Abstract:Wax deposition plays a major role for the production and transportation of waxy crude oil. Previous studies mainly focused on the effects of flow velocity on heat and mass transfer process and indicated that the increasing flow velocity can reduce deposition. However, in the present research, we performed a series of flow loop experiments with single-phase crude oil and water-in-oil emulsion to investigate the variation of wax deposit thickness at different flow velocities under the laminar flow regime and found that deposit thickness did not show a decreasing trend with an increasing flow velocity in few cases. Some competing effects caused by the variation of flow velocity were analyzed and employed to elucidate the trend of deposit thickness. The physical property of the deposit at oil-deposit interface also has an influence on the trend of deposit thickness with respect to flow velocity. Besides, an increasing trend of deposit thickness with respect to water content was observed. It was found that the entrapment of water droplets in the wax deposit enhanced the yield stress of the wax deposit and thereby changing the critical shear stress in wax deposition. These findings have provided significant implication for the effects of the pipe flow on the wax deposition.
