Abstract:A theorem of Dubrovin establishes the relationship between the GUE partition function and the partition function of Gromov-Witten invariants of the complex projective line. Based on this theorem we derive loop equations for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) partition function. We show that the GUE partition function is equal to part of the topological partition function of the non-linear Schrödinger (NLS) Frobenius manifold.

Abstract:We obtain correction terms to the large N asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalue density for the Gaussian unitary and Laguerre unitary ensembles of random N×N matrices, both in the bulk of the spectrum and near the spectral edge. This is achieved by using the well known orthogonal polynomial expression for the kernel to construct a double contour integral representation for the density, to which we apply the saddle point method. The main correction to the bulk density is oscillatory in N and depends on the distribution function of the limiting density, while the corrections to the Airy kernel at the soft edge are again expressed in terms of the Airy function and its first derivative. We demonstrate numerically that these expansions are very accurate. A matching is exhibited between the asymptotic expansion of the bulk density, expanded about the edge, and the asymptotic expansion of the edge density, expanded into the bulk.

Uniform approximation of common Gaussian process kernels using equispaced Fourier grids

Abstract:The high efficiency of a recently proposed method for computing with Gaussian processes relies on expanding a (translationally invariant) covariance kernel into complex exponentials, with frequencies lying on a Cartesian equispaced grid. Here we provide rigorous error bounds for this approximation for two popular kernels -- Matérn and squared exponential -- in terms of the grid spacing and size. The kernel error bounds are uniform over a hypercube centered at the origin. Our tools include a split into aliasing and truncation errors, and bounds on sums of Gaussians or modified Bessel functions over various lattices. For the Matérn case, motivated by numerical study, we conjecture a stronger Frobenius-norm bound on the covariance matrix error for randomly-distributed data points. Lastly, we prove bounds on, and study numerically, the ill-conditioning of the linear systems arising in such regression problems.

Abstract:We consider a product of an arbitrary number of independent rectangular Gaussian random matrices. We derive the mean densities of its eigenvalues and singular values in the thermodynamic limit, eventually verified numerically. These densities are encoded in the form of the so called M-transforms, for which polynomial equations are found. We exploit the methods of planar diagrammatics, enhanced to the non-Hermitian case, and free random variables, respectively; both are described in the appendices. As particular results of these two main equations, we find the singular behavior of the spectral densities near zero. Moreover, we propose a finite-size form of the spectral density of the product close to the border of its eigenvalues' domain. Also, led by the striking similarity between the two main equations, we put forward a conjecture about a simple relationship between the eigenvalues and singular values of any non-Hermitian random matrix whose spectrum exhibits rotational symmetry around zero.

Abstract:For an additive perturbation of the complex Ginibre ensemble under a deterministic matrix $X_0$, under certain assumption on $X_0$, we observe that there are only two kinds of local statistical patterns at the spectral edge: GinUE statistics and critical statistics, which corresponds to regular or quadratic vanishing spectral points. As a continuation of our previous study on critical statistics "Critical edge statistics for deformed GinUEs"(arXiv: 2311.13227), in this paper we establish the local statistics of GinUE type at the regular spectral edge, which is characterized by a repeated erfc integral found in "Phase transition of eigenvalues in deformed Ginibre ensembles"(arXiv: 2204.13171v2).

Abstract:Consider a random matrix of size N as an additive deformation of the complex Ginibre ensemble under a deterministic matrix with a finite rank, independent of N . When some eigenvalues of separate from the unit disk, outlier eigenvalues may appear asymptotically in the same locations, and their fluctuations exhibit surprising phenomena that highly depend on the Jordan canonical form of . These findings are largely due to Benaych-Georges and Rochet (Probab. Theory Relat. Fields, 165:313–363, 2016), Bordenave and Capitaine (Comm. Pure Appl. Math. 69:2131–2194, 2016), and Tao (Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 155:231–263, 2013). Yet when there is an eigenvalue of on the edge of the unit disk, we prove that local eigenvalue statistics at the same spectral edge form a new class of determinantal point processes, for which correlation kernels only depend on geometric multiplicity of eigenvalue and are characterized in terms of the iterated erfc functions. This thus completes a non-Hermitian analogue of the BBP phase transition in Random Matrix Theory.

Strong convergence for tensor GUE random matrices

Abstract:Haagerup and Thorbjørnsen proved that iid GUEs converge strongly to free semicircular elements as the dimension grows to infinity. Motivated by considerations from quantum physics -- in particular, understanding nearest neighbor interactions in quantum spin systems -- we consider iid GUE acting on multipartite state spaces, with a mixing component on some sites and identity on the remaining sites. We show that under proper assumptions on the dimension of the sites, strong asymptotic freeness still holds. Our proof relies on an interpolation technology recently introduced by Bandeira, Boedihardjo and van Handel.

