Abstract:Ascorbic acid (AA) is involved in many physiological activities of the body and plays an important role in maintaining and promoting human health. It is also present in many natural and artificial foods. Therefore, the development of highly sensitive and accurate AA sensors is highly desirable for human health monitoring, as well as other commercial application fields. Herein, an ultrasensitive and selective electrochemical sensor based on an aptamer was developed for the determination of AA for the first time. The aptasensor was fabricated by modifying a composite made of polyaniline (PANI) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on a glassy carbon electrode. The morphologies and electrochemical properties of the resulting electrodes were characterized by various analytical methods. The results indicated relatively good electrical conduction properties of PANI for accelerated electron transfer. The modification with AuNPs provided signal amplification, suitable for applications as novel platforms for the sensitive sensing of AA. Under optimized conditions, the proposed aptasensor displayed a wide linear response toward the detection of AA from 1.0 to 1.0 x 10(5) ng L-1 coupled with a low detection limit of 0.10 ng L-1. The sensor also exhibited excellent selectivity and high stability, with at least 2000-fold higher sensitivity than similar previously reported methods. Importantly, the aptasensor exhibited promising properties for the determination of AA in real fruits, vegetables, and infant milk powder, thereby showing potential for food analysis.
Fabrication of a template-synthesized gold nanorod-modified electrode for the detection of dopamine in the presence of ascorbic acid

Abstract:Gold nanorods (GNRs) with suitable aspect ratio were synthesized with a template technique and then dispersed in a saturated sodium citrate solution by ultrasonication to form a GNR suspension. A GNR-modified electrode was fabricated using the GNR suspension. The oxidation of dopamine at the GNR/GC electrode exhibited surprisingly high electrocatalytic activity and adsorption-controlled characteristics. Square-wave voltammetry was used to detect dopamine. At the GNR/GC electrode, the linear concentration range of DA is from 1×10−8M to 1×10−7M and the detection limit (s/n=3) is as low as 5.5×10−9M. The current sensitivity is 3.280μA/μM, and 1000-fold ascorbic acid (AA) cannot interfere with the determination of DA. All these performances are greatly superior to those of the bare GC electrode.
A Label-Free Ratiometric Fluorescence Nanoprobe for Ascorbic Acid Based on Redox-Modulated Dual-Emission Signals.

Abstract:In this paper, we constructed a label-free ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe for ascorbic acid (AA) on the basis of the change in dual-emission signals by the specific reaction between cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) and AA. CoOOH nanoflakes were used as the recognition unit while polymer dots (PFO dots) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) served as luminescent units of the nanoprobe. After electrostatic assembly of PFO dots and AuNCs on the surface of CoOOH nanoflakes, the energy transfer between the PFO dots and CoOOH could occur and thereby quench the fluorescence of the PFO dots. When AA was present, CoOOH nanoflakes were reduced to Co2+, resulting in a recovery of the fluorescence of the PFO dots. In the meantime, the generated Co2+ could combine with the surface ligands of AuNCs, accompanied by a reduction in the luminescence intensity of the AuNCs. Therefore, the fluorescence intensity ratio of PFO dots to AuNCs would be related to the concentration of AA. The nanoprobe enabled highly sensitive analysis of AA with a detection limit of 1.9 μM and showed great performance in human serum samples and living cells. This report may not only endow a CoOOH-based nanoprobe with improved ability but also offer a novel strategy for the construction of ratiometric nanoprobes for AA and have potential applications in research into and clinical diagnosis of AA-related diseases.
Novel and Extremely Sensitive NiAl2O4-NiO Nanostructures on an ITO Sensing Electrode for Enhanced Detection of Ascorbic Acid

Abstract:The current study focused on the design of an extremely sensitive electrochemical sensor of ascorbic acid based on a mixture of NiAl2O4-NiO nanoparticles that, produced in a single step using the sol–gel method, on an ITO electrode. This new sensing platform is useful for the detection of ascorbic acid with a wide range of concentrations extending from the attomolar to the molar. SEM micrographs show the porous structure of the NiAl2O4-NiO sample, with a high specific surface area, which is beneficial for the catalytic performance of the nanocomposite. An XRD diffractogram confirmed the existence of two phases, NiAl2O4 and NiO, both corresponding to the face-centred cubic crystal structure. The performances of the modified electrode, as a biomolecule, in the detection of ascorbic acid was evaluated electrochemically by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The sensor exhibited a sensitive electrocatalytic response at a working potential of E = +0.3 V vs. Ag/Ag Cl, reaching a steady-state current within 30 s after each addition of ascorbic acid solution with a wide dynamic range of concentrations extending from attolevels (10−18 M) to molar (10 mM) and limits of detection and quantification of 1.2 × 10−18 M and 3.96 × 10−18 M, respectively. This detection device was tested for the quantification of ascorbic acid in a 500 mg vitamin C commercialized tablet that was not pre-treated.

