Abstract:To keep pace with the rapidly increasing network traffic demand anticipated in the coming years, space-division multiplexing (SDM) has become a promising technology for overcoming the limitations of the current wavelength-division multiplexing based optical networks. The key advantage of SDM-based optical transmission is that it increases the network capacity by extending the available spatial dimensions. In this context, several innovative technologies have been proposed to support spatially and spectrally flexible all-optical transmission. One typical technology of this kind is called spatial and spectral super-channel (Spa & Spe SpCh) transmission. Newly designed Spa & Spe SpCh transceivers can support high-speed transmission with excellent spectral efficiency by allowing the optical carriers to be flexibly distributed in both the spatial and spectral domains without guardbands. In addition, SDM-based reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) with varying spatial switching granularities and add/drop ports have been developed to support super-channel transmission (e.g., routing and add/drop). Moreover, ROADMs with spatial lane change support, which can further improve the routing flexibility in the network layer, have also been proposed in recent years. Different modes of implementation of the aforementioned technologies have distinct advantages and disadvantages. These technologies can be combined in various ways to support different types of SDM transmission, leading to variable network performance. In this paper, we evaluate the device cost, power consumption, and network performance of SDM transmission systems based on different implementations of these technologies to serve as a reference for future research.

Abstract:CapEx minimization for space division multiplexing (SDM) networks is studied by modeling and solving the CapEx-minimized planning problem. Physical layer constraints, including the mode-binding constraint in few-mode fiber (FMF) transmission system and the inter-core crosstalk constraint in multi-core fiber (MCF) transmission system are considered. Numerical results show that SDM networks has CapEx advantage compared with conventional single-core/mode WDM networks when specific switching structures and crosstalk suppression signal processing methods are used, while this benefit is sensitive to network traffic.

Abstract:The explosive growth of internet traffic has accelerated the evolution of optical transport networks, emphasizing the need to expand transmission capacity. To overcome the limitations of conventional single-core/mode fiber-based optical transmission, spatial-division multiplexing (SDM) has been proposed. Spatial and spectral superchannel (Spa & Spe SpCh) technology in SDM-based optical networks realizes high-capacity transmission. Such an optical transmission technology can be supported by the Spa & Spe SpCh transceiver and the reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM), allocating optical carriers (OCs) in spatial and spectral domains simultaneously. The architectures of the manufactured transceivers and ROADMs installed in advance at each network node are fixed. This necessitates the determination of the appropriate spatial and spectral granularity combination that affects the transceiver and ROADM designs to efficiently utilize the switching capacity and reduce the implementation costs. In this paper, we focus on the performance analysis for the $N$ -core MCF-based network deployment issues under different granularity combinations. Detailed evaluation of a 4-core MCF-based network reveals that the device cost and network performance are influenced by spatial and spectral granularities and can provide guidance for real-world network planning and design. In particular, the trade-off between device cost and network performance based on different granularities should be taken into account in network design.

Abstract:We evaluate the advantages of using the extra dimension introduced by space-division multiplexing (SDM) for dynamic bandwidth-allocation purposes in a flexible optical network. In that respect, we aim to compare spectral and spatial super-channel (Sp-Ch) allocation policies in an SDM network based on bundles of SMFs (to eliminate coupling between spatial dimensions from the study) and to investigate the role of modulation format selection in the blocking probability performance with an emphasis on the spectral efficiency (SE)/reach tradeoff for different multiline-rate scenarios, created either by changing the number of sub-channels (Sb-Ch), or by employing different modulation formats. Our network-performance results show that DP-8QAM -in a multichannel (MC) single-modulation-format system assuming ITU-T 50-GHz WDM Sb-Ch spectrum occupation-offers the best compromise between SE and optical reach for both spectral and spatial Sp-Ch allocation policies. They also reveal that an MC multimodulation-format system improves the network performance, particularly for spectral Sp-Ch allocation with Sb-Ch spectrum occupation of 37.5 GHz on the 12.5-GHz grid. Additionally, as another important contribution of the paper, we investigate, for spatial Sp-Ch allocation, the performance of several SDM switching options: independent switching (InS), which offers highest flexibility, joint-switching (JoS), which routes all spatial modes as a single entity, and fractional-joint switching, which separates out the spatial modes into sub-sets of spatial modes which are routed independently. JoS is proved to offer a similar performance to that of InS for particular network load profiles, while allowing a significant reduction in the number of wavelength-selective switches.

