Abstract:The vigorous development of two-dimensional materials has attracted much attention in fields including physics, chemistry, materials, and energy in recent years. As an important part among the two-dimensional (2D) material family, 2D ferromagnets provide unique physical properties and potential applications. However, the similarities and differences between two-dimensional ferromagnetic materials and traditional ferromagnetic materials in terms of magnetic properties have not been studied thoroughly. To this end, combining the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and superconducting quantum interference vibrating sample magnometer (SQUID VSM), we systematically study the changes in the internal magnetic order of the 2D van der Waals crystal Cr2Ge2Te6 (CGT). As the temperature rising to Curie Temperature (TC), the in-plane and out-of-plane resonance fields of CGT gradually merge into a same field, indicating the changes of anisotropic. The amplitude of ferromagnetic resonance shows a peak when the temperature is below TC, which may be due to the competition between damping progress and magnetization degradation during the heating process. This work paves the way for a better understanding of the mechanism of two-dimensional ferromagnetism.

Abstract:CrGeTe is an intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductor with van der Waals type layered structure, thus represents a promising material for novel electronic and spintronic devices. Here we combine scanning tunneling microscopy and first-principles calculations to investigate the electronic structure of CrGeTe. Tunneling spectroscopy reveals a surprising large energy level shift and change of energy gap size across the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition, as well as a peculiar double-peak electronic state on the Cr-site defect. These features can be quantitatively explained by density functional theory calculations, which uncover a close relationship between the electronic structure and magnetic order. These findings shed important new lights on the microscopic electronic structure and origin of magnetic order in CrGeTe.

The calculated critical parameters are not only intrinsic and self-consistent, but also obey the scaling equation around TC. Further analysis using renormalization theory reveals that the spin interaction for Cr5Te6 is long-range type, and its magnetic interaction cannot be classified into an universal class, the spin exchange interaction distance decays as J(r) ≈ r−4.79.

Abstract:Developing a comprehensive magnetic theory of correlated itinerant magnets is a challenging task due to the difficulty in reconciling both local moments and itinerant electrons. In this work, we investigate the microscopic process of magnetic phase transition in ferromagnet metal Fe$_{3-\delta}$GeTe$_2$. A new paradigm is proposed to describe the magnetic phase transition in correlated metallic ferromagnets, where Hund's coupling dominates the spectral weight transfer between different spin channels, rather than spin-splitting as described by the Stoner model. We recognize that our theory should be universal for itinerant magnets. Additionally, we reveal an efficient way to achieve novel quantum states from various competing orders in multi-site crystal structures. Our research shows that Fe1 are proximate to Mott physics, while Fe2 exhibit Hund physics due to their distinct atomic environments. These competing orders work together to produce heavy fermion behavior within ferromagnetic long-range order through well-defined quasiparticle bands, which are promoted by Hund's coupling and further hybridized with relative itinerant bands. The complex interactions of competing orders drive correlated magnetic metal to a new frontier for discovering outstanding quantum states and exotic phenomena in condensed matter physics.

