Abstract:High-quality thick light harvesting film is important for two-dimensional (2D) perovskite solar cells (PVSCs). The relationship between the structure of the second spacer cation (SSC+) in precursor solution and the morphology of the pervoskite film was studied. By applying structurally symmetric guanidinium (GA+) as SSC+ and utilizing the solvation effect of GA+ in N, N-dimethylformamide (DMF), the solvent of precursor, we realized the fabrication of 2D BA2MA4Pb5I16 (BA+ = butylammonium, MA+ = methylammonium) perovskite film with oriented crystal grains grown through the 530 nm thick film on PEDOT:PSS substrate, which favored the fast transport of the charge carriers. The inverted planar-structured PVSCs exhibit a hero PCE of 14.94%. The device efficiency was further improved to 16.26%, one of the highest efficiencies for reported 2D PVSCs, through interface optimization via adding MACl into the precursor solution. The unsealed device presents moisture stability by maintaining 90% of its initially PCE after 800-hour exposure to the air with humidity of 55±5%. This work provides a new approach toward high-performing 2D PVSCs in terms of both PCE and stability.

Abstract:In inverted perovskite solar cells, conventional planar 2D/3D perovskite heterojunctions typically exhibit a type-II band alignment, where the electric field tends to drive the electron motion in the opposite direction to the direction of electron transfer. Here, a 2D/3D gradient heterojunction is developed by allowing the 2D perovskite to infiltrate the 3D perovskite surface along the grain boundaries using the interaction between the organic cation of the 2D perovskite and the pseudohalogen thiocyanate ion (SCN-), which has the ability to diffuse downward. The infiltrated 2D perovskite not only fills the gaps of grain boundaries with improved structural stability, but it also reconstructs the original landscape of the electric field toward the n-doped surface to enable more rapid electron transfer and weaken the adverse type-II band alignment effect. Since 2D perovskite seals the GBs, the nonvolatile SCN- can accumulate at the top and bottom dual interfaces, releasing residual stress and significantly inhibiting nonradiative recombination. The device exhibits an excellent efficiency of 24.76% (certified 24.29%) and long-term stability that is >90% of the original PCE value after 800 h of heating at 85 °C or in high humidity (≈65%).

Abstract:The main bottlenecks limiting the photovoltaic performance and stability of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are trap-assisted non-radiative recombination losses and photochemical degradation at the interface between perovskite and charge-transport layers. We propose a strategy to manipulate the crystallization of methylammonium-free perovskite by incorporating a small amount of 2-aminoindan hydrochloride into the precursor inks. This additive also modulates carrier recombination and extraction dynamics at the buried interface via the formation of a bottom-up two-dimensional/three-dimensional heterojunction. The resultant inverted PSC achieves a power conversion efficiency of 25.12% (certified 24.6%) at laboratory scale (0.09 cm 2 ) and 22.48% at a larger area (1 cm 2 ) with negligible hysteresis. More importantly, the resulting unencapsulated devices show superior operational stability, maintaining >98% of their initial efficiency of >24% after 1,500 hours of continuous maximum power point tracking under simulated AM1.5 illumination. Meanwhile, the encapsulated devices retain >92% of initial performance for 1,200 hours under the damp-heat test (85 °C and 85% relative humidity).

Abstract:This study elucidates the formation dynamics and film structure of 2D‐Dion‐Jacobson phase on a template of 3D triple‐cation perovskite films via in situ X‐ray scattering. The solvent‐induced surface reconstruction of the template allows the control of phase and phase distribution in 2D films. The tailored energy landscape of 2D/3D heterostructures leads to highly efficient and stable inverted perovskite solar cells. 2D‐on‐3D (2D/3D) perovskite heterostructures present a promising strategy to realize efficient and stable photovoltaics. However, their applicability in inverted solar cells is limited due to the quantum confinement of the 2D‐layer and solvent incompatibilities that disrupt the underlying 3D layer, hampering electron transport at the 2D/3D interface. Herein, solvent‐dependent formation dynamics and structural evolution of 2D/3D heterostructures are investigated via in situ X‐ray scattering. It is revealed that solvent interaction with the 3D surface determines the formation sequence and spatial distribution of quasi‐2D phases with n = 2–4. Isopropanol (IPA) reconstructs the perovskite into a PbI2‐rich surface, forming a strata with smaller n first, followed by a thinner substratum of larger n. In contrast, 2,2,2‐Trifluoroethanol (TFE) preserves the 3D surface, promoting the formation of uniformly distributed larger n domains first, and smaller n last. Leveraging these insights, Dion–Jacobson perovskites are used with superior charge transport properties and structural robustness to fabricate 2D/3D heterostructures dominated by n ≥ 3 and engineer a favorable energy landscape for electron tunneling. Inverted solar cells based on 3‐Aminomethylpyridine and TFE achieve a champion efficiency of 23.60%, with Voc and FF of 1.19 V and 84.5%, respectively, and superior stabilities with t94 of 960 h under thermal stress.

