Abstract:This paper addresses the grain characteristics and growth model of nano CaO under high-temperature calcination conditions. Nano CaO samples derived from nano CaCO3 were prepared with a chamber calciner under different calcination times (10–480min) and temperatures (750–900°C) to study the nano CaO grain growth. X-ray diffractometer and the Scherrer formula were used to test and calculate the grain size of nano CaO. The microstructure and sorption performances of nano CaO were observed by a nitrogen adsorption/desorption apparatus and a thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed that the grain size of CaO grew faster as the calcination temperature increased. A growth asymptote was approached by prolonging the consecutive calcination time. A grain growth model for nano CaO was built according to solid phase sintering theory for the following conditions: 10–120min isothermal calcination at 750–900°C. The activation energy for nano CaO grain growth was calculated as 120kJ/mol. In addition, the relation of grain growth, structural properties and CO2 adsorption performance of nano CaO are discussed.

Abstract:A porous nano-CaO/MgO-based adsorbent was prepared using MgO as a support in order to increase the sorption capacity and durability. The magnesium sol prepared by reacting MgO slurry with citric acid was added to nano-CaCO3 slurry and the mixture was calcinated to obtain the nano-CaO/MgO-based adsorbent. The influence of MgO content on the structure and sorption performance of the resulting adsorbent was studied in detail. The pore radius and specific surface area of the adsorbent increased with higher MgO content. The adsorbent exhibited superior sorption performance during calcium looping and maintained a good durability at the calcination temperature, thus being an interesting candidate for future work.
Modified Kinetics Model of Nano CaO Reactions with CO2 in a CaO-Based Adsorbent

Abstract:During the initial carbonation-calcination looping, the sorption capacity of nano CaO based adsorbent will decay and then keep stable. This study concerns the modified kinetics of nano CaO with CO2 in a CaO-based CO2 adsorbent after pretreatment of multiple looping cycles to reach stable reaction properties. The condition of pre-treatment included carbonation temperature of 600℃ and calcination temperature of 800℃ for 42 cyclic runs. The measurements of reaction rate were carried on a thermo-gravimetric analysis at 550~630℃ under a N2 atmosphere with 0.010~0.020 MPa CO2 mole pressures. A gas-solid ion reactive adsorption model was accepted for further parameters optimized. The modified gas-solid ion reactive adsorption kinetics model was then used for the simulation of experimental data. The simulation result of activation energy for carbonation of the pre-treated adsorbent is 77.7 kJ?mol?1 , which is 2.5 times than that of fresh nano CaO based adsorbent, and the average relative deviation of the CaO conversion is less than 6.4%. The reactive sorption rate in the fast surface reaction regime of nano CaO with CO2 is well represented by the modified gas-solid ion reactive adsorption model.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to prepare the nano-CaO-CaTiO(3)adsorbents with both high CO(2)sorption capacity and high durability. A series of nano-CaO-CaTiO(3)adsorbents with different CaTiO(3)grain sizes werein situprepared by the reaction between TiO(2)and nano-CaO with variation of the preparation methods, doping contents and thermal pretreatment conditions. The results showed that the CaTiO(3)grain size would decrease by adopting the adsorption phase reaction method, reducing the doping content as well as thermal pretreatment temperature and time properly. Moreover, smaller CaTiO(3)grain size was favourable for increasing sorption capacity of the adsorbent, while larger CaTiO(3)grain size was more helpful for improving the durability. Under the consideration of the benefit of both the sorption capacity and the durability of adsorbents, the optimal CaTiO(3)grain size was got as 23.5 nm and its sorption capacity remained 8.52 mol/kg at the 50th cycle under the actual severe regeneration condition.

Abstract:Abnormal grain growth (AGG) has been commonly observed but the mechanism still remains unclear. In this study, the formation of abnormally large grains was investigated in compressed nickel powders. By periodical sintering in the large volume press, AGG occurred and resulted in a gradient coarse-grained structure. Through the improvement of the cell assembly by introducing tungsten tablets with a higher shear modulus, the optimized grained gradient structure can be obtained, which arises from tuning the AGG associated with the suppress of deformation. This work would be a potential way to design heterogeneous gradient nanostructured materials with excellent strength and ductility.