Abstract:Intrinsic magnetic semiconductors hold great interest in the fields of fundamental magnetization and spintronics. One such semiconductor is Cr2Si2Ti6 (CST), a quasi two-dimensional (2D) magnetic semiconductor with potential applications in future magnetic devices. Whereas, the origin of ferromagnetism in CST remains a mystery. To investigate this, ac/dc susceptibility and electronic spin resonance (ESR) measurements were conducted. Based on ac susceptibility scaling, the critical temperature (TC) for the ferromagnetic (FM) to paramagnetic (PM) phase transition was found to be ~ 32.5 K, with critical exponent δ = 6.7 from the critical isotherm, β + γ = 1.72 from the temperature dependence of the crossover line, and γ = 1.43 from the temperature dependence of the susceptibility along the same line. All critical exponents were found to be consistent with the dc magnetization scaling method. However, above and below TC, the origin of magnetism cannot be explained by a single theory. To explore the origin of abnormal magnetic critical behavior, ESR measurements were performed. Below T* ~ 130 K, the ESR measurements revealed that the resonance field width (ΔH) tends to increase and decrease for the applied magnetic field H parallel and perpendicular to the c axis, respectively, indicating the onset of magnetic interaction even in the PM state. Meanwhile, the deviation from Curie-Weiss behavior below T* also confirmed the occurrence of magnetic correlation above the TC in CST. These observations suggest that the competition and cooperation among the direct and indirect interactions, the structural distortion and the van der Walls interaction at high temperature should be considered to investigate the origin of anomalous magnetism in CST. The present results provide valuable insights into the nature of ferromagnetism in 2D magnetic semiconductor.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetism is an incredibly intriguing phenomenon in condensed matter physics. The exploration of 2D magnets holds great promise for various applications, even though they often exhibit low magnetic transition temperature. Among these materials, Fe5GeTe2 has emerged as a compelling candidate for room-temperature spintronics due to its intrinsic ferromagnetism and high Curie temperature. In this study, we investigate the impact of Co substitution at the Fe sites in Fe5GeTe2, which induces a transition of the magnetic ground state to the antiferromagnetic state when the substitution level exceeds 0.36. Additionally, we observe the coexistence of ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic states in the magnetic transition region of (Fe1−xCox)5GeTe2 crystals. Notably, the interaction between the two magnetic phases results in Néel temperature (TN) up to 374 K, establishing a record among known van der Waals antiferromagnets. Our findings present a strategy for enhancing the magnetic temperature of 2D magnets, paving the way for potential advancements in spintronics applications.

Abstract:CrGeTe3 recently emerges as a new two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic semiconductor that is promising for spintronic device applications. Unlike CrSiTe3 whose magnetism can be understood using the 2D-Ising model, CrGeTe3 exhibits a smaller van der Waals gap and larger cleavage energy, which could lead to a transition of magnetic mechanism from 2D to 3D. To confirm this speculation, we investigate the critical behavior of CrGeTe3 around the second-order paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition. We obtain the critical exponents estimated by several common experimental techniques including the modified Arrott plot, Kouvel-Fishermethod, and critical isotherm analysis, which show that themagnetism of CrGeTe3 follows the tricritical mean-field model with the critical exponents beta,gamma and delta of 0.240 +/- 0.006, 1.000 +/- 0.005, and 5.070 +/- 0.006, respectively, at the Curie temperature of 67.9 K. We therefore suggest that the magnetic phase transition from 2D to 3D for CrGeTe3 should locate near a tricritical point. Our experiment provides a direct demonstration of the applicability of the tricritical mean-field model to a 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor.

Abstract:We have investigated the critical behavior of Fe2.85GeTe2 single crystals near the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition by bulk dc magnetization measurements. The critical exponents β, γ and δ, obtained from modified Arrott plot, Kouvel-Fisher method, and critical isothermal magnetization analysis, could fulfill the Widom scaling law. The self-consistency and reliability of these exponents are further verified by the magnetic state equations below and above the Curie temperature at high magnetic field. In addition, the exchange distance deduced from the susceptibility exponent is shown to decay as [Formula: see text]. Based on the observations, we suggest that the competition between direct magnetic exchange and Coulombic and/or RKKY interactions should be responsible for the intrinsic magnetism in this system.

Abstract:The self-intercalation of Cr into pristine two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals ferromagnetic CrTe2, which forms chromium tellurides (CrxTe2), has garnered interest due to their remarkable magnetic characteristics and the wide variety of chemical compositions available. Here, comprehensive basic characterization and magnetic studies are conducted on quasi-2D ferromagnetic Cr1.04Te2 crystals. Measurements of the isothermal magnetization curves are conducted around the critical temperature to systematically investigate the critical behavior. Specifically, the critical exponents beta = 0.2399, gamma = 0.859, and delta = 4.3498, as well as the Curie temperature TC = 249.56 K, are determined using various methods, including the modified Arrott plots, the Kouvel-Fisher method, the Widom scaling method, and the critical isotherm analysis. These results indicate that the tricritical mean-field model accurately represents the critical behavior of Cr1.04Te2. A magnetic phase diagram with tricritical phenomenon is thus constructed. Further investigations confirm that the critical exponents obtained conform to the scalar equation near TC, indicating their self-consistency and reliability. Our work sheds light on the magnetic properties of quasi-2D Cr1.04Te2, broadening the scope of the van der Waals crystals for developments of future spintronic devices operable at room temperature.