Abstract:In the past decade, three-dimensional (3D) perovskites have been under intense study. However, these devices always suffer from severe performance degradation. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) perovskites have attracted increasing attention due to their excellent environmental stability, but their low power conversion efficiency (PCE) limits their application. Therefore, many strategies have been applied to manipulate the crystallization and suppress the defects and low-n value phases. Additive engineering, as one of the most effective methods to achieve the above-mentioned goals, has been extensively studied. In this contribution, thiourea (TU) and methylammonium chloride (MACl) are successfully employed to contribute synergistically to optimize the crystallization process, leading to an enlarged grain size, smooth and dense surface morphology, and suppressed distribution of n values for improved phase purity. As a result, the optimized inverted Dion-Jacobson (DJ) 2D perovskite solar cell (PSC) device delivers an elevated PCE of 12.16% with a significantly improved short-circuit current density (JSC) of 18.78 mA cm(-2) and fill factor (FF) of 62.70%. In addition, the optimized devices show good environmental stability when exposed to ambient air.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) perovskites with excellent stability and optoelectronic properties have aroused great interest for use in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). To date, the power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of state-of-the art 2D-PSCs are non-satisfactory because of higher recombination losses in 2D quantum wells. Here, based on a series of alkylic ammonium spacers (ethylamine to hexylamine) with different chain lengths, we present a strategy via the molecular van der Waals interaction to realize modified crystallization, phase distribution, and quantum-confined behaviors in Ruddlesden-Popper 2D perovskites ( n = 4). With the optimal amylamine (AA) spacer, high-quality 2D perovskites featuring well-aligned phase alignments with fewer unfavorable n-value species and a reduced exciton binding energy have been realized, leading to sufficient charge transfers through different n-value components. The devices based on (AA) 2MA 3Pb 4I 13 yield a champion PCE of 18.42%, showing an impressive open-circuit voltage of 1.25 V and a fill factor exceeding 0.80.

Abstract:Even the most efficient inverted p‐i‐n architecture perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are still inferior to those with regular n‐i‐p architecture, which is mainly limited by interfacial loss. Herein, both wet and dry metal‐halides perovskite film were regulated through organic molecules‐assisted sequential interfacial engineering for high‐performance inverted PSCs. In specific, organic acetic acid treatment on the wet film potently regulates the nucleation and crystallization of perovskite films. Then further loading 4‐(Dimethylamino)benzoic acid on the dry perovskite film creates a passivating agent layer to suppress defect formation, leading to more phase‐pure and conductive perovskite films. Combined experimental and theoretical results illustrate that such sequential treatment is beneficial for decreasing surface trap states, nonradiative recombination, and carrier transport loss. As a result, the target inverted PSC exhibits an unprecedented‐high fill factor (FF) of 85.31% together with a champion efficiency of 21.37%, which is greatly improved relative to the reference (FF of 79.60%, and efficiency of 19.40%). It should be noted that such a high FF is among the highest report and corresponding to 94.38% of the Shockley‐Queisser limited FF (90.39%) of PSCs with a bandgap of 1.576 eV. Abstract:Inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have attracted broad research and industrial interest owing to their suppressed hysteresis, cost-effectiveness, and easy-fabrication. However, the issue of non-radiative recombination losses at the n-type interface between the perovskite and fullerene has impeded further improvement of photovoltaic performance. Here, we modify the n-type interface of FAPbI3 perovskite films by constructing a stereochemical two-dimensional (2D) perovskite interlayer, in which the organic cations comprise both pyridine and ammonium groups. The pyridine N donor can create stable bonding with the surface-uncoordinated Pb on the perovskite, thereby passivating the shallow-level defects and enhancing the air stability of the film. Furthermore, the pyridine N donor also offers a positive polar interface to decrease the surface work function of the perovskite film, enabling n-type modification. Ultimately, we employ a p-i-n photovoltaic (PV) device with the positive dipole interlayer at perovskite/fullerene contact and achieve remarkable photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.0%.