Using results from random matrix theory, we utilize this to generate a randomly chosen eigenvalue of a matrix from the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) in sublinear expected time in the RAM model.

A Complex Geometric Approach to the Discrete Gabor Transform and Localization Operators on the Flat Torus

Abstract:In a recent paper, the discrete Gabor transform was connected to a Gabor transform with a time frequency domain given by the flat torus. We show that the corresponding Bargmann spaces can be expressed as theta line bundles on Abelian varieties. We give applications of this viewpoint to frame results for the discrete Gabor transform. In particular, we get results which hold in higher dimension. We also give an application to asymptotics of restriction operators which arises from the asymptotic behavior of Bergman kernels for high tensor powers.

Abstract:Let E-tau := (C/(Z + Z tau) be a flat torus and G(z; tau) be the Green function on E-tau. Consider the multiple Green function G(n) on (E-tau)(n): G(n) (z(1), ..., z(n); tau) := Sigma(i(0), i.e. E-tau is a rectangular torus, G(n) has exactly 2n + 1 critical points modulo the permutation group S-n and all critical points are non-degenerate. More precisely, there are exactly n (resp. n + 1) critical points a's with the Hessian satisfying (-1)(n) det D(2)G(n) (a; tau) < 0 (resp. > 0). This confirms a conjecture in [4]. Our proof is based on the connection between G(n) and the classical Lame equation from [4, 19], and one key step is to establish a precise formula of the Hessian of critical points of G(n) in terms of the monodromy data of the Lame equation. As an application, we show that the mean field equation Delta u + e(u) = rho delta(0) on E-tau has exactly n solutions for 8 pi n - rho > 0 small, and exactly n + 1 solutions for rho - 8 pi n > 0 small.
Free energy expansions of a conditional GinUE and large deviations of the smallest eigenvalue of the LUE

Abstract:We consider a planar Coulomb gas ensemble of size $N$ with the inverse temperature $\beta=2$ and external potential $Q(z)=|z|^2-2c \log|z-a|$, where $c>0$ and $a \in \mathbb{C}$. Equivalently, this model can be realised as $N$ eigenvalues of the complex Ginibre matrix of size $(c+1) N \times (c+1) N$ conditioned to have deterministic eigenvalue $a$ with multiplicity $cN$. Depending on the values of $c$ and $a$, the droplet reveals a phase transition: it is doubly connected in the post-critical regime and simply connected in the pre-critical regime. In both regimes, we derive precise large-$N$ expansions of the free energy up to the $O(1)$ term, providing a non-radially symmetric example that confirms the Zabrodin-Wiegmann conjecture made for general planar Coulomb gas ensembles. As a consequence, our results provide asymptotic behaviours of moments of the characteristic polynomial of the complex Ginibre matrix, where the powers are of order $O(N)$. Furthermore, by combining with a duality formula, we obtain precise large deviation probabilities of the smallest eigenvalue of the Laguerre unitary ensemble. Our proof is based on a refined Riemann-Hilbert analysis for planar orthogonal polynomials using the partial Schlesinger transform.

Abstract:We study the long time Schrödinger evolution of Lagrangian states $f_h$ on a compact Riemannian manifold $(X,g)$ of negative sectional curvature. We consider two models of semiclassical random Schrödinger operators $P_h^\alpha=-h^2\Delta_g +h^\alpha Q_\omega$, $0<\alpha\leq 1$, where the semiclassical Laplace-Beltrami operator $-h^2\Delta_g$ on $X$ is subject to a small random perturbation $h^\alpha Q_\omega$ given by either a random potential or a random pseudo-differential operator. Here, the potential or the symbol of $Q_\omega$ is bounded, but oscillates and decorrelates at scale $h^{\beta}$, $0< \beta < \frac{1}{2}$. We prove a quantitative result that, under appropriate conditions on $\alpha,\beta$, in probability with respect to $\omega$ the long time propagation $$\mathrm{e}^{\frac{i}{h}t_h P_h^\alpha } f_h, \quad o(|\log h|)=t_h\to\infty, ~~h\to 0,$$ rescaled to the local scale of $h$ around a uniformly at random chosen point $x_0$ on $X$, converges in law to an isotropic stationary monochromatic Gaussian field -- the Berry Gaussian field. We also provide and $\omega$-almost sure version of this convergence along sufficiently fast decaying subsequences $h_j\to 0$.