Abstract:Calcium looping-based CO2 capture is generally considered more efficient than conventional postcombustion CO2 capture. Calcium carriers' calcination in the regenerator is crucial because proper operating parameters can provide regenerated carriers suitable for the gasifier and prevent sintering. This work focuses on the calcination behavior of CaCO3 in calcium looping systems. In this study, the calcination kinetic parameters under various conditions were investigated using a model-free isoconversional method based on nonisothermal thermogravimetric analysis in a macroscope, in combination with X-ray diffraction tests of the samples in a microscope. Results in the macroscope showed that the apparent activation energy ranges from 121.8 to 163.0 kJ/mol under a conversion range of 0.3- 0.9, and the CaCO3 calcination mechanism involves transient nucleation and two-dimensional growth. Results observed from the microscope demonstrated that CaCO3 tends to be calcined on a plane, consistent with the macroscope model with two-dimensional nucleation. Since the microscopic mechanism is reflected, the kinetic model can be widely adopted, and calcium-based carrier modification strategies can also be proposed to prevent sintering of the carrier perpendicular to the ((-)104) plane.

Abstract:A rate-equation-based grain model was developed to describe and predict the complex behaviors of the carbonation reaction of CaO with CO2 in calcium looping. In the model, the assumption of a uniform CaCO3 film at the grain scale was replaced with the product island morphology, and the rate equation theory was used to calculate the growth of product islands; this modified grain model was integrated into a particle scale model in which gas diffusion inside a CaO particle and the pore plugging effect were considered. The macroscopic kinetics of the carbonation reaction-including the initial fast stage and the later product layer diffusion stage-could be predicted successfully using the developed theory and was validated by comparison with experimental data. The effects of structural parameters on the carbonation kinetics were discussed. Furthermore, a nanometer-scale grain design criterion for CaO sorbent was proposed to optimize particle structure and achieve maximum CaO conversion in the initial fast stage; this concept was validated and supported by the developed rate-equation-based grain model. This developed model provides a link between microscopic mechanisms at the grain level and the gas diffusion behavior inside a sorbent particle, and it can be used to describe the macroscopic kinetics of a gas-solid reaction.

Abstract:Cyclic CO2 capture using CaO-based sorbents derived from commercial pure micro-sized CaCO3 and nano-sized CaCO3 was investigated, focusing on the different characteristics of carbonation conversions, carbonation rates, surface areas, pore volumes, morphological changes, and microstrains of two sorbents during high-temperature reactions. The results indicated that the CaO-based sorbent derived from nano-sized CaCO3 (NC-CaO) provided higher carbonation conversions and carbonation rates than the CaO-based sorbent derived from micro-sized CaCO3 (MC-CaO) in the cyclic CO2 capture reactions. Furthermore, NC-CaO retained its fast carbonation rate at the beginning of each cycle for several tens of seconds. In contrast, the carbonation rate of MC-CaO diminished with an increase in the cycle number. Unfortunately, NC-CaO sintered more easily. Its grains, which were composed of numerous spherical nanocrystallites, suffered from dramatic morphological changes during high-temperature reactions. A mechanism of grain boundary migration was employed to explain the sintering of CaO-based sorbent. The smaller crystallites were more susceptible to be merged by the bigger crystallites during high-temperature reactions.
High-Temperature Attrition of Nano CaO-Based CO2-Reactive Adsorbents in the Calcium Looping Process

Abstract:The high-temperature attrition behavior of nano CaO-based CO2-reactive adsorbents was studied during multiple calcium looping (CaL) processes with a carbonation temperature of 600 °C and a calcination temperature of 800 °C using a fluidized bed reactor. The effect of the cyclic run number and the presence of steam on attrition were analyzed under a given fluidization number. The features of the hot attrition revealed that the attrition of the adsorbents occurred mainly in the first 15 cycles, and the maximum average single attrition loss reached about 3.6% in the first five cycles. With the CaL run number increasing, the average single attrition loss decreased, was basically stable below 0.5% between 20 and 60 cycles, and was less than 0.2% during 60–90 cycles. Moreover, because of the presence of steam, the attrition loss increased by about 8.9% in the calcination stage while attrition loss only increased by 2.8% in the carbonation stage. The particle size distribution, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectrometry tests showed that the attrition was mainly due to the surface flaking, and the high-temperature steam made adsorbent particles more prone to cracking. Additionally, attrition mainly occurred in the calcium-rich area, which was the weak point of the mechanical strength of the adsorbents.