Abstract:Digital signal processing (DSP) has been proved to be a successful technology recently in high speed and high spectrum-efficiency optical short-haul and access network, which enables high performances based on digital equalizations and compensations. In this paper, we investigate advanced DSP at the transmitter and receiver side for signal pre-equalization and post-equalization in an optical access network. A novel DSP-based digital and optical pre-equalization scheme has been proposed for bandwidth-limited high speed short-distance communication system, which is based on the feedback of receiver-side adaptive equalizers, such as least-mean-squares (LMS) algorithm and constant or multi-modulus algorithms (CMA, MMA). Based on this scheme, we experimentally demonstrate 400GE on a single optical carrier based on the highest ETDM 120-GBaud PDM-PAM-4 signal, using one external modulator and coherent detection. A line rate of 480-Gb/s is achieved, which enables 20% forward-error correction (FEC) overhead to keep the 400-Gb/s net information rate. The performance after fiber transmission shows large margin for both short range and metro/regional networks. We also extend the advanced DSP for short haul optical access networks by using high order QAMs. We propose and demonstrate a high speed multi-band CAP-WDM-PON system on intensity modulation, direct detection and digital equalizations. A hybrid modified cascaded MMA post-equalization schemes are used to equalize the multi-band CAP-mQAM signals. Using this scheme, we successfully demonstrates 550Gb/s high capacity WDM-PON system with 11 WDM channels, 55 sub-bands, and 10-Gb/s per user in the downstream over 40-km SMF.

Abstract:Recently, network traffic has been growing exponentially and almost reached the physical capacity limit of single mode fibers. Space division multiplexing (SDM) is a promising technology to overcome the looming fiber capacity crunch. Especially, few-mode multi-core fibers (FM-MCFs) can aggregate multiple cores into one fiber and two or more modes can be transmitted in one core, which can greatly increase the capacity yet introduce crosstalk constraints including inter- and intra-core crosstalk. To our best knowledge, there is no accurate crosstalk calculation model study in SDM optical networks with FM-MCFs. To address this issue, we first introduce the machine learning into the crosstalk prediction phase and propose a novel crosstalk estimation model (CEM) exploiting the beam propagation method called CEM-beam propagation method (BPM)-machine learning (ML), which can be used to evaluate the crosstalk during the design for the resource allocation scheme. Then, a crosstalk aware core, mode, and spectrum assignment (CA-CMSA) strategy is presented. The simulation results for crosstalk estimation at the wavelength level indicate that the crosstalk at lower frequencies is less than that at higher frequencies. Thus, the lower frequencies are always the first choice in the spectrum resource assignment phase. In addition, for our specific training set, the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm based on machine learning performs better on the training, including regression values measurement and time consumption. The simulation results of the proposed CA-CMSA scheme also show that the resource allocation algorithm based on LM can improve resource utilization without increasing total connection set-up time. Thus, it will be the best choice for the resource assignment in SDM networks with FM-MCFs.

Abstract:In recent years, to enlarge the single-mode fibers (SMFs) transmission capacity, researchers focused on the dimension of space, which is a new degree of freedom that is being considered for optical fiber communication beyond WDM. Space-division multiplexing (SDM), including mode-division multiplexing (MDM) using multimode fibers (MMFs) or few-mode fibers (FMFs), and core multiplexing using multicore fibers (MCFs), has attracted much recent attention. In an SDM system, high-density spatial channels are tightly packed into a single fiber, thus making crosstalk among cores or modes a critical challenge due to fiber imperfections, bending, and twisting. Previous studies have mostly been confined to the routing algorithms for crosstalk reduction but few focuses on the in-service crosstalk monitoring, tracing and quality-of-transmission (QoT)-oriented lightpath re-optimization. In this paper, we proposed novel in-service crosstalk monitoring and tracing (CMT) method and algorithm using fine-grained optical time slice monitoring channels for crosstalk reduction in SDM optical networks. Benefitting from the large amount of fine-grained channels provided by optical time slices, it becomes possible for every source node to allocate a dedicated monitoring time slice carrying the traffic and path information for each connection. Crosstalk monitoring and tracing can be realized by extracting the information contained in these monitoring time slices. Simulation results shows that the proposed CMT method and algorithm can obtain acceptable performance in large-scale network scenarios. Furthermore, we also proposed a quality-of-transmission (QoT)-oriented lightpath re-optimization mechanism based on in-service crosstalk monitoring and tracing to maintain a high level of QoT. Finally, we designed a prototype experiment to validate our proposed in-service crosstalk monitoring method. Results show that this method can realize in-service crosstalk monitoring, tracing and lightpath re-optimization over a seven-core fiber based transmission system, and the crosstalk with a minimum value of -37.9 dB can be monitored and successfully traced.

