Wireless Networks

Abstract:OFDMA is a potential technology that can flexibly allocate subcarriers while providing diversity gain to multiple users. In our recent work, we showed a surprising result that the maximum frequency diversity gain in OFDMA systems is equal to the number of independent subcarriers, i.e., the same as that in point-to-point OFDM systems despite of the fact that multiple users will share a common set of subcarriers. However, the diversity gain only characterizes the first-order outage performance in the high SNR regime, and the outage performance in the low SNR regime, which is very important in practice, is still an open problem. In this paper, we first formulate the subcarrier allocation problem in OFDMA systems as a random bipartite graph model. Then, a more precise outage probability is derived in the high SNR regime using a high-order analysis of the maximum matching on a random bipartite graph. An approximate outage probability in the low SNR regime is also obtained by studying the complement of a random bipartite graph. It is then demonstrated that the coefficient of the second-order term in the outage probability expression is zero except for the scenario of two users with two or three subcarriers.

Abstract:This aims to be an overview of what detailed observations of individual stars in nearby dwarf galaxies may teach us about galaxy evolution. This includes some early results from the DART (Dwarf Abundances and Radial velocity Team) Large Programme at ESO. This project has used 2.2m/WFI and VLT/FLAMES to obtain spectra of large samples of individual stars in nearby dwarf spheroidal galaxies and determine accurate abundances and kinematics. These results can be used to trace the formation and evolution of nearby galaxies from the earliest times to the present.

Abstract:A novel analytical framework for evaluating the statistics of the products of independent random variables is proposed. Compared with other methods which use either an infinite series or a special function, the new method provides simple and efficient closed-form approximations in terms of elementary functions, such as powers and exponentials, and therefore, is very easy to implement. The accuracy of the new approximation is examined. Numerical results show that it is quite accurate in most regions of interest. As an application, these new approximations are used in wireless communications theory to derive novel closed-form expressions for the outage probability of cascaded fading channels. Numerical examples show that the newly derived closed-form expressions provide insights on the behavior of important performance metrics as the outage probability, the bit error rate and the channel capacity.
Analysis of Differential Unitary Space-Time Modulation over Non-Identical MIMO Channels

Abstract:We present an analytical study on the error performance of differential unitary space-time modulation (DUSTM) over multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels with non- identical fading statistics. The channel for each transmit-receive antenna pair is assumed to be independent, non-identically distributed (i.n.i.d), and time-varying Rayleigh fading. We first show that the maximum-likelihood (ML) differential detector of DUSTM over such channels is involved except for differential cyclic group codes. Applying the distribution of quadratic forms of Gaussian vectors, we derive closed-form expressions for the exact error probabilities of two specific unitary classes, namely, cyclic group codes and orthogonal codes. Simple and useful asymptotic bounds are also obtained. Our analysis leads to several general findings.

Abstract:Small-cell networks and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems are regarded as important candidate techniques for 5G communication systems. This paper considers a heterogeneous network composed of a macrocell tier overlaid with an extremely dense tier of small-cells. In the network, the macrocell base station (BS), which applies massive MIMO, does not only serve macro user equipment units but also provides wireless backhaul for small-cell access points (APs). The wireless backhaul shares the same spectrum resource with radio access networks without creating extra spectrum resources. However, due to the densification of small-cells, the inter- and intra-tier interferences become severe. To mitigate the interferences, we use the regularized zero-forcing precoding combined with a projection technique is used at the BS in downlink (DL) to avoid interference to the APs in uplink (UL). Meanwhile, the joint linear minimum mean square error detection is applied in UL to mitigate the inter-tier interference. We derive deterministic expressions for ergodic UL and DL sum rates (SRs) by leveraging the large-dimensional random matrix theory. The expressions only depend on statistical channel information and can be used to optimize the bandwidth division between radio access links and wireless backhaul, as well as the time allocation between DL and UL operation intervals. Numerical results show that the deterministic SR equivalents are accurate and that the proposed resource allocation method can significantly improve system performance.

Abstract:The outage performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique has received intense attention in order to ensure the ultra-reliability requirement for broadcasting systems. In this article, the outage probability at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is asymptotically studied for MIMO channels to thoroughly investigate the transmission reliability. To fully capture the spatial correlation effects, the MIMO fading channel matrix is modelled according to three types of Kronecker correlation structure, i.e., independent, semi-correlated and full-correlated Rayleigh MIMO channels. The outage probabilities under all three Kronecker models are expressed as weighted sum representations of generalized Fox’s H functions. The tractable results empower the asymptotic outage analyses, which are conducted not only to reveal helpful insights into understanding the behavior of fading effects, but also to offer useful design guideline for MIMO configurations. Particularly, the asymptotic outage probability is proved to be a monotonically increasing and convex function of the transmission rate. In the absence of the channel state information (CSI), the transmitter tends to equally allocate the total transmit power among its antennas to enhance the reception reliability especially in high SNR regime. In the end, the analytical results are validated through extensive numerical experiments.
