Abstract:Improving water resistance and hydrothermal stability is practically important to develop supported palladium catalyst for complete oxidation of methane, a strong greenhouse gas, in the exhaust gases. We prepared Y-doped ZrO2 supports (containing up to 10 wt.% Y2O3) with a novel combined precipitation-impregnation method and corresponding monolithic Pd catalysts for methane oxidation under lean conditions. Y improved the water resistance and hydrothermal stability of Pd/ZrO2 catalyst. The reasons were investigated by N-2 -physisorption, CO-chemisorption, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, FESEM, TEM, TPO and XPS techniques. 10 wt.% Y2O3 improved Pd/ZrO2 surface area from 32 to 41 m(2)/g. 5 wt.% Y2O3 can inhibit ZrO2 transformation from tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase during calcination and Pd supporting processes. 10 wt.% Y2O3 improved Pd dispersion and sintering resistance. After calcining in humid air (containing 10 vol.% water vapor) at 750 degrees C for 10 h, Pd dispersion on Pd/Y-doped ZrO2 and Pd/ZrO2 decreased from 17.8% to 16.2% and from 13.9% to 10.2%, respectively. Y-doped ZrO2 produced extra oxygen vacancies enhancing the amount of absorbed oxygen species and inhibited the hydroxyl accumulation on catalyst surface. Therefore, PdO species were stabilized. Our results indicate that high Pd dispersion and PdO stability on catalyst surface guarantee water resistance and hydrothermal stability of the catalyst.
