Abstract:Optimal design of the crossbeam is essential for the economical design of bridge towers as the crossbeam could considerably enhance the lateral stiffnesses of these towers by providing a special bracing for the tower columns. By using a reliability-based approach, this paper studies the optimal design of the crossbeam stiffness factor in bridge towers; this is defined as a dimensionless crossbeam stiffness relative to the tower column stiffness. A novel second-order matrix stiffness method (MSM) is applied to obtain a closed-form solution of the lateral stiffness of the bridge tower. The structural second-order stiffness matrix consists of combinations of the second-order element stiffness matrices and coordinate transformations. Subsequently, a reliability analysis to study the optimal design of the bridge tower is performed by considering the uncertainties arising from the design and construction of the bridge tower. The lateral stiffness of the bridge tower is set as an objective function while the total usage of materials is set as a constraint condition. Then, the influence of the crossbeam stiffness factor on the lateral stiffness of the bridge tower, including the fragility curve and the probabilistic behavior, is examined. Based on the reliability analysis, optimal design recommendations on the crossbeam stiffness of the bridge tower are presented.

Abstract:As one of the most common failure types of arch bridges, stability is one of the critical aspects for the design of arch bridges. Using 3D finite element model in ABAQUS, this paper has studied the stability performance of an arch bridge with inclined arch ribs and hangers, and the analysis also took the effects of geometrical and material nonlinearity into account. The impact of local buckling and residual stress of steel plates on global stability and the applicability of fiber model in stability analysis for steel arch bridges were also investigated. The results demonstrate an excellent stability of the arch bridge because of the transverse constraint provided by transversely-inclined hangers. The distortion of cross section, local buckling and residual stress of ribs has an insignificant effect on the stability of the structure, and the accurate ultimate strength may be obtained from a fiber model analysis. This study also shows that the yielding of the arch ribs has a significant impact on the ultimate capacity of the structure, and the bearing capacity may also be approximately estimated by the initial yield strength of the arch rib.

Abstract:This paper presents model test and numerical finite element analysis (FEA) on mechanical behavior of a typical composite bridge. The model test with scale of 1:30 of the composite bridge was conduct to fully understand the safety and serviceability. In the experiment, stress distribution, deflection resistance ability, dynamic property, and distortion effect of the Bridge’s main control cross-section were carefully measured to investigate the mechanical performance and interaction between main bridge and ramp system. On the basis of the experimental results of the typical composite mode bridge, the model bridges were modeled as three-dimensional structures using commercially available software. The results of the finite element analysis are in good agreement with those of the tests in terms of strength and stiffness. The parameters considered herein were the bearing condition, longitudinal slope of ramp, ramp curved radii, and bifurcate diaphragm plate stiffness. It was also expected that the results presented in this paper would be useful as references for the further research and the design of the typical composite bridges.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the design of bracing systems for three-ribbed parabolic arch bridges against out-ofplane buckling. Typical bracing systems for the three-ribbed arch bridges include K-bracing system and X-bracing system as well as transverse bracing system. The buckling criterion of the braced funicular three-ribbed arch bridge is derived from an exact matrix stiffness method (MSM) with a 14 x 14 s-order element stiffness matrix of three-dimensional beam-column elements that allows for torsional and warping deformations. The lateral torsional buckling load and mode are given by the lowest eigenvalue and eigenvector associated with the assembled structural stability stiffness matrix. A comparison study between different bracing system configurations suggests that the three-ribbed arches with the integral K- or X-bracing system (a K/X-bracing across the three arch ribs) have lower lateral torsional buckling loads than their arch counterparts with the independent Kor X-bracing system (the adjacent arch ribs are connected by K/X-bracing respectively), because the latter ones could provide more restraint on the middle arch rib to avoid early lateral torsional instability. Further, a bracing utilization efficiency index (defined as the normalized buckling capacity over material usage for bracing system) is proposed to quantify the effect of bracing systems in improving the lateral torsional buckling capacity of arch bridges. Highly efficient bracing systems that maximize the lateral torsional buckling load of three-ribbed arch structures with the lowest bracing material usage are then recommended.

Abstract:The longitudinal bracing systems in industrial buildings maintain the stability of the longitudinal frame and reduce the effective length of columns.In this paper,the stiffness and capacity requirements of the two-story bracing systems to maintain the stability of the longitudinal columns are investigated.The stiffness requirements of different cases are derived from the ideal elastic model.With the most unfavorable initial imperfections considered,the capacity requirements of the bracings that reduce the effective length factor of the columns to half are suggested for practical application.