Abstract:In space division multiplexing (SDM) systems, the spatial dimensions can be divided into one or several group(s). Spatial dimensions in the same group can be jointly switched based on joint switching (J-Sw)/fractional joint switching (FrJ-Sw), resulting in less wavelength selective switch (WSS) usage. Additionally, optical carriers on the same frequency of these spatial dimensions in the same group can share a single laser source. Therefore, a coarser spatial (switching) granularity can reduce the usage of both WSSs and lasers. However, compared to the case of a finer spatial granularity, this scenario leads to more guard bands (GBs), i.e., more spectrum resources, being required. Consequently, spatial granularity is a key factor of minimizing the cost in SDM network design. In this paper, we present a problem called routing, modulation, spatial granularity, and spectrum assignment (RMGSA). Our objective is to minimize the network CAPEX, i.e., minimize the total cost related to the network resources containing the spectrum, WSS, and laser. We first present a joint ILP-RMGSA formulation to solve this problem. Next, we present a decomposition method that divides RMGSA into two substituent subproblems, i.e., first, routing, modulation, and spatial granularity and, second, spectrum assignment, and then solve them sequentially. Because of the limitation of ILP formulation in larger scale problem instances, a rerouting-based heuristic algorithm is proposed. We examine the performances of the proposed approaches via simulation experiments and find that the best spatial granularity is related to the network resources to which network operators attached more importance. Moreover, as another contribution of this paper, we analyze the impact of GB width and the size of the connection requests on the decision regarding the best spatial granularity.
Performance Analysis Of Scdcf-Based And Rdf-Based 40-Gb/S Otdm And Wdm Systems

Abstract:The performances of SCDCF-based and RDF-based 40Gb/s OTDM and WDM systems are compared by means of numerical simulation. Theory and numerical results were presented and discussed with 40Gb/s signal of different duty cycles. Cross-phase modulation effects in 40Gb/s WDM systems are showed for the first time. We find that in single channel transmission small duty cycle signal shows superior performance. The problem of RDF based system is mainly due to large nonlinearity of the RDF fiber we choose to calculate. The residual dispersion remains potential problem even at very excellent slope compensation in 40Gb/s systems. RDF based system offers more robust performance than SCDCF at the same value of compensation rate due to its relative short SMF fiber in every span.

Abstract:Data center interconnection with elastic optical network is a promising scenario to meet the high burstiness and high-bandwidth requirements of data center services. In our previous work, we implemented cross stratum optimization of optical network and application stratums resources that allows to accommodate data center services. In view of this, this study extends the data center resources to user side to enhance the end-to-end quality of service. We propose a novel data center service localization (DCSL) architecture based on virtual resource migration in software defined elastic data center optical network. A migration evaluation scheme (MES) is introduced for DCSL based on the proposed architecture. The DCSL can enhance the responsiveness to the dynamic end-to-end data center demands, and effectively reduce the blocking probability to globally optimize optical network and application resources. The overall feasibility and efficiency of the proposed architecture are experimentally verified on the control plane of our OpenFlow-based enhanced SDN testbed. The performance of MES scheme under heavy traffic load scenario is also quantitatively evaluated based on DCSL architecture in terms of path blocking probability, provisioning latency and resource utilization, compared with other provisioning scheme.