Abstract:An electrochemical sensor for selective detection of ascorbic acid (AA) in the presence of dopamine (DA) and uric acid (UA) was fabricated by modifying the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with carbon-supported NiCoO2 (NiCoO2/C) nanoparticles. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopic (EIS) studies reveal the little charge transfer resistance for the modified electrode. The electrocatalytic activity of the modified electrode for the oxidation of AA was investigated. The current sensitivity of AA was enhanced to about five times upon modification. The voltammetric response of AA was well resolved from the responses of DA and UA, and the oxidation potential of AA was negatively shifted to -0.20 V. The biosensor tolerated a wide linear concentration range for AA, from 1.0 × 10(-5)M to 2.63 × 10(-3)M (R(2)=0.9929), with a detection limit of 0.5 μM (S/N = 3). Our results demonstrate that the NiCoO2/C nanomaterials has excellent AA sensing capability, including a fast response time, high reproducibility and stability, with great promise in the quantification of AA in real samples. That makes it a unique electrochemical sensor for the detection of AA which is free from the interference of DA, UA and other interferents.

Abstract:An ascorbic acid (AA) sensor based on an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor (ISFET) was prepared by modifying the sensitive area of the transducer with MnO2 nanoparticles. An additional Nafion membrane coated on top of the sensor was used to immobilize the MnO2 nanoparticles and restrict the amount of ascorbic acid entering the membrane. The reaction of the MnO2 nanoparticles with ascorbic acid produced a local pH change, which was correlated with the ascorbic acid concentration and could be monitored by the ISFET. The linear range of the ascorbic acid sensor was 0.02–1.27mM, and the detection limit was 0.01mM. The effects of buffer concentration, pH, and ionic strength on the sensor performance were also examined. In addition, the sensor has good stability and reproducibility, and the construction and renewal of the sensor are simple and inexpensive.

Abstract:Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) plays crucial roles in maintaining cell growth and differentiation, cytoprotection and energy metabolism. And it is imperative to precisely monitor the variable quantity of NADH. Herein, the connotative feature of acupuncture needle (AN) was explored as electrochemical matrix. Poly-3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene-liganded gold nanoparticle modified AN electrode (ANE/AuNPs/PEDOT) was prepared via a simple electrosynthesis technology. Working together by charge transfer and reaction has a strong response to the electron-transfer of “N” in NADH, which is coordinately presented as a current peak. Interestingly, the behavior of electron-transfer was affected by ambient environment. After the conditional optimization, the fabricated sensor exhibited good linear range of 20 ∼ 500 μmol/L with a detection limit of 18.5 μmol/L. In addition, the sensor can be successfully applied to analysis NADH in serum. Furthermore, the microelectrode exhibits the real-time monitor ability for NADH that released from MDA-MB231 cells. This sensor also possesses the significant performance of high selectivity, stability and reproducibility. Based on the acupuncture history, the developed ANE should be a fascinating microsensor besides the low price, fast response and user-friendly operation.

Abstract:The sensing application of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) is fascinating. CNCs can't produce electrical or optical signals directly. Different from published sensing methods, a novel and simple electrochemical sensor for sensitive and selective detection of ascorbic acid (AA) was constructed based on three-dimensional nitrogen-doped hierarchical porous carbons (NHPC) by carbonizing CNCs and urea. Compared with bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE), the presence of porous carbons effectively increases the electron transport between analytes and the electrode, and significantly reduces the overpotential of AA oxidation. Under the optimum conditions, the electrode comprised of NHPC exhibits an extremely wide linear range from 8 × 10−5 to 1 × 10−2 M (R2 = 0.9996) and 1 × 10−6 to 5 × 10−5 M (R2 = 0.9867) to recognize the AA molecules, with a low detection limit of 2.45 × 10−7 M (S/N = 3) at a sensitivity of 0.1138 μA μM−1 cm−2. In particular, the sensing system for AA detection was further verified by the successful monitoring of AA in some spiked real samples. The fabricated nitrogen-doped CNC-based porous carbon material shows broad potential in the electrochemical application.