Abstract:Twin arch bridges are often designed with a bracing member system that can significantly enhance the out-ofplane stability. This study presents an exact matrix stiffness method (MSM) for the out-of-plane buckling analysis of funicular twin arch bridges and investigates the optimal bracing system design. A novel 14 x 14 s-order element stiffness matrix of three-dimensional beam-columns was used in the MSM and the out-of-plane buckling analysis was performed after assembling the exact global structural stability stiffness matrix. The influences of the bracing location, number, length, and flexural rigidity of both the transverse bracing and X-bracing systems on the buckling capacity of the twin arch system were investigated. The in-plane stiffness of the bracing system (i.e., the horizontal flexural rigidity in a transverse bracing system) was found to be the critical factor in suppressing the out-of-plane buckling of the twin arch system. In addition, the twin arch system achieved the maximum out-of-plane buckling capacity with the bracing location at S/4, where S is the total arc length. For optimal bracing system design of funicular twin arches, it is recommended that one uses the more economical Xbracing system or a transverse bracing system with adequately rigid bracing members.

Abstract:Integral model of some workshop was analyzed by ANSYS software which has horizontal knees at ends of crane beams.Finite element simulation was done to analyze portal frame with single span double slopes and one with double spans four slopes.At the same time,displacements and the largest stress of rigid frame column were compared when crane lateral braking forces were loaded symmetrically and asymmetrically.The results show that the twisting deformation of rigid frame column is smaller when the horizontal load is asymmetrical,but the out-of-plane moment is induced and the stress due to this out-of-plane moment is about 8MPa.In practical column design,the stress ratio at this cross-section should be controlled.

Abstract:Taking the calculation model of a concrete-filled steel tube(CFST)truss arch bridge with a main span 308 m as an example,this paper makes a study of the in-plane stability performance of such type of the structure and the influence of sectional design on the stability,using the calculation method that takes into account of dual nonlinearity influences.The results of the study indicate that the strength of the Category I Stability and the Category II Stability that only considers the geometric nonlinearity influence is far greater than that of the calculations that consider the dual nonlinearity influences.The changing of steel and concrete grades does not contribute much to the enhancement of the in-plane ultimate strength of the truss arch bridge,however,the steel ratio in the section is an important parameter that will have influence on the ultimate bearing capacity.

Abstract:The idea can meet with the bridge aesthetics better that is to install the longitudinal linkage between 2 special-shaped arches.Through the project calculation of Jigeng Bridge in Nantong,the structure internal force of arch rib was changed greatly,especially the shearing force of the contiguous arch rib sections was strengthened evidently after installing the longitudinal linkage.Meanwhile,the external stability of the whole arch rib was lowered but the total rigidity of the whole bridge and natural frequencies were improved.The results showed that the idea should be adopted in the practical design of special-shaped arch bridge.

Abstract:The study aims to further standardize the construction process, improve the construction quality, and ensure the stability of infrastructure construction. The continuous rigid-frame bridge is taken as the research object, the finite element model of the bridge body is established by using the beam element, and the overall stability of the rigid-frame bridge is analyzed in the construction and completion stages. Moreover, the stability coefficient and buckling mode are established under different working conditions in each stage, the linear stability variation law is summarized, and the geometric nonlinear stability analysis method is established through the specific data. The nonlinear stability safety factor and buckling mode are obtained, and the influence of wind load and initial defects on the stability of continuous rigid-frame bridge is further explored. The results show that with the increase of the bridge height, the overall stability factor of the bridge is decreasing, and the safety factor of the single-limb thin-walled hollow pier is relatively larger than that of the double-limb thin-walled hollow pier. During the construction, the asymmetric self-weight load caused by the asynchronous load and cantilever pouring has the greatest impact on the stability of the bridge. The stability safety factor of the geometric nonlinear stability analysis method constructed is 0.3% and 1.27% lower than the ideal state, respectively. The stability safety factor of the wind load and the initial defect is 12.65% lower than the ideal state, and the stability safety factor is greatly reduced. The results have important reference significance to ensure the construction safety and overall stability of the bridge.