Abstract:One of the post-combustion CO2 capture technologies that have sufficiently been proved to be the best candidates for practical large scale post-combustion application is the calcium looping cycle. However, the CO2 capture capacity of a calcium based sorbent derived from natural limestone decays through long-term cyclic utilization; thus, the development of novel sorbents to achieve a high CO2 capture capacity is an critical challenge for the calcium looping cycle technology. In this paper, we report the preparation and character of a new calcium based sorbent produced via the combustion of a dry gel. The results show that the novel calcium-based sorbent has a much higher residual carbonation conversion as well as a better performance of anti-sintering when compared with the calcium based sorbent derived from commercial micrometer grade CaCO3 and manometer grade CaCO3. It is reasonable to propose that the different final carbonation performances are induced by their different pore structures and BET surface areas rather than by different particle sizes. Compared with the commercial nano CaO, the morphology of the new sorbent shows a more rough porous appearance with hollow nanostructure. During carbonation, CO2 diffused more easily through the hollow structure than through a solid structure to reach the unreacted CaO. Besides, there is less chance for the hollow nanostructured particles to be merged together during the high temperature reactions.

Abstract:Calcium looping (CaL) is a promising technology for post-combustion CO2 capture and concentrated solar energy storage. The transition metal and calcium aluminate co-doped CaO materials have drawn a lot of attention due to the superior CO2 adsorption capacity. In this work, the co-promotion mechanism of Mn and Ca3Al2O6 on the CO2 adsorption of CaO-based materials in the calcium looping process was investigated by density functional theory. The structural properties and CO2 adsorption performance of CaO, Ca3Al2O6 doped CaO, and Mn/Ca3Al2O6 co-doped CaO structures were determined. The formation of O–Al and O–Mn bonds plays a crucial role in preventing the doped CaO from sintering. The adsorption energy of the CaO cluster on the Ca3Al2O6 and Mn/Ca3Al2O6 surface is −5.66 and −11.15 eV, respectively, which is 2.4 and 4.7 times higher than that on the CaO surface, indicating the enhanced structural stability of the doped CaO. The presence of Ca3Al2O6 has less contribution to CO2 adsorption. The adsorption energy and charge transfer for CO2 on Ca3Al2O6–CaO (−2.03 eV, −0.73 e) is the same as pure CaO (−1.93 eV, −0.71 e). Introducing Mn remarkably improves CO2 adsorption performance by enhancing electron transport. The adsorption energy and charge transfer for CO2 on Mn/Ca3Al2O6–CaO are the highest with −4.45 eV and −0.81 e, respectively. The Mn/Ca3Al2O6 co-doped CaO demonstrates superior structural stability and enhanced CO2 adsorption performance, which seems promising for efficient CO2 adsorption in the CaL process.

Abstract:In-situ conversion of the captured CO2 by CaO to CO is realized by using renewable H2 in the calcination stage of calcium looping process, which effectively reduces the decomposition temperature of CaCO3 and alleviates the sintering of CaO. However, the mechanism for this reaction is unclear which is difficult to determine just by experimental methods. In this work, the reaction mechanism for in-situ conversion of captured CO2 by CaO to CO in presence of H2 during calcium looping process was investigated by density function theory (DFT) analysis. The CaCO3 direct decomposition was compared to clarify the effect of H2 on CaO regeneration. The electron differential densities (EDD) and partial density of states (PDOS) for HCO3* and CO3* models were also compared. The results show the detailed reaction pathway for in-situ conversion of the capture CO2 by CaO in presence of H2 in the calcination stage of CaCO3. H2 is adsorbed on the CaCO3 surface to form OH*, CO2*and HCO3*. CO2* further is decomposed into CO and O*. HCO3* is decomposed into CO2 and OH*. Then, two OH* are attracted to each other to form H2O and O*. The CO3* hydrogenation is the rate control step in this reaction with energy barrier of 3.12 eV. The presence of H2 causes a 0.35 eV reduction in the energy barrier for CaO generation on CaCO3 surface. The overlap of CO orbitals and the disturbance of electron clouds around O atom all confirm that the addition of H2 makes C and O atoms in HCO3* have small interaction energy. The DFT calculations reinforce the possible mechanism of in-situ conversion of the captured CO2 by CaO in presence of H2 during calcium looping process.