Abstract:Planar heterojunction perovskite solar cells have received a lot of attention due to their great potential, such as low-cost and rapidly improving performance. However, the poor fill surface coverage and numerous pinholes usually exist in the organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite layers, leading to undesirable electron-hole recombination. Herein, inverted cell structures based on NiOx/PCBM interfacial materials have been studied. A simple preheating method facilitates the formation of a relatively continuous and compact layer of well-crystallized CH3NH3PbI3-xClx perovskite by a one-step solution process, which can minimize film defects and thus improve the charge extraction dissociation and transport abilities at the interface. As a result, synchronized improvements in photovoltage (V-oc), photocurrent (J(sc)) and fill factor (FF) lead to similar to 25% enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE), compared to solar cells using conventional perovskite films. Our study highlights a simple and effective method to improve the perovskite film quality and the photovoltaic performance of inverted perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Interface engineering has been proved to be a practical strategy to enhance power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability of perovskite solar cells. Recently approaches involving ultra-thin layer deposition and vacuum-processing, while improving PCE, increase the processing complexity, and thus the overall cost. In this paper, we demonstrate a high-efficiency inverted planar perovskite solar cell, obtained with a simple wet-chemistry based, room-temperature, and cost-effective process, which synthesizes two interfacial layers: solution processed molybdenum oxide (named s-MoOx) for anode and titanium(IV) oxide bis(2,4-pentanedionate) (TOPD) for cathode buffer layers. Steady-state photoluminescence (PL), time resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are conducted to characterize the charge transport properties, confirming an enhanced charge extraction efficiency and a suppressed charge recombination. In addition, the introduction of the interfacial layers facilities formation of an ohmic contact with the metal electrode, reducing the charge transfer resistance and increasing the FF to as high as 80.7%. The optimized solar cells achieve the best PCE of 16.04% which far exceeds the PCE of devices without these interfacial layers (PCE = 11.2%).

Abstract:Two- and three-dimensional (2D/3D) heterojunctions have been widely used to improve the performance of n-type/intrinsic/p-type (NIP) structured perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the electron blocking nature of the 2D ligands, such as phenethylammonium (PEA+), on the perovskite surface is not conducive to PSCs with a p-type/intrinsic/n-type (PIN) structure. In this work, we improve the device performance by eliminating the 2D phase on the perovskite surface through the subsequent annealing process. After eliminating the 2D phase, a dipole layer forms with the remaining PEA+, resulting in an excellent energy level alignment between the perovskite and electron transport layer. As a result, the solar cells with the PIN structure using a 1.67 eV wide-bandgap triple-cation perovskite show an enhanced power conversion efficiency of 20.61% with a short circuit current density of 20.05 mA cm-2 and a fill factor of 81.57%. Furthermore, the open-circuit voltage (VOC) is improved from 1.20 V to 1.26 V, yielding a VOC deficit of 410 mV, which represents one of the lowest values among the PIN structured wide-bandgap PSCs. We studied the impact of phenethylammonium chloride on PIN-structured wide bandgap perovskite solar cells. Elimination of the 2D phase results in a champion efficiency of 20.61% and a VOC loss of only 410 mV with hysteresis-free J-V curves.

Herein, crystallization control via solvent engineering for ACI perovskite (GA)MA(n)Pb(n)I(3n+1) ( = 5, GA = guanidinium, MA = methylammonium) that enables preferential QW distribution within the film and augments the crystallinity and smoothness of the films is proposed. It is found that such morphological improvements are further reflected in the optoelectronic properties, including enhanced charge carrier transport/extraction and suppressed nonradiative charge recombination. Thus, efficient and stable ACI perovskite solar cells with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.18%, standing the highest among all reported RP, DJ, and ACI ( <= 5) solar cells, are realized. Meanwhile, the device exhibits superior reproducibility and environmental stability. Abstract:Inorganic cesium lead halide perovskites, as alternative light absorbers for organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites, have attracted more and more attentions due to their superb thermal stability for photovoltaic applications. However, the device performance, as reported to date, is dispirited as it is still a challenge to prepare inorganic perovskite films with both sufficient absorbance and high quality. Here, solvent engineering is conducted, and solvent composition is found largely influence the crystallization progress and film morphology. Combined with anti-solvent-extraction technology, homogenous and pinhole-free CsPbI2Br films have been prepared with optimized solvent of DMF/DMSO mixture with the volume ratio of 3:2. The inverted planar device with a 410 nm-thick CsPbI2Br absorber achieves a power conversion efficiency of 9.14%. Buried Solvent Assisted Perovskite Crystallization for Efficient and Stable Inverted Solar Cells