Abstract:A three-dimensional finite element model was established for a large span concrete filled steel tubular (CFST) arch bridge which is currently under construction. The arch rib, the spandrel columns, the prestressed concrete box-beam, the cast-in-situ concrete plate of bridge deck, the steel box-beam and the crossbeams connecting the two pieces of arch ribs, were modeled by three-dimensional Timoshenko beam elements (3DTBE). The suspenders were modeled by three-dimensional cable elements (3DCE). Both geometric nonlinearity and prestress effect could be included in each kind of element. At the same time a second finite element model with the same geometric and material properties excepted for the sectional dimension of arch rib was set up. Static dynamic analyses were performed to determine the corresponding characteristics of the structure. The results showed that the arch rib's axial rigidity could be determined by static analysis. The stability and vibration of this system could be separated into in-plane modes, out-of-plane modes and coupled modes. The in-plane stability and dynamic characteristics are determined by the arch rib's vertical stiffness and that of out-of-plane is determined by the crossbeams' stiffness and arch rib's lateral stiffness mainly. The in-plane stiffness is much greater than that of out-of-plane for this kind of bridge . The effect of geometric nonlinearity and prestress effect on bridge behavior is insignificant.

Abstract:Non-symmetric cross-bracing system is a common structure in transmission towers.It could be simplified as a beam with an intermediate elastic support.The corresponding exact solution of buckling was obtained, which was suitable for various boundary conditions.The simplified system became a continuous beam when the stiffness of the elastic support was infinite.The corresponding characteristic equation of buckling was also presented.An exact formulation was derived to calculate the lateral stiffness of axial-loaded beam.The numerical analysis of buckling of non-symmetric cross-bracing systems was then conducted.The results obtained from empirical equation agreed well with theoretical results.The results showed that both tension bracing members and compression bracing members could be described by the same equation.

Abstract:Steel structure climbing formwork has been widely used in bridge pier and bridge tower, etc. But the design of 30 degrees slope climbing formwork design is rarely involved. The climbing formwork which in the upper surface of leaning bridge tower is affected by concrete buoyancy and the downside is affected by concrete gravity .That cause insufficient stiffness,deformation of the template,non-uniform cross-section of the bridge and large angle deviation which have great harm to the bridge quality .This paper which combined the construction project of Huaibei Xiangwang Bridge establish the mode of climbing formwork, then, import the mode to the Workbench14.5 proceeding simulation analysis. Getting the stress and deformation of the climbing formwork, check the strength and stiffness .Then optimize the structure of climbing formwork to ensure the stiffness and control the deformation of the template. The stress of downside climbing formwork after optimization is uniform and maximum stress is reduced about 30% .This paper provide a reference to the design of the climbing formwork used in the large angle leaning bridge tower.
Optimization of Mechanical Behavior of Steel and Concrete Continuous Composite Truss Girder Bridge

Abstract:To effectively improve the mechanical behavior of the hogging moment area of the steel and concrete continuous composite truss girder bridge,the Jizhao Bridge over Haihe Rive in Tianjin was cited as an example.The major design difficulties of the composite truss girder bridge were summarized and the conventional solutions to the difficulties were commented.Based on the summarization and comments,three measures of the partial composite technique,double composite techniques and optimized construction sequences were proposed for the optimal design of the Jizhao Bridge.The software MIDAS Civil was used to set up the finite element model for a side composite truss of the bridge,the whole construction process of the bridge was analyzed and the effectiveness of the three measures was checked.The results of comparative analysis reveal that the application of the three measures can keep the concrete deck slabs in compression all the time under the short-term combination of load effect and can make the maximum compressive stress in the steel plates of the lower chord reduced by about 25% as compared to the design scheme that the concrete is not cast.It is known herewith that the rational application of the measures can significantly reduce the tensile stress in the deck slabs and the compressive stress in the steel plates of the lower chord in the hogging moment area of the bridge,therefore can effectively avoid cracking in the slabs and improve the stability of the lower chord.

Abstract:Advances in Structural Engineering, Ahead of Print. An analytical model for predicting the deformation and internal forces of multitower suspension bridges is proposed in this paper. Equilibrium differential equations and deformation coordination equations are established based on deflection theory and coupling analysis of bridge components, in which the vertical stiffness contribution of girders and the longitudinal stiffness of all towers are considered. The equations for the deformation and internal forces of the bridge components, including towers, hangers, cables, and girders, are derived taking into account the live loads to which the multitower suspension bridge is subjected. The equations capture the mechanical characteristics of the bridge components, and the results can be obtained explicitly with the proposed model, notably improving the calculation efficiency. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed model are verified by two finite element model examples featuring two and three towers. A parametric analysis is performed to investigate the impact of major bridge parameters using the proposed model. The analysis results indicate that the longitudinal stiffness ratio of the mid-tower to the main cable plays an important role in the key design indices, including girder deflection and safety factor of anti-slipping of the saddle. A suitable stiffness range for the mid-tower is obtained by the proposed model.

