Abstract:Low-temperature selective catalytic reduction with NH3 (LT-SCR) is a promising approach for NOx remediation. This work utilized bimetallic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to prepare CeMOx (M=Ti, Cu) catalysts allowing the homogeneous distribution of promoters to investigate LT-SCR explicitly. The strong interfacial interaction between nanoscale-mixed components was characterized on CeTiOx by HRTEM, micro-Raman, and XPS, resulting in high acidity and good redox properties with abundant Ce3+ and Ti4+. It obtained over 80% conversion from 180 degrees C to 300 degrees C with 100% N2 selectivity, and maintained stable performance in SO2/H2O at a high GHSV of 150,000 h-1. In situ DRIFTS reveals that NH3 adsorption was promoted on CeTiOx, which accelerated reaction between NOx and adsorbed NH3 via Eley-Rideal mechanism. Meanwhile, the aliovalent substitution of ceria by Cu2+ was observed on CeCuOx, forming oxygen vacancies. Its high redox properties enhanced NOx conversion by Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism, but triggered NH3 peroxidation, leading to poor N2 selectivity.

Abstract:Background Due to excellent oxygen storage capacity and redox ability, Ce-based catalysts are usually considered as one of the promising candidates of traditional V-based catalysts for NH3-SCR of NO. However, surface acidity of Ce-based catalysts is often insufficient which restrains their SCR performance to some extent. Methods Herein, ZrO2-supported CeO2 catalysts were prepared by precipitation and wet impregnation methods. Aiming to promote catalyst surface acidity, a novel method was proposed to pre-treat ZrO2 support with various acids (HCl, HNO3, H3PO4 and H2SO4) via impregnation process. and the effects of acid treatment on SCR performance of CeO2/ZrO2 catalysts had been investigated. Significant findings It was worthy to note that H2SO4-treated CeO2/ZrO2 catalyst exhibited a superior NO removal efficiency which was higher than 94% in a wide temperature range of 248–500 °C. NH3-TPD results revealed that the surface acidities acidity of CeO2/ZrO2 catalysts had been obviously enhanced after acid treatment with HNO3, H3PO4 and H2SO4, except for HCl. According to in-situ DRIFRS results, one could infer that SCR reactions occurred over CeO2/ZrO2 catalyst without acid treatment might proceed only in E-R mechanism. But for acid-treated CeO2/ZrO2 catalysts, both E-R and L-H mechanisms were might be followed in SCR reaction process.

Abstract:CeO2-based catalysts have raised extensive attention in selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3 but the poor T-90 operation window limits their industrial application. In present work, FeOx-CeO2 mixed oxides were prepared by a sol-gel method for NH3-SCR, and the effects of sulfuric acid treatment on the catalytic performance were systematically investigated. The results showed that sulfuric acid treatment significantly improved the high temperature activity. Compared to the FeOx-CeO2 sample, the T-90 operation window of FeOx-CeO2-S was greatly broadened from 200-300 degrees C to 250-450 degrees C. Various characterizations demonstrated that sulfuric acid introduction increased redox capacity and also enhanced surface acidity. The synergistic effect of these two parameters was closely associated with the enhanced performance. Further investigations revealed that the sulfuric acid modification favored the formation of active intermediate species for N-2 generation, while inhibited the formation of N2O and NOx, thus contributing to the high catalytic activity and N-2 selectivity.

Abstract:Gaseous SO 2 acidification Ce-based catalysts were prepared and used for the selective reduction of NO with NH 3 . S–Ce was obtained by direct anaerobic sulfation of CeO 2 , while H–S–Ce was obtained by reduction of CeO 2 and then anaerobic sulfation. Both S–Ce and H–S–Ce exhibited excellent SCR activity, and the S–Ce catalyst displayed the best catalytic performance. The activity of CeO 2 was below 30% in the whole temperature range, while the activity of S–Ce reached 90% at 250 °C and remained 100% at 300–450 °C. Anaerobic sulfation could enhance the redox and surface acidity of the S–Ce catalyst. The acid sites favored NH 3 adsorption, while the H–S–Ce catalyst exhibited considerable surface acidity, but the redox performance was weakened by stable sulfate. The reaction mechanism showed that a huge number of NH 3 species adsorbed on S–Ce catalysts were consumed by NO gas. The present nitrate species and NO 2 were removed. The SCR reaction followed E–R and L–H mechanisms for S–Ce. A large number of NH 3 species on H–S–Ce were cleared by NO, and NO could hardly adsorb on its surface. The SCR reaction followed the E–R mechanism.