Abstract:Calcium oxide (CaO), a CO2 sorbent and key ingredient in the process of making cement, exhibits excellent potential for carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) applications through calcium looping and integrated carbon capture and utilization, owing to its outstanding kinetic properties and high recyclability. From a fundamental standpoint, it is important to establish a comprehensive and precise carbonation kinetic model for CaO. In the present study, a density functional theory (DFT)-based rate equation was developed to predict the gas–solid reaction kinetics of CaO carbonation with CO2 in calcium looping. The reaction pathway of CaO carbonation, including surface reactions and structural transformations, was obtained by a transition state search of DFT calculations, and the transition state theory was used to calculate the reaction rate constants. The nucleation model was implemented in the mean-field surface reaction model to describe the nucleation of the CaCO3 product at the gas–solid interface. A grain model was developed to couple the surface reaction and CO2 diffusion through the product layer. The developed theory was validated using a wide range of experimental data, and the negative activation energy of CaO carbonation close to equilibrium was accurately predicted. The developed first principle-based rate equation provides a detailed theoretical framework for predicting CaO performance and optimizing the microstructure of Ca-based sorbents.
Preparation of High Sorption Durability Nano-CaO–ZnO CO2 Adsorbent

Abstract:ZnO was doped into nano-CaO adsorbents to increase the sorption durability in the calcium looping (CaL) process. The preparation of a nano-CaO–ZnO adsorbent was studied in detail by varying the ZnO additive amounts and thermal pretreatment conditions. Also, the performance of the nano-CaO–ZnO adsorbent was evaluated under different CaL operation conditions. The results showed that the carbonation conversion of CaO in the adsorbent was stably kept as 57.4% after 15 cycles when the optimum values of the molar ratio of CaO to ZnO was 8, thermal pretreatment temperature and time were 850 °C and 1 h, respectively, and the carbonation and regeneration temperatures were 700 and 750 °C, respectively. The anti-sintering performance of ZnO was close to that of ZrO2 and TiO2 and better than that of MgO and Al2O3. The reason for the high durability of the nano-CaO–ZnO adsorbent was that low thermal expansibility dopant ZnO, could promote the recurrence of nano-CaO grains, leading to self-reactivation in the CaL process.

Abstract:Ca-Looping is a promising technology for capturing CO2. Here, ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations combined with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were employed to provide atomic-level insights into the carbonation reaction of CaO with CO2. Results showed that two fast kinetic stages appear when the temperature increases. To understand this phenomenon, the diffusion, structural evolution as well as the carbonates accumulation were analyzed. It was found that the recovery of the initial fast reaction rate largely stems from the formations of pyrocarbonate anion. On CO2-CaCO3 interface, the solid product molecules are continuously propagated and joined in the existing C2O52− phase with multiple instances of formation and dissociation. Furthermore, surface carbonates can combine with crystal oxygen in the form of metastable corner-linked CO44− tetrahedron to diffuse inward the CaO particle. The increase of temperature greatly accelerates the formation of outer polymeric phases of CO2-CO32− and diffusion of inner CO32−, causing more CO2 molecules to be adsorbed and the carbonation reaction rate rises sharply.

Abstract:CaCO3 calcination is an important step in calcium looping, and the formed pore structure of porous CaO is critical for subsequent carbonation towards carbon dioxide. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the evolution of the pore structure of the sorbent in the calcination step. A mathematical model describing the pore size distribution during the calcination of the CaCO3 particle was developed. CaCO3 calcination is calculated following a shrinking core model at the CaO-CaCO3 interface, and CO2 diffuses through the porous CaO layers. During the decomposition of CaCO3, after the departure of the CO2 molecule from its original lattice, a vacancy will be formed that will diffuse inside the solid, and the collision and coagulation of the vacancy results in pore formation. A rate equation theory was proposed to describe the vacancy coagulation and pore evolution inside the solid, with rate expressions derived for the pore size distribution function with time evolution. To validate the developed model, the evolution of the pore size distribution during CaCO3 calcination was experimentally measured in a high-temperature furnace combined with the nitrogen adsorption method. It was found that there is a characteristic bimodal distribution for the pore structure of calcined CaCO3, with average pore sizes of ∼2.8 nm and ∼50 nm. The calculated results agree well with the experimental data, and the relative importance of growth and coagulation was discussed.