Abstract:This paper demonstrated an electrochemical sensor based on NiO nanoparticles-graphene composite film (NiO/GR) modified glassy carbon electrode for detecting ascorbic acid (AA) in the presence of folic acid using differential pulse voltammetry. The obtained NiO/GR nanocomposite was fabricated by electro-deposition technology. The morphologies and interface properties of NiO/GR composite film were examined by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The modified electrode exhibits excellent sensing performance for detecting AA with linear range from 0.05 to 1100μM and a detection limit of 0.0167μM (S/N=3). Under optimal conditions, the sensor displays excellent stability and satisfactory results in real samples analysis.

Abstract:An ascorbic acid (AA) electrochemical sensor was fabricated by ferrocene methanol (Fc-OH) modified multi-walled carbon nanotube yarn (CNTY). The prepared sensor (Fc-OH/CNTY) exhibited outstanding flexibility, highly stretchability, excellent bendability and obviously electrocatalytic activity for oxidation of ascorbic acid. The morphology of Fc-OH/CNTY was evaluated by scanning electron microscope. The electrochemical behaviour of Fc-OH/CNTY sensor was studied by cyclic voltammetry and amperometry measurements. The prepared sensor exhibited a wide linear range from 3 μM to 3.0 mM toward AA, and a detection limit of 1.32 μM (S/N = 3).

Abstract:This paper proposed a novel integrated detector with nanostructured hydrogel electrode (IDNHE) for ascorbic acid detection. The electrochemical detector was integrated on printed circuit board (PCB). The IDNHE employed the nanostructured multi-walled carbon nanotubes/polyaniline/polyvinyl alcohol (MWCNTs/PANI/ PVA) hydrogel as the working electrode. The PVA hydrogel can not only effectively combine the PANI and substrate through hydrogen bonds, but also greatly improve the stability and durability of the detector. MWCNTs were used to fabricate the nanostructures, increasing the surface area of electrode. The detection mechanism is based on the redox reaction of PANI with ascorbic acid. The detection limit and the sensitivity of IDNHE were 0.9 mu M (S/N = 3) and 161.46 mA.mu M-1.cm(-2), respectively. Moreover, IDNHE has a satisfactory reproducibility (RSD = 1.43 %), repeatability (RSD = 2.35 %) and long-term stability for 90 days. Therefore, this work undoubtedly provides a considerate choice for the lab on a chip, and further a promising application prospect for developing the portable real-time monitoring device.

Abstract:We report the facile fabrication of single-phase bimetallic oxide Co3V2O8 nanofibers with a tubular morphology driven by an electrospinning and subsequent thermal annealing process, and carefully investigate the electrochemically fundamental measurements for selective electrochemical detection of ascorbic acid (AA) for the first time. Especially, single-phase Co3V2O8 with the specific oxidation states of Co and V preserves the structural integrity of nanofiber despite disparate thermal decomposition properties between the metal precursors and polymer matrix. Furthermore, noble metal-free electrocatalyst of Co3V2O8 nanofibers with a tubular morphology exhibits high electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA). The designed bimetallic oxide formation with the compositional homogeneity revealed a large electrochemical surface area, which has greatly beneficial merit in enhancing the electrocatalytic AA oxidation compared to pure metal oxides (Co3O4 and V2O5). Considering that low-cost metal oxides are promising electrocatalytic materials for the practical application, as-prepared Co3V2O8 nanofibers with the feasible AA sensing capability (sensitivity of 82.16 μA mM−1 cm−2) could be one of the candidates to resolve the utilization of catalysts restricted by high cost and scarcity of noble metals.

N-Doped Carbon Dots as Fluorescent “Turn-Off” Nanosensors for Ascorbic Acid and Fe 3+ Detection