Abstract:The occurrence of NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction of NO with NH3) reaction on catalyst surface typically requires acid and redox sites. However, the role of acid-redox interaction on NH3-SCR performance is still obscure due to complex acidities and entangled acid-redox sites. Herein, three types of model Ce2(SO4)3-CeO2 catalysts with distinct interfaces are constructed to reveal the effect of acid-redox interaction on NH3-SCR performance. That is, SO4 2-/CeO2-VS (vapor sulfation of ceria) with strong acid-redox interfacial contact, SO4 2-/CeO2-WI (wet impregnation), and SO4 2-/CeO2-SG (solid grinding) with limited interfaces. It is found the redox property is significantly disturbed as a result of the electron-withdrawing effect from the sulfate. Theoretical result unravels that the introduction of Ce2(SO4)3 retards the oxygen vacancy formation over CeO2. Due to restricted interfaces in SO4 2-/CeO2-SG, the negative influence from acid sites is greatly alleviated. Further mechanism study discloses the weakened acid-redox interaction actually changes the nature of surface NOx species, resulting in the generation of reactive species (*O-N-O* and cis-N2O2 2-) and the promotion of surface reaction via Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism.

Abstract:Understanding the nature of active sites on metal oxide catalysts in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO by NH3 (NH3-SCR) is a crucial prerequisite for the development of novel efficient NH3-SCR catalysts. In this work, two CeO2-based SCR catalyst systems with diverse acidic metal oxides-CeO2 interfaces, i.e., Nb2O5-CeO2 (Nb2O5/CeO2 and CeO2/Nb2O5) and WO3-CeO2 (WO3/CeO2 and CeO2/WO3), were prepared and used to reveal the relationship between NH3-SCR activity and surface acidity/redox properties. In combination with the results of the NH3-SCR activity test and various characterizations, it was found that the NH3-SCR performance of Nb2O5-CeO2 and WO3-CeO2 catalysts was highly dependent on the strong interactions between the redox component (CeO2) and acidic component (Nb2O5 or WO3), as well as the amount of paired redox-acid sites. In Situ DRIFTS Studies of NH3-SCR Mechanism over V2O5-CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 Catalysts for Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx

Abstract:TiO2-ZrO2 (Ti-Zr) carrier was prepared by a co-precipitation method and 1 wt. % V2O5 and 0.2 CeO2 (the Mole ratio of Ce to Ti-Zr) was impregnated to obtain the V2O5-CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3. The transient activity tests and the in situ DRIFTS (diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy) analyses were employed to explore the NH3-SCR (selective catalytic reduction) mechanism systematically, and by designing various conditions of single or mixing feeding gas and pre-treatment ways, a possible pathway of NOx reduction was proposed. It was found that NH3 exhibited a competitive advantage over NO in its adsorption on the catalyst surface, and could form an active intermediate substance of -NH2. More acid sites and intermediate reaction species (-NH2), at lower temperatures, significantly promoted the SCR activity of the V2O5-0.2CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst. The presence of O2 could promote the conversion of NO to NO2, while NO2 was easier to reduce. The co-existence of NH3 and O2 resulted in the NH3 adsorption strength being lower, as compared to tests without O2, since O2 could occupy a part of the active site. Due to CeO2’s excellent oxygen storage-release capacity, NH3 adsorption was weakened, in comparison to the 1 wt. % V2O5-0.2CeO2/TiO2-ZrO2 catalyst. If NOx were to be pre-adsorbed in the catalyst, the formation of nitrate and nitro species would be difficult to desorb, which would greatly hinder the SCR reaction. All the findings concluded that NH3-SCR worked mainly through the Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism.

Abstract:Unraveling the dynamics of the active sites upon CeO2-based catalysts in selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia (NH3-SCR) is challenging. In this work, we prepared tungsten-acidified and sulfated CeO2 catalysts and used operando spectroscopy to reveal the dynamics of acid sites and redox sites on catalysts during NH3-SCR reaction. We found that both Lewis and Brønsted acid sites are needed to participate in the catalytic reaction. Notably, Brønsted acid sites are the main active sites after a tungsten-acidified or sulfated treatment, and the change of Brønsted acid sites significantly affects the NOx removal. Moreover, acid functionalization promotes the cerium species cycle between Ce4+ and Ce3+ for the NOx reduction. This work is critical to deeply understanding the natural properties of active sites, and it also provides new insights into the mechanism for NH3-SCR over CeO2-based catalysts.

