Abstract:Optical materials and devices designed based on traditional materials tend to be monofunctional and cannot be dynamically changed according to application requirements. In recent years, the extensive research on vanadium dioxide as the phase change material has revealed its unique optical properties and phase transition characteristics, enabling the flexible regulation of electromagnetic waves. This paper reviews the energy band structure and the phase transition mechanism, simulates the optical and electrical properties of vanadium dioxide, and demonstrates the modulation by three excitation modes, namely thermal, electrical, and optical. The application of vanadium dioxide in metamaterials is also presented, including the unique chiral metamaterials based on the rotational properties, the resonators based on tunable optical properties, and the absorber with variable absorption range. We have further summarized the applications of vanadium dioxide on metasurfaces. The utilization of phase transition enables thermally controlled devices to modulate the thermal radiation of light waves. Additionally, metasurface devices can alter the properties of electromagnetic waves, such as polarization, phase, and polarization state. Furthermore, the precise manipulation of localized electromagnetic waves can be achieved through digital coding. By summarizing the advancements in research on metasurfaces and metamaterials, we expected that vanadium dioxide would be promoted for the development of new dynamically tunable optoelectronic devices.