Abstract:Carbon-based sensors for the detection of ascorbic acid (AA) and ferric ions have drawn a great deal of attention recently, owing to their excellent optical properties and good biocompatibility for biological applications. In this work, a series of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) were fabricated by a microwave-assistant approach with a combination of dl-malic acid and urea as precursors. Under optimal experimental conditions, NCDs with an average size of 4.52 ± 0.05 nm were prepared, containing amino N and C–N functional groups on the surface of carbon cores. Optical analysis showed that the NCDs exhibited excitation-dependent and concentration-dependent emission properties. A single emission at 450 nm was observed with two luminescent centers at 280 and 370 nm for concentrations ranging from 0.02 to 0.08 mg/mL. Moreover, the NCDs were further used as a fluorescence sensor to detect AA and Fe3+ in solution. From the metal ion sensing research, Fe3+ demonstrated significant quenching abilities on NCDs with a detection limit of 1.9 μM. More importantly, the NCDs also showed an excellent quenching response by AA through the static quenching mechanism and inner filter effect with a detection limit of 2.6 μM. Additionally, the low cell toxicity against MA104 and 293T cells from both monkeys and humans were affirmed, respectively. Therefore, the NCDs developed in the present work provide a “turn-off” strategy for the highly sensitive detection of AA and Fe3+ ions and can be potentially applied in both environmental and biological systems.

Plasma-assisted Synthesis of Carbon Fibers/zno Core–shell Hybrids on Carbon Fiber Templates for Detection of Ascorbic Acid and Uric Acid

Abstract:Carbon fibers/ZnO core-shell hybrids were synthesized in this study by plasma-assisted strategy using carbon fiber templates. The hybrids were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction which revealed that the ZnO hybrids were attached on the surface of the carbon nanofibers. The hybrids were used to fabricate microelectrodes, exhibiting a strong electrocatalytic activity toward oxidation of ascorbic acid (AA) and uric acid (UA). Combination of the carbon fibers and ZnO largely increased the surface area of the electrodes, enhanced electron transfer on the electrode surface and widened the distance between oxidation potential of AA and UA. The hybrids therefore endowed the microelectrodes with portability, stability, higher selectivity and sensitivity. A biosensor was thus developed for detection of AA and UA concerning the above properties. The linear range for the AA and UA were 600-2000 mu M and 20-200 p,M, respectively. Abstract:A conductive electrochemical sensor for ascorbic acid was prepared by in-situ growing metal-organic frameworks (ZIF-65) on the surface of carboxylated carbon nanotubes. This nanohybrid was dropped onto glassy carbon electrodes to fabricate a modified ZIF-65@ CNTs electrode. Owing to the introduction of carboxylated carbon nanotubes, the conductivity of the sensor was enhanced with resistance decreased by half. Due to the porous crystal structures, good water-stability and oxidizing nitro groups of ZIF-65, this sensor exhibited high sensory performances to ascorbic acid with the detection limit of 1.03 mu M. Excellent selectivity, anti-interference and reproducibility enabled it as a promising candidate in biomolecular sensing applications. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
A novel paper-based electrochemical device modified with Ni-doped TiO 2 nanocrystals-decorated graphene oxide for ascorbic acid detection

Abstract:This study presents the development of a novel paper-based electrochemical device modified with pure and nickel-doped TiO 2 nanocrystals and graphene oxide to enhance its ability to detect ascorbic acid (AA). The use of nanomaterials in the fabrication of the sensor provides a high surface area-to-volume ratio, leading to an increase in the sensitivity and selectivity of the device. The nanomaterials were synthesized, and a combination with the best properties was selected for detecting AA. The morphological, structural, and electrical properties of the nanomaterials in the paper device were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy (Raman), and cyclic voltammetry (CV), respectively. The sensor's performance was evaluated through various experiments, including cyclic voltammetry, to measure its sensitivity and selectivity in detecting AA. The results indicate that adding Ni-doped TiO 2 nanocrystals improves the sensor's sensitivity while incorporating graphene oxide enhances its selectivity. Furthermore, the sensor's performance was compared to that of other commonly used sensors, and it was found to be highly sensitive and selective. Therefore, this paper-based electrochemical sensor, modified with nanomaterials, shows great potential for detecting AA and other applications, such as environmental monitoring and medical diagnostics, due to its high sensitivity and selectivity, low cost, and ease of use.