Abstract:The interplay of symmetry-breaking ordered states, such as superconductivity, charge density waves, magnetism, and pseudogaps, is a fundamental issue in correlated systems. Periodic modulation and antiferromagnetism often coexist in the proximity of phase diagram region in high-Tc superconductors. It is also worth noting that different order states appear in a situation on comparable temperature scales, so these orders are intertwined and competing on the same footing. The magnetism of vdW material Fe5−xGeTe2, with one of the highest reported bulk Curie temperatures, is found to be sensitive to thermal history and external magnetic field. However, the temperature-dependent magnetization with two characteristic points still lacks a unified picture to describe it. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, magnetic property measurements, and first-principles calculations, the complex yet intriguing magnetic behaviors are gradually unveiled. A competition mechanism between charge order and ferromagnetism is proposed and firmly observed by experimental measurements. As the ferromagnetic order strengthens at low temperature, the charge order will be suppressed. Exchange splitting in itinerant ferromagnetism plays a significant role in the temperature evolution of band structure and causes a Lifshitz transition, which provides more control means to realize novel devices at room temperature.

Abstract:The recent discovery of intrinsic ferromagnetic order in the atomically thin van der Waals crystal CrXTe3 (X = Si, Ge) stimulates intensive studies on the nature of low-dimensional magnetism because the presence of long-range magnetic order in two-dimensional systems with continuous symmetry is strictly prohibited by thermal fluctuations. By combining advanced many-body calculations with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we investigate CrSiTe3 single crystals and unveil the pivotal role played by the strong electronic correlations at both high- and low-temperature regimes. Above the Curie temperature (T-c), Coulomb repulsion (U) drives the system into a charge transfer insulating phase. In contrast, below T-c the crystal field arranges the Cr-3d orbitals such that the ferromagnetic superexchange profits, giving rise to the bulk ferromagnetic ground state with which the electronic correlations compete. The excellent agreement between theory and experiment establishes CrSiTe3 as a prototype low-dimensional crystal with the cooperation and interplay of electronic correlation and ferromagnetism.
The Magnetoresistance Studies of Van Der Waals CrTe2 Flakes

Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnets have garnered significant attention in spintronics due to their unique properties. Among them, CrTe2 flakes stand out because of their intrinsic in-plane magnetization and Curie temperature above room temperature. Despite these intriguing magnetic properties, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In this paper, we meticulously investigate the magnetoresistance (MR) response of CrTe2 flakes to variations in magnetic field and temperature. Below 40 K, CrTe(2 )exhibits positive MR correlated with carrier density, including a distinctive linear non-saturating MR at 3 K. Above 40 K, the suppression of electron-magnon scattering leads to linear negative MR, which is a characteristic feature of ferromagnetic materials. As the temperature approaches 240 K, thermal excitations gradually increase, and scattering from fluctuating local moments begins to play a significant role, resulting in the nonlinear MR phenomenon. Magnetic anisotropy contributes to anisotropic MR across different current and magnetic field orientations. In low magnetic fields where the magnetic moment is unsaturated, we combined the localized magnetic moment and two-band models to explain the MR behavior, achieving good fitting results. These findings significantly enhance the understanding of CrTe2's ferromagnetic properties and magnetic transport behavior, laying a foundation for its future development and practical applications in spintronics.