Singular Values of Products of Ginibre Random Matrices, Multiple Orthogonal Polynomials and Hard Edge Scaling Limits

Abstract:Akemann, Ipsen and Kieburg recently showed that the squared singular values of products of M rectangular random matrices with independent complex Gaussian entries are distributed according to a determinantal point process with a correlation kernel that can be expressed in terms of Meijer G-functions. We show that this point process can be interpreted as a multiple orthogonal polynomial ensemble. We give integral representations for the relevant multiple orthogonal polynomials and a new double contour integral for the correlation kernel, which allows us to find its scaling limits at the origin (hard edge). The limiting kernels generalize the classical Bessel kernels. For M = 2 they coincide with the scaling limits found by Bertola, Gekhtman, and Szmigielski in the Cauchy-Laguerre two-matrix model, which indicates that these kernels represent a new universality class in random matrix theory.
Perturbed lattice crosses and Heisenberg uniqueness pairs

Abstract:This work focuses on two questions raised by H. Hedenmalm and A. Montes-Rodríguez on Heisenberg Uniqueness Pairs for perturbed lattice crosses. The first of them deals with a complete characterization of $\beta>0$ for which, for a fixed $\theta \in \mathbb{R},$ the translated lattice cross $\Lambda_{\beta}^{\theta} = ((\mathbb{Z} + \{\theta\}) \times \{0\}) \cup (\{0\} \times \beta \mathbb{Z})$ satisfies that $(\Gamma,\Lambda_{\beta}^{\theta})$ is a Heisenberg Uniqueness Pair, where $\Gamma$ is the hyperbola in $\mathbb{R}^2$ with axes as asymptotes. We show that $(\Gamma,\Lambda_{\beta}^{\theta})$ is a Heisenberg Uniqueness Pair if and only if $\beta \le 1$, confirming a prediction made by Hedenmalm and Montes-Rodríguez. Furthermore, under modified decay conditions on the measures under consideration, we are able to prove sharp results for when a perturbed lattice cross $\Lambda_{\bf A,B}$ is such that $(\Gamma,\Lambda_{\bf A,B})$ is a Heisenberg Uniqueness Pair. In particular, under such decay conditions, this solves another question posed by Hedenmalm and Montes-Rodríguez. Our techniques run through the analysis of the action of the operator that maps the Fourier transform of an $L^1$ function $\psi$ to the Fourier transform of $t^{-2} \psi(1/t)$. In other words, we analyze the operator taking the restriction to the $x$-axis of a solution $u$ to the Klein-Gordon equation to its restriction to the $y$-axis. This operator turns out to be related to the action of the four-dimensional Fourier transform on radial functions, which enables us to use the framework and techniques of discrete uncertainty principles for the Fourier transform.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the singularly perturbed Gaussian unitary ensembles defined by the measure $$\begin{aligned} \frac{1}{C_n} \mathrm{e}^{- n\text {tr}\, V(M;\lambda ,\mathbf {t}\;)}\mathrm{d}M, \end{aligned}$$ over the space of $$n \times n$$ Hermitian matrices M, where $$V(x;\lambda ,\mathbf {t}\;):= 2x^2 + \sum _{k=1}^{2m}t_k(x-\lambda )^{-k}$$ with $$\mathbf {t}= (t_1, t_2, \ldots , t_{2m})\in {\mathbb {R}}^{2m-1} \times (0,\infty )$$ , in the multiple scaling limit, where $$\lambda \rightarrow 1$$ together with $$\mathbf {t} \rightarrow \mathbf {0}$$ as $$n\rightarrow \infty $$ at appropriate related rates. We obtain the asymptotics of the partition function, which is described explicitly in terms of an integral involving a smooth solution to a new coupled Painlevé system generalizing the Painlevé XXXIV equation. The large n limit of the correlation kernel is also derived, which leads to a new universal class built out of the $$\Psi $$ -function associated with the coupled Painlevé system.

Abstract:In this paper we study, $\textsf{Prob}(n,a,b),$ the probability that all the eigenvalues of finite $n$ unitary ensembles lie in the interval $(a,b)$. This is identical to the probability that the largest eigenvalue is less than $b$ and the smallest eigenvalue is greater than $a$. It is shown that a quantity allied to $\textsf{Prob}(n,a,b)$, namely, $$ H_n(a,b):=\left[\frac{\partial}{\partial a}+\frac{\partial}{\partial b}\right]\ln\textsf{Prob}(n,a,b),$$ in the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) and $$ H_n(a,b):=\left[a\frac{\partial}{\partial a}+b\frac{\partial}{\partial b}\right]\ln \textsf{Prob}(n,a,b),$$ in the Laguerre Unitary Ensemble (LUE) satisfy certain nonlinear partial differential equations for fixed $n$, interpreting $H_n(a,b)$ as a function of $a$ and $b$. These partial differential equations maybe considered as two variable generalizations of a Painlevé IV and a Painlevé V system, respectively. As an application of our result, we give an analytic proof that the extreme eigenvalues of the GUE and the LUE, when suitably centered and scaled, are asymptotically independent.