Abstract:Conductive metal-organic frameworks can provide unique porous structures, large pore volumes, many catalytically active sites and high crystallinity, and so are becoming increasingly important and attractive as electrocatalytic materials. The present work synthesized nanorods of the conductive compound Ni3(2,3,6,7,10,11-hexaiminotriphenylene)2 (Ni3(HITP)2) with a high degree of crystallinity from HITP ligands and Ni2+ ions. Screen-printed electrodes made with this material were employed to fabricate an enzyme-free sensor for the detection of ascorbic acid (AA). The sensor exhibited good catalytic activity during the electrocatalytic analysis of AA in alkaline media, attributed to the synergistic effect of highly active Ni-N4 catalytic sites in the nanorods, the two-dimensional superimposed honeycomb lattice of the Ni3(HITP)2, and the large specific surface area of this material. The latter property facilitated efficient electron transfer during catalytic oxidation. A portable electrochemical AA detection system was developed using Ni3(HITP)2 as the electrode material together with application-specific integrated circuits and a smartphone application with App. Good sensing performance was obtained, including a wide linear range (2-200 μM) with high sensitivity (0.814 μA μM-1 cm-2), and low detection limit (1 μM). This system can be used to monitor AA levels and trends in sweat to assess vitamin C intake as a part of personal health management.

Abstract:[] In this study, we present a novel optical sensing system for the real-time detection of ascorbic acid (AA), also known as vitamin C, a vital water-soluble vitamin with significant clinical relevance. AA serves not only as a biomarker for various diseases but also as a treatment for conditions such as scurvy, anemia, and cardiovascular disease. Our approach involves the development of a highly sensitive fiber optic sensor tailored for AA detection, utilizing a multimode fiber-four-core fiber (MMF-FCF) configuration. Fabrication involved advanced techniques, including fusion splicing and hydrofluoric (HF) acid etching, which created a core-mismatch structure generating sufficient evanescent waves (EWs). We immobilized tungsten disulfide (WS2) thin-film and cerium dioxide nanorods (CeO2-NRs) onto the probe's surface to enhance the sensor's performance. Thereafter, EWs excited the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) phenomenon of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) immobilized on the probe's surface, facilitating AA detection. To enhance AA sensor selectivity, the probe's surface was functionalized with the ascorbate oxidase (AOx) enzyme. The experiments utilized a laser source and an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) to achieve precise excitation and signal amplification, enhancing the sensor's overall performance. Experimental results demonstrated a sensor sensitivity of 0.796 nm/mM and a limit of detection (LoD) of within the 0– concentration range. These findings emphasize the sensor's potential value in clinical applications for AA detection.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> Ascorbic acid (AA) detection in biological sample and food sample is critical for human health. Herein, a MnO2 nanosheet (MnO2-NS)-based ratiometric fluorescent nanosensor has been developed for high sensitive and specific detection of AA. The MnO2-NS presents peroxidase-like activity and can oxidize non-fluorescent substrate of o-phenylenediamine (OPDA) into fluorescent substrate, presenting maximum fluorescence at 568 nm (F568). If MnO2-NS is premixed with AA, the MnO2-NS is then decomposed as Mn2+ by AA, decreasing the fluorescent intensity of F568. Meantime, AA is oxidized as dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA), which can react with OPDA to generate fluorescent substrate. A new fluorescence response is found at 425 nm (F425). The dual fluorescent responses can be excited with a universal excitation wavelength, simplifying the detection procedure. With F425/F568 as readout, limit of detection for AA reaches as low as 10.0 nM. Satisfactory recoveries are found for AA detection in serum and diverse beverages. The ratiometric strategy significantly eliminates false-negative and false-positive results, providing a cost-effective, rapid, and reliable way for AA detection in real sample.

Abstract:Engineered nanomaterials that exhibit enzyme-like activity are highly sought after for designing enzymeless sensors, which circumvent the need for costly enzymes. In this context, we synthesized tungsten oxide (WO 3 ) nanostructures via the hydrothermal method and characterized them using various techniques. A slurry of the resulting WO 3 nanostructure was prepared and drop-cast onto a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) to construct an enzymeless sensor. The electrochemical characteristics of the WO 3 /SPCE sensor were evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). An optimized WO 3 /SPCE sensor was electrochemically evaluated for ascorbic acid (AA) detection at varying concentrations employing CV analysis. The CV response exhibited a significant oxidation peak for AA, which gradually intensified with an increment in the AA concentration. The sensor demonstrated a linear response up to 1000 μM, high sensitivity (5.62 μA/μM-cm 2 ), and a detection limit (DL) of 0.6 μM. Moreover, the engineered enzymeless WO 3 /SPCE sensor displayed excellent selectivity, stability (94.5 % over 6 weeks), and fabrication reproducibility (RSD of 9.2 % across 7 devices). Thus, this WO 3 nanostructure proves to be a promising candidate for the large-scale, cost-effective sensor development for AA detection and holds potential for the fabrication of enzyme-based biosensors.