Abstract:Nickel and sulfate co-modified CeO2-ZrO2 catalysts were prepared by sol-gel method. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, FTIR, XPS, NH3 chemisorption and NH3-SCR activity tests. The results showed that the enhanced acidity of CeO2-ZrO2 catalysts by nickel and sulfate co-modification was responsible for the broadened temperature window and improved the selectivity to N2 in NH3-SCR deNOx. The introduction of nickel to CeO2-ZrO2 solid solutions resulted in more Ce3+ on surface of catalyst, leading to an increased Lewis acidity of catalyst. Higher Lewis acidity of catalyst facilitated ammonia activation at low temperature (<300 °C) and thereby improved the NH3-SCR activity. The enhanced high-temperature (>300 °C) activity and selectivity of catalysts arose from the introduction of Brønsted acid sites (less oxidative than Lewis acid sites) by sulfate modification.

Abstract:Cu/ZSM-5 and CeO2-modified Cu/ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared by a wetness impregnation method. The addition of CeO2 was found to enhance the NOx selective catalytic reduction (SCR) activity of the catalyst at low temperatures, but the high-temperature activity was weakened. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen physisorption, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) and NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (TPD). The results showed that more CuO clusters instead of isolated Cu2+ species were obtained on the modified catalyst. These active CuO clusters, as well as the Cu-Ce synergistic effect, improved the redox property of the catalyst and low-temperatures SCR activity via promoting the oxidation of NO to NO2 and fast SCR reaction. The loss in high-temperatures activity was attributed to the enhanced competitive oxidation of NH3 by O2 and decreased surface acidity of the catalyst.

Abstract:CeO2/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by three methods, and their activities for SCR of NO with NH3 were investigated in the presence of O2. The experimental results indicate that the catalysts prepared by the single step sol–gel method have the best SCR activity and SO2 resistance regardless of the concentration of NO or SO2. High surface area and good redox ability are important to the catalytic activity, while the strong interaction between ceria and titania as well as high concentration of amorphous or highly dispersed nano-crystalline ceria should be the reason for the excellent performance of the catalyst prepared by the single step sol–gel method.
Shape Dependence and Sulfate Promotion of CeO2 for Selective Catalytic Reduction of NO with NH3

Abstract:Thermally stable CeO2 cubes and nanospheres were synthesized and modified by sulfation treatment. Non-sulfated CeO2 cubes and nanospheres did not exhibit good catalytic performance for selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR), but mainly contributed towards an undesired side reaction of NH3 oxidation above 350 degrees C. Based on the structural, morphological and physicochemical characterization, it was observed that CeO2 nanospheres comprising small crystallites could easily release active oxygen species, which resulted in strong NH3 oxidation. However, sulfation treatment greatly improved the catalytic performance of NH3-SCR on both CeO2 cubes and nanospheres. Sulfated CeO2 catalysts did not contribute to significant NH3 oxidation due to the inhibited reducibility of Ce4+ coordinated with the surface sulfates. The adsorbed ammonia could be activated on Bronsted acid sites generated by the formation of surface Ce-2(SO4)(3) species, while gaseous NOx could be activated on separate surface sites of Ce4+. The presence of separate reaction sites for NH3 and NOx is believed to be important for the improved catalytic performance of SCR reaction. Sulfated CeO2 cubes outperformed sulfated CeO2 nanospheres in the entire test temperature window (200-500 degrees C). The improved performance of sulfated CeO2 cubes appears to be related to surfaces with abundant Bronsted acid sites and relatively weak reducibility of Ce4+. These fundamental findings contribute to a better mechanistic understanding needed for designing efficient CeO2-based NOx reduction catalysts in the future.

Abstract:The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3 over fresh and sulfated CeO2 catalysts had been investigated in this study. Experimental results showed that the sulfated CeO2 sample had significantly higher NO conversion than the fresh one and revealed an excellent selectivity to N2 within the temperature range of 200–570°C. By characterizations via BET, XRD, XPS, EDS and TPD, it was concluded that the improvement in SCR activity by sulfation might be originated from the increase of active oxygen species and the enhancement of NH3 chemisorption after surface sulfation, both of which were conducive to NH3 activation.