Abstract:Achieving full equilibrium for the horizontal component force of the backstay in cable-stayed arch bridges is challenging, and the stiffness of the buckle tower has a notable influence on the overall shape of the main arch structure. Increased stiffness in the buckle tower leads to reduced construction complexity. Therefore, this study proposed a method of enhancing the longitudinal thrust stiffness of the buckle tower using the joint effect of approach bridges. A sensitivity analysis was conducted on the approach bridge–composite buckle tower structure to determine the optimal combination method, resulting in the formulation of an analytical expression for the thrust stiffness of this structure. In this study, numerical analysis was performed to explore the composition mechanism of the thrust stiffness influenced by the pier–girder connection, and we discussed the applicability of the joint effect of approach bridges during the cantilever assembly process of arch ribs. The following conclusions were obtained: 1) prior to installing the main girder of the approach bridge, when the steel buckle tower and the junction pier have already been secured, the most effective approach is to form a “T” rigid structure by firmly connecting the main girder of the approach bridge with the composite buckle tower. This configuration provides self-weight deflection and pier–girder rotation restriction effects. 2) The study presents analytical formulas for the completely rigid pier–girder connection of the approach bridge–composite buckle tower structure, partially rigid pier–girder connection, and pre-deviation. Combined with the calculation program, this can guide structural design. 3) When a large downward elevation error of the arch ribs occurs in the middle and later stages, the cable force needed to install new arch segments becomes overly large. Therefore, the joint effect of approach bridges can be utilized to substitute for a portion of the cable force, effectively reducing potential elevation errors that might arise in subsequent arch ribs in the absence of this joint effect.

Analytical Solution for Longitudinal Anti-Push Stiffness of the Middle Tower of Cross-Cable Multi-Tower Cable-Stayed Bridge

Abstract:The Queensferry Crossing in Scotland is the first multi-tower cable-stayed bridge with crossed cables in the world. This means that the conceptual design of a cross-cable multi-tower cable-stayed bridge has become a reality. In this paper, the cross-cable action mechanism is studied deeply. Suppose that the small displacement amount at the top of the side tower is ignored. The deformation coordination principle is used twice to analyze the relationship between the horizontal external force and the top displacement amount of the middle tower. Thus, derive the formula for estimating the anti-push stiffness of cross cables to the middle tower of the multi-tower cable-stayed bridge under the influence of the stiffness of the tower and beam. A numerical example is given to verify this. The research results show that the error between the analytical solution and the finite element solution is less than 8%, which meets the conceptual design requirements of cross-cable multi-tower cable-stayed bridges. The cross cables can reduce the deflection of the main beam and improve the stiffness of the bridge. After setting 10 pairs of cross cables, the displacement amount of the middle tower decreases by as high as 51%. The stiffness of the multi-tower cable-stayed bridge increases with an increase in the number of cross cables, but the increasing trend of stiffness gradually slows down. Increasing the stiffness of the tower or beam can improve the structural stiffness to a certain extent, but the effect is much less potent than that of the cross cable in the middle span.

Abstract:Tianjin Haihe Bengbu Bridge is built in CBD of Tianjin city and crosses the Haihe River;it is dissymmetrical steel bridge of three dimensions Beam-Arch Combination System.The bridge is complex for both mechanical and tectonic consideration.The bracing member of abutment 1st and 6th are designed specially,which connect the main girder of the bridge and the rubber bearing of abutment.These buttress braces are designed uniquely in the world,in order to transfer large-tonnage axial load,including compressive force and tensile force,to bearings.The loading behavior of them are significant effect to the security of the bridge and need to be analyzed specially,so a 1:2.5-scale model is made,destructive experiment of experimental member is done.Experiment member is elastic based on experimental data at tension load;limit axis load is 3002kN when the member is buckling.Except model experiment,a finite element analysis of model is also essential.Through experiment and finite element analysis,the reliability and safety of the bearings are verified.
Study On Optimal Construction Method For Lower Beam Of Cable-Stayed Bridge Towers

Abstract:With the development of the span lengths of cable-stayed bridges, there are more and more difficulties in the construction of tower. A new layer method of three-time pouring and three-time tension construction for the lower beam of long-span cable-stayed bridge tower is presented. The spatial finite element model considering the creep and shrinkage effects is established and applied to some engineering examples. And it is found that the residual stress near the seams due to the increase of the number of layered pouring can be reduced by adopting equitable construction program and rational tensioning force in order to avoid structural cracks. In order to ensure the safety of construction, mechanical and stability analysis are carried out and theoretical calculation results are compared with testing results.