Abstract:Advanced modulation formats combined with digital signal processing and direct detection is a promising way to realize high capacity, low cost and power efficient short reach optical transmission system. In this paper, we present a detailed investigation on the performance of three advanced modulation formats for 100 Gb/s short reach transmission system. They are PAM-4, CAP-16 and DMT. The detailed digital signal processing required for each modulation format is presented. Comprehensive simulations are carried out to evaluate the performance of each modulation format in terms of received optical power, transmitter bandwidth, relative intensity noise and thermal noise. The performance of each modulation format is also experimentally studied. To the best of our knowledge, we report the first demonstration of a 112 Gb/s transmission over 10km of SSMF employing single band CAP-16 with EML. Finally, a comparison of computational complexity of DSP for the three formats is presented.

Abstract:Space division multiplexing enabled elastic optical networks (SDM-EONs) with multi-core fiber (MCF) have become a promising candidate for future optical transport networks, due to their high capacity and flexibility. Meanwhile, driven by the development of cloud computing and data centers, more types of requests are allowed in the networks, i.e., the usual immediate reservation (IR) requests, which need to be served immediately, and advance reservation (AR) requests, which support initial-delay tolerance services. However, with the introduction of AR requests, spectrum fragments occur frequently in both spatial and time dimension as lightpaths are set up and torn down, and the issue of spectrum fragmentation could be much more serious in SDM-EONs than in simple EONs. To measure fragments status in both spatial and time dimension in SDM-EONs, we first design a metric, i.e., time-dimensional spectrum compactness (TSC). Then, based on TSC, we propose a crosstalk-aware AR requests re-provisioning algorithm with two strategies to optimize the fragments in SDM-EONs. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated via software simulation in terms of spectrum compactness, blocking probability, spectrum utilization, average moving times, average re-provisioning latency and average start time delay. The results show that the proposed re-provisioning algorithm can effectively improve spectrum compactness and spectrum efficiency of the networks. We also evaluate the proposed re-provisioning algorithm in different TSC thresholds, and it turns out that the proposed re-provisioning algorithm in higher threshold performs better in terms of spectrum compactness and spectrum utilization.

Abstract:In this paper, we concentrate on the comparison of different switching policies, as well as their corresponding spatially-spectrally flexible super-channel transmission technologies, in static SDM-EONS. These switching policies are different due to their different spatial switching granularities and/or whether the space lane change (SLC) is supported. According to our simulation results, the switching policy with a finer switching granularity can achieve better network performance in terms of required frequency slices in the networks but meanwhile results in higher device cost. Moreover, we find that the application of SLC can only provide negligible improvements (0.1% % 3.1%) on network performance. SLC is encouraged only when the spectrum resource is highly valued by network operators compared to the additional device cost it brings. Moreover, in some previous works, the application of SLC can achieve a 7% % 14% improvement on the network throughput in dynamic network scenarios, especially when a finer spatial switching granularity is applied. Consequently, the results in this paper suggest that such an improvement is likely to be achieved by the means of network planning, such as the design of an efficient algorithm considering spectrum defragmentation, because if the re-routing/re-assignment of spectrum is allowed, the dynamic scenario can be treated as a sequence of static scenarios that change with time.

Abstract:In traditional lambda-based multigranularity optical networks, a lambda is always treated as the basic routing unit, resulting in low wavelength utilization. On the basis of optical code division multiplexing (OCDM) technology, a novel OCDM-based multigranularity optical cross-connect (MG-OXC) is proposed. Compared with the traditional lambda-based MG-OXC, its switching capability has been extended to support fiber switching, waveband switching, lambda switching, and OCDM switching. In a network composed of OCDM-based MG-OXCs, a single wavelength can be shared by distinct label switched paths (LSPs) called OCDM-LSPs, and OCDM-LSP switching can be implemented in the optical domain. To improve the network flexibility for an OCDM-LSP provisioning, two kinds of switches enabling hybrid optical code (OC) - wavelength conversion are designed. Simulation results indicate that a blocking probability reduction of 2 orders can be obtained by deploying only five OCs to a single wavelength. Furthermore, compared with time-division-multiplexing LSP (TDM-LSP), owing to the asynchronous accessibility and the OC conversion, OCDM-LSPs have been shown to permit a simpler switch architecture and achieve better blocking performance than TDM-LSPs.