Abstract:For the selective catalytic reduction of NOx with NH3 (NH3-SCR) reaction, how to precisely adjust the reducibility and surface acidity over SCR catalysts remains a fundamental challenge. Here, a very facile and effective way, the addition of WOx species using an incipient wetness impregnation method, to balance the redox and acidic properties of CeOx for optimizing its SCR performance was proposed. Especially, nanopolyhedron CeOx with predominately exposed (111) facet was prepared as the support of WyCe catalysts. As an effective surface modifier, the WOx species could not only suppress the over-oxidation of NH3 over CeOx by partially covering oxygen vacancies, but also supply abundant Brønsted and Lewis acid sites, which stemmed from WO, WOW, CeOW bonds and electronically deficient unsaturated Cen+, Wn+ cations, respectively. As a result, the SCR activity and N2 selectivity of WyCe catalysts were significantly improved at the same time, through the balance between the redox and acidic properties. The above results might open a new avenue for the design and preparation of more efficient SCR catalysts.

Abstract:Tuning surface acidity is a common strategy to improve the reactivity of Ce-based materials for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3. Traditionally, it is achieved by wet impregnation of sulfate species or treatment under an atmosphere of sulfur dioxide and oxygen. However, the two methods do not bring any change to the electronic state of CeO2, and Ce4+ ions which cause undesired side reactions are largely retained on the surface. Herein, we report a sulfation strategy that can tune the surface acid sites and regulate the electronic state of nano-CeO2. Using SO2 as reducible gas for surface sulfation, we prepared sulfated CeO2 (S-CeO2) catalysts of different morphologies and tested them for the NH3-SCR reaction. The characterization results revealed that the interaction between SO2 and nano-CeO2 is obviously affected by ceria morphology. Among the sulfated catalysts, that with rod morphology (S-CeO2-Rod) shows the highest NOx conversion, and exhibits superior sulfur and water tolerance. The excellent SCR activity of S-CeO2-Rod is attributed to the enrichment of oxygen vacancies and surface Ce3+ ions as a result of the abundant presence of sulfate species.
Mechanism of Selective Catalytic Reduction of NOx with NH3 over CeO2-WO3 Catalysts

Abstract:The mechanism of NH3-selective catalytic reduction (SCR) over a CeO2-WO3 catalyst was investigated by temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) analysis and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The active sites were on CeO2, while WO3 greatly enhanced the amount and strength of the surface Bronsted acid sites and the NO oxidation ability. Both NH4+ and coordinated NH3 contributed to the SCR reaction. Bridging nitrate and monodentate nitrate were confirmed as the reactive nitrate species. Under SCR reaction conditions, surface NH4NO3 was formed, which played the role of an important intermediate species. Two different pathways for the SCR reaction were suggested for the CeO2-WO3 catalyst.

Abstract:Acidity and redox properties of the catalyst are two crucial factors affecting the performance of NH3-SCR. Herein, we design a novel WOx/Cu-CeO2 oxide catalyst in which the WOx species are highly dispersed on the {111}/{100}-terminated surface of Cu-doped CeO2 nanospheres, which exhibits great deNOx activity advantage and wide operating temperature window (200–400 °C, over 85% NOx conversion with a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of 60,000 h−1), as well as good sulfur resistance and N2 selectivity. The relationship among the composition, acidity and redox properties of the WOx/Cu-CeO2 catalyst is established in the NH3-SCR reaction. The combined experimental studies and spectroscopic characterization reveal that the introduction of Cu into the lattice of CeO2 not only increases the surface Ce3+ and oxygen vacancy concentration but also provides more sites for capture and dispersion of WOx species, thus mediating and improving the Lewis and Brønsted acid sites and reducibility of catalyst. XPS and DFT calculations further demonstrate that electronic interaction between WOx and Cu-doped CeO2 is enhanced duo to the existence of interactions of short-range Ce-O-Cu and Ce-O-W. Moreover, the NH3-SCR reaction over WOx/Cu-CeO2 may follow both Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Eley-Rideal reaction pathway according to the in situ DRIFTS.

Abstract:A series of ceria based dual composite oxides were prepared via a co-precipitation method, and we focus on studying the relationships between the catalytic activity and physicochemical properties of ceria based catalysts. It is found that catalytic activity followed the order of CeTi > CeSi > CeAl > pure CeO2; X-ray diffraction indicates that all the ceria based dual composite oxides were the cubic fluorite-type phase of CeO2; the NH3 adsorption desorption results reveal that the NH3 adsorption stability and amount of CeO2 were improved by modification with TiO2, SiO2, or Al2O3; and the order of surface acidity was in agreement with the order of catalytic activity. Combined with other characterizations, we suppose that surface acidity is a decisive factor in influencing the catalytic activity of ceria based catalysts in the NH3-SCR reaction.