Abstract:Inverted (pin-type) organic-inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are very attractive for next generation photovoltaics, due to the advantages of low cost and facile fabrication. However, solution processed PSCs usually suffer from unsatisfactory power conversion efficiency (PCE), resulting from the defective perovskite layer and undesired interfacial property of perovskite (PVK)/PTAA. Here, pyridine (Py) is first used as a solvent for Poly[bis(4-phenyl) (2,4,6-trimethylphenyl) amine] (PTAA) for low temperature annealing process. Due to the enhancement of polaron delocalization of the PTAA chains affected by Py, PTAA film with low resistance is obtained. Meanwhile, buried Py induces the formation of high crystallinity perovskite film due to the presence of excess PbI2 coming from corrosion of cationic salts by pyridine and improved hydrophobic property of PTAA. Besides, PTAA (Py) based PVK film also exhibits lower defect densities and residual strain because lewis-based Py can bind to uncoordinated Pb2+ on perovskite surface. Finally, we achieve a champion PCE of 21.31% with PTAA (Py) based devices and the stability of unencapsulated devices is significantly improved.

Abstract:Ortho‐, meta‐, and para‐isomers of fluorophenylethylammonium iodine (F‐PEAI) are tested in constructing perovskite quantum wells (PQWs) for 3D perovskites. Among them, p‐F‐PEAI offers optimal charge distribution and minimal steric hindrance, enhancing PbI2 interaction, as confirmed by TEM and GIWAXS. This results in improved surface passivation and charge transport. Inverted PSCs achieve a boosted PCE to 25.03% with enhanced stability. The photovoltaic performance of inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is often hindered by trap‐induced non‐radiative recombination and photochemical degradation occurring at the upper interfaces and the grain boundaries of perovskite films. Herein, ortho‐, meta‐, and para‐isomers of fluorophenylethylammonium iodine (F‐PEAI) organic spacer molecules are evaluated for the construction of perovskite quantum wells (2D or quasi‐2D, PQWs) to encapsulate 3D perovskites. Among the three variants, p‐F‐PEAI leads to the most symmetric charge distribution and the weakest steric hindrance which resulting in reinforced interactions with PbI2 and perovskite, the enhanced out‐of‐plane orientation is confirmed by Grazing incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (GIWAXS) results. Density functional theory and crystal orbital Hamilton population (COHP) calculations further confirm that p‐F‐PEAI engages most strongly with the perovskite structure. Moreover, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) characterization is used to illustrate that p‐F‐PEAI‐assisted 2D PQWs effectively passivate both the grain boundaries and surfaces of perovskites. This configuration facilitates effective surface passivation, improves charge carrier transport, and significantly suppresses non‐radiative recombination. The resultant inverted PSCs achieve an excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.03% with a fill factor (FF) of 85.11%. The unencapsulated devices exhibit enhanced long‐term stability under ambient environments and continuous light illumination.

Abstract:Inorganic halide perovskites exhibit significant photovoltaic performance due to their structural stability and high open-circuit voltage ( Voc). Herein, a general strategy of solution engineering has been implemented to enable a wide solution-processing window for high Voc (∼1.3 V) and power conversion efficiency (PCE, ∼12.5%). We introduce a nontoxic solvent of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and an assisted heating process in the fabrication of CsPbI2Br (CPI2) to control the improved crystallization. A wide solution-processing window including a wide range of solvent components and solute concentrations has been realized. The CPI2-based inorganic perovskite solar cells (IPSCs) exhibit a high PCE up to 12.52%. More importantly, these devices demonstrate a remarkable Voc of 1.315 V. The performance has possessed such a region with high Voc and PCE in all Cs-based IPSCs, unveiling wide solution-processing windows with enhanced solution processability facilitating potential industrial application especially for tandem solar cells.