Abstract:Materials hosting intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetism have significant application in spintronics. In this context, the transition metal sulfide chromium telluride (CrxTey) has sparked significant attention due to its room-temperature ferromagnetism, as well as high magnetic anisotropy, easy tunability, and air stability. This study carefully examines the magnetic characteristics of an intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetic Cr3Te4 single crystal. Magnetization measurements identify a paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic (PM-FM) phase transition at TC similar to 322 K and high magnetic anisotropy. Meanwhile, a coexistence of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism is unveiled below TN similar to 90 K. A systematic investigation of magnetization isotherms collected near T-C provides the asymptotic critical exponents /3 = 0.365(5), gamma = 1.212(9), 8 = 4.580(4) for H//ab, and /3 = 0.370(3), gamma = 1.329(1), delta = 4.554(9) for H//c. The obtained critical exponents for H//ab and H//c suggest strong anisotropic and multiple magnetic interactions in Cr3Te4. The comprehensive H -T phase diagrams for H//ab and H//c are constructed using universal scaling and detailed magnetization, revealing strong field-dependent anisotropic room-temperature ferromagnetism and coexistence of ferromagnetism, antiferromagnetism, and noncollinear ferromagnetism. The multiple phases demonstrate that the magnetic couplings in Cr3Te4 are mediated by intralayer super exchange, interlayer double exchange, and direct exchange.

Abstract:Fe3GeTe2 (FGT) is one of the most attractive two-dimensional (2D) magnetic metals owing to the long-range ferromagnetic order and high Curie temperature. The electronic transition is of great importance for understanding the magnetic physics and spintronic applications in FGT. Although the ferromagnetic properties of FGT are well known, the band structure and electronic transition in both theory and experiment have been rarely studied. Here, we use density functional theory (DFT) and the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) technique to study the electronic transition and phase transition of magnetic FGT. The electronic transitions at energy of 1.6 and 2.2 eV were observed through the reflection spectrum, which are further evidenced by first-principles calculations. At the critical temperature (170 K) where the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition happens, the interband electronic transition at 2.2 eV vanishes due to the disappearance of flat bands between the Gamma-M point. Besides, a step appears in the hysteresis loop at the magnetic field of +/- 0.07 T where both the MCD and reflection spectrum also undergo an obvious change. This work has correlated the phase transition with electronic transition, offering a new degree of freedom to study the magnetic physics of ferromagnetic metals.

Abstract:Significant microscopic information about fundamental magnetic interactions of magnetic materials is probed via the critical behavior of paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition. In this work, we demonstrate that the critical behavior of cubic single crystalline FeGe belongs to the isotropic 3D-Heisenberg universality class by measuring the field dependence of magnetic entropy change. The above transition is one of the magnetic field-driven phase transitions but has a feature of the crossover from first- to second-order phase transition. A phenomenological model based on the evolution of magnetic skyrmions was proposed to qualitatively understand the phase transition.

Abstract:The crystallographic and magnetic properties are presented for van der Waals ferromagnetic CrXTe3 (X = Si, Ge) single crystals. Both the results of DC and AC magnetic measurements have been analyzed. The zero field cooling and field cooling curves show obvious divergence at low temperatures in low applied magnetic field, which originates from the anisotropy of CrXTe3 (X = Si, Ge) single crystals. Moreover, a second-stage magnetic transition is observed just below the paramagetic-ferroamgnetic Curie temperature T-c, indicating the existence of a two-step magnetic ordering in the system. Thermal-activated Escape of the Bistable Magnetic States in 2D Fe3GeTe2 Near the Critical Point

Abstract:Great effort has been made recently to investigate the phase transitions in two-dimensional (2D) magnets while leaving subtle quantification unsolved. Here, we demonstrate the thermal-activated escape in 2D Fe 3 GeTe 2 ferromagnets near the critical point with a quantum magnetometry based on nitrogen-vacancy centers. We observe random switching between the two spin states with auto-correlation time described by the Arrhenius law, where a change of temperature by 0.8 K induces a change of lifetime by three orders of magnitude. Moreover, a large energy difference between the two spin states about 51.3 meV is achieved by a weak out-of-plane magnetic field of 1 G, yielding occupation probability described by Boltzmann’s law. Using these data, we identify all the parameters in the Ginzburg-Landau model. This work provides quantitative description of the phase transition in 2D magnets, which paves the way for investigating the critical fluctuation and even non-equilibrium phase transitions in these 2D materials.
